Team’s Note Hello readers of The Mag! So you found us again eh? Yes. We were ‘hiding’ for a month! Where? Well, recently Bali was filled with huge numbers of bamboo sticks holding little white bags: Bali Bags. These Bali Bags have written ‘Your free Holiday Takeaway’ on them and we feel it is only right to have our little Mag inside them as we are made for you, the tourists of Bali. Coming back to the fact you haven’t seen us around; some of our regular readers (the residents of Bali) of course ignore those little white Bali Bags since they are stating to be ‘Holiday Takeaways’; after all local residents aren’t on holiday.

Last Month: The Bali Bag

As the magazine editor of The Mag, I could say that picking up a Bali Bag doesn’t seem like such a bad idea as there are quite some appealing offers inside: discounts on good massages, tropical day cruises to Nusa Lembongan and nightly fire shows at Kuta beach; all things that appeal to me as a resident too. For our regular feature Bali Road Trip we went south and drove around in The Leg of Bali – better known as The Bukit an area where you’ll find Bali’s dramatic cliffs and secret surfing beaches. Further more, we’ve visited the Denpasar night market and Bemo corner wich are the starting point for all local public transportation. For Ten Things our photographer went all out and presents you with some of the island’s most stunning landmarks. For our food review we went European this month: we spent a whole night at the ever-romantic Papas Café enjoying fine wine and delicious Mediterranean food. For the second review we drove down the ever-busy Oberoi Street where we spoiled ourselves with authentic Greek food at the Mykonos Greek restaurant. At the last moment just before we hit the printer with this magazine we decided to go out and explore the Bali Safari and Marine Park up in Gianyar where we had a wonderful tour seeing exotic animals enjoying their beautiful surroundings. I guess you’ll get the point; we’re definitively having a good time putting together this little Mag for you. Enjoy reading it. Enjoy your visit to Bali. Until next time!

Tumpek Kandang Ceremony

Tumpek Kandang is one of the Hindu ceremonies in Bali when rituals are held at every farm and family compound, offered to the god of all cattle and life stocks. On this day, the animals are blessed and comforted. According to the Balinese calendar, this ceremony will fall on this coming November 8. The name Tumpak Kandang itself is derived from the Balinese word “Kandang” which means the cage or any other areas where the animals are kept.

This initial international event attracts 45 countries as participants with an estimated number of athletes competed at around 10,000.

This event will include 14 sporting events including beach volleyball, marathon, swimming, parasailing, dragon boat racing, handball, surfing, windsurfing, triathlon, beach soccer and Jet Ski racing. Four additional sports are also currently being considered for inclusion in the first Asian Beach Games, they are: wood ball, sepak takraw, power boating and bodybuilding.

Since this is the day to honor domestic animals, the Balinese Hindus will bathe their cows and put on some clothes on this cattle right afterwards; the pigs are also decorated with white clothe wrapped about their bellies. These animals would then be sprinkled with rice and holy water and are given special foods.

Kuta is crowded, and the crowd would soon be getting even packer. The Kuta Karnival event which was initially organized as a response to the Bali Bombing in October 2002 has now become one of the most anticipated and awaited occasions in the whole island of Bali.

This year’s Kuta Karnival carries the theme “A Celebration of Life” and is loaded with schedules ranging from the competitions of, among others, surfing, body building, beach volleyball, beach soccer and sand creations to a number of performances and other fun activities.

Also indistinguishable on the 8th and 9th days of Kuta Karnival, the Food Festival will have more than 60 kiosks of Bali’s best restaurants set along the Kuta Beach, in which a children’s play area will be in operation and live entertainment will be on offer from a central stage during these two days.

Bali Road Trip

’Leg’of Bali the

T

look deserted – with arid lands and withered trees – and not inviting; the impression that you are going nowhere on this road would turn otherwise for it will direct you to some of the dramatic setting of beaches in the island, in the so-called leg of Bali.

