The Inside-Out Competition: BALAMURUGAN ,PAVITHRAN AND SAHEEMA/HOUSE 2.0 Project Goal : We invite participants to send us their interpretations of the ideal house design-one that is a constant space of solace and shelter for the body, as well as the mind. The competition seeks the house that respects the tangible practices of everyday life, and at the same time reflects upon intangible idea of ‘living’ itself. The Site sits gorgeously on the context of Kodaikanal, Tamilnadu providing a great view and sensory of the water body abutting the site. Area = 680.16sqm. taking the ongoing pandemic into account; the design inculcates isolation, sanitation and social distancing which forms the basic mantra of survival. There is a sanitation space placed just before the entrance to ensure safety. The movement across the drawing space, home office and isolation-cum-dual purpose room are zoned and restricted although every spaces are constructed in unity. The interior vegetation and the tree in the courtyard are the other main highlights creating harmony inside the home. It also acts as visual barrier at the entrance and provides oxygen throughout the day. The edible garden beside the kitchen provides leaves & vegetables to some extent, so that frequent travel to the vegetable markets are minimised. Cantilevered spaces are added to have spectacular views to the abutting waterbody. Private sit out space from living is partially shaded by the uniquely designed pergola which can be used for chit-chatting with the guests. The sit-out space which is abutting the edible garden is shaded by the cantilever and can be used as a breathing space after the dining activity. In addition to these, the tree and the interior vegetation combine to form and justify the concept of CROSS forming it’s four characteristics. Office section incorporates green roof graden.

Interior vegatation

The design pursues the concept of cross where certain activities occur at the four sides( sit outs ,interiorvegatation , edible garden ,courtyard)and integrating with nature and surrounding . Supplementing to the safety during pandemic, the door knobs are designed with pattern similar to shark’s skin. It is medically proven that microbes don’t sustain long on the shark skin’s pattern. Also the sanitation space equipped with sensor technology is provided at the entry
