However, during certain times like big holidays, when all the Balinese Hindus across the island are flocking the temples and decorating the streets, the festivity of the religious merit becomes so apparent. One of these most apparent rituals is the Purnama (full moon). Considered as an auspicious day by the Balinese people, many important Hindu ceremonies and rituals fall upon or are held at this time. TEAM'S NOTE

Here Comes the Sun... We’d like to send our deepest condolences for the families of victims of the recent earthquake in Sumatera. The 7.6-magnitude earthquake that rippled through Sumatera claimed at least 800 lives. On the other hand, weather seems to have behaved nicely on our beloved island Bali. The sun makes a constant appearance and the frequent drizzles have all (hopefully) gone for now. We need to remind you, however, that it could be really hot from time to time. Luckily we have a new neighbor that can help us cool down the blazing midday sun. Yes, Delicioso Ice Cream can now also be found right in front of our office on Jalan Laksmana (Oberoi Street) directly opposite of Mykonos restaurant. If you happen to be in this area, you should definitely should make a stop and try one of their many yummy flavors. The popular Ubud Writers & Readers Festival has just ended and the Nusa Dua Festival is already waiting to kick off this coming October 17-21. Another huge event on the island’s calendar is the Balinese Hindu holiday of Kuningan on the 24th (following the Galungan Day on the 14th). Make sure to have your camera ready to capture the moments of Kuningan, one of the biggest holidays in Bali—If you are still on the island during that day. Our culinary adventure for this issue’s The Mag brought us to both Passargad and Nammos (pages 32 and 38). Our Feature Story talks about a religious event that is not so religious anymore: Purnama (full moon) and to learn about how the Purnama’s significance has changed over recent times, proceed to page 46. Our other regular features are still here; therefore, enjoy reading! And enjoy Bali too!

Ngurah Rai Airport to be expanded After being delayed for months, the expansion of Ngurah Rai International Airport will finally start early January 2010. The project will cover the extension of both international and domestic passenger terminals, parking lots and other supporting facilities. This expansion, however, will affect hundreds of residences and public facilities in nearby area of Tuban in Kuta. The design would a modern and futuristic style, with a more traditional Balinese design inside the airport.

KLM flies to Bali soon

The 2,000 banknote

KLM Royal Dutch Airlines will effectively recommence service between Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport and Bali's Ngurah Rai Airport on December 6, 2009. The new KLM service connecting Amsterdam and Denpasar will fly three times each week. Flights in both directions will have an intermediate stop in Singapore and be operated with Boeing 777-300 aircraft configured to carry 390 Economy and 35 Business Class passengers.

Bank Indonesia has released a new 2009 series banknote, IDR 2,000. The currency is illustrating the portrait of Prince Antasari from Indonesia’s South Kalimantan on the obverse and the rare, indigenous Dayak Dance on the reverse. Though not like the almost-identical 10,000 and 100,000 notes, the 2,000 note shares a rather common characteristic with the one of 5,000. therefore it is important for you not to confused the two notes.

Governor discourages new club plan

Nusa Dua Fiesta 2009

Bali's Governor Made Mangku Pastika is discouraging the owners of the land where former Sari Club once stood from their plans to build a new night spot on the land. The Governor confirmed that the Provincial Government of Bali and the Regency Government of Badung will continue to facilitate the building of the Bali Peace Park, an idea conceived and promoted by the victims and the families of the 2002 Bali bombing organized under the Bali Peace Park Associations. 14

