The ever changing landscape of vehicles in Kern County Have you ever wondered why Kern County seems to have more trucks and suvs than cars on the road? In fact, the car to truck ratio is 35% to 65% (including SUVs in the truck side). This has been common for several years in Kern County, more specifically Bakersfield, and now the same sales ratio of cars to trucks has swept the nation. 2015 was the first time that car sales were less than 50% of auto sales in US history. Now that the barrier has been broken sales are forecast to be 40% car and 60% truck in the United States this year. Some common reasons for this occurrence: Federal crash standards changed in the last three years and to earn a 5 star side impact rating, you
must have higher side windows and a higher rear window along with thicker B pillars, making it hard to see out of most cars. Aero dynamic drag is reduced with higher rear windows and more raked front windows also making visibility difficult from many sedan or coupe configurations, this has also led to backup camera popularity. Cargo capacity on many sedans has been limited by new safety standards for fuel tanks, putting them in the way of flat floors in the
trunks. Independent rear suspensions are now more common for better ride and handling , they also raise the floor and narrow the storage area making most sedans cramped in the back seat and trunk. Fuel economy improvements have been significant in the last few years with more efficient 4 and 6 cylinder engines and Hybrid powertrains as well, so even a larger/ taller/ heavier vehicles (like an SUV) can get good combined fuel economy while offering great visibility, storage capacity and room for ever increasing family sizes. SUV and trucks come in almost every size now. Historically the SUV was built on a truck frame but now many are built on car (unibody) platforms so even compact cars have given birth to Compact SUVs, mid-size sedans – mid size SUVs, and of course full size options are still available on truck platforms like GMC Yukon and XL When considering a new SUV there are some things to consider- How

Please tell us about the benefits of switching from a wood burning fireplace to a gas insert. Bakersfield has many no burn days due to our poor air quality. That means many homeowners with wood burning fireplaces rarely get to enjoy them. With a gas fireplace, you can ‘turn on’ a fire any time you feel a chill or if you want to enjoy the ambiance of a beautiful fire all winter long.