Up we drove the road to the parched lime hills covered by brown plantations under the unconstrained glare of the equatorial sun. Two sides of the winding road ascending to the southern part of the island might

We took a turn on the way to Uluwatu in Labuan Sait Street. Dry, tropical wind sweeping the brown bushes in uninhabited lands greeted and accompanied us as we stroll down this street. There weren’t many vehicles passing, but a couple of motorbikes carrying surfboards gave us the signal that we were on the right track leading to somewhere. Finally, there we were at a small T-junction with a small board saying Impossibles Beach in almost fading letters.

.his area would probably be the most appealing spot seen five minutes away in the sky as your plane is approaching Bali. The dazzling white cliffs with the waves rolling in the bottom hitting the walls are so alluring, making you and (probably) other passengers wondering how it feels like to be there. We were once also in the plane and looking at the same cliffs; and now, we finally find and make our way to those cliffs.

16

The Mag

Funny name, we thought, but we went on to the direction leading to the Impossibles Beach. Very shortly after we took this turn, the asphalted road stopped and turned into a dirt track – with some motorbikes parked at the end of it. A small bridge is there, connecting this ‘parking lot’ with the other side of the land which is separated by a gap (around two meters wide). Crossing the bridge we were walking through the rugged, rocky soil entering a small alley. We couldn’t really tell if there’s actually a life going on in this area, although there are sign boards pointing this bungalow to that direction and that café to this direction. Yes, there are buildings too (bungalows, as we assumed), but with no activities and not a single person in sight, this place looked like a dead spot to us. Well, we kept on moving anyhow; although for quite sometimes, we seriously felt like we were lost. After going around taking this turn and that turn, we finally found a sign board pointing to the beach area. Again, we thought the sign was some kind of joke because it pointed us the direction that seemed like another dead end surrounded by walls. It turned out that in between the walls, there is a very small alley (it could hardly fit two persons side by side) that leads to beach. We went through the alley and once we stepped out of it, we could at last see the boundless views of the sky, the ocean, and the Impossibles Beach below.

Penglipuran

Pura Besakih

We went down the steep steps in between bushes to the beach, which is known to be the least crowded surfing area with some of the best waves in Bali. Aside from that, the area in Impossibles is still maintaining its original natural make-up of plantations along the towering cliffs. Unfortunately, at high tide the long-stretched, white sandy beach will disappear under the waves. For this reason, Impossibles is not an ideal place for relaxing on the sand, although it is a great setting for a sea-side walk at low tide. Swimming is not advised here, and the waves are for experienced surfers only, as they break over reef. The tide was not really high that day, so we could rest our tired calves lying on the sand. From Impossibles we can also see the neighboring Dreamland and Padang Padang, which are actually only within paddling reach. From Impossibles we made a stop in Padang Padang Beach. This time, we didn’t really get through a lot of troubles accessing this beach as we did with Impossibles. Entrance to Padang Padang is located by the street side. Slightly-sloped steps going down through a cave crevice led us to the beach area which offers tranquility for there are not many people coming here. The beach is of white sand and not really that long-stretched. Padang Padang is also known to host the world-class waves that attract surfers from all over the world. However, different from Impossibles, the water in Padang Padang is also safe for swimming and snorkeling. The Mag

The Mag • Bali Road Trip Padang Padang has only a little bit more of visitors if compared with Impossibles. Still, although it is not crowded, the visitors of Padang Padang would still love to find their own more private spots by walking through the rocky coastline to the other areas of this small enchanting cove where they could find several natural pools to soak. We got back to the main road. There, we encountered with seriously many cars and tourist buses heading to the direction of Uluwatu Temple. We decided to just join the crowd and go with the flow and, as we had expected, a very long line of these vehicles was there in front of the entrance to the temple area, waiting for their turn to get in. Uluwatu is one of Bali’s most spectacular temples, especially with its position that sits high on a cliff top some 250 feet above the sea level. The temple itself is dedicated for the spirits of the sea and to protect the whole island from the evil coming from the southwest area. Aside from the temple, Uluwatu is also the home of hundreds of monkeys which can be aggressive sometimes. It is, therefore, precautionary signs are put at the entranc gate and several other places to remind the visitors about their aggressiveness. Just like its counterpart in Tanah Lot, Uluwatu is a popular place where visitors can watch the sun setting down. Kecak dance is also often held in the amphitheatre within this temple area.

