4 Team’s Note
th
Hey guys, thanks for picking up The Mag no.4! All of us at Baru di Bali wish you a wonderful time on the island during this great high season, with enough spectacular events going down and new venues being opened around the clock it seems. Good things are happening, for sure! As the editors, we’re enjoying our break as well, actually creating this magazine on the other side of the planet, 18.000 kilometres away, in Europe. Missing Bali, we can’t wait to fly back in a couple of days and jump right into a - currently packed - island we so proudly call our home. Actually living on the island of Bali is like being on vacation forever. Sure, it’s hard work and sure, it’s a little less sophisticated then back in Europe, but it’s for a fact that there is no place so diverse, laidback and happening as Bali is right now. Last week our field reporters went out to the Botanical gardens in Bedugul to discover what’s happening at a place called Bali Treetops Adventure Park (see page 44). Arrived back in the urbanised area of Jl. Legian the team dropped in on a happening place called Eikon (see page 30) and just a few days later The Mag was kindly invited to take part in the festivities at the Bali Arts Festival (see page 16) in Denpasar. After all this action, The Mag got invited to chill out and relax by having two great meals on Jl. Oberoi at the hip Italian restaurant Sasa (page 34) and one of the best Japanese restaurants; Fresh Sushi Lounge (page 32). For those of you leaving soon; stay in touch with all things happening in Bali at www.barudibali.tv where we add new videos every single week! For now, as they say in Bali: Sampai jumpa!* * (See you again soon!)

The Mag • Bali Arts Festival 2008
Huge festivities at Bali Arts
Festival2008
As if Bali has not had enough party yet, another big happening was taking place in Denpasar’s Arts Center, giving residents in the area a loud wake up call with an annual event held: the Bali Arts Festival 2008. Starting from June 14 up to July 12, this thirtieth Bali Arts Festival acted as a way of introducing Balinese artistic traditions and culture. Carrying the theme of “Self Restrain towards Balance and Harmony”, this year’s Bali Arts Festival holds its daily events throughout the entire month, ranging from cultural performances, arts & crafts exhibitions and music. This festival is very big that it attracts not only locals, but also tourists from their holiday comfort zones in Kuta and Seminyak. Amongst the performances listed on the schedule were Legong, Gambuh, Kecak, Barong, Baris, Mask dances and the like. However, the Balinese traditions and culture were not alone featured; the festival was also introducing other Indonesia’s rich traditions and cultures from Jakarta, West Java, Central Java, East Java, Jogjakarta and Banten. The Balinese social music and dance created huge attractions in the festival, for the audience could interactively be involved on the performance – a woman dancer would drag a guy from the audience to dance with her. The Bali Arts Festival always taking place when the school holiday is on the way to attract students to involve and actively taking part in the Bali’s biggest festival as performers, competitors or just visitors.

This festival is indeed a positive influence for students and people. “We hold many contests and competitions for children, teenagers and students. Also held are industrial products, handicrafts, photo exhibition, painting and architecture exhibition,” said Ketut, a member of the Bali Arts Festival 2008 committee. Other events organized like international cartoon exhibitions and commercial activities – night market and funfair – were making the festival even a lot merrier that it literally made the whole of Bali came to the city. At night times, thousands of people were swarming the Arts Center area to have a bite from any of the hundreds of local food stalls joining the festivity. The funfair was another big attraction on the event where parents and their children were having laughter and making noises at the many rides provided, like the Ferris wheel and bumper cars. Caricatures were also on standby at the cartoon exhibitions. Many visitors used this opportunity to have themselves drawn on a t-shirt. The skillful hands of the caricatures would then scratch on the t-shirt not only with a picture of the customer, but also with a personalized message. The festival was also turning the traffic around Arts Center into the one similar in Indonesia’s capital Jakarta. Hours-long jamming on the surrounding roads proved that this event was a great spectacle and that Balinese traditions and culture remained as great appeals for tourism.

The Mag • The Celebration of Death
Known as the Island of Gods, Bali holds the true irresistible charms through its remarkable religious rituals and cultural practices. Of all the amazing, colorful and exciting ritual, it might come to our surprise that Ngaben (cremation) is probably the most spectacular ceremony ever held, where the Balinese Hindus celebrate one’s death. Ngaben is a very serious and expensive business in Bali, especially since it requires at least tens of millions of rupiahs (the very cheapest) to organize the whole event. That is why many less wealthy people wait up until years to pass saving the money, when in during that time the body is temporarily buried. Another alternative is by taking the opportunity of joining in at a group cremation – usually held by the Banjar (local village authority) – where there would be several deceased cremated at the same time. Of course, the Ngaben’s size and spectacles depends on the importance of the deceased and the amount of money spent; and just like other ceremonies in Bali, family of the deceased needs to consult with the priest to choose an auspicious day for the big event. With the big amount of money involved, it is for sure that a lot more than a body gets burnt in Ngaben. The body is carried from the deceased’s home or the burial ground (if buried first) to cremation ground in a high, multi-tiered bamboo or wood, paper, string, tinsel, silk and other fabrics, mirrors, flowers and anything else bright and colorful – all are burnt together.