Sobek White Water Rafting

Row, row, row your boat roughly down the stream

THE MAG

Being in Bali’s main drags could at times wear you off, especially if you are holidaying on the island for a period of more than two weeks. Then again, visiting Bali’s off beaten path doesn’t always come easy, especially if you are new to the island. Luckily, as Bali’s tourism is becoming more popular, more and more tour operators are now offering fun activities in areas that quite a few visitors to the island don’t really know about. One of these operators is SOBEK, a pioneer in whitewater rafting. Beginning its Bali chapter in 1989, SOBEK ensures the tourists to enjoy the thrill of the rapids, the beauty of the scenery and observe rural Balinese people in their day- today life on the rivers of Telaga Waja in Karangasem and Ayung in Gianyar—both are perfect playground for this exciting sport. This adventure is a mix of wild excitement, breath taking views and well guided, informative, sightseeing using the safety-approved equipments. Guests will be given paddles and fitted with life-jackets and safety helmets before receiving a quick lesson on how to handle the raft. The adventure begins in the hills, where the river propels its guests through narrow gorges and steep canyons to terraced plains with village children play on the riverbanks. SOBEK’s rafting guides know the Ayung and Telaga Waja Rivers better than most because they were born, raised or live along the rivers. Their knowledge of the rivers and areas’ history ensures your whitewater adventure is not only fun but interesting as well. You can choose the twenty-five Class II & III rapids that make up the 11km descent of spectacular tropical rainforests and breathtaking waterfalls of Ayung River or the 14km of action-packed rapids of the beautiful jungle scenery through steep valleys and narrow gorges along Telaga Waja River. If you are looking for a great action, fun and safe adventure all the way, then SOBEK is an option that you should consider. This exhilarating action is also adequate for children above seven years old. Pick up and transfer services as well as meals are provided. To book for SOBEK rafting, you can go to Explore Bali on Oberoi Street (right across Mykonos).

Asia's Tallest Bridge

T

ukad Bangkung (literally “the river of mother pig”) is a river that holds an interesting story in Bali. Located up north at the tip of Badung Regency, it is said that the river is the home of an invisible female pig. In the old days, when an adequate road in the area hasn’t been built, this pig required a number of ‘sacrifices’; thus, strange accidents claiming people’s lives took place quite frequently. Tukad Bangkung area now has one of the smoothest asphalted roads in Bali. Little shrines, constantly visited by local residents with their offerings, have also been erected in several spots down the hill, along the banks of the river to appease the ‘hungry’ female pig. Not only that,

18

THE MAG Asia's Tallest Bridge

a bridge to cross the hill and connect Badung with Bangli (Kintamani area) has also been spanning for almost a year now. Known as the Tukad Bangkung Bridge, the bridge spans as long as 360m with the highest pillar at 71m plus 41m foundation dug down into the earth. These numbers make Tukad Bangkung as the currently longest bridge in Bali and the highest one in Asia for now. Built in balanced cantilever technology, the bridge is expected to last 100 years. To minimize impact to magnificent natural beauty in the area, the bridge was not built with canopy. The construction is predicted to stand earthquake up to 7 on the Richter scale. A warung selling meatballs and local snacks stands at one end of the bridge for visitors to enjoy the view. If you wish to hear fascinating stories about the area, then you can always have a chat with the lady from the warung. To visit the bridge, head to Plaga Village, Petang District in Badung Regency.

There is a great Russian restaurant I tried in Nusa Dua called Slovyanka. The atmosphere and food really made me feel at home. It made me want to go back to Russia.

There are a lot of good places to eat on Poppies (Kuta), and they’re very cheap as well. I really like eating Padang food; it’s cheap and also very delicious.

Every time I come to Bali I always have to eat at Mojo’s Flying Burrito (Kuta). I can’t get enough of the Nacho’s and the portions are huge. I usually have to split with my friends.

Massimo (Sanur) serves up the best Pizzas I have ever tasted. I’ve eaten there nearly every evening since I'm in Bali and tried all their Pizzas. The gelato is also very delicious.

I guess it would be Goodys (Legian - Blue Ocean Beach). The food is affordable and the taste is not bad. Another good thing is they are opened until late, so I can still get a bite after a night of drinking.

There’s this really nice Thai restaurant I tried last night in Seminyak (Lemon Grass, TM). The place is really cozy and the food is great, not as spicy as I thought it would be.

Can’t mention one place in particular, but I like all the food on "Eat Street" (Jl Laksmana Seminyak, TM). It really is an eat street, with all those restaurants to choose from. It should be called food heaven instead.

Nero (Legian) would be the best place for me. The food is nice, from the tappas to the main courses, everthing was delicious. Would I go there again? Yes I would.

