Holiday greetings from Bali!! Now that Christmas and New Year are approaching only within the count of days, Bali’s Hindu makeup is starting to blend with reds, greens and whites of the holiday season atmosphere. We, from The Mag, on the side of the excitement in welcoming these two jolly moments of the year, are also very thrilled realizing that we’ve been around in the island for nine months now. How time flies… Anyway, this fact drives us to better improve ourselves to not only entertain and provide the tourists with information about ‘everything Bali’, but also share some little happiness with those in need. Yep, we are introducing (and still working on) a new Baru di Bali initiative called ’Heart of Bali’ from which you as a reader can be of direct help to the charities in Bali (see page 27). For the Bali Road Trip, we visited one spot that most tourists would normally skip during their stay in Bali: Denpasar. In the capital city, we checked out several venues like museums, parks and traditional market (see page 18). After the exhausting, day-long trip to Denpasar, we spoiled ourselves within the peaceful and delightful surroundings of the Kupu Kupu Barong Beach Resort down in Tuban Beach (see page 50). And, of course, we need to eat, right? To satisfy the tummy business we went to Queen’s of India in Kartika Plaza Street and had some of the best Indian fusion cuisines for lunch (see page 40). For dinner, we hit the road of Petitenget and headed to Pandora where we had wonderful Italian delights (see page 46). Our Mr. Bartele is here again; this time, he is sharing with us his first ‘outdoor’ activity here on our beloved Island of Gods (see page 34). The Mag also made some new International friends in Bali and these new friends are sending out their Merry Christmas wishes to the world (see page 52, 54 and 56). Romancing Nature in Paradise Kuta is closed for New Year Don’t worry, it’s not the whole Kuta that is going to be closed, but only several roads heading to the area – that is on the afternoon (normally before five o’clock) of this coming 31st of December. People from outside Kuta will need to walk if they wish to go there for the New Year’s Eve. The road along Kuta Beach, which is normally jammed by cars and motorbikes, will be full of people getting ready to spend the last day of this year, even before the sunset. Trumpet, mask and balloon sellers will be everywhere along the road – trying to sell you an alternative for fireworks. Several stages will also be put up on the beach area, where a number of entertainments, such as live music, will take place. If you are staying within Kuta area, you might want to get up early in the morning on January 1st 2009 when you can breathe the fresh, unspoiled air due to the absence of motorized vehicles on the previous day. However, if you’re afraid to miss it, then better don’t go to sleep at all and party the whole night ‘till the morning comes (see page 62 for the ten best places to spend your New Year’s Eve).

Following the success of the first event, the government of Gianyar Regency together with Sekar Saji Nusantara Foundation held the second Gempita Gianyar last October 14-16 to promote Gianyar as the art and culture center of Bali. Carrying the theme “Romancing Nature in Paradise”, this event’s second outing exhibited not only art and cultural performances, but also nature and environment conservation activities. A choir that consisted of 175 children singing both Balinese and Indonesian folk songs marked the opening of the nature and environment conservation activities at the beach of Masceti in Gianyar on October 16, when vice regent of Gianyar along with several other high-rank regional government officials were planting coconut trees to prevent further coastal line erosion. The children from a local elementary school were releasing baby sea turtles that were put on banten (Balinese offering made from young coconut leaves that contains flowers, leaves and betel vine). When the baby turtles finally touched the water, the children were cheering to inspire their little sea-friends as they struggled, fighting with the waves to return to their home in the ocean.

Bali goes green To respond the recent climate change and anticipate any environmental disasters, the government of Bali is planning to plant one million trees. This 400-million-rupiahs program (around US$ 34,000) is aimed to plant local trees and reduce deforested areas in Bali by a minimum of 9,000 hectares every year. The planting will focus on the areas categorized as prone to floods and extreme drought that might lead to fires, such as the regencies of Badung and Karangasem. 14

Mt. Trash in Kuta During the wet season, when the “western wind season” is hitting Bali and affecting the sea waves, tourism activities along the Kuta Beach might get a little bit disturbed by the occurrence of trashes brought from the sea to the shore. Fish remains, tree branches and even the non-degradable wastes like plastic can be found floating and deserted on the beach area. To avoid massive piles of garbage in December, several actions like empowering the Kuta hawkers to clean up the beach on a daily basis has been undertaken. The Kuta Beach Task Force had also deployed around 20 dump trucks to clean up the area.

Bahiana rocks the Latin grooves Bahiana’s second Spectacular Salsa Competition turned out to be not only the competition for the salsa lovers in Bali, but also the audience as their cheers and applauds were competing with the loud Latin grooves played in the house. The competition turned the place as a rocking house packed with groovin’ and boogyin’ competing dancers as well as spectators, leaving a very little space for the servers to pass through with glasses of cocktails and bottles of beers.