The Mag (TM) went to attend a Ngaben in Kediri Village, Tabanan. TM had a talk with I Gusti Ngurah Raka Suteja, brother of the deceased, who described the Ngaben for his brother as a simple one. “We don’t want it too
20

extravagant, because our family believes that an expensive Ngaben is not the main point. The point is, we do the ritual to help the deceased’s soul free from worldly ties and carry on to the other world,” Suteja said. Suteja carried on explaining the philosophy behind Ngaben that the ritual is to return the five elements making up the microcosm of the human body to their original residence, the universe. “The five elements, Panca Maha Bhuta, are the earth (pertivi), water (apah), fire (teja), air (bayu), and ether (akasa). Since the primordial dimension can only be attained through water and fire, the ashes are dispersed in the waters of the sea or if the distance is too far, in a river,” he elaborated to TM.
We have to ensure tha t the spirit cannot fin d its way back home
He however also stated that the Ngaben ritual is different from one area and another. A long the way to the cremation ground certain precautions must be taken to ensure that the deceased’s spirit does not find its way back home. Loose spirits around the house can be a real nuisance. “In some area, the crowd would shake the tower, run it around in circles, throw water at it to ensure that the spirit confused as to its whereabouts.” TM also had a little chat with Erick, an Australian expatriate living in Bali, who was also attending the cremation. “This is just the best way to do it. The ceremony with all the music and crowd could certainly take away the grief from the family members. It is through Ngaben, apart from being yet another occasion for Balinese noise and traffic jam, we can have a fine opportunity to observe the incredible energy the Balinese put into creating real works of art which are totally ephemeral,” Erick told TM.

The Mag • Walking the Walk
an experience by Randy Wartold horts and a singlet in March. How cool is that? It’s not that cool at all actually. It’s about 32 degrees, humid and a light wind smells of damp earth and moss. Black storm clouds hang ominously over magnificent mountains that five minutes ago seemed so close and clear that they were at the end of the street. It’s not the sort of place to worry too much about getting wet. The number of shops selling everything from penis shaped bottle openers to the most exquisite, delicately carved wooden figures is mind numbing and each one a potential haven from any torrential downpour. No need to panic. So I keep strolling along the main street in Seminyak just soaking it all in (every pun intended).
“Transport? You want transport?” No thanks mate, I’m happy just walking. “Where you go? Where you stay?” Er, no thanks mate, I’m trying to chill out on holiday. “Grass? You want grass?” Is this guy serious?! He gets a raised eyebrow and polite shake of the head as I cross the street to avoid his pester. The stories of tourists being arrested for scoring off some dodgy dude who is in cahoots with the local cops are all over the blogs I’ve been reading before this holiday. And I don’t really fancy spending the next five years or more with my arse against the wall in the showers of the local jail for a bag of oregano. I continue with my adventure. Have you ever wondered where all the paintings, carvings, masks, beads, sarongs, bamboo wind chimes, lanterns, steering wheels, Red Indian figures (!?), rattan baskets, wooden chess sets, genuine fake watches and sunglasses, suitcases, cool t-shirts and board shorts, weather proof outdoor furniture, brand new antique stuff comes from? I mean who makes it all? And scattered between them are bars, restaurants and warungs in all shapes, sizes (and vibes) serving the world’s cuisine and libation. Fancy a Porterhouse