THE MAG Heart of Bali : Bali Heart Foundation

What is your organization and what does it do? Established in 1997, Bali Hati is a non-profit foundation that sponsors projects for the underprivileged in Balinese communities. Bali Hati places special emphasis on education and health. In August 2005, the government of Bali conducted a search for the most outstanding non-profit foundation in all of Bali. Bali Hati was selected as the BEST in the regency of Gianyar and then went forward to compete against the other seven regencies on the island. Bali Hati was selected the BEST in Bali. Then, from each of 33 provinces in Indonesia, the top foundations were invited to compete in Jakarta, Indonesia’s capital. Bali Hati was named the Number One Foundation in Indonesia.

What are your short-term and long-term goals? Our short-term goal is really simple: to raise the community's awareness of various prevailing social, economic and health problems, and heighten community participation in alleviating these problems. Our long-term goals are: • to improve the quality of the island's human resources through implementing formal and informal educational opportunities; • to provide scholarships to capable students who could not otherwise afford the costs of education; • to improve the level and quality of the island's public health through various well-focused, effective community-based health programs. Has your organization made (or is making) any progress in achieving its goals? Our school programs are running well and we are going to expand our school up to High School level. We have only the land purchased and was donated from an American couple but not the building yet. We are planning to have a fund raising but are open also to have any sponsor who would like to make a donation to make this happens. Have your actions made any significant change in line with the goals and missions of your organization? Yes, our actions have made significant changes, but still we have to make improvements and work harder. Fund is the main problem to run the program. Bali Heart Foundation P.O. My First Trip to Bali

Regine, France

26

THE MAG My First Trip to Bali

Arriving in Bali at the age 0f 44, Regine found refuge in Bali from an illness she suffered back in her homeland. Realizing that Bali miraculously healed her and had so much to offer, Regine left France to start a new life. Now she is the proud owner of Bahiana, a very popular salsa club in Dyahna Pura (Seminyak).

When was your first trip to Bali and why? I first came to Bali in December 1995 for a friends wedding. I was already planning to leave France and find somewhere new to live. When I reached Bali, I somehow knew that it was the right place for me. The whole process for me to leave France and to actually start living here in Bali only took me two weeks. What made you decide to move here? Well other than Bali being a beautiful island it has given me so much that I could never get when I was in France. I was able to quickly get a job for a local company here called Animale where I worked for eight years before owning Bahiana. The people of Bali are always very friendly to me and that is why this island holds a sentimental place in my heart. Other than that, I wasn’t able to have a child in Bali, but now I’m raising a young Balinese girl, who calls me her mother.

What was your best thing that has happened to you here? Too many wonderful things have happened to me since I started living in Bali. Yet, for me one of the best things is having the chance to raise a child in Bali and being free from my sickness. What is the biggest change since your trip back then? Back when I first came here, everything seemed so traditional and natural. Nowadays there are too many apartments, villas and big buildings in Bali. I don’t think that this is the right style for Bali. But the one thing that hasn’t changed is the laid-back and relaxed attitude of both local and foreign residents in Bali. What was the best hangout place back then? I was already too old to go partying, so I didn’t hangout a lot. I preferred to stay at home and relax, but now that I own a club my time is mostly spent there.

IN FOCUS

You’ll Never be Alone Balinese society is very community oriented, especially since many rituals and ceremonies require massive efforts. A person must actively involve in village meetings, play an instrument in the orchestra (gamelan) or dance in ceremonies. If a child in a family is having his tooth filed, the rest of the village's women will help cook and prepare, and the men help erect a stage and decorate the house. Life in Bali is never alone. In other words, being ‘inactive’ has its own price. Ignoring an invitation (wedding as an instance) will result in a warning. If three invitations are ignored, then the village may

30

THE MAG You'll Never be Alone

take actions. Since land is usually owned by the community, the village may revoke one’s privilege to cultivate the land. This would mean that the inactive person must leave the village and be a total outcast. Aside from that, in Balinese society, descent, status and inheritance are traced through the male line. While a high-caste Balinese man could marry anyone he pleases (even if she is not from Bali), a woman may only marry someone of at least the same rank or risk herself of becoming a social outcast. A Balinese woman ‘marries out’, leaving her home to become the member of her husband’s community. Although modernity has entered the island, this so-called ancient social system is still widely practiced.

