Fees for learning How are courses funded? Courses at New Directions are partly funded by the UK Government via the Skills Funding Agency (SFA) and partly by the learner. The European Social Fund also contributes funds to some employment courses. Leisure courses and those that lead to a qualification are generally subsidised by up to 50% by the SFA (co-funded). Learners who are studying to help them gain employment or a qualification and are on certain benefits may be entitled to 100% funding (fully funded, free course). Other criteria also exist, which can entitle learners to full funding (please see flow chart on page 5). The fees in this guide reflect the cost after any government subsidy has been applied and are the fees the learner will pay to enrol on the course. Learners studying for a Level 3 or Level 4 Certificate or Diploma who are aged 24 years or older will be eligible for a Further Education Learning Loan to pay for part or all of their fees. For further information on Further Education Loans please see page 6.
Helping you with fees If you are not eligible for full funding, financial assistance may be available to help cover course costs, material costs and help with the cost of childcare. Financial help is available for customers who meet the eligibility requirements of our funders. Submitting an application does not guarantee that you will receive support and the scale of support may vary.
Payment plan For courses lasting at least 10 weeks and costing over ÂŁ80.00, payment by standing order is available. You will need to pay 50% of the fee when you enrol and the remaining fees will be divided into equal payments over the first four months of the course.
Other payment plans may be available for high value courses. Talk to our customer relations officers for more information on 0345 842 0012.

These are examples of the type of support we can offer but all additional support is based on individual need and assessment of how we can best help.

English for Speakers of Other Languages ESOL qualifications are partly funded by the UK government and partly by the learner. Learners who are unemployed and learning ESOL to help them get a job may be entitled to a free course. To receive this funding learners must be aged 19 years or older and have lived in the UK or European Union (EU) member country for the past 3 years. Learners from non EU countries will only be able to receive the funding if they have an immigration status in their passport which gives them permission to live in the UK, for example Indefinite Leave to Remain or Enter. Passports will need to be seen to confirm this and once confirmed dependents – husband, wife or civil partner and children (19 years old or over) – will also be able to receive this funding. In some cases other criteria may apply and further information will be available at the ESOL interview and assessment days listed in this guide. If you are not able to receive this funding you may still enrol on the course but you will have to pay £695/£710 • Main ESOL Classes last for 2 hours and meet twice a week. • Class sizes are small and focused at a particular level so you will not feel out of your depth. • Before joining a class we will assess your needs so we can allocate you to the most suitable class.

Award in Responsible Alcohol Retailing (ARAR) The BIIAB Level 1 Award in Responsible Alcohol Retailing is the recognised qualification for front-line staff working on licensed premises, who are authorised to sell alcohol. In order to sell alcohol in England & Wales individuals must either be a Personal License Holder or Authorised by a Personal License Holder. For a Personal License Holder to authorise someone to sell alcohol on their behalf, they must train that person to a suitable Level. Training records must demonstrate that they understand the legal implications of the sale of alcohol, have the knowledge to promote the licensing objectives and recognise their individual duty to sell alcohol responsibly. The BIIAB Level 1 Award in Responsible Alcohol Retailing is a nationally recognised qualification which demonstrates that a suitable Level of training has been achieved. The ARAR qualification also affords some protection to the personal license holder, designated premises supervisor (DPS) and premises license holders by strengthening the defence of due diligence in relation to the actions of their employees; where future prosecutions or a premises license review may affect continued operations and / or result in significant financial penalties. The course is delivered by Reading Borough Council’s Senior Trading Standards officer.
