10 Tips for Summer Fun and Safety Halfway into swim season, parents start to hear, “I’m bored!” Keep the fun going and stay cool with these tips for swimming pool activities: 1. Throw a spontaneous pool party. Don’t wait for a special occasion, or feel like you need to make a big meal. Make a few calls or text messages and get the party started. 2. Buy or create new pool toys. See what you or your kids can come up with for making your own pool toys. Here’s one to get you started: Pool noodle javelin throw – make a circle out of a pool noodle and duct tape. Cut a pool noodle(s) in half to create a ‘javelin,’ and let the throwing contest begin. See how many games you can come up with. 3. Make an underwater movie. Buy an inexpensive disposable waterproof camera and dive in. 4. Do a no-sweat workout. Water exercises are a great way to get moving and you’ll barely feel the burn. The natural resistance of the water makes movement more effective and buoyancy can help prevent injury. So, turn on some music and jump in! 5. Take a dip in the pool at night Throw in some glow sticks and dive in, or
blow up a balloon with a glow stick inside to create a floating lantern. Establish firm pool rules and practices to keep kids, pets, and adults safe. A few safety suggestions: 6. Never swim alone. Kids and adults should always swim with someone nearby. Young or inexperienced swimmers need to wear a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket. Appoint a ‘designated watcher’ for family gatherings with small children. 7. No running around the pool, and no diving in the shallow end. The deck can be slippery. Mark the water depth, and let an adult be the one to designate a safe diving area, if the pool has a deep end. 8. Keep all riding toys and electrical appliances away from the pool deck. Bicycles, tricycles, and skateboards can cause accidents, and electricity plus water is a shock hazard. 9. Have appropriate safety equipment. If there are children in the home, or if they
visit regularly, install a fence (at least 4 ft. high) around the pool with a self-closing and self-latching gate. Never leave the gate propped open. Also make sure that the drain has a proper cover; the suction from a drain can cause drowning for both children and adults. Install alarms on doors and windows that have pool access. Consider a surface wave or underwater alarm. Water rescue equipment, such as a ring buoy or Shepherd’s Crook, should be within a few feet of the pool. 10. Take pool toys out of the pool when you finish swimming. Toys in the pool are a temptation to kids that could result in drowning. Also pool chlorine doesn’t clean pool toys. The toys need separate cleaning to prevent illness. Periodic cleaning with a water and bleach mixture keeps everyone healthy.
