MESSAGE FROM THE CEO

October highlights community initiatives and exciting relaunches

Dear Chamber Members,

As we head into the fall, I encourage each of you to take a moment to stop and smell, I mean, sip your lattes!

Our Chamber celebrated National Support Your Local Chamber Day on Oct. 16, starting with "Coffee with the Chamber," featuring Kat Clowes, Founder of March Consulting, who inspired our members with her talk on "How to Be Your Own Hero." The room was filled with 90% new chamber members! Coffee with the Chamber is our way of celebrating new Chamber memberships, and we look forward to seeing this program grow in 2025!

This month we held a successful Bakersfield Young Professionals (BYP) Mixer, and we want to thank everyone who attended and supported the relaunch. Special thanks to our sponsors, Dignity Health, Mercy & Memorial Hospitals, Open Classrooms and our guest speaker, Jess Druey, Founder of Whiny Baby, for their valuable contributions. We also want to give a shout-out to the Bakersfield Museum of Art for sharing their space with us. Bakersfield Built is one of their current exhibits that we encourage you all to check out!

We are excited to announce the official relaunch of our BYP program in 2025 and look forward to upcoming events, networking opportunities and philanthropic initiatives. If you're interested in joining the Greater Bakersfield Chamber’s Young Professionals Council and Crews, please click HERE.

We also hosted a press conference in support of Proposition 36, an initiative addressing homelessness, drug addiction and rising retail theft in Kern County. It was an honor to stand alongside

leaders like District Attorney Cynthia Zimmer, Assistant Chief Brent Stratton of the Bakersfield Police Department, Supervisor Jeff Flores and Gino Valpredo, Owner of Luigi’s to discuss the positive impact Proposition 36 could have on our community. You can read more about the press conference on page 18.

As we head into November, I want to emphasize the importance of voting. Election Day is on Tuesday, Nov. 5, and your vote will play a crucial role in shaping the future of our community. At the Chamber, we are committed to supporting the growth of all businesses, and we recognize the significance of political action in this process. You can access the Greater Bakersfield Chamber Political Action Committee’s (BAKPAC) sample ballot by clicking HERE.

Beautiful You Medical Aesthetics Wins Architecture & Design Award

It was such an honor to win the Beautiful Bakersfield Award for the Architecture and Design category. It’s a moment that feels especially meaningful after seven office moves and two decades in this incredible field.

Over the past 20 years, I’ve learned that change is a constant in this business. Moving seven times has taught me the importance of adaptability and vision. Each new space presented its own challenges and opportunities, but my commitment to creating a warm, welcoming environment for my clients never wavered. This award is a testament to that dedication.

I wanted the space to feel like an inviting sanctuary where clients could relax instead of feeling like they were in a sterile medical office. Froehlich Development brought my vision to life, allowing me to tweak designs and make my dream come to life. I am very thankful for their support.

When I set out to design the interior of the office, my vision was to create a space that not only looks stunning but also feels inviting and calming. This is where I knew I needed to enlist my friend and interior designer, Jill Templeton, to help

make this vision come to life. Every detail, from the colors and textures to the layout and lighting, was thoughtfully chosen to enhance the overall experience. I’m thankful for her support and creativity in creating my dream office.

As we move forward, I am excited to continue enhancing our space and ensuring it remains a welcoming oasis for all who enter. I look forward to exploring new ideas and innovations in design that can further enrich our clients’ experiences.

Government Day

Leadership Bakersfield Class of 2024 Explores Government and Advocacy

Hands-on Experience in Local Governance

The Leadership Bakersfield class of 2024 participated in a “Growth/Community Issues/ Government Process” Day, hosted by The Law Offices of Klein, Denatale, Goldner and Safe 1 Credit Union, marking their last class of the year. The Honorable Mayor Karen Goh welcomed the students by providing an in-depth, well-received overview of city and county government, followed by Jeremy Adams who electrified the class with an inspirational talk on democracy and the guiding principles our founding fathers incorporated into their vision for an ideal federal government.

The students were also joined by City Manager Christian Clegg, and Kern County Chief Administrative Officer Nancy Anderson. They discussed how city and county government work together to better the community.