The Mag • Walking the Walk steak and Roquefort with your gado gado madam? Maybe you’d like California Rolls with your Penne and ink squid? An Arak Attack with your freshly ground double espresso sir? Whatever you want, whenever you want it. Different streets different themes. Bars in one. Restaurants in another. Real Estate over here. Handicrafts over there. Got a good business idea? Looks like it won’t stay that way for long. If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery then whoever started out with the first bar on Dhyana Pura, the first restaurant on Oberoi and the first raunchy lingerie shop in Seminyak need a pat on the back! They started a wave of business that just keeps rolling on. The danger seems to be that so many people jump on the band wagon of a good idea and want some of the lucrative pie that’s going around, that the original idea gets lost in second rate copies and it gets a little difficult to sort the wheat from the crap. Competition is good, I agree with that. But since when is a blatant copy fair competition? Let’s hope some bright spark doesn’t open the first new age, mental health day, full vegan, zero carbon foot print restaurant somewhere in Ubud. Imagine the rip offs. Certified organic tofu beaten with twigs naturally harvested in the virgin rain forest with a side of crispy bacon and buffalo chicken wings please. Hang on a minute … maybe it’s already there! Having said that, there is no doubt that bargains galore are there to be had. And the saturation of shops, boutiques, places to eat and bars to drink means that there is something somewhere for everyone. From all day happy hours in the back streets of Poppies to over the top New York priced cocktails on the beach in Seminyak. Same sunset by the way, different worlds. And I guess that’s the great thing about exploring in this tourist hub of the island, the choice. Start with an empty head and no idea of what you want and guaranteed something will distract you, grab your attention and tickle your fancy. It might be a good idea to remember a fat wallet in case you end up in some uber trendy fusion food saloon sipping margaritas and nibbling on a cashew nut before you realize you could have had twice as much fun for a quarter of the price. Enjoy!

The new
Eikon
Being the latest addition to the busy shopping and night life area of Legian in Kuta, Eikon is bringing a sophisticated colonial ambiance to the neighborhood. Designed in natural red brick and heap-styled of timber, this Restaurant, Lounge & Bar aims to be the Legian’s destination venue serving the customers not only with a great collection of beverages and meals ranging from Tapas style to the fine international a la carte menu, but also the ‘real’ entertainment all the Bali’s party people have been longing for.
The two-storey arrangement of the Eikon consists of an extended modern, elegant bar area with plasma screens attached on the wall displaying customers with all the recorded events. Live footage of what’s happening inside the Eikon will soon be displayed for customers in all stories to view. A comfortable sofa area is also to be found in the first storey, giving the customers a more relaxed and private ambiance while enjoying their drinks. Moving on to the back of the storey is the fabulous cozy sitting lounge supported by comfortable sofa and also a big screen. The open-air setting of the lounge makes it perfect for you to have your fun times under the beautiful Bali sky. Eikon’s second storey is elegantly designed to make the customers’ fine dining occasions even more pleasant. The white theme on this part of the venue makes Eikon successful in presenting elegance in simple manner. The terrace gives the customers spectacular views of the busy street of Legian downstairs.

‘Mastermind’ behind this new hot spot, Eric, explained that Eikon is the venue for people to have fun at the fullest but can still behave themselves elegantly. “Everyone can go drunk as they please, laugh as loud as they want to…but Eikon is not the place where drunken people do stupid things and aggressive behaviors. We expect these people to act like noble ladies and gentleman,” he told The Mag (TM), adding that the customers’ exclusive behaviors are the key of maintaining Eikon as a sophisticated hangout spot.
The terrace gives the customers spectacular views of the busy street of Legian “Eikon is designed as a spot where people can have nice meals and later continue with having drinks at the lounge and sitting area while enjoying our in-house entertainment and events. Although, practically, all the customers are free to have dinner and/or drinks everywhere they please in this place. In other words, you can have your dinner at the bar, sitting area, lounge and, of course, the dining area upstairs,” Eric further explained. Eikon is currently busy preparing its lines of big events where all party-goers in the island will be provided with the ‘real’ parties. “Yeah, just wait for all the parties. We have something special for the ladies too… Ladies are the common objects of many forms of harassment. This time Eikon will make them the master, where they are the authorities of all actions,” Eric told TM. So for all of you claiming as party people, get dressed to finest and prepare yourselves for the massive party attacks Eikon is going to kick off.