Bali

Bemo

axis and rented cars and motorbikes are probably the most popular means of transportation found widely spread especially in Bali’s centers of crowd like Kuta and Seminyak. If you are in a rush or at the edge of a short time, these transports are perfect as they will roll down the road as fast as you wish. However, if you are on a hassle-free holiday and have all the time in the world, you might want to consider using Bemo as your transportation mode. Bemo is a mini van transporting people (mostly the locals) from one place to another within the island on a fixed route (just like a bus). Since it is a shared public transportation, Bemo has its own certain stops to pick up and/or drop off passengers. Still, Bemo will stop practically everywhere when a passenger flags it. To explore Bali in a Bemo, you can go to three main terminals where most of the Bemos are pooled: Ubung, Tegal and Batubulan. The Bemos in Ubung, which is also known as the busiest and biggest terminal in Bali, serve the route to the west and north coast of the island. The Bemos in Tegal terminal serve the route to Legian, Kuta, Jimbaran and the Ngurah Rai Airport. The ones in Batubulan serve the route to Ubud, Candidasa and Padang Bai. Aside from that, Bemos are color-coded. Bemos are grouped in colors, with a particular color resembling a particular route. Please note that the Bemos run very slowly, especially when it is not fully loaded. You might also need to check with the driver on the amount of money you need to pay for the one-way fare. Higher rates are usually applied for tourists, but of course, you can always bargain. Thus, a deal of the price must be set first before you jump into it. In addition, although the route is fixed, there is no fix schedule on the departure or arrival of any of these Bemos. The route itself is actually a bit complicated; but again, if you want to have the experience of how the locals commute, then riding a Bemo is a nice way to do it.

stop where the truck will pick you up and transport you to the Lobby the area. Upon arrival at the Lobby Barong, visitors are greeted with replicas of Barongs flying on the ceiling. The lobby has also some collections of fishes, Javan leopards and Sinyulong crocodiles.

The journey to the Indonesia’s Borneo, Sulawesi and Sumatra, as well as the area of India and African Savana, starts from the Toraja Terminal. Riding in the safari truck, visitors are shown around the park’s 40 hectares land with a guide standby to give the information of each of the animals seen on sight.

The quest around these areas offers visitors

some of the rare species on Earth, such as the Sumatran tigers, egrets from Java, Borneo’s orangutans, Sulawesi’s anoa (dwarf buffalo), babi rusa (pig-deer), Sumatra bear, elephants, hippopotamus, the African red-skinned buffalos, zebras, rhinos and lions.

Not very far from the Lobby Barong is also the

area where visitors can have contacts with some of the endangered animals in Indonesia through the ‘Animal Photo’, wherein visitors could have the chance to be up, close, personal and have an intimate pose with the jungle’s hottest supermodels.

To pose with you on one of the ‘photo booths’

is Tsunami and Evi, two orangutans that will give you their warmest welcome hugs in their home in the park. Tsunami and Evi are probably the most natural and dauntless when it comes to posing for the camera. Their boldness makes them the favorites of both parents and children. On the other corner opposite to the orangutans’ home are the white parrots and the colorful macaws. These birds are tamed that you can take one and put it on your arm. Some of them can even pronounce their own name as “Kakak Tua” (Indonesian for parrot) and “Cewek!” (hey, girl!)