These informative morning presentations were followed by a walking tour of Downtown Bakersfield, where the class learned about economic development with David Brust from Rooster’s Honkytonk, Emily Waite from Moneywise and Richard Chapman from Kern EDC.

Over lunch at The Rice Bowl, Clayton Campbell of the Kern County Republican Party and Christian Romo of the Kern County Democratic party gave

insight into the political process. They touched on how various community groups are able to participate and have their interests recognized.

Afterwards, the group got an update on Tejon Ranch Company from Executive Vice President of Real Estate, Derek Abbott. enny Huh. KGET Government and Political Reporter, then joined them to talk about government accountability in the media.

Chris Parlier from the Senate Agriculture Committee, then talked about his experience in local politics, the balance between his personal and professional life, and what a typical day in his life looks like.

The day concluded with “mock hearings” in the Supervisor Chambers as class members were given various scenarios mirroring current community issues. As part of this exercise, class participants were divided into various roles such as County Supervisors and special interest groups both favoring and opposing a specific initiative. Simply stated, many class members embraced the role(s) given to them resulting in very spirited exchanges.

Overall, the class left with a better understanding of advocacy and local government's structure, function and process.

BYP Relaunches with Vision and Purpose for 2025

On Thursday, Oct. 10, the Greater Bakersfield Chamber reignited the future of Bakersfield Young Professionals (BYP), unveiling ambitious plans for its 2025 relaunch after a two-year hiatus. Event partner, The Bakersfield Museum of Art, became a hub of youthful energy and collaboration as the city’s emerging leaders gathered for BYP’s first and only event of the year. Against a backdrop of art and inspiration shaped by the museum's newest exhibitions, the evening embodied the spirit of a new generation ready to fuel Bakersfield’s future and leave its mark on the community.

Jess Druey, the winner of Gordon Ramsay’s Food Stars Season 2 and founder of Whiny Baby, a local wine company, was the guest of honor. She shared her inspiring business journey to a packed house, highlighting the potential of Bakersfield’s business ecosystem. Her close partnership with the Chamber has elevated her brand and deepened her connection within the city, showcasing the power of collaboration between local businesses and the Chamber.

Similarly, Joel Paramo, Director at Hey Salty, Inc., and President of the Public Relations Society of America-Central California Chapter, was named as the 2025 Chair of BYP. Paramo, a rising leader recognized in Bakersfield Life’s 20 Under 40, is expected to bring new opportunities for growth, community impact and strategic leadership to BYP. His appointment reflects the ongoing commitment to supporting and nurturing local business leaders who contribute to the city’s vibrant business landscape.

With the relaunch of Bakersfield Young Professionals comes the reintroduction of Crews— specialized teams crafted to empower the city’s brightest young minds. Each Crew will be tailored to foster professional growth, build connections and drive meaningful change across Bakersfield.

Whether you’re looking to advance your career, give back to the community, or simply build new relationships, the council and crews offer young professionals a platform to lead, collaborate and make a lasting mark on Bakersfield’s future.

BYP is kicking off the 2025 journey on Friday, Nov. 8, with the first BYP Council meeting at 11:30 a.m. If you’re ready to step into a leadership role and help shape the future of Bakersfield alongside driven peers, this is your chance.

To sign up for the first council meeting, please complete the form online at bakochamber.com/ byp.

The Chamber’s sincere gratitude goes to the Presenting Sponsor, Dignity Health, and Silver Sponsor, OpenClassrooms. Special thanks also go to In-Kind Sponsors: Advance Beverage, Chef Lino’s, Crumbl, Good Vibes Photobooth Co., Graze Craze, Norstar Technology Group and Whiny Baby. Their contributions played a crucial role in making the event a resounding success. Thank you for your generosity and support!

National Chamber Day

Celebrating with Coffee & Community

We had a fantastic celebration for National Support Your Local Chamber Day on Wednesday, Oct. 16, starting with our Coffee with the Chamber event. The morning was filled with new energy fueled by caffeine and positive vibes as we welcomed Kat Clowes, Founder of March Consulting and a Chamber member, who captivated us with her inspiring talk, "How to Be Your Own Hero."