I’m dreaming of a wet Christmas The last two Christmas in Bali were wet as constant torrential rain poured down the island in December (wet season). It was also noticeable, that instead of having Christmas ornaments, many churches in Bali were decorating themselves with bamboo poles (known as penjor), integrating the festivity of a joyful, Christian day with the local Balinese traditions – again, with puddles of water from last night’s rain giving the reflection of this yellowish (instead of reddish/whitish) Christmas on the asphalted road.

With the occurring rain, all venues ‘celebrating’ Christmas were packed with people: restaurants were super busy, bars and clubs were leaving only a very little space for people to move. If you are planning to spend your Christmas Eve in Bali, you might need to make an early reservation at the restaurant you want to go to for Christmas dinner with your beloved ones. Otherwise, especially if it is going to rain, you would end up wet by the street side; although, of course, having a wet Christmas could be so much fun. You’ll never know…

Canggu turns purple The road of Canggu Club on Friday (Nov. 28) turned purple and crowded with the opening of the supermarket Canggu Deli and The Loop Restaurant. Live music and fire dance were entertaining not only the crowd attending the party, but also the passers by on their cars and motorbikes. Glasses of the free flow cocktails were raised as several children from the area were releasing purple balloons to the air to mark to highlight the official presence of these two venues in the neighborhood.

The Mag . Bali Road Trip

here we were again, on the road of Bali in our cool Baru di Bali car. This time, we headed to where the museums, parks, traditional markets, government offices, monuments and traffics are to be found: Denpasar, the capital city of the Island of Gods. No skyscrapers or anything metropolitan decorating the city, but Denpasar still plays a significant role as the islandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s center of growth and wealth. Anyway, what is a city without the traffic; therefore, we squeezed our way in between the other vehicles during the morning rush hours when the office workers were jamming on Gajah Mada Street. With the hectic trading activities in Badung Market, which is also located in the area, as well as a big number of pedestrians walking on both sides of the road, this street looked vibrant and busy.

The two sides of Gajah Mada are full with shops providing residents and visitors with, among others, baby supplies, shoes, electronic goods, clothing, office accessories, building materials and restaurants. We were lucky to finally find a little spot to park, so we could join in the busyness â&#x20AC;&#x201C; on foot. With drizzle falling from the sky that morning, quite a lot of people were shading themselves in front of the shops although there were also a couple of others that kept on walking regardless the rain. Sweet-smelling from the fresh flowers sold on the street side pervading the entrance of Badung Market as the sun finally made appearance and stopped the rain. We went back to our car and continued our trip on the one-way road of Gajah Mada that led us to the Zero Kilometer of the city where a landmark named Catur Muka Statue (four-faced statue) sits on an intersection linking Surapati Street, Udayana Street, Veteran Street, and Gajah Mada Street.

On a corner of this intersection lies Puputan Badung Park which is designated for sports and cultural events with tree-lined roads surrounding this park that provide the shades for comfortable walks. This grass-carpeted park is also known as a place where chess enthusiasts in the city would gather and have a couple of game sessions on the tables set right next to giant pawns occupying a giant black-white checked ground. A lot of food and drink sellers are also occupying this part of the park. Aside from the trees, this park is also surrounded by Pura Agung Jagatnatha, Bali Museum, residence of Bali Governor and Udayana military headquarter. Set in traditional-looking grounds and adjacent to Pura Agung Jagatnatha, Bali Museum is a relaxing and affordable place where you can learn about Balinese history. This museum is split into four main buildings that house artifacts dating back to the megalithic period to modern time such as potteries, bronze spear, hand chisel, hand axe, sea shell fossil, ancient accessories (bronze necklace, earring and bracelet) and Balinese fine arts (paintings and wooden statues). The structure of the museum itself is like a palace-temple, complete with courtyards, pavilions and decorated temple gateways. Walter Spies played a part in the Bali Museum, helping put together the collection and organize the display. There will be individuals hanging around within the museumâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s compound offering their services as a guide. In case you need a guide, it is advised that you negotiate the price first; however, the museum provides English descriptions for each of the items displayed. In other words, as long as you can read English, you will be fine.

