WANDEGEYA METROPOLITAN PARK Afrikarchi Design Competition
2015 Project size: 3652 sq.m Location: Wandegeya market, South wing, parking lot Designers: Team 15-03-164 (Arthur Baleeta, Christian G. Orem, Chris D. Kimera)
Driven by the need for public spaces in urban centres in Africa, the proposal stems from the concept of a weaver bird, known as ‘endegeya’ and its nested habitat commonly found in the tropics, from which the town also derives its name, Wandegeya. The proposal was aimed at the creation of a communal space and to be a public destination for people of all diversities through community involvement in the design process and restoration of the space. The incorporation of both plant and animal life on ground and in the canopies by playing with shade and light, changes in heights and levels, openness and privacy, watching and being watched within its various spaces, were all aimed at enriching user experience and improving their lives.

the proposed site lies astride the existing parking lot of the New South wing of the Wandegeya Market. Previously a lively social hub in the area that housed the old market with its historic alleys and passerby stalls.
Mulago Hospital
However this changed with the demolition of the old market resulting into the commercialisation of the area. This design proposal seeks to revive the social aspect and greenery of the community through implementation of architecture.

THE GYMNASIUM Academic Work
2014 Location: Uganda Martyrs University, Nkozi. (Main Campus)
The Gymnasium project was about deriving building form and function from an organic object. The public building showcases itself as an example of design inspired by nature. Growing organically out of the ground, the building vividly follows and maintains the idea of open spaces and a free owing plan. By strongly placing emphasis on the use of light in the design and a landscaping designto compliment the building.
