BATTLE ON THE GOLF COURSE

The 78th edition of the Italian Open Golf Championship, the oldest Italian golf competition, opened the season for the Italian Pro Tour on the green of the Adriatic Golf Club in Cervia. The winner was 24-year-old Enri co di Nitto from Rome, a promising young talent that snatched the podium from outgoing champion, Filippo Bergamaschi. As a prologue to the event, a rather unu sual course was laid out in the town centre along Viale Gramsci, where a fun competition was held between the best Pro-Am teams for the final ranking that at tracted much attention from golf fans and tourists alike. But the real protagonists of the golf event were the champions who faced each other over the two courses, red and yellow, of the Adriatic Golf Club. At the end of an exciting competition, overall winner was Enrico Di Nitto with a score of 279 (67 73 70 69, -5), earning a place on the roll of honour that includes many of those players who have earned memorable victories in the history of Italian golf. Di Nitto concluded the tournament, level with outgoing champion Filippo Bergamaschi (72 70 69 68), Andrea Rota (73 67 71 68) and Lorenzo Gagli (68 71 69 71) and then took first place by securing a birdie on the second hole of the play-off. “This win did not come easy and was quite unexpected. I was delighted to win an Italian Championship especially as the Challenge did not start well, my morale was low in the early stages, but I hit the right pace here” the winner commented.