Back on to the road, we continued feeding our thoughts with more knowledge about history of Bali at the Renon Monument. This monument is built in the middle of Renon Square, a place where people usually do their daily exercises like jogging, playing football, basketball or even just relaxing walks in the mornings and late afternoons. The monument itself is dedicated to the struggle of the Balinese people and has now become one of the major attractions in Denpasar, especially with its temple-like structure. It houses tens of dioramas portraying stages that Bali has undergone starting from the ancient period up to the fight for Indonesian independence. Aside from the diorama, the monument also has an exhibition room where vintage, black and white photographs of Balinese heroes are displayed. Unfortunately, descriptions of each of the photographs are only provided in Indonesian language; thus, you might need an interpreter or guide if you wish to know the details of the photographs. Right in the middle of the monument is a big fish pond with fountains, where spiral stairs leading to a higher ground with a round space is located for visitors to enjoy a bird’s eye-view of the surrounding areas. From there, you can see the greeneries from the grass covering Renon Square with little spots of people moving from one point to another. Nonetheless, in general, the most unique thing about this place is that the whole construction is made of lava rock with beautiful structure and carving.

Offices of several foreign consulate generals like Australia and Japan, as well as the office of the Bali Governor are located surrounding this square. We concluded our Denpasar trip in an outskirt area of Depasar called Griya Anyar. We had absolutely no idea about the existence of this place before we accidentally came across it, while it actually ‘entertained’ us in a way that we’ve never experienced in any clubs or other venues offering live entertainment – something that people in general are craving nowadays. In Griya Anyar, we encountered a number of children who were having a great time by playing in a river in the area. We managed to find a spot to park and made our way down to the river, where we joined these kids and shared some ‘wet’ fun. The best part of the fun was when the kids taught us how to do somersaults and flip flop movements instead of jumping and diving into the water. One by one, they each took their turns and demonstrated on how to make a great fall from a river dam into the water to us. We went back home wet and messy, yet seriously happy and satisfied for not only we’ve gained more knowledge about Bali but also made friends with our new little buddies.

Serangan Island Serangan Island, also known as the Turtle Island, is an island used as a turtle breeding ground with extensive flat, unoccupied land. While it bears many tourism potentials, Serangan is still not that very much visited; probably because of the unclear entrance on the Sanur-Kuta Bypass, just after the crossroad to Benoa from Sanur direction. The newly asphalted road from the entrance leads to a road-bridge that spans around 1km connecting Serangan and the main island of Bali. The scene would not be that pleasant, though, as mountains of trashes are occupying the dump reclamation site which is also located on the area. But donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t worry, for a gap created by a swamp area prevents the bad smell to reach the road. However, passing the dump site onto the island, Serangan shows a different look with Pura Sakenan, one of the famous Balinese Hindu temples. As a public temple, Sakenan is very busy during the Galungan, and particularly in Kuningan, since all Balinese Hindus from all over the island can come and receive blessings. Just like any other holy and/or sacred places in Bali, tourists could also join in any rituals held in this temple, as long as they are properly dressed â&#x20AC;&#x201C; that is, with sarong and sash. Visitors usually also take the advantage of the shady area just before the temple as a place to relax while enjoying the view of deserted boats on the mangrove swamp.

After the temple is a small fishing village. During low tide, the fishermen would be busy fixing or even making their traditional fishing boats. After school hours, children can be seen playing in the water or on the many strewn boats. It was also funny: two little girls were running and hiding in between two boatwrecks as we wished to take their picture. Obviously to us at the time, this place has not seen that many tourists visiting. Finally, we got to the Turtle Conservation and Education Center (TCEC) after the village. There is no fancy setting in this place, but the noble intention to save the drastically decreasing number of sea turtles makes this conservation center worth a visit. Here, visitors are explained and shown about the life cycle of sea turtles in a simple way. Quarantine center is also provided to restore the health of wounded turtles. The locals help to nurture the growth of newly hatched turtles and release them at an age where survival rates are quite favorable. Away from the TCEC, Serangan displays a totally different natural make-up with flat expansion of lime landscape with many crossovers, which people commonly use to race pigeons or even cross-country running. The waters surrounding the eastern coast of Serangan are popular with surfers especially during the wet season when west-south-west winds blow.