Passing the Hanuman Stage, the stage used for

animal shows, you can find the baby lion sitting on a bench, guarding a Safari Land Rover and ready to pose with you for the camera – of course, if you dare enough to sit right next to it. The next model is a baby tiger in the Ranthambore, the actual name of a historic fortress that lies on a national park and tiger reservation in Rajasthan in India. Here, you can also find the endangered adult white tigers weighing up to more than 200kg with the length reaching 3m.

xperiencing the authentic Bali through its majestic temples and breathtaking natural views would probably come at

best during the day time. However, when the

night comes and you still feel like experiencing

a different kind of ‘locality’, visiting the Bali’s night markets would be one of the options. The night markets normally start at around five in the afternoon (before sunset) up until very late at night. These venues are by nature temporary; by this meaning, the vacant land where these markets usually take place will be loaded with rows of temporary kiosks, charts, stalls and other form of displays, leaving not that very spacious room for visitors to even walk in between. It is, therefore, the night markets are also commonly named Pasar Senggol (a market so packed that people brush against each other). The visitors of these markets are known as not only to be the locals, but also expatriate living in the surrounding area and others who savor varieties of Balinese food. Here, visitors can have a taste of the authentic Babi Guling (suckling pig), Lawar (sidekick for the suckling pig), all kinds of satay and many others of the like.

electronics, DVDs, motorbike mirrors, fashion products and many others. These non-food items sold are there in the markets to be bargained. The atmosphere in these markets is made merrier by the loud music or movies played from one of the DVD or electronic stalls. Some of the other stalls, including the food, sometimes have their own television and radio too,

However, varieties of food are not the only ‘attraction’ offered in these venues, for a portion of the markets’ total crowd visits the spot not for the food. Yes, night markets have also been known as the places where one can also

find

other

goods such as

wherein vendors usually gather to watch soccer games when they are not busy serving the customers. If you currently are on a holiday here in Bali, having a walk in these markets without buying anything could as well be a pleasing occasion. On a condition that you don’t mind being accidentally bumped by other people, watching the whole trading activities, the goods that are on display and behavior of customers when making some bargains is just something different and nice to mark another line in your travel diary. Night markets can be found in almost every town across Bali. The biggest and most crowded ones are, however, centered in Denpasar area such as Badung, Kreneng and Sanglah.

Riding the waves T

.he first visitors of Bali, with a big number of surfers coming tens of years ago in the

island in search for some new waves, have spread the word out to the other corners of the world about their new found glory: beautiful beaches with great surf breaks. For surfers, or others who know how to surf, Bali is a paradise providing them not only with the waves but also the whole surfing culture that circles on the language, life and fashion. On the other hand, for those who have never experienced surfing, watching the others riding of just sitting on the sand watching others having fun in the water, why not really take part in this challenging yet enjoyable activity by stepping foot on the board? To help you with the surfing knowledge is Rip Curl School of Surf. As a leading surf school in Bali, students will receive expert and safe tuition from professional surfing instructors. This surf school also provides the students with a selection of fiberglass construction surfboards (shaped for quick progression and maximum safety), special safety helmets, and rash shirt and surf shorts to use. The classes provided cover for the beginner, intermediate and advanced levels with guaranteed results. Beginner students will be given an introduction to surfing, which includes the areas of learning the board, reading ocean conditions, catching waves, the jump-up, accelerating and safe stopping. A head instructor with a number of assistants will be on and off the water to give instructions and encouragements and make sure that students are doing fine practicing all of theories given in the introduction. Made Yoga, head instructor from the Rip Curl School of Surf, stated that it is important for a beginner to use the right board as a start. “The most ideal board to use for beginners is the Malibu. Malibu is a big board, which is perfect to provide the balance needed when in the water. As the surfing skill is shaped then, of course, one can use a smaller board,” Made said. With 5 years of coaching, Made is a holder of several local and international licenses. “The most important thing is the willingness to learn. Different students have different abilities; thus, some can learn to stand on the board quickly while some others need more time. But once you are determined, you can for sure stand up on the board. From there, we can move on to the other tricks,” Made, who has been surfing for more than ten years, told The Mag.