The Mag • Everybody Smiles @ Fresh
smiles @Fresh
Everybody
Conveniently situated on the Seminyak’s celebrated ‘Eat Street’ (Jl. Laksmana), Fresh offers Japanese fusions that fit out well on tongues of many different cultural backgrounds. The space of the restaurant is open, stylish and very relaxing with the inside setting consisting of a central bar area surrounded by lower chairs with cushions and tables for a more private mood. The outside setting is bordered with green reeds, adding a fresh touch and outdoorsy feel to this part of the restaurant. The first thing you will notice as you enter Fresh is smile from the friendly faces of the staffs, who will then escort you to your desired table. We were fortunate enough to have Mr. Wayan (Ipong), a Balinese who owns Fresh, to join us at our table. Mr. Wayan leisurely explained to The Mag (TM) about the range of menus offered at his restaurant, stressing that high quality of food and excellent service are two things that anyone could always expect to get from Fresh. “We have the raw materials for the food, such as fish, delivered to us on a daily basis. So, any food served to our customers is guaranteed 100% fresh! Just like the name of this restaurant,” he told TM. Mr. Wayan added that the key ingredients for the food, such as rice, are imported straight from Japan. “It is very important for us (Fresh) to create the right food textures as the ones served in Japan. For example, the rice for sushi has to be very sticky; otherwise the sushi will taste not as good. We couldn’t find that kind of rice here, and so we import it straight from Japan.” On the sideline of our conversation, the staffs served us with appetizers: Baby Burger, Beef Tataki and Tuna Tartar. The little, yummy bitty Baby Burger (minced beef and tuna and mixed patties served with steamed vegetables) is just
32
T he Mag
perfect, especially for party snack. The Beef Tataki (lightly seared juicy Aussie tenderloin, served in carpaccio style…delisch!) is a beautifully arrayed dish; the beef slices are soft and tasty. It’s the finger-lickingtaste kind of food; you can lick your chopsticks instead. The Tuna Tartar (marinated tuna, cheese and fish roe, topped with vegetable salsa) is simple and small, yet it was a huge hit when we tasted it. The main course arrived on our table just when we thought we were quite stuffed with plenty of appetizers. Yet, the look of Foie Gras, Fresh’s signature, served to us was so tempting that only in a heart beat our mouths turned watery. This one of a kind dish is of lightly panfried duck liver with mango strip and topped with hazelnuts. The taste goes in line with the look: rich, buttery and delicate, unlike that of a regular duck or goose liver. Mr. Labalaba (Mr. Spider) was served next on our table. This delightful, attractive centipede-shaped (a rather not in harmony with the name) is an amazing composition of soft shell crab tempura and avocado topped with eel. “Let’s have a smoking break! That’s how people do it in Japan, they have smoking breaks in between their meals”, Mr. Wayan told us. As we had expected, another dish was served on our table right after we put off our cigarettes. Came up next was T&T, which is of king prawn tempura and avocado with spicy sauce. It for sure was a blast! Tutti Fruity was served to us afterwards to tame the blast from the previous T&T. This vegetarian dish is of apple, mango and avocado; it looks and tastes very refreshing, especially with its tempting green look. And the best thing is, all the food comes in seriously affordable prices – the menu starts at IDR 35k, and the most expensive one doesn’t go far beyond the number. Okay, our mouths are full. It’s time for you to check out this restaurant yourself. High quality food, excellent service, great ambiance, strategic location…what else do you need, you name it. Fresh has it all! Oh, you will walk out of the restaurant freshly smiling, and feeling some kilos fatter!

our table. The look of the seafood salad with olive oil and lemon dressing was so tempting, that we couldn’t wait even one second longer to taste it. As we guessed it before, the taste of Insalate Di Mare went perfect to be served on a warm evening: light and lemony. Perfect as an appetizer.
To check out the entire buzz, The Mag (TM) went to have dinner in Sasa’. When we got there, the owner who shares his name with his restaurant, was in talks and sharing good laughter with his customers. He came to our table and greeted us not long afterwards – he does this to all of his customers. We ordered our appetizer, mains and desserts while Sasa’ was telling us story that in Italy food means a lot more than just something that you eat.
Spaghetti Vongole, Gnocchi Sorrentina and Penne Polpettine came as our main dishes. The spaghetti with clams, white wine, cherry tomatoes, garlic and parsley is such a splendid and super fresh Italian classic in Sasa’. Gnocchi Sorrentina is of potato gnocchi with fresh tomato sauce, mozzarella, parmesan and fresh basil; Chef Emanuele knows exactly how to make this classic southern Italian potato dumpling go excellent both in your mouth and belly. Pene Polpettine is pasta with meatballs and tomato sauce, which looks traditional yet very rich in flavors.
“Of course we serve only the freshest food. But again, it’s not all about food. The food acts somewhat like a social tool, but the hospitality and great atmosphere make everything during your meal time perfect. Also, the food made here is not just something that you eat, it’s something that you enjoy while in a warm conversation with your friends and beloved ones,” said Sasa’. HEIKO, GERMANY Being the man behind the success of Bali Safari and Blue Ocean restaurant in Double Six area, Heiko had actually never planned to ever live in Bali. He first traveled to Bali on a business trip back in 1987 to meet with artists from Ubud in relation to fashion, the industry he was working in at the time. He was ever since a frequent traveler not only to Bali but other places as well like Yogya, where he studied Batik (wax-resist dyeing technique used on a textile). Heiko admitted that he is extremely fascinated with the charms of Bali’s northeastern beaches. “The beaches there are very beautiful, unspoiled by the rapidly changing Bali,” he said with a full admiration. He told The Mag (TM) that during his first months living in Bali he loved to ride on his bike and go wondering around the areas that he thought Great passion on nature and outdoor activities led Heiko to start with were still untouched by what now is known as Bali Safari, in which he personally on occasions is establishment. “In these the tour guide. Heiko admitted that running Bali Safari is a pleasurable areas you could still see doing for him as he can canalize his hobby at the fullest. “What else people (the villagers) can be more interesting than doing your hobby and earn some money bathing in the river. But at the same time,” he said to TM with eager look on his eyes. that’s the point. It is the purity of the nature, clean “It is always nice to keep Bali original and untouched. On the other and fresh air…well, it’s hand, I also believe that Bali needs to develop for the sake of its so traditional Balinese people. I’m sure that we are all aware that Bali has more and more atmosphere and that’s just buildings nowadays. It’s totally okay, as long as the developments and amazing for me.” constructions are eco-friendly. We still need to pay good attention to the environment. I mean…c’mon, we all love Bali, right?” “Oh and one more thing, I hate plastic bags. I really wish that one day plastic bags would totally don’t exist in Bali,” he determinedly told TM.