“Whaattt?? You guys are from The Mag?!? Oh no, I should’ve put on some make up!” That was the first panicky tone uttered by Christos Liokouras as we visited his furniture shop in Kerobokan. But again, after sitting together with him and listening to him talk in his deep, husky voice, we realized that he would most of the time sound panicked – or angry. Talking about Christos would also mean talking about food and music. No, it’s NOT that because he has this Spanish guitar figure or he looks and smells like Lamb Taskebab; but it is because of his great passion for the two things. Being the man behind the band called Lio-Koustyx, Christos is regularly seen performing at several venues in Bali, including his restaurant Lio Pantarei in Seminyak, as the lead vocalist and guitarist. His distinctive voice delivers perfect Latino tunes that manage to make his audience stand on their feet and dance. Not only that, Christos claimed to be able to sing in 12 different languages; and so, we made him performed several numbers in different languages right on the middle of his shop. “You believe me now?!?!” he said after singing a number of songs in different languages, including Indonesian. “I start working from six in the morning up ‘till 3 o’clock at dawn!!!!! I’m very very busy business man!!!! After finished working in my shop, I go to my restaurant and sing there. After that, I continue performing somewhere else”, this owner of ten Lio Shops in Bali said. Yet, Christos still slots some time to learn Balinese dance. “I will be a great Balinese dancer!!!”

Christos even showed us his latest picture printed on his company profile book to confirm his statement. “See?! Balinese Checked Cloth

veryone visiting Bali will quickly notice the black and white (sometimes with grey) checked clothes wrapped around guardian statues, pavilions, temples, banyan trees, people and even stones. This clothe, which is called poleng, has a lot deeper meaning than only its role as a decoration, for it is considered as something incredible and powerful that has a special meaning for the Balinese Hindus as a representation of the cosmic duality. The Balinese see the world in terms of opposites, good and evil, day and night, mountain and sea, hell and heaven, right and left, young and old, male and female; in other words, one cannot exist without the other. The squares of equal size are perfect black and perfect white; they intersect and are not parallel. Grey squares contain strands of both and show that you cannot have one without the other. White represents good, the gods and health; black represents evil, the underworld and disease.

Poleng can be woven or printed on white cloth. Woven materials have a grey squares as well as black and white, created when the white and black yarns of weft and warp intersect. The black and white squares may be of different sizes depending on the cloth. When worn, the side of the material with bigger squares is worn on the inside, smaller squares on the outside. In Barong-Rangda dances, Rangdaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s warriors wear poleng as protection. The gamelan accompanying the dance is also wrapped with poleng, sometimes with red border. If poleng has a red edge around it, it represents the Trinity, Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. It is clear, therefore, that this clothe is closely associated with the gods while for humans, this cloth offers protection. It is sometimes used in temple ceremonies to cover the ground, so that people walking on it will be free of all possible evil spirits.

have nothing against Germans (stories about Germans often begin with this sentence) but this one couple would certainly not receive our ‘favorite guest reward’..... It was BuGils’ first outside event in Bali, and we had a small stand on the Kuta Beach Festival where we were allowed to sell food and beverage. As the beer prices are sensitive in Bali, we checked our neighboring stands and adjusted our prices to the overall price on offer, which was around Rp.20.000,-. The soon we had our sign up, the neighbors discounted their beers to Rp.15.000. A bit further down the path another lowered it to Rp.10.000. I noticed later that day that one even went below cost price. Instead of coordinating one price level, everybody went into a self destructive mood. Luckily we also sold food. We offered our Dutch frikandel speciaal, an imported sausage topped with mayo, curry sauce and chopped onions. For some Dutch tourists seeing a frikandel on the Bali beach clearly was the most exhilarating experience of their holiday. He lifted the sample and brought it close to his nose. He stamped one foot, as in unbelief, cursed again and now started looking for his wife, who was still a few stands behind. “HE! TRUUS! They %^*)#*&@ have frikandel here!”. Upon hearing her bewildered husband, Truus quickly pushed her baby stroller through the crowd in the direction of the BuGils stand. I was sitting with a beer (that I bought below cost price from the competition) opposite our BuGils stand, seeing this beautiful scene unfold. He scuffled the frikandel sample under Truus’ her sunburned nose. By accident or as a joke, the husband lifted the frikandel higher and her nose touched the mayonnaise. She was quiet for a second while her fully tattooed husband awaited her response. “....Yes.. It is a real one...’ , she concluded quietly with the mayo still hanging on the tip of her nose. She was speechless. They both were astonished. But they didn’t buy. Truus pointed at the pricelist. Her husband nodded. They calmly put the sample back, both had a last look and quietly walked further. What a fantastic scene... As usual in Bali, there were a lot of Australian passers by as well. The Australians are mostly in a good mood. Outgoing and friendly, were the Dutch are more superstitious, they don’t trust anybody or anything. The Australians don’t mind what food they eat, as long as the beer that goes with it is cold. Germans are hard to judge but easy to recognise. Normally they are loud, but if they want to inform you about something, they normally do this by whispering you in your ears. Its one of these things a bar man has to deal with, whispering Germans.