n the far end of Dhyana Pura Street, not far from the beach is a quaint little restaurant serving delicious traditional Persian delicacies. Reminiscent of the stories of the 1001 Arabian night’s fairytale, this simplistic designed restaurant offers hearty dishes at a price that won’t burn a whole in your wallet. Not many people are familiar with Persian food and may be afraid to venture into flavors they are unfamiliar with. But rest assured, if you are familiar with kebabs you’ll enjoy what Passargad has to offer. The cook of Passargad is somewhat a specialist in Persian delicacies and has 6 years experience in highly rated restaurants and hotels in Dubai. This is a major plus for such a small restaurant, so the food is presented beautifully with a flavor that is simply delicious. Serving portions are also very generous so you know

Shirazi Salad

Kashke Bademjan

Passargad Special Kebab

you are getting the best of both worlds. A good starter that will ready your pallet is the Kashke Bademjan, which is a mixture of mashed fried eggplant, sliced fried onions and mint leaves combined with the a traditional Iranian white sauce. Served in a large bowl, this dish is eaten with bread that you can use to scoop up the Kashke Bademjan. The flavor of the mint is very refreshing and combines well with the flavor of the savory egg plant and onion mash. Another refreshing starter is the Shirazi Salad which consists of tiny diced cucumber, onion and tomato dressed in lemon juice and sprinkled with dry mint. The lemon juice dressing maybe slightly sour, but is a great starter. A great main course that can be enjoyed by a small party of three to four people is the Passargad Special Kebab, which is a platter of three different meat kebabs served with your choice of side dish. The three meats used are beef, fillet chicken and a ground lamb, commonly used in Persian or Middle Eastern cooking. Apart from the large kebab platter, each kebab can

be ordered individually for those eating solo or with a partner. You can choose between three different side dishes for all main courses which consist of steamed rice, French fries or steamed vegetables. The seriously affordable prices combined with the rich taste of the restaurant’s splendid menu will certainly turn Passargad as a must-eat destination in Dhyana Pura.

Penjor

A penjor is a long tapered bamboo pole that is stood vertically in the ground, often on the roadside, and decorated in coconut leaves. Balinese Hindus erect a penjor in front of their houses to symbolize the dominance of dharma (good) over adharma (evil), as well as offering thanks to God for the fruits of the Earth. A small cage in the shape of a triangle and made from bamboo, called sanggah cucuk, is attached about halfway down the pole. Offerings are placed in this part and it is considered to be a temporary ‘throne’ for the Gods when they come down to Earth for Galungan. Long strips of yellow and white materials attached on a penjor are to symbolize that it is a holy offering.

eing culinary adventurous finally paid off when I visited Nammos Beach Club at Karma Kandara Resorts. I mean, I fell in love with this place when I saw it for the first time from a friend’s Flickr picture gallery. Only looking at it through a picture, I knew that I could spend hours and hours there. Bali is also known for its many beaches; Nammos has one of the best. The water was perfect, the sand was magnificent and the drinks were excellent. Going down to Nammos is literally an adventure itself. Stepping in from Karma’s entrance I walked through a lovely archway with honeycomb walls of coralline limestone. For those brides and grooms to be, this site is certainly a place for you to do your pre-wed photo sessions. Karma’s outstanding architecture and interiors set on the cliff top of Ungasan made my way even a lot more amusing.

seafood, spinach and feta pizza Karma Breeze (vodka and cranberry juice build over ice, served long and crowned with mango juice)

The best part of the adventure was when I was led to a private inclinator that provided the access to the nature’s heaven below at the beach club. Reaching Nammos, I was on a raised bamboo deck that houses a kitchen, complete with traditional wood-fired pizza oven, and a bar stocked with top shelf liquors, champagne and, of course, the ice-cold beer. Guests can lounge on daybeds, in private pavilions or perch on stools at the bar. Manicured lawns are set with sun lounges to offer a cool spot for dining. Taking the inspiration from a distinct Greek island in the Aegean, complete with indigenous grass roof and bamboo platform, Nammos Beach Club lays over a pristine sweep of white sand and a tranquil turquoise lagoon whose only access is through Karma Kandara’s private inclinator, which carries guests effortlessly up and down 100 meters of steep limestone cliff.