YUKO, JAPAN

Her first visit in 1999 to Bali has ever since made Yuko Umai a regular visitor to the island. The diverse cultures, temples, nature and people of Bali have gotten into this Tokyo girl a lot that she puts Bali high on her travel agenda. After her constant visit to Bali, Yuko has now found a favorite spot where she would spend most of her time when visiting the island: Padang Padang Beach. “I really love Padang Padang that I could spend hours on end just laying on the sand and forgetting everything else. The waves here are also very good,” She told The Mag (TM). Yuko told TM that Bali has made her a water sports fan; although during her first visits to Bali she was very much occupied with exploring the temples and cultural events such as Kecak dance. “I love playing with the waves on my bodyboard now. If I feel tired, I just lay on the beach while reading my book. Once I feel fresh, I’d be hitting the water again,” Yuko said, adding that she would turn to surfboard soon. “Of course I love the temples and the Balinese dances. Kecak dance is very spectacular and highly spirited, while other dances are very elegant. I love the way the lady dancers play with their eyes and fingers,” she said. Yuko also stated that the last time she visited the temples was back in 2005. “I’ve been to Bali six times over the past two years, but I spend most of my time on the beach areas now.” When talking about the night life, Yuko chooses to go to Legian and Kuta areas where she usually has a couple of beers and hang out. “I think Kuta and Legian are the perfect place to go out at night. But this time, I just love to spend the night on my room’s terrace watching the ocean in Padang Padang. I still go to Kuta to have a beer though…but only sometimes,” this Tokyo girl told TM.

MMMMYKONOS I must confess: this was not the first time I spent an evening at Mykonos, the popular Greek restaurant located on the busy Eat Street in Oberoi Street (Jl. Laksmana), Seminyak. Often I have the craving for a nice piece of good quality meat with no fuss, but also won’t burn a hole in my wallet. So the invitation of Mykonos was a very pleasant one, because we already knew the food was going to be great. Like my previous other visits to Mykonos, I just cannot begin my dinner without a good appetizer. The usual Pita bread dish with Tzatziki (yoghurt with cucumber, dill, garlic and olive oil) and Humus (chick beans with tahini, yoghurt, lemon, dill, garlic and olive oil) were immediately ordered, so the dipping could begin. I started arguing with my friends that they were taking too much Tzatziki to put on their bread; at the rate that there wouldn’t be enough left for me! Just kidding…we just ordered another plate. Normally, I would go for Pita bread with Gyros as a main course. But this time I decided to choose something else to review; a Beef Mouzaka. How Greek can you go? My fellow dinner partners also made their decisions: a Pita Gyros (beef) and a Beef Fillet Center-cut (yes, we are all beef lovers). The friendly staff was very helpful and they are literally on ‘stand-by’ to immediately help you at any moment. Even my purse got a spot for itself. The staff brought me a cute mini-chair and placed it beside our table. How creative and so useful! I hate putting my purse on the floor when there is no extra chair available. We didn’t have to wait long before our dinner was served. And it all looked so delicious. After taking some quick pictures, we dug in. Now I must say, the Mouzaka was totally new to me. For those of you who are not familiar with this cuisine, Mouzaka is layered dish almost like lasagna, only with different ingredients: potatoes, eggplant, beef, bolognaise and béchamel. This dish is also available for vegetarians; it has all the same ingredients with the exception of the beef. I looked over to my friends and nodded. They nodded back, with their mouths full; tasty… The only problem I had was that I couldn’t finish my Mouzaka. It’s the same problem that I have with pastas, no matter how delicious the dish is a few bites in and I’m full. Oh well, it’s better than going home with an empty stomach. As for my dining partners, The Beef Fillet and Pita Gyros totally disappeared from their plates. After asking how it was I received a positive response. The beef was of excellent quality and the preparation was perfect. Both of their dishes came with French fries and a fair amount of veggies. Now, you might have noticed: Mykonos is a Greek restaurant, but they serve more than just Greek food. You can even order delicious spaghetti, mouth watering seafood dishes or colorful vegetarian dishes. So there is basically no reason for you not to visit Mykonos. After this wonderful meal, our evening was over. Next time I go to Mykonos I will definitely try a dessert for they looked mouth watering on the menu. Maybe I will go for the baklava… greek-a-licious!

ollow on the smooth bounces of acoustic guitar, saxophone and violin way to the northern part in the long stretch of the beach in Kuta and you will end up in Papa’s Cafe, a romantic restaurant that calmly sees the evening sky. Members of the house’s acoustic band who dress up in chef attires are mesmerizing the customers through the harmony of their instruments from the restaurant’s outdoor stage, which is just a stone-throw away from the sidewalk.