It was hot that day. The sun was burning and business was slow as I refused to go lower with the beer prices. Then I noticed this German couple. I knew they were German, because they approached our stand while whispering into each other ears. They straight walked up to the display with the food samples. ‘Is thies a frie sample?, the German asked politely. Before the staff could answer, they both lifted the frikandel sample to their mouth and ate it. Simultaneously. There are not many things that surprise me, but this was shocking, even for my standards. They quietly ate the samples, a complete frikandel speciaal and a kroket and a fish and chips, asked for a tissue and walked off! It all happened in just 20 seconds! Even the staff was stunned. ‘You don’t want to buy one!?’ one of the girls asked quickly asked. The German couple just waived goodbye with a kind of mean grin on their faces. Again they were whispering to each other, clearly content with their free bite. Bonny and Clyde. Partners in crime. I wanted to chase them and confront them, , but Widi stopped me. ‘Don’t worry Bart. That sample was the same as the one the Dutch lady had her nose in this morning. Besides, these mayo filled samples had been in the burning sun for at least 5 hours. Pasti sakit perut mereka... (for sure they will get stomach cramps)’... We didn’t make any money on that day. But it didn’t matter. I had enough stuff to fill up another newsletter. I have never seen that couple again, but let me whisper you something: IF you happen to know an unhealthy looking German couple in Bali, tell them you know a place where they can get a really good frikandel...

Bali is a Religious Harmony Religious atmosphere could be felt in an instant when you step feet in Bali. The feeling would flow strongly from the holy spring of Balinese with its estuary of Hindu Religion, as most of Balinese people adheres Hindu. ueen’s of India is entertaining its customers with some of the best Indian fusion cuisines conveniently at the heart of the busy Kartika Plaza Street in Kuta. Also adjacent to Bali Dynasty Hotel, the restaurant’s open plan ensures the breeze to sway in at any given time; thus creating the precise bracing ambient that goes perfect with the range of dishes and gourmet masterpiece listed on the a la carte menu. Paintings of women wearing traditional Sari clothes along with statues representing the characters from the Hindu epics, Queen’s of India blends a modern building structure with a traditional India atmosphere. Queen’s of India’s outdoor dark-brown rattan tables set just a step away from the sidewalk are so catchy that we decided to give this restaurant a try for lunch. A friendly and attentive staff greeted and escorted us to a table while another was handing us the menu. None of us were familiar enough with Indian cuisines, and it took quite a while for us to decide on what to order. On the side of our confusion, we had Pappadum, a typical accompaniment to a meal in India, delivered to our table as a compliment. The staff that brought up the Pappadum helped us in choosing the dishes, and finally we could make the order: Chicken Sizzler, Mutton Handi, Chicken Hot Bowl Rice, Nan and Lassi.

Lassi came first to our table. This cool and creamy drink of churned yogurt is rural Punjab’s favorite appetizer served either sweet or salty; we had it sweet, and it tasted wonderful even from the very first sip. The yogurt in Lassi is home-made and only to be used two to three days to keep up with the quality. Just when we were enjoying the cold Lassi, the noisy, smoky and a plateful of excitement from the Chicken Sizzler finally arrived on our table. The cuts of the skinned chicken with salad and onion were so hot and spicy – exactly the way we love it. Another sip of Lassi cooled down the blast from the sizzler and we were ready for the Mutton Handi (a preparation of mutton with home-made masala cooked in clay pot). We saved up the yummy sauce from Mutton Handi and used it as the dipping for the Nan, leavened bread made with refined flour. We finished the Chicken Hot Bowl quickly after that. The chicken with makhanwala curry, lemon curry sauce and rice really DID make us full with satisfaction. Yet, we still had a room to spare for desserts; and so, we ordered Sizzling Brownie (brownie topped with vanilla ice cream, nuts and chocolate sauce served on a hot plate), Gulab Jammun (dumpling of reduced milk served hot with sugar syrup) and Kulfi (a traditional Indian ice cream). The three dessert items along with the other dishes we had were all fabulous that we fell in love with Indian cuisines just in a heartbeat. We would for sure go back to the Queen’s of India.

Pandora T

he name might sound a little scary as it may well remind you of a box that when opened was releasing all evils and troubles for humankind and leaving hope inside. However, Pandora in Petitenget is in contrast, for it is a romantic venue which serves appetizing classic Italian cuisines that once you have a bite of any dish served you would crave for more. Structured in a classic Italian style, the restaurant is set vague with soft lighting and has the wooden oven sited at a place where customers could see their pizza being prepared. Pandoraâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s outdoor part has tables set on the grass from which the diners could enjoy their meals under the stars of the Bali night sky.