Get your boost of adrenaline at the Bali Treetop in the north of Bedugul
When the heat and humidity of Bali’s beaches area –where the island’s major attraction are centered– finally get to you, then it’s time for you chill out and feel the refreshing breeze up to the north in Bedugul, a mountainous area that for long have been used as the weekend retreats. And of course, the best way to feel the breeze touching your skin is to be in between the trees, up above the ground! Located within the area of Bedugul’s Eka Karya Botanical Garden, Bali Treetop brings you all the thrill and excitement of viewing the nature in a bird’s-eye view. This adventure park comprising two hectares of land is providing you with six levels of circuits with different challenges to choose from: 44

Introductory circuit to get a taste of the activity. Maximum 5 meters high. Dancing with Trees (marked with blue) First thrills and many flying-fox. Max. 8 m. high. Emotion (marked with red) With 160m long Flying-Fox and a Tarzan Jump. Max. 11 m. high. Adrenalin (marked with black) The big thrill with breathtaking jumps. Max. 20m. The 65 challenges provided – suspended bridges, spider nets, Tarzan jumps, flying-fox, flying swings, and many more – are all carefully designed to ensure your fun times in the highest level of security. Throughout the entirety of the Circuits you will remain attached to a life-line support. Patrol Guides will also be situated along the circuit ready to advise and assist as needed - giving support from above and below. Before starting the activity on the circuits, every client must follow the safety instructions conducted by the Patrol Guides who will explain how the circuit works, how to use the equipment and provide all safety instructions which you need to respect at all times. All circuit platforms at the eco-friendly Bali Treetop are held in place using an innovative compression system to protect trees from any damage. Protective half logs are used to prevent cables from cutting into trees and minimize tree trunk degradation.
noted that this form of ecotourism activity has gained a lot of success, in addition to trekking, cycling and rafting. The uniqueness of Bali Treetop Adventure Park lies on its way in exploring nature in rough jungle manners. Being on the treetop doesn’t only give you the breathtaking bird’seye view, but also the thrill and excitement of being not just a bird, but an eagle diving sharp to its prey on the ground once you are sliding down the twenty meter high flying-fox towards the earth. An excellent reward for those courageous enough. The two and a half hours of maximum time given would seem very short to explore and be with the nature in this Tarzan-styled activity. Bali Treetop Adventure Park is open from 9 AM to 6 PM with the highest peak of clients on weekends.
Putu Kendal, Chief Instructor of the Patrol Guide, explained to The Mag (TM) that Bali Treetop pays a big concern towards the environment. “That is why we advise our clients to help us protect the environment, like throwing the litter right in its place when in our park area.” He continued explaining that each of the circuit is designed as a great way to build confidence and teamwork skills within groups, and is fun and popular activity for school classes and businesses. “Each run also features ‘Flying Fox’ zip-lines of up to 160 meters, providing heart-pounding thrills to guests as they fly through the air,” Kendal told TM. Bali Through a Lens Bali, colorful ceremony Hati-Hati Ada upacara agama! Probably one of the first things I learnt in Indonesian language. One of the things that still today, five years later, continue to make my car slow down, if not come to a complete stop and my eyes to go wide open, in anticipation of an always beautiful event, in admiration of the carefully crafted decoration and the colorful array of offerings and smiles. While you will run into many different ceremonies everywhere, everyday, there are those really special events and locations, those magical days governed by the moon that will make Bali explode in endless processions of people, umbrellas, umbul-umbul, in a continues exchange of prays and blessings, of gratitude and happiness. Like many years before, like many years from now, the Balinese descend the stairs of the Besakih Temple on the 07.04.2007, 10th moon of the Balinese Calendar, “Betara Turun Kabeh”. For the globe trotter I think I’m, on the move for fifteen years, far away from my own roots, this unique and alive Balinese culture, the sense of community, of tradition, of attachment not only to the people but to the place is really inspiring. I feel honor and blessed to be a, hopefully respectful, witness. Jorge Monje