Nammos Beach Club fits very well for those who love lazing around in an air of tropical breeze accompanied by excellent service. Sipping signature cocktails, enjoying the Mediterranean inspired menu (including a well stocked oyster bar) or enjoying water sports in the lagoon could come flawless.

BELIEVE IT OR NOT

Bridge that Crosses Two Worlds This is another story about how ‘technologically

advanced’ Bali is. As a holiday destination mainly

known for its culture and traditionalism, it might come a bit shocking to know that Bali has already adopted

the kind of ‘technology’ only seen in futuristic movies. In one of the previous issues, we told you about the

‘sacred gate’ that once opened, you will see a different world on the other side. This time, we are telling you

about a bridge that can transport you (or rather suck you) into another world.

The bridge is called Bona Bridge. Located just

hundreds of meters away from the sacred gate in Kerta Gos (klungkung), local stories have it that the bridge has been (yep, until recently) transporting several

daydreaming or thinking about something so hard that they turned unconscious. Once awaken, there

they were, in a world totally strange and foreign. Some of the locals whose friends or relatives were ‘sucked’ said that after missing for a couple of days or even

weeks, they found their lost friends or relatives laid out unaware by the bridge side. With empty looks in their

eyes, these people could only murmur “I see thousands of trees”, “what a lovely greenery” and even “I just met grandpa”. Even more interesting, these lost people

thought that they were missing for only around five

minutes; while in fact, they were missing for at least days.

TEN GUIDELINES AWAY FROM TROUBLE Bali is an island where freedom of expression is appreciated. However, this doesn’t mean that everyone is allowed to act wild and out of control. Rules are still applied, although some of them are there to be broken. Some small violations are still acceptable while there are others that can’t be tolerated. We’ve listed ten guidelines that you might need to know to stay out of trouble.

1 It says forbidden, but it isn't 2 Confused? We’re talking about the forbidden signs in Bali’s many roads – especially those around Legian and Padma areas. For motorbikes, forbidden signs don’t mean a whole lot and one way is considered to be just for large vehicles. This would include the sidewalks too. Though aimed for pedestrians only, there has been a rapidly increasing number of motorbikes using the sidewalks as their alternative road; the best part (or not!) of this is that the practice is considered to be okay. So if you happen to ride one, you can always make your way everywhere you wish to go with your motorbike.

Don’t touch a child’s head

Balinese children wearing their traditional outfits are just cute. These children also for many times have been an interesting photo object. The thing is, these friendly children could be too cute that many tourists couldn’t help not to touch them. Touching as in shaking hands or patting on shoulders is normally allowed. However, touching the kids on their head is considered as an offense. This is because in Bali, and many other parts in Indonesia, head is seen as the most sacred part of a human’s body.

3 You buy them here, you leave them here We are talking about some souvenirs that you can always buy but can’t take home with you. Amongst these souvenirs are the beautifully carved bows with their arrows, corals and even the good quality yet pirated DVDs. You might 50

THE MAG The Ten

pass the custom in Ngurah Rai Airport, but we’re not sure if you could with the one at the airport in your home country. This is because these goods are illegal in some parts of the world.

4

No flash when taking picture of a priest

Huge, colorful ceremonies are one of the many appealing attractions in Bali. During these events, the Balinese Hindus would dress up to the nines in their own cool traditional ways. Beautiful sarongs and kebaya (women’s top) with its distinguished embroideries would flood the temples’ areas. However, of all these beautiful dresses, the one worn by the priest would be the fanciest; this makes the priest as a lot more interesting object for your camera. Then again, we need to remind you that the Hindu priests in Bali are the most respectable people. Therefore, when taking their picture, you can’t use the flash light. Close-up shots must also be done from a distant using your tele lens.

bargain when 5 Don’t not intended to buy Bargaining is part of a holiday experience in Bali. Having this ‘psychological war’ with the sellers at the traditional markets or the hawkers could be so much fun, especially if you win the bargain and can get the thing you want in a good price. Yet, we don’t advise you to bargain for something only for the fun of it. The sellers take your bargaining action as a serious purchase intention; therefore, they are willing to negotiate the price. There were cases when the sellers turned so hostile because the tourists only bargained for fun.

