Now’s the Time to Think Solar Bakersfield Home Magazine sat down with Jeff Periera, President, and Scott Ryan, Vice President, of SunPower by Sun Solar to find out what solar can do for you. California has always been blessed with an abundance of sunshine. So it’s only natural that Californians, Central Valley residents in particular, would be interested in solar power. The perfect place to start your quest for more information about solar systems in the Central Valley is Sun Power by Sun Solar, a locally owned and operated solar company. SunPower by Sun Solar was recently ranked 12th out of the Top 100 Residential Solar Contractors in the nation by Solar Power World Magazine. This is the most definitive ranking of solar installers across the country and includes companies both large and small; privately owned, as well as publicly traded. We sat down with Jeff Periera, President, and Scott Ryan, Vice President, of Sun Power by Sun Solar to find out more about their company and how it can help Central Valley Homeowners and businesses save on energy bills. We hear a lot about how solar power can help save money on utility bills, but how much are we actually talking about? “Most of our customers will see a substantial reduction in their energy bill; as much as 95%. In other words, if you are now paying $250 to the utility company

each month, you can expect to start seeing electricity bills of $5 to $10.” Much has been reported recently about tax incentives to install solar systems. Are these still available? “Yes, incentives and tax credits are still available, but many operate on a first-come, first-served basis. So if you are considering going solar, you may want to act quickly.” What about financing options? “There are a variety of ways to finance solar installations, in addition to cash purchase. Leasing and power purchase agreement programs (PPA) continue to be very popular with most homeowners. Loan rates start at 2.99% fixed APR and offer flexible terms for 20 years.” Let’s talk about your roots here in the Central Valley. How long has Sun Power by Sun Solar been in business? “Sun Solar is proud to call the Central Valley our home. The company was officially established in 2008, but our history goes back much further. The entire management team was born and raised here; our kids attend the schools we attended, our kids play little league together, you

get the idea! We started out here and we plan to be here for a long time to come. We love our community and invest back into it. About how many solar installations do you do in a year? “Last year we installed roughly 25,000 solar panels, which generated enough electricity to meet the estimated power needs of about 1400 Central Valley Homes.”

Bakersfield is perfect for (solar) with long hot days in the summer and an average of more than 300 sunny days every year. Are all solar systems pretty much the same? “Not at all. SunPower by Sun Solar offers only the best solar panels manufactured by American companies. Some solar companies purchase ‘Tier 1 Import’ products and install them without disclosure to the homeowner. The problem is that these panels can be lower in efficiency and reliability than other products on the market and warranties can be questionable.”

The opener manufacturers do a great job of keeping up with technology; they have quiet DC motors, battery backup units, internet and Wi-Fi technology. As a bonus feature, they also offer a wall button panel which gives the time and temperature. Great job, Lift Master! What are some misconceptions about your products? Some misconception homeowners have is that they think their garage door does not need regular maintenance. We hear people say, “If my garage door moves up and down, it must be fine.” However, your garage

door is the largest moving product in your home, and it needs maintenance like any other moving product. What advice would you give to a Homeowner when it comes to choosing a garage door company? Ask questions, use common sense, and check for a license and address. Use a company which pays its technicians an hourly wage. Some doors sold at King Door are commissioned but not the parts. Some companies pay their employees by the hour and up to a 17% commission on replacement parts; this way of paying employees can lead to parts being replaced that don’t need replacing. Make sure you research your contractor on CSLB.com, look for additional information on their license and confirm they are properly insured. Ask for a comprehensive referral list and call past customers. See a portfolio of projects they have done. Only hire a specialist in the trade that you need. What advice would you give if our readers need some tips for a new look, other than hiring a contractor? There are small improvements that can make a big impact if you

have more time than money available. Painting a room can make the biggest impact. The Pottery Barn has great color pallets to choose from that will give a room a more decorator look. Using Poly Wipe on your worn cabinets can brighten the wood again. Also consider new knobs or pulls especially if there are none presently. Removing unnecessary clutter and reorganizing the space by moving furniture and accessories around definitely can bring a new attitude. In the bath-fresh towels, rugs, and shower curtains will also freshen up the space for sure.

Covers That Make a Back Yard Beautiful! As the weather heats up in Bakersfield, residents are always looking for ways to cool down. The Home Magazine spoke with Jarret Jamieson, owner of Perfect Patio Covers. His services include customizable Patio Covers, Seamless Raingutters, patio drop down shades, and window solar screens. We asked him some questions about Patio Covers. What are the most frequently asked questions that you get about Patio Covers? The most common question we are asked is whether Alumawood patios are better than wood patios. Alumawood is aluminum that looks like wood. The color is a baked on enamel, so you truly have a lifetime product as opposed to regular wood where you would have to apply fresh paint every three years. Wood patios lack durability and are subject to exposure of the elements. They are also prone to wood rot. My personal preference is Alumawood. It is long lasting and requires no maintenance once it’s completed. How long do your projects typically take? From the initial call and request for your free in-home estimate to the com-

pleted project the process can be completed in as little as two weeks. Typically, the entire patio installation can be completed in one day maybe two. Are there any extra costs that can be avoided when starting a patio project? Everything is priced out during our free-in home estimate, so once the price is confirmed at your appointment there are no surprise costs. It is helpful to consider what type of electrical work you would like to have done. For instance, think about what you would like to use this space for – will you need ceiling fans, lights, a TV? We can take care of all of your needs at the time of installation so that you won’t need to have an electrician come out later. Are there permits that need to be considered when building a patio? Yes, all permitting is taken care of through our services, the customer doesn’t need to get involved at all. We

can also help to complete any confusing Home Owner’s Association applications. What are some of the benefits of having a completed patio? Our Patio Covers provide shade and comfort for outdoor spaces. This gives homeowners the ability to enjoy activities such as eating and relaxing in their backyard. Adding a patio cover also increases the value of your home significantly.