Sitting on the restaurant’s side verandah accompanied by live acoustic performance and the sound of running water from a fish pond, one can find peace of mind. Yet, don’t get too carried away for Papa’s Cafe is not all about the atmosphere, it’s also about food! After pulling ourselves together and became conscious that the reason why we went to the restaurant from the first place was for the food, we asked one of the staffs on standby near to our table to come – we were ready to order. As the starters we had Lobster Bisque, Pomodoro E Basilico and Beef Carpaccio; for the main dishes we picked Vulcano Pizza (a must-try!), Kadek’s Duo, Scallopine al Vino Bianco and Bistecca. The Lobster Bisque is a Mediterranean style of lobster soup served with mozzarella bread. The lobster chops were splendid and the soup was wonderful as a dipping for the bread. Pomodoro E Basilico is of fresh tomato and basil soup which is also served with pesto toast. The soup was very refreshing that not even a single drop was left on the bowl at the end. The thin slices of beef, grana padano, baby rocket, capers and vinegar herb oil dressing from the Beef Carpaccio were satisfying. The big blast finally arrived on our table: Vulcano Pizza. This pizza is Papa’s house signature with a balloon shape and comes with different stuffing choices: Fujiyama (squid, prawn, tuna, anchovy and crabmeat), Kintamani (beef, ham, sausage, pepperoni and beef salami), Papa’s (explodes with the lot). Aside from the shape, another unique thing about this pizza is the way it is served. Upon arrival on the table, the pizza’s balloon crust will be burnt before you finally can enjoy the tasty pizza. Kadek’s Duo (beef tenderloin, prawns, mashed potatoes and season vegetables), Scallopine al Vino Bianco (veal fillet, white wine, black olive and saffron risotto) and Bistecca (imported tenderloin steak served with season vegetables and mashed potatoes) were also fabulous. As the appetizer, we had what is awarded as “The Best Cake In Bali”, Warm Chocolate Cake (peanut brittle and Bailey’s chocolate sauce).

Bali Landmarks

Bali hosts many historical landmarks figured in statues, monuments and temples spread widely in the island. Each of the landmarks tells a story of its own, bearing a history behind its creation. Giving an artistic touch to the great religious and heroic histories, the highly talented Balinese craftsmen have managed to brilliantly portray what they and the other Balinese value the most about their nature, culture, belief and the struggle for independence. Here are ten of the most wellknown landmarks in Bali:

Gatot Kaca Statue

1

Sitting in the middle of an intersection near the Ngurah Rai Airport, the Gatot Kaca statue resembles a guardian which is believed to give spiritual protection for all the flights. As the son of Bhima in Mahabharata epic, Gatot Kaca is described as a courageous and strong flying knight with the responsibility to secure and defense the aerial territory of the Pandava Kingdom.

Catur Muka Statue

2

As said by the name, Catur Muka Statue (four-faced statue) has four faces overlooking the four streets near the Puputan Square in Denpasar: Surapati Street, Udayana Street, Veteran Street, and Gajah Mada Street. The statue itself is a representation of the four-faced God, Brahma, which was built as a landmark of the suicide of the royal family who refused to surrender to the Dutch. The statue is sited at an intersection with the aim to have Brahma guarding and protecting the four streets where each of his face is looking.

Ngurah Rai Statue

3

Ngurah Rai is a Balinese listed as a national hero fighting for the Indonesian independence. To honor his great commendable to the country, the Bali’s international airport and several major streets in Indonesia are named after him. There are two statues of Ngurah Rai in Bali: near the airport and Kuta.