Things I don’t like One thing I don’t like is how I have to worry about my characters’ cell phones when I write a story. This might seem trivial on the surface, but the management of information, who knows what and when, is vital to a story’s plot. Everybody has a cell phone these days, and with a story set in present day, the writer has to deal with this issue. So, let’s say a character is locked in an ice sculpture exhibit (the fate of one of my characters) where the temperature is minus 20 degrees Centigrade. The dramatic point being tension and suspense. But what does the character do? Why, he whips out his cell phone and calls somebody to unlock the damn place. So, you have to plot around the cell phone: either it has either be out of a service area, or has a dead battery, or is somehow lost. I don’t like liver. Or eggplant. Liver and eggplant would be a dish from hell. Especially if served hot. I don’t like nausea. Nausea is, quite frankly, nauseating to me. I don’t mind a fever nearly as much. I don’t like small noises at night. I don’t like big noises at noon. I don’t like dirty feet on clean bed sheets. I don’t like people telling me what I should like.
...
I don’t like the color of the Rupiah 100,000 note, which is the same shade of red as the Rupiah 10,000 note. I have lost a small fortune this way.

When planning a trip to Bali (or elsewhere) it is very common for you to have listed down what kind of activities to do, places to go, and so on and so forth. Yet, there will be things out of your list that you might experience on the way, whether or not you plan it or like it. Listed below are the things that might come to your surprise during your stay in Bali; but don’t worry, these things would cause nothing but a more memorable holiday experience for you to bring back home.
things that are ONLY
to be found in Bali They are people, not Martians!
1
While many motorcyclists are coping hard with the weight and heat caused from wearing their helmets, it is always amusing to actually see some others who are still on their ease in the middle of a burning day with their helmets on…and that they are not on their motorbikes! In a tropical island like Bali people would tend to go out on their minimum outfits; yet, these ‘helmeted’ people can step comfortably into the Circle K shops and really have their times picking up stuffs and queuing in lines at the cashier. In night times, you can also expect to see these people on the beach area. So if you happen in one night to be on the beach in Kuta and spot a silhouette of someone/people in the dark on a quite distant, with the size of the head is at least twice as big from the normal one, then don’t run because they are not creatures from Mars that are on holidays here in Bali. They are the locals who seem to be very much attached with their helmets that they would still wear their helmets though the motorbikes are resting somewhere in the parking area.
2 It’s gettin’ hot in here... No, these guys are not belly dancers nor exhibitionists. If you have a bite for lunch somewhere in a local restaurant, please don’t get so shocked in case all of the sudden a bunch of men (yes, only men) sitting on the next table pulling up their t-shirts up to below their chest level; thus, showing their bellies around. The reason behind this action is both the heat caused by the food they have just consumed and weather. However, instead of taking the whole t-shirts off, these guys would prefer to just lift them up a little. It’s pretty bizarre to actually see only one man doing this; and a table full of four or more men doing this? You go figure…

Taxi mister…taxi?
Lines of taxis on one side of the road and the drivers on the other are a regular sight especially in Kuta and thereabouts. If this is your first time to Bali and you are walking on the sidewalks in Kuta, expect to have these drivers offering their service using their famous lines: “Taxi mister…taxi?” or sometimes with just a single word “Transport?” But of course, the taxi drivers are not the only ones coming to you offering transportation service; you can also expect to have the drivers of Ojek (motorbike taxi) offering you their service. In other words, if you are walking on the sidewalk in Kuta you will hear the same expression from these ‘transport guys’ within (around) every 10 to 20 meters.