We were busy checking out the place and enjoying the calm, soothing atmosphere of the restaurant when realizing that actually one of us had already made the orders without the rest knowing. Since he has dined in this restaurant for quite many times, the rest of us felt pretty safe knowing that we were going to have great meals for dinner. Just in time when we were chatting and laughing while enjoying our beers, all the sudden a number of staffs carrying a number of plates were heading to our table. We were a bit confused, except the one making the order. It turned out that he ordered that the appetizer, main dish and dessert to be brought all at once to the table. We went all wild and confused on what to have first; thus, one of us had the dessert as the appetizer and the other way around. Profiterol Croma e Cioccolato, which is a yummy cookie with chocolate topping, went in first to the tummy – while it supposed to be the last eaten. But we didn’t care, because this small cookie was great that finally all of us had it as the starter. After that we kept on going randomly with the rest of the dishes on the table. Mahimahi al Cartoccio al Forno was our next ‘victim’. All of us went crazy grabbing the mahimahi plate to make sure that we could get a piece of this fine delicacy. Similar madness happened on the way we treated the plates of Focaccia, Gnocchi Verdi Ripieni Prosciutto Mozzarella and Risotto Asparagus Bacon with Mushroom as well as Pizza 4 Stagioni (four-flavored pizza). The funny thing is, we had the Italian Appetizer (salami, olive, cheese and ham) at the very last time; while, obviously from the name, it should’ve gone first. All and all, we had an incredible, ‘unusual’ dinner at Pandora at the time. The restaurant’s perfect ambient would soon go even a lot more pleasant with the scheduled “Pandora Band” with Max (owner) as the band’s vocalist to deliver some blues, rock n’ roll and fusion tunes live for the customers on January next year.

Believe it or not...

The Rain Tamer Bali is blessed with the sun that shines all year round. Yet, a little shower from the sky might still happen, especially during the current wet season. The rain could be disturbing at a certain level; thus, will affect tourism and other activities in general. But not for Ida Bagus Ketut Oka, for he knows how to tame the rain and prevents it from occurring. Mr. Oka is a rain tamer from Mengwi (near Tabanan) whose ‘service’ is often used for wedding ceremonies, outdoor parties and the like. This gifted Balinese man is believed to be able to turn the dark-clouded sky into a clear-blue one. This magical practice Mr. Oka does turns out to be common in Bali and several other areas in Indonesia especially during the wet season. “Back in 1977, I felt like being moved to do some special prayers. It’s a bit hard for me explain, but my heart told me to do a ritual and ever since I had the gift to tame the rain,” Mr. Oka said, telling the story when he first acquired his skill. He also added that the gift he has now could be inherited from his father, “My father also has the ability to do this. However, I don’t know if any of my children also ‘inherit’ the gift, because this is something that can’t be learnt. You need to have the call.” In doing the rituals to stop the rain, several special offerings are needed and prayers are made. “People might think that I can control the rain, but they are wrong. I’m only the mediator. It is all depending to Sang Hyang Widi Wasa (God), that is why I need to do the prayers.

t was seven in the evening when I got to Kupu Kupu Barong Beach Resort in Tuban after a long, exhausting day cruising around the city of Denpasar. Looking at my tired face and the backpack I was carrying, the security guard responded quickly and showed me the way to the reception while politely asking me questions like, “have you booked your room, sir?” and even, “first time in Bali?” The last question made me giggled actually. Such greeting was not the one I expected to come out from a security guard; but it somehow assured me that a wonderful, careful treatment was something I would get during my stay there. Mr. Lilik, the receptionist greeted me on the front office, where I had a cold towel and hot tea with lemon grass delivered only shortly after to welcome me in a compound that in night time looked almost like a ‘green’ fortress with walls covering the place from the public’s eyes on the street of Wana Segara Tuban. Yet, once I passed the reception, even at night I could clearly see the hidden beautiful lush, tropical garden. The sound of running water from a nearby fountain made me fantasized that I was lost somewhere in a tropical rainforest. But the sound of rolling and crashing waves of the Indian Ocean woke me up from my fantasy; it added even more mesmerizing feelings. My room was ‘hidden’ behind a bamboo fence, which again, made me wonder on how it would look like in the inside. Stepping in, I faced a number of steps leading to the terrace; but the best thing was the private plunge pool with a day-bed where I could lay down and relax next to it. I didn’t really care about the room for a moment because I was so excited about the pool; but when Mr. Lilik showed my way inside and explained about everything in the room, I was put in between two tricky options: should I use the plunge pool first or just relax in the wonderful, comfortable room instead.

