IN THE OF DOING Business
Better
Many of our members have been busier than usual during the stay at home order. While adjusting and performing their regular business functions, many have also been giving back to our communities in any way they can. We are proud to have members who are ‘in the business of doing better.’ If your business would like to be featured for your contributions to our community, please contact info@bakochamber.com.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Kern County closed 59 school-based Club sites when schools closed. They pivoted from providing after school programming to urgent response mode by offering expanded day programming "critical childcare" at three facility-based Club sites (in Bakersfield and Lamont) with extended hours from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday to Friday to serve the critical needs of the community during this crisis. Also, the Club's Nutrition Program increased from one meal per day served five days per week to two meals per day served "to go" seven days per week at five locations (in Arvin, Bakersfield and Lamont) serving about 2,900 meals per day to at-risk and disadvantaged children.

Like so many other businesses, Bakersfield Behavioral Healthcare Hospital (BBHH) has been diligently working on creative ways to reach out and help the community. In April and May, BBHH hosted a Drive-up Goodie Bag Giveaway, where they invited everyone in the community to drive by their location to pick-up a CARES package full of activities and goodies for adults and children of all ages. Look for another event like this in the beginning of June.

Locally, Domino Plastics has helped various retail outlets protect their staff and customers with the Sneeze Guards/Proximity Barriers. Domino Plastics uses polycarbonate or acrylic sheeting that is precision cut and then bent into shape. Thinking of our First Responders and Healthcare workers, Domino Plastics manufactured face shields that have gone to different local hospitals and nursing home. Domino Plastics has partnered with Sikh Riders of America and the River Lakes Community Church, to get face shields out to the first responders including Bakersfield Fire and KCSO. They have also been helping to provide the shields directly to numerous local dentists. As the community re-opens, Domino Plastics can work with other businesses to make it as safe as can be with the benefits of local supply as all of their manufactured products are made in Bakersfield.

Although concerts have been canceled, the Bakersfield Symphony Orchestra has found a way to bring live music to our community by creating the ability to have musicians come to your home or business for a mini-concert and play from a distance. “This has been a difficult time and people are stressed. We want to spread the beauty of music to help our community heal.” shared Holly Arnold, executive director of the Bakersfield Symphony. “Not only does this project bring joy to our community, it is also a mechanism to support our musicians who love and miss playing music - many whose main income depended on live performances and teaching music lessons - so it’s a way to help our musicians heal as well." For more information or to schedule a mini-concert, please go to the “events page” at http://www.bsonow.org/socially-distanced-performances/