Enjoying the sun or playing with the waves on the beach is just the sort of activity that you must do when holidaying in Bali. However, there will come several vendors ‘interrupting’ the fun times that you are having. It is good, of course, if you feel like buying something from these vendors. Then again, if you don’t feel like buying, it is advised for you to say no in a friendly way. Otherwise, if you ignore them or you keep them away rudely, they will keep on pestering you and may become even more aggressive. Some of vendors do not hesitate to even sit with you on your chair offering you the special ‘sunset price’, ‘morning price’, ‘honeymoon price’ and any other prices they can think of. If you ever buy something from any of these vendors, he/she will likely to always remember you. Thus, whenever this vendor sees you, he/she will greet you as if you are a best friend – which is very sweet actually. Anyway, it’s not going to hurt you at all to spend a dollar or two on these vendors.

If by any chance you are somewhere in Bali and you see this sticker saying “I ♥ Bali Dogs” stuck on a car’s back window and/or a motorbike, please keep away the thought that owner of the vehicle is somewhat into beastiality. The sticker is just an expression to show how special and identical Bali dogs are. Bali dogs are the kind of dog that will bark at the moon and then bark at other dogs barking at the moon. In short, Bali dogs bark at almost everything: pedestrians, motorbikes, cats, other dogs, nothings. The dogs in most parts of Kuta and Seminyak areas are considerably ‘quieter’ if compared to those in Denpasar – or any other areas where housing complexes are generally found. In other parts of Bali, like in Kintamani or some villages in Ubud, these dogs are often found relaxing right on the middle of the road. Hence, if you are driving a car or riding a motorbike in these areas, please be careful and don’t get carried away by the smooth drive – there aren’t usually a lot of vehicles passing by especially the road to Kintamani – because these dogs may be coming in your way.

It smells different in Bali
Once you get out of the plane and step foot on Bali’s Ngurah Rai Airport, you’ll get struck by a distinct incessant smells of frangipani and other substances used by the Balinese Hindus for the offerings. In a land where cultural and religious values are so thick like in Bali, it is a common practice (or even a must) for every building to have its own Pura (temple), even a very small one attached on the wall, wherein the building’s occupants can carry out their daily praying and other rituals – one of which is to place the offering. Thus, the smell of the offering is practically everywhere to be scented in Bali.

Motorbikes are here, there and everywhere
7
Motorbikes are very widespread here in Bali. Both the locals and tourists use them as the main means of transportation, especially for the easy access in Kuta, Legian and Seminyak where the roads are narrow. At the first glance, the motorbikes traffic would appear like a total chaos. But once you get used to it everything would seem normal and flow smoothly. Also, for motorbikes stop signs don’t mean a whole lot and one way is considered to be just for large vehicles. In other words, on a motorbike you can always make your way everywhere you wish to go. If you decide to travel around Bali on a motorbike, it is advisable for you to ride slowly and very defensively; especially considering that there is no denying the dangers of riding a motorbike and Bali is no place for beginners to learn motorbike riding.

9 Sunset touching still water The sunset in Bali is legendary, giving the sense that life seems to be slowing down to the simple enjoyment of being with nature, and being present to its very warm touch. Yes, relaxing on a Bali beach while enjoying the sun setting down, touching the still water is surely a magical way to escape from the ordinary lives.
Again, due to the thickness of cultural and religious values in Bali, you can always expect to see many both traditional and/or religious practices wherever you go in the island. The interesting part is that you can have a full access to watch these practices – the most held and common practice is ceremonies – because many of them are happening right on the sides of the roads. Even if the ceremony is held in a temple you can still see it as long as you are equipped with the standard clothing required to pray – which obliged you to at least have a Selendang (a piece of fabric to be used as a belt), Udeng (white turban) and pants on. It is therefore occasional traffic jams are usually occurred due to the ceremony held. There will be also occurrence when a road needs to be closed down because the ceremony held is involving so many participants.
G’day mate!
10
Okay, so you are on a holiday now Bali; spending tens of hours of flight from your home countries in Europe, Canada, USA, etc. Well actually it really doesn’t matter where you are from, as long as you are white – as in Caucasian white – people, especially the street vendors will tend to greet you using the Australian expression “G’day Mate!” These vendors tend to somehow see you as an Australian; until they really learn that you are not one – usually through your English accent that will lead them to ask you where you are actually from. It is from there that you can tell them where you are from and teach them a little bit of your language – like how to say hi. The next time you guys meet each other again, they will greet you in your language.

