Joie de Vivre

, the Joy of Life, celebrates French modern painting from

its Impressionist beginnings to Postwar. It is difficult to find a nation which has played a more vital role in Modernism than France. In the late 19th century French Impressionists ushered in Modernism with their loose brushwork and experimental approach to light and color. By the beginning of the 20th century, Paris was the stage for the greatest period of experimentation in art history, a magnet to French artists, expatriate artists from around the world and collectors. In this avant-garde environment, the Modern art genre evolved over time to include the major movements of Post Impressionism, Fauvism, Expressionism, Cubism, Dadaism and Surrealism.