Kat took us on a deep dive into the hero’s journey, a timeless concept coined by Joseph Campbell in his book The Hero with a Thousand Faces. Her insights spoke to the challenges and transformations we all face, especially as business leaders, and reminded us of the power of self-discovery and growth. This message resonated deeply with the room, which was filled with 90% new Chamber members, an encouraging sign of growth for our community.

Coffee with the Chamber was a time to hear powerful insights and celebrate the fresh faces joining our network. We thank everyone who joined us to forge new connections over coffee,

marking the day with an incredible spirit of support. We’re excited to see this program grow into 2025 and beyond!

Every year, Support Your Local Chamber of Commerce Day reminds us of the vital role Chambers play in fostering the success of businesses and, by extension, our communities. Whether hosting events like this, advocating for pro-business policies, or creating opportunities for connection, Chambers help businesses grow even in challenging times.

There are approximately 4,000 Chambers of Commerce across the U.S., all working to advance local businesses, spur job creation and promote economic development. Our Chamber is proud to be part of this larger network, and we are grateful for the continued support of our members who make our work possible.

Thank you for celebrating with us, and we look forward to more great things ahead!

"Support Your Local Chamber of Commerce Day reminds us of the vital role Chambers play in fostering the success of businesses and communities."

Greater Bakersfield Chamber Hosts Press Conference in Support of Proposition 36

The Greater Bakersfield Chamber held a press conference at their offices to voice strong support for Proposition 36, a statewide initiative aimed at addressing homelessness, drug addiction and rising retail theft. Key local leaders, including District Attorney Cynthia Zimmer, Assistant Chief of Police, Bakersfield Police Department Brent Stratton and Kern County Supervisor Jeff Flores, delivered remarks emphasizing the importance of this initiative for Kern County’s future. The event was hosted by Janelle Capra, the president and CEO of the Greater Bakersfield Chamber.

“Our community has been severely affected by a rise in theft and addiction-related crimes,” said Capra. “Proposition 36 provides a balanced approach to addressing these issues by imposing stricter penalties on repeat offenders and offering treatment pathways for those struggling with addiction.”

Zimmer highlighted the negative consequences of Proposition 47 and strongly supported Proposition 36. Zimmer noted that the rise in organized retail theft and the fentanyl epidemic has overwhelmed law enforcement and businesses alike.

“Prop 36 will close loopholes that have allowed serial offenders to avoid justice,” said Zimmer.

“By holding criminals accountable and providing opportunities for treatment, we can create safer communities and help those in need of rehabilitation.”

Stratton echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the law enforcement community's support for the proposition’s tougher penalties for organized theft and fentanyl trafficking.

“I’ve seen firsthand the lives destroyed by drug abuse,” said Stratton. “I’ve seen the suffering and mental health issues that prolonged drug abuse can cause. I’ve watched as drug use has destroyed lives, but its devastating effects are nothing compared to what we’ve seen in our state and our city as it relates to fentanyl.”

Flores, representing Kern County’s 3rd District, called for restoring justice and public safety, noting how Proposition 36 addresses critical issues since Proposition 47’s passage.

"Proposition 36 is key to restoring public safety and ensuring that our businesses can operate without fear of repeat theft," said Flores. "It's a vital measure for our community and our economy."

The press conference also featured a statement from Luigi’s Owner, Gino Valpredo, who spoke

about retail theft's impact on his business and his support for Proposition 36.

"Small businesses like Luigi’s have suffered tremendously from theft, vandalism and homelessness," Valpredo said. "Prop 36 will offer common sense solutions that will help fix the problems now and into the future."

Proposition 36 introduces stricter penalties for serial offenders, closes existing legal loopholes and incentivizes rehabilitation by offering treatment pathways for individuals struggling with addiction. It also targets fentanyl traffickers and aims to reduce homelessness by addressing the root causes of drug addiction and theft.

The event concluded with a call to action, urging residents to support Proposition 36 in the upcoming election to protect local businesses, enhance public safety and strengthen the justice system in Kern County.