STAY
HEALTHY :) Great, you have finally arrived in Bali! Got all your plans sorted out? You probably know that there are many things you could do here on your holiday. If you are here for the culture, look no further. If you are looking for a quiet getaway, its probably not far from where you are now. So, go and enjoy your selves, but remember to stay heathy. Here is some information to keep in mind and a few tips on how to keep your health during your holiday:
informational
Dengue Fever
Dengue fever is a kind of virus that is transmitted by the bite of an infected mosquito (the black tiger mosquito). During the raining season you have to be extra carefull because that is the time these mosquitoes breed. The symptoms of dengue are high fever, severe headache, backache, joint pains, nausea and vomiting, eye pain, and rash. (go to hospital if you have these symptoms). HOW TO AVOID: 1. AVOID any mosquitoes. 2. Put insect (mosquito) repellent lotion on your skin 3. Put mosquito coil in your or spray your room before you leave so when you’re back, it’s mosquito free! 4. Wear long sleeves and long pants, especially between 10AM 2PM and 4PM - 6PM (=that is when these guys are extra active)
a black tiger mosquito, recognizable by its black & white legs and body
Sounds all a bit scary but don’t worry too much. Dengue infections are rare, especially in tourist areas and your hotel probably smokes out their garden every few days to kill these mosquitos.
Bali Belly or Diarrhea
Running to the toilet every time can be a bit embarrassing and annoying. And next to that, the stomach cramps can be quite painful. Most diarrhea cases begin abruptly but will resolve in a few days without treatment. Make sure, when you’re suffering from diarrhea, that you drink enough liquids (i.e. water and juices, beers and liquors do not count guys!) to avoid dehydration. If the symptoms like nausea, vomitting, diarrhea, stomach cramps or fever continue for more than 3 days, seek some treatment. HOW TO AVOID: Drink purified water only. Avoid eating or drinking beverages from street vendors or other establishments where unhygienic conditions are present. Avoid eating raw or under cooked meat and seafood. Avoid eating raw fruits and vegetables unless peeling before eating. But don’t let this information stop you trying new types of food during your holiday, but just remember to be careful.
Severe Sunburn or Heat Stroke
Its great when you go back to your home country and show of your exquisite brown tan. But be careful you don’t burn to much of that skin of yours or let your body litteraly get overheated. Now you might have already heard all the warnings about skin cancer and that you should protect your skin with sunscreen. Well, here we are, warning you again; buy sunscreen, wear a hat, limit the tanning sessions and try to stay out of the sun at least from 11AM till 3PM. A heat stroke is caused by dehydration or a overheated body. Avoiding a heat 54
T he Mag
stroke is based on the same principals of avoiding a sunburn, plus, keep your body hydrated (again alcohol, tea or coffee don’t count) and be careful with vigorous physical activities in the sun. Symptoms of a heat stroke are: high body temperature, the absence of sweating (with hot red or flushed dry skin), rapid pulse, difficulty breathing, strange behavior, hallucinations, confusion, agitation, disorientation, seizure or even a coma. HOW TO TREAT A HEAT STROKE VICTIM: In severe cases, get medical assistance immedeately. The important thing to achieve is to cool the victim. Get him or her in a shady place, remove the clothes and apply cool or tepid water to the skin. Get some ice packs and place them under the armpits and groins. Fan the victim to promote the cooling. Monitor the body temperature and continue the cooling efforts untill the temperature drops to 101/102 F (38.5 C).
Traffic Safety
We are not proud of the traffic conditions in Bali. Most local drivers are used to it, but for first timers in Bali, it can be a total different experience then back home. For them we recommend to take a taxi instead of renting a motorbike. More expensive? Yes. Safer? Absolutely.
Hotel Safety
Whether you are staying in a five star hotel or a youth hostel, do take care of slippery floors, the pool, stairs etcetera. There are many cases of broken bones, severe bruises, cuts, and some need serious treatment for it, such as an operation. Most of these cases happen to the senior tourist, where their bones aren’t as strong as they used to be. So take things easy and don’t rush. Better safe than sorry!
Water Safety
Be careful where you swim, some beaches have strong currents, sea urchins and sharp corals. Diving and surfing is fun, but it can also be dangerous. Many accidents happen from lack of concentration and under-estimating the danger of the sea. Major injuries or even death can happen during these activities. So always be extra cautious when you are having fun surfing, diving, or just plain swimming. Make sure to swim with a good swimmer, never swim alone, and only swim in safety zones (= between the red/yellow flags, a one-colored red flag means danger, do not swim there). As for swimming in general (including swimming at your hotel’s pool) make sure you warm up, to avoid any cramps during your swim.