I had a separate living room and a spacious bedroom with all the comforts and facilities provided. Indonesian wayang or puppet hung on the wall and the room’s wooden, cubical furniture, create a fine-looking blend of ethnic-contemporary structure. Lilik flew me away to cloud nine when he showed me the bathroom with its big stone bathtub surrounded by natural brick walls. Pebbles were everywhere covering the floor with square pedals to step onto the tub and the shower. A wooden bench is also provided in case I felt lazy to stand up while enjoying my shower with the warm drops falling straight from the top of my head – just like playing in the rain. To conclude his introduction, Lilik opened up a bottle of rosé and poured it in a glass and handed it over to me while saying, “Welcome to Kupu Kupu Barong, I hope you a pleasant stay. Enjoy the rest of the bottle, it’s in the house.” I spent the morning in the natural, green-stoned swimming pool overlooking the ocean. My plan to stay in the pool for 30 minutes lasted an hour longer instead. It was already 9.30 in the morning and so I rushed my way to the restaurant and had breakfast. Kupu Kupu Barong Beach Resort has a romantic, elegant oceanfront restaurant that serves a selection of world-class French and International cuisine. Dining areas occupy an open area on the terrace covered with a traditional Balinese roof, where stylish decor is complemented by Indonesian artwork. a merry little Christmas It is normally so easy for me to put aside the fact that I’ve been away from my family for quite some time, especially due to the daily routines I have. Today, as that time of year to glorify the birth of Jesus of Nazareth is approaching in no time, the past suddenly comes stepping into my present bedroom where everywhere on the walls and ceiling I can clearly see the pictures of ‘white Christmases’ I had with my family. But the sounds of geckos, the singing frogs, the chanting tropical insects and the little raindrops from the sky, I come quick to become aware of a different kind of Christmas I’d be having this year in Bali: no family, no snow, no street choir humming the Christmas carols. I could still clearly remember several Christmases I spent in New York, where my family and I together with the other residents and visitors would gather at the Rockefeller Center to attend an annual tradition to light the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree early in December. With snow falling on our heads, all of us were excitedly waiting ‘till the clock stroke seven in the evening, when thousands of lights attached to miles of cable wiring the around 80 feet tall spruce tree would be put up to shine. It was so glamorous and merry. But again, it was in New York, the city of blinding lights, an apparently part on Earth that receives snow during winter and a perfect spot to go with Irvin Berlin’s “White Christmas”. It won’t snow on Christmas in Bali, but it won’t stop me from taking part in the joyful moment the whole Christians in the world celebrate. Yea…Judy Garland’s “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” is just the song to go with in Bali. But as I went to a beach in Seminyak, I was so surprised to see “Merry Xmas” written on the sand that a hot Bali day feels like a cold winter night in New York. I guess it was due to the spirit of the holiday season that made me feel like that. Wow, I’ve never had any idea that Christmas was so beautiful until that day. And I can’t believe that I’m actually saying this. Christmas is not all about the snow, street choir or blinding lights of a big Christmas tree. My family? I have them in my heart. Now I’m certain that I will have a merry and wonderful Christmas this year, although only the little one…I could feel it. Merry Christmas everyone…whoever you are…wherever you are… Have yourself a merry little Christmas Let your heart be light…

Ubud is largely known as a remarkable center of fine arts, dance and music. The spectacular views of green paddy terraces makes Ubud as one of the most visited areas in Bali.

23 Ujung Water Palace Taman Ujung or also known as the Ujung Water Palace was built in 1919 by the late King of Karangasem, I Gusti Bagus Jelantik, to welcome and serve important guests and Kings from other country.

1 Uluwatu Uluwatu is known for its breathtaking cliff views, with its spectacular temple overlooking the clear blue water of the ocean below. Plenty of monkeys inhibit the area. Kecak dance is also regularly performed in Uluwatu’s amphitheatre.

Bali is one of the tens of thousands islands in the Indonesian archipelago that lies between the country’s most populated island, Java, and Lombok. It is also one of the country’s most developed provinces with the capital in Denpasar, located on the southern part of the island. Bali is divided into 8 regencies (Badung, Bangli, Buleleng, Gianyar, Jembrana, Karangasem, Klungkung and Tabanan) and 1 city (Denpasar). Unlike most of the Muslimmajority Indonesia, around 94% out of Bali’s 3 million population adhere to Balinese Hinduism, which is a combination of the existing local beliefs and Hindu influences. As the main tourist destination in Indonesia, Bali is renowned for its highly developed arts, including music, dance, sculpture, painting, metalworking and leather. The island is also the home of wildlife such as hundreds of bird species (including the endangered Bali Starling), Indian Muntjac, Mouse-deer, Leopard Cat, Black Giant Squirrel, and several species of macaque and leaf monkey.

