A 1955 DB2/4 ASTON MARTIN FOR SALE BY AUCTION OR PRIVATE TREATY
1955 Aston Martin DB2/4 ‘2+2’ Saloon in blue PRIVATE TREATY OFFERS INVITED
AUCTION ESTIMATE £40,000-60,000
Lot 171 in The Transport Sale Tuesday 9th April, 10am at Donnington Priory, Newbury RG14 2JE Manufactured at Feltham with chassis number LML 1016 and engine number VB6J 521, ‘RGW 529’ was first registered on 1st July 1955. Acquired by the present owner on 7th October 1966 in part exchange for an unremarkable 1962 Austin A60 and supplemented by a further £300, ‘RGW 529’ has remained in the same ownership ever since. The car is offered as seen and accompanied by various documents including MOT certificates (for most years between 1994 and 2012) and Swansea V5 registration. With the introduction of the ‘2+2’ DB2/4 in October 1953, Aston Martin extended the 2-seater DB2’s appeal to the untapped yet growing market for wealthy sports car enthusiasts with a family. Modifications to the rear of the chassis together with a reduction in fuel tank capacity, from 19 to 17 gallons, provided sufficient additional space within the existing design for two child-sized rear seats. The rear seat backs could also be folded down, thereby creating a loadcarrying platform that more than doubled the previous luggage space, accessed via the 2/4’s opening rear door, an early example of the now commonplace ‘hatchback’. Standard DB2/4 specification from early 1954 included the 3.0-litre 140bhp ‘VB6J’ engine providing an estimated 118mph top speed and 60mph in around 11 seconds. With 100mph achievable in third gear, this was one of the fastest production cars available at the time, further benefitting from impressive handling and a level of comfort generally unseen in any highperformance car of the period.
‘The Aston Martin DB2/4 is an expensive car designed to cater for the connoisseur of sports cars who is not limited by financial considerations.’ - Autocar, 2nd October 1953.