Dewa Ruci Statue

4

Dewa Ruci is a majestic statue standing at the roundabout of Simpang Siur, the traffic circle near the Bali Galleria Mall. According to the Hindu myths Ruci is the strongest of five brothers (known as the Pandava brothers) in the Sanskrit epic of Mahabharata. Ruci, who is identified as Bhima in Mahabharata, is described as possessing the power equal to ten thousand elephants – he is also the most skillful elephant rider. To illustrate Bhima’s great stature and strength, the statue portrays Bhima over sizing and wrestling with a dragon.

Ground Zero Monument

5

To honor the victims of the big blast on 12 October 2002, the Ground Zero Monument – also known as the Bali Blast Monument – is located in the busy street of Legian, the site where the bloody tragedy took place. The monument has each of the victims’ name grafted on its marble wall. As of today, the monument is a popular photo and stopping spot for tourists passing by the area. Annual ceremony takes place in this monument on October 12th.

Renon Monument

6

The Renon Monument is dedicated to the struggle of the Balinese people. The monument with its temple-like structure is one of the major attractions in Denpasar. It houses tens of dioramas portraying stages that Bali has undergone starting from the ancient period up to the fight for Indonesian independence. Up through the spiral stair is a space for visitors to enjoy the view of the surrounding areas.

Arjuna Statue

7

Arjuna is a master archer and prince of all bowmen in the Hindu epic Mahabharata. He is described as a fearless, peerless archer and referred as the undefeatable – he by all himself could cause slaughter of thousands of enemies. Arjuna is said to have been well-built and extremely handsome and learned everything that his guru Dronacharya could teach him; thus, attaining the status of “Maharathi” or outstanding warrior. This statue of Arjuna stands gracefully on the intersection in Ubud heading to Kintamani direction.

Baby Statue

8

This fat, huge baby statue sits in the middle of an intersection of Sakah on the way to Ubud. Many offerings are placed in this statue, sometimes not seen by the passers by due to the trees surrounding it. The local stories say that the baby is sometimes heard crying in the middle of the night.

Kandapat Sari Statue

9

Kandapat Sari Statue stands at the main junction of Semarapura Town in Klunkung, the smallest regency in Bali. Established in 1992 with the height reaching 28 meters, this statue is considered as the landmark of the regency.

Krishnawa Statue

10

Krishna, which is also recognized as an avatar of Vishnu, sits on his mythical companion bird known as Garuda. In this landmark, located in Klungkung, Krishna is seen addressing Arjuna in the Kurukshetra war during the time when Arjuna was having doubts as the enemies he was fighting against were people close to him.

The Villain The tourists visiting Uluwatu Temple are generally warned of a possible harm caused by the monkeys (as the area’s native inhabitants) that might snatch their belongings. Precautionary signs are placed in many spots of the temple to remind the visitors to look after their belongings carefully. However, as the striking natural beauty started hypnotizing, even the most alerted visitors like myself could become unaware that a little hairy hand was trying to make its way inside my bag. Yes, a monkey was trying to unzip my backpack as I was courteously watching Christo taking some pictures of a group of some baby monkeys brawling and playing with each other. For a moment, being in between the trees in the area of Uluwatu Temple, I felt like I was brought back to the medieval times – with the monkeys resembling Robin Hood and his band: they jumped out of the trees in a flash and took valuables such as watches, cameras, glasses or even bags from the ‘noble’ visitors before finally disappearing in the bushes. Oh no…have I just labeled these monkeys as the villains, crooks, or thieves? Was I playing the ‘injustice’ or tyranny character in this script? I hope not, and I don’t really see these monkeys as villains as well. It is because I could picture it in my head: once these monkeys were out of sight and got to their secret base camp in the woods, they would gather their whole community members and announce that the ‘robbery’ was a huge success and they could afterwards trade the valuables with bananas and peanuts. If this was the cause, then these ‘robbers’ are actually heroes for their fellows. Yet, a cry out of a visitor whose sunglasses were taken by one of the monkeys woke me up from my fantasy; I was in Uluwatu in Bali, not in Sherwood Forest in Nottinghamshire. There are some suspicions that these monkeys are actually trained to steal the visitors’ belongings. Well, I’m sure we are all aware that as our ‘closest cousin’, monkeys are not stupid; which means, they could be easily trained or it is within their nature to recognize valuable things – just like the crows and their taste for ‘bling bling’. Then again, I’m neither an expert nor a scientist who has done studies on primates’ behavior whatsoever. It is, therefore, advisable that you don’t wear any jewelry or anything else you consider valuable when visiting Uluwatu Temple. Don’t let the stories about how aggressive and bad the monkeys of Uluwatu are prevent you from going to this place during your holiday in Bali, for Uluwatu Temple offers one of the most spectacular views in the island. In fact, the monkeys are actually one of the attractions in Uluwatu; watching them playing with each other is also amusing. Just arm yourself with a sack of peanuts or fruits sold in the area, and you will be fine…