6

Temples know no tampons

7

Wear praying outfits, you’re immune on the road

In Bali, women in their menstruation period are considered ‘un-holy’. Therefore, when having their periods, women are not allowed to enter a temple, as the most holy and sacred place.

Different from other areas in Indonesia, Bali applies a different set of traffic rules. It is a common thing everywhere for motorbike riders (and the passengers, of course) to use helmets when on the road. However, in Bali, riders wearing their praying outfits are will not get any trouble from the police when not wearing their helmets. This rule applies not for the Hindu only, but also others like the Moslems.

8 Don’t steal the artifacts

This is really serious! Some artifacts sited in several tourist attractions are put there for everyone to enjoy. Unfortunately, irresponsible acts of stealing ancient remains in public places have been taking place several times. As an instance is the head of a Buddha statue in Goa Gajah (elephant cave).

9 Get drunk, don’t get stupid 10 Drinking the night away could be a great relief after an exhausting day full of fun. If you can control it, then it’s fine; but there are chances that you’d be carried away and drinking too much. Of course, drinking too much is fine; it’s the aggressive outcome that can’t be tolerated. We’ve seen enough fights (though not too many) and we don’t need to see more.

52

THE MAG The Ten

No vandalism, please

Have you ever been to the mangrove conservation on Bypass road leading to Sanur? If yes, then the place is a good example how vandalism is so not cool. There are scratches and many other totally unnecessary writings on the conservation’s wooden footpaths. Even on the tree trunks, we could see some couples’ names (both the tourists’ and locals’) expressing their sincere love for each other by ruining nature.

Go Green In Bali Bali is a beautiful island to visit and like many other tourist destinations, being such a popular spot brings many problems. One concerning problem that we at The Mag have come to notice is the ever growing environmental problems that effect this paradise island. We at The Mag hope that all travelers will take (little) time to read these points and take them to action, in order to lessen the damage. So please, keep Bali Beautiful.

1. Refill your water bottle

6. Eco-travelling

2. Please don’t litter

7. Lights out

Instead grabbing a new bottle of mineral water, why not keep that bottle and refill it. You can refill for free, in some places such as JP's Warung Club in Dhyana Pura.

It’s a habit we should all try to keep, and that is just “don’t litter”. If no trashcan is in sight, just keep it in your bag or pocket until you come across one, and then dispose of it correctly.

3. See some rubbish, pick it up

Add that little extra part in keeping Bali clean by picking scraps of trash ignorant people have discarded carelessly and then find the appropriate place to dispose of it.

4. Reuse or refuse plastic bags

Sometimes shops will still put your goods into plastic bags. It’s ok to refuse the plastic bags, if you’re carrying your own. You may get a strange look from the cashier, if so; just explain your trying to "Keep Bali Beautiful!”

5. Walk more!

To keep the air of Bali cleaner, it’s always better to walk. Other than being a healthy alternative, you may accidentally stumble onto a small store or unseen bar which you may have missed.

52

What's Happening

What better way to enjoy the beautiful scenery of nature in Bali than to take an eco-tourism tour. Many companies provide trips into the untouched wilderness of Bali, or the unspoiled coral reefs.

Leaving your AC on is a huge waste of valuable electrical energy. It’s better to turn off your AC and lights before heading out.

8. It’s better to go out for dinner

It is sometimes tempting to take-away food to enjoy in the comfort of the place you are staying, but the packaging of the food adds up to the pile of trash that is thrown away.

9. Support local industries

Sending imported goods uses up much of the worlds fossil fuel resources, compared to using products already available in Bali. By supporting local industries we can also improve the economy for the community in Bali.

10. Water preservation

The amount of clean water in Bali is slowly becoming scarcer due to over use. Small things we can do to help over come the water crisis are by taking shorter showers and turning of the taps when we brush our teeth.

BARGAINING IN BALI 1. No matter how much the vendors give as the opening price, you have to bargain for as much as half (or even less) of the price. 2. It is better for you to go to the shop that has everything: t-shirts, shorts, wood handicrafts, etc. By doing a onestop shopping, which means you will buy quite a lot, it is easier for you to get a bigger discount. 3. Try not to be not so apparent that you really want the thing you are looking at on a shop; the vendors are not stupid and can smell your desire, thus will take the advantage by putting the price high.