The island’s countless natural irresistible charms have awarded Bali as one of the world’s most visited holiday destination. With its tropical climate (temperatures averaging 31 degrees Celsius, 88 fahrenheit), Bali is warm all year round – which is perfect to explore its smoking volcanoes, stepped rice fields, remote beaches, towering cliffs, famous surf breaks and the majestic thousandyear-old temples. The hospitable and friendly natives of the Balinese and their way of life are by many considered as a magnet, inspiring those who have been in the island to go back again and those who have not to come.

Bargaining in Bali 1. No matter how much the vendors give as the opening price, you have to bargain for as much as half (or even less) of the price. 2. It is better for you to go to the shop that has everything: t-shirts, shorts, wood handicrafts, etc. By doing a one-stop shopping, which means you will buy quite a lot, it is easier for you to get a bigger discount. 3. Since there are ranges of shops offering pretty much the same things, you can always walk away from one shop to another if a deal cannot be reached. But walk slowly. Normally, if you offer a reasonable price on a bargain, in which the vendor can still make some profits and the price is good for you, the vendor would call you back to his/ her shop as you walk away. 4. Try not to be not so apparent that you really want the thing you are looking at on a shop; the vendors are not stupid and can smell your desire, thus will take the advantage by putting the price high. 5. Tell the vendor that if he/she gives you a good price, than you will tell your other friends to shop from him/her. 6. Know the martket prices, or, pretend you do. By saying “I’ve seen this product before much cheaper” will probably lead to a cheaper price. 7. Have fun and stay friendly. Bargaining is part of the culture and it should be a fun activity.

Surfspots in Bali A Medewi Medewi is a perfect fun wave for all surfers. Come early to avoid onshore winds. The swell is generally smaller than at Kuta spots. B Balian Balian gets some swells and is a quiet place in north Bali. Its location that is close to the main road makes surfers can easily access this place. C Canggu & Pererenan Canggu and Pererenan are places that most surfers will know about, with their larger than Kuta swells, sandy beach and not much else. Canggu however is becoming better known in tourist and expat circles. D Kuta Reef Kuta Reef is an exposed reef break that is often working. May – October (Dry Season) is the best time of year for waves here. E Belangan The reef in Belangan is close to shore and a short paddle out. Belangan is a very well-known break and can get very crowded in the peak season. F Dreamland Dreamland is famous for its waves that can peel perfectly for hundreds of meters over the reef. The waves are also reserved for expert surfers only. Swimming here is advisable only on low tide. G Bingin Bingin gets very crowded through the peak season with only one small take off area. The wave itself is pretty mechanical, but short.

K Uluwatu There are 4 different sections at Uluwatu: 1. Temples which is a long and hollow wave that works on the mid to high tide. 2. The Peak right in front of the warungs in line with the cave also best on the high tide. 3. Racetrack is a super fast with a barrel that works on the low tide, but gets seriously shallow. 4. Outside Corner is considered by many to be one of the best waves anywhere in the world. The corner won’t even start to break unless the swell is at least in the 8’ range. L Nyang-Nyang Nyang Nyang beach is known as one of great spot to surf in Bali. Hiding from the crowd of the people plus big and huge wave makes this beach like a secret paradise for the surfer. M Green Bali Green Ball is situated at the bottom of a cliff. No worries going down but after you have been surfing for a couple of hours the return leg is a bit harder. N Nusa Dua To get to this reef you have to drive in to the town itself and then weave your way south, there are a couple of other good waves in this area also, so it pays to do a bit of exploring. O Sri Lanka North of Nusa Dua is Sri Lanka, a bowly right, which breaks into a deep water channel. P Sanur Reef Sanur Reef is a sheltered reef break that only works once in a while. November - April (Wet Season) provides optimum time of year for the waves.

H Lebih The surf break in Lebih is greatly affected by direction of the swell.

Q Padang Galak Padang Galak is a reliable rivermouth beach break north of Sanur. The surf break is quite popular here, but only works under certain conditions.

I Impossibles Impossibles is the least crowded surfing area in Bali. It is located between Bingin and Padang Padang, so if you are at either of those two places you can see what is happening at Impossibles.

R Ketewel The surfing crowd at Ketewel usually consists of locals and Japanese, including girls on body boards. Ketewel seemed like a place beginners/intermediates might enjoy, not people looking for epic surfing.

J Padang Padang Padang Padang only starts to work when a big swell is running. It is of an easy paddle out through the channel.

S Padang Bai Padang Bai has the flat bottomed mixed reef and sandy bottom with some walls.