Some Facts about Bali: Bali is one of the tens of thousands islands in the Indonesian archipelago that lies between the country’s most populated island, Java, and Lombok. It is also one of the country’s most developed provinces with the capital in Denpasar, located on the southern part of the island. Bali is divided into 8 regencies (Badung, Bangli, Buleleng, Gianyar, Jembrana, Karangasem, Klungkung and Tabanan) and 1 city (Denpasar). Unlike most of the Muslim-majority Indonesia, around 94% out of Bali’s 3 million population adhere to Balinese Hinduism, which is a combination of the existing local beliefs and Hindu influences. As the main tourist destination in Indonesia, Bali is renowned for its highly developed arts, including music, dance, sculpture, painting, metalworking and leather. The island is also the home of wildlife such as hundreds of bird species (including the endangered Bali Starling), Indian Muntjac, Mouse-deer, Leopard Cat, Black Giant Squirrel, and several species of macaque and leaf monkey. The island’s countless natural irresistible charms have awarded Bali as one of the world’s most visited holiday destination. With its tropical climate (temperatures averaging 31 degrees Celsius, 88 fahrenheit), Bali is warm all year round – which is perfect to explore its smoking volcanoes, stepped rice fields, remote beaches, towering cliffs, famous surf breaks and the majestic thousand- yearold temples. The hospitable and friendly natives of the Balinese and their way of life are by many considered as a magnet, inspiring those who have been in the island to go back again and those who have not to come.

Surfspots in Bali Bargaining in Bali 1. No matter how much the vendors give as the opening price, you have to bargain for as much as half (or even less) of the price. 2. It is better for you to go to the shop that has everything: t-shirts, shorts, wood handicrafts, etc. By doing a one-stop shopping, which means you will buy quite a lot, it is easier for you to get a bigger discount. 3. Since there are ranges of shops offering pretty much the same things, you can always walk away from one shop to another if a deal cannot be reached. But walk slowly. Normally, if you offer a reasonable price on a bargain, in which the vendor can still make some profits and the price is good for you, the vendor would call you back to his/her shop as you walk away. 4. Try not to be not so apparent that you really want the thing you are looking at on a shop; the vendors are not stupid and can smell your desire, thus will take the advantage by putting the price high. 5. Tell the vendor that if he/she gives you a good price, than you will tell your other friends to shop from him/her. 6. Know the martket prices, or, pretend you do. By saying “I’ve seen this product before much cheaper” will probably lead to a cheaper price. 7. Last but not least: Have fun and stay friendly. Bargaining is part of the culture and it should be a fun activity.

M Nusa Dua To get to this reef you have to drive in to the town itself and then weave your way south, there are a couple of other good waves in this area also, so it pays to do a bit of exploring. N Sri Lanka North of Nusa Dua is Sri Lanka, a bowly right, which breaks into a deep water channel. O Sanur Reef Sanur Reef is a sheltered reef break that only works once in a while. November April (Wet Season) provides optimum time of year for the waves. P Padang Galak Padang Galak is a reliable rivermouth beach break north of Sanur. The surf break is quite popular here, but only works under certain conditions. Q Ketewel

S Padang Bai Padang Bai has the flat-bottomed mixed reef and sandy bottom with some walls.

J Uluwatu