BEFORE ENTERING A TEMPLE, PLEASE REMIND YOURSELF: 1.To respect the place and its people: it is sacred, so do not make noise or damages and act normal. 2.That a woman who is having her period, is not allowed to enter the temple. 3. To not walk in front of a praying person.

4. Since there are ranges of shops offering pretty much the same things, you can always walk away from one shop to another if a deal cannot be reached. But walk slowly. Normally, if you offer a reasonable price on a bargain, in which the vendor can still make some profits and the price is good for you, the vendor would call you back to his/her shop as you walk away. 5. Tell the vendor that if he/she gives you a good price, than you will tell your other friends to shop from him/her. 6. Know the martket prices, or, pretend you do. By saying “I’ve seen this product before much cheaper” will probably lead to a cheaper price. 7. Have fun and stay friendly. Bargaining is part of the culture and it should be a fun activity.

4. That a priest is very important, so whenever he is praying, don’t sit higher then him and don’t bother him with your flash from your camera. 5. That you should also not take flashing pictures of other people praying. 6. To wear a sarong and a ribbon when you attend a ceremony (those are often provided to you when necessary).

Temples which is a long and hollow wave that works on the mid to high tide, The peak right in front of the warungs in line with the cave also best on high tide, Racetrack which is a super-fast with a barrel that works on the low tide, but gets seriously shallow, and Outside Corner which is considered by many to be one of the best waves anywhere in the world. The corner won't even start to break unless the swell is at least in the 8' range. L

Nyang Nyang

Nyang Nyang beach is known as one of the great spot to surf in Bali. Hiding from the crowd of people plus huge wave makes this beach like a secret paradise for every surfers. M

Padangbai

To get to this reef you have to drive into the town itself and then weave your way south, there are also a couple of other good waves in this area. So it pays to do a bit of exploring. Northern part of Nusa Dua is Sri Lanka, a bowly right which breaks into a deep water channel. Sanur Reef is a sheltered reef break that only works once in a while. November–April (wet season) provides optimum time of year for the waves. Padang Galak is a reliable rivermouth beach break north of Sanur. The surf break is quite popular here, but only works under certain conditions. The surfing crowd at Ketewel usually consists of locals and Japanese, including girls on body boards. Ketewel seemed like a place beginners/ intermediates might enjoy, not people looking for epic surfing. Padangbai has the flat bottomed mixed reef and sandy bottom with some walls.

Green Bali

Green Bali is situated at the bottom of a cliff. No worries going down but after you have been surfing for a couple of hours the return leg is a bit harder.

FACTS ABOUT BALI Bali is one of the tens of thousands islands in the Indonesian archipelago that lies between the country’s most populated island, Java, and Lombok. It is also one of the country’s most developed provinces with the capital in Denpasar, located on the southern part of the island. Bali is divided into 8 regencies (Badung, Bangli, Buleleng, Gianyar, Jembrana, Karangasem, Klungkung and Tabanan) and 1 city (Denpasar). Unlike most of the Muslim-majority Indonesia, around 94% out of Bali’s 3 million population adhere to Balinese Hinduism, which is a combination of the existing local beliefs and Hindu influences. As the main tourist destination in Indonesia, Bali is renowned for its highly developed arts, including music, dance, sculpture, painting, metalworking and leather. The island is also the home of wildlife such as hundreds of bird species (including the endangered Bali Starling), Indian Muntjac, Mouse-deer, Leopard Cat, Black Giant Squirrel, and several species of macaque and leaf monkey.

The island’s countless natural irresistible charms have awarded Bali as one of the world’s most visited holiday destination. With its tropical climate (temperatures averaging 31 degrees Celsius, 88 fahrenheit), Bali is warm all year round – which is perfect to explore its smoking volcanoes, stepped rice fields, remote beaches, towering cliffs, famous surf breaks and the majestic thousand- yearold temples. The hospitable and friendly natives of the Balinese and their way of life are by many considered as a magnet, inspiring those who have been in the island to go back again and those who have not to come.
