Both about extremely fine and of the highest rarity. (2) £6000-8000 These two plaquettes were produced by squeezing two thin sheets of gold between a positive die and a negative die taken from the field areas of a Dinar of the Nasrid ruler ‘Ali bin Sa’d. The impression will be very accurate because the sheets of gold are pure, thin and soft, which resulted in a precise ‘squeeze’. Neither of these pieces have been pierced for suspension. It is clear that they were not made from the same blanks used for the coinage because these would have been too thick to yield such an accurate impression. They were never intended to be coins but served a purpose along the lines of an identification tag. What their exact purpose was is uncertain but the cataloguer remembers being told that squares of gold were placed as grave goods with the Nasrid rulers, and perhaps others in the Maghrib, at the time of their burial. They may have been talismans intended to identify and speak for the royal remains at the time of the Day of Judgement, referred to in Surah 1, al-Fatiha.

You are encouraged to view the lots before the sale and attend the auction in person. Viewing of the lots may be done at your leisure, by appointment, in the week prior to the auction. The catalogue is printed with estimates alongside each lot. This is intended as a price guide for interested bidders. Although it is our opinion of the value of the lot, bidders should be clear in their own minds what each lot is worth and should be prepared for prices to rise if there is competition for the lot. All lots can realise hammer prices both above and below the printed pre-sale estimate. In normal circumstances, each lot is reserved at 80% of the lower estimate and bids below this are very unlikely to be accepted. Bidding may be carried out by you in person or by a representative of your choice (please ask a member of Baldwin’s staff for more information on this). To collect your bidding number visit the registration table outside the auction room. Please ensure that you arrive in plenty of time for the lots you are interested in. Absentee bids left with Baldwin’s Auctions are executed by the auctioneer against all other bidders. Participants should supply their highest bid for each lot. 9. Save as provided in the preceding paragraph of these conditions buyers must satisfy themselves as to the accuracy of their purchases at the time of delivery. A H Baldwin & Sons Ltd cannot be held responsible for any discrepancy which might be discovered after the lots have been removed from either the auction room or the auctioneers' premises.

(b) Any lot marked with a dagger (†) is subject to import VAT at 5%, this will be added to the hammer price and is payable by the buyer if resident in the EU. If the lot is being exported outside the EU, this import VAT can be waived or refunded on proof of export.

10. A H Baldwin & Sons Ltd act solely as agents and shall not be responsible for any default by either the buyer or seller or for any action or claim which may arise in respect of any lot.

5. Bidding commissions for anyone unable to attend the auction in person will be carried out by A H Baldwin & Sons Ltd without any additional charge. Bids must be in writing and be received at least 24 hours before the sale. "Buy" commissions will not be accepted. A H Baldwin & Sons Ltd shall not be liable for errors or omissions in executing any bidding commissions. We cannot guarantee to execute written bids received less than 24 hours before the commencement of the sale. If two absentee bidders bid identical sums for the same lot, the first bid received shall take precedence. 6. The buyer of any lot shall, if requested, immediately notify his name and address to the auctioneer and if required, (a)

11. Each lot shall be held at the buyer's risk from the fall of the hammer. The lot or lots shall be removed by the buyer within seven working days after the date of the sale. A H Baldwin & Sons Ltd reserve the right to charge storage and to resell by auction or privately, without notice to the buyer, any lots not so removed. 12. Any part of the purchase price left outstanding after the auction pursuant to Condition 5 shall be paid in full within thirty days of the date of the auction. Without prejudice to any other rights, A H Baldwin & Sons Ltd reserve the right to charge interest on any overdue payment at the rate of three per cent per month.
