In fact, out of the many ways to enjoy your holiday in Bali is to spend a time on a coffee plantation. This is because coffee, just like wine and tobacco, has special charisma. The growing conditions in Bali are ideal for coffee trees, and small-scale production quickly spread in the cooler, higher altitude areas of the Island. The highland plateau of Kintamani, between the volcanoes of Batukaru and Agung, is the main coffee growing area in Bali. Many coffee farmers on…

TEAM'S NOTE

Hot, Hot, Hot… The current position of the sun, which is right above Bali, has made the temperature across the island exceptionally high. According to the meteorological agency, the temperature is forecasted to last up until around December, when rainy season hits the island. Hang in there folks, just hang by the pool or close to the sea and together with The Ten (see page...) you will be fine! Plus, you now have a great excuse to wear that large cool hat with huge sunglasses. For our little escape from the blazing sun, we went up to the highland of Kintamani to unwind in a cooler breeze. We squeezed our way on a narrow road in the area between the greeneries and refreshing fragrances of coffee. As the result, we have this issue’s Feature Story about delicious Balinese Coffee (see page 46). We also went crossing Badung Strait to the tranquil island of Nusa Lembongan to check out one of Bali’s most unique attractions called Gala Gala (see page 18). Luckily we didn't have to sleep in an underground house; nope, we were lucky enough to sleep at the Nusa Lembongan Beach Villas (see page 42). Another attraction we visited last month was Yeh Pulu, a series of ancient stone relief located in Pejeng. Literally means “carrier of holy spring”, Yeh Pulu has been a hot debate amongst archeologists (see page 30). Our other regular features are still here; therefore, enjoy reading! And enjoy Bali too!

Darn, Bali is hot!

You might find it a bit odd, knowing that not many people are really into sunbathing these days in Bali. No, the people don’t really change; it’s the weather that has been acting ‘ungently’. The current position of the sun, which is right above Bali, has made the temperature across the island exceptionally hot. Many tourists claimed that the heat at the beaches is unbearable and the sand becomes so hot that it is impossible to walk on bare feet. According to the meteorological agency, the temperature is forecasted to last up until around early December, when rainy season hits the island. Just hang in there and be cool with this, people.

Gala Gala: The Underground House

M

ade Byasa (Byasa/biasa means ordinary) is an extraordinary Balinese man who has created one of the most unique attractions in his home island, Nusa Lembongan. “Creating”, however, is not really the right word; this is because what Made did was “digging” an underground house. Fifteen years of digging finally paid off: Byasa had an ideal meditating place and Lembongan has become a more interesting getaway with this attraction. Using only simple tools such as hammer and chisel (and most importantly his instinct), Byasa started digging his own yard in 1961. In 1976, the 500 square meter of labyrinth was completed with a complex web of holes that consist of: a meditation room, bedroom, bathroom, dining room, living room and kitchen. Of course, don’t expect to comfortably sit on the living room’s cozy sofa or anything like that in Gala Gala’s 18

any other room during a visit there. There are some parts of this house where you need to bow when exploring them, unless you feel like hitting your head on the rock ceiling. Gala Gala’s seven entrance/exit doors are pretty steep and could be slippery at times. On the ground (the yard) of this unique place you can find art stalls selling a collection of local souvenirs such as shorts, sarongs and handicrafts. The son of Made Byasa, who manages the whole compound, is normally sitting near a small gazebo with a board explaining the history of Gala Gala. If not busy, he will give a tour to the underground house and tell you the whole story about it. Gala Gala is located down a small lane off the main road after the Nusa Ceningan suspension bridge (on the left side if you come from Jungutbatu/Mushroom directions). The small lane (wide enough for motorbike access) is the one with a small wooden signboard saying “Gala Gala Underground House”. A donation of IDR 20,000 per person needs to be made before entering the underground house.

THE MAG Heart of Bali : Yayasan Peduli Kemanusiaan

What is your organization and what does it do? Yayasan Peduli Kemanusiaan (YPK) Bali, also known as the Bali Humanity Care Foundation, was established in 2001 in Denpasar in response to the needs of physically disabled people in Bali. YPK dedicates itself to supporting the physically disabled community, with a particular focus on those who come from poor backgrounds and have no access to formal health services. By encouraging and motivating its patients to independently undertake their daily activities, YPK aims to decrease their dependency on others, help patients to recognize their importance within society, and in turn, increase their overall quality of life. YPK works through a number of rehabilitative approaches including physiotherapy, occupational therapy, informal education and skill development and motivational coaching.

What are your short-term and longterm goals? In the short-term, YPK aims to continue improving its services in the rehabilitation centre, build an education program for children and expand the evening physiotherapy clinic. We hope that in 2010 we can provide our services to over 200 physically disabled patients and source enough funding to establish a high quality education program for 30 children who have been refused entry by the public system due to their disability. YPK Bali’s long term goal is to expand its services to a wider scope of physically disabled people in remote and underprivileged areas; both through the current rehabilitation centre in Renon and via a mobile clinic. The fully equipped mobile rehabilitation clinic will provide therapy services to known ‘problem areas’ throughout Bali. It is expected that within 3 years of operation, the mobile clinic could provide its services to at least 500 disabled people. Has your organization made (or is making) any progress in achieving its goals? 2009 has seen YPK Bali make considerable progress towards achieving its goals. Since March this year, a seed education program for children has been offered once per week following therapy sessions. Additional funding will enable us to provide a more professional service to a larger number of children.

With regards to the mobile clinic, we plan to begin data collection before the end of 2009 to determine which areas in Bali need the most attention. We have recently received funding towards equipment for the mobile clinic which is a great start! Have your actions made any significant change in line with the goals and missions of your organization? While we believe we have made a significant difference to the lives of our patients, our achievement is only the “tip of the iceberg” when considering there are an estimated 11,600 people in Bali currently living with a physical disability. Of all these people, very few have received any medical care or have been given the opportunity to integrate into society. For this reason, YPK Bali hopes to attract increased support from donors and sponsors so that we can expand our services to the thousands of people who would otherwise be overlooked and neglected. magazine.barudibali.com Heart of Bali : Yayasan Peduli Kemanusiaan

My First Trip to Bali

Lawrence, UK

26

THE MAG My First Trip to Bali

He may be an ‘unusual’ man, but the highly-educated Lawrence probably knows (a lot) more about Bali than many of the Balinese themselves. His dramatic adventures (literally!) during his times in Indonesia – and many other parts of the world –have earned the world some of the most tremendous essays and a notable, Emmy award nominee TV series called “Ring of Fire”. Some serious talks with heavy, scientific terms were making our little yet educating chit-chat – luckily we managed to have him gone with some lighter words. So, on a lighter note, here’s what Dr Lawrence Blair has to say about Bali…

When was your first trip to Bali and why? I’ve been living in Bali for 35 years now; you do the math. However, my first visit to Indonesia was back in 1965. I was delegated to attend this conference about meditation technique. Yep, I had a meditation guru from Java. What made you decide to move here? Oh, it’s the life. Living in Bali is fun and easy. I mean, I live part time between Double Six area and Ubud and I really can’t complain. Take example of this place (Double Six); I could always go for a massage and boogie-boarding only within walking distance. I have to keep my body going, you know, even though I am old. I even love the geckos and snakes that live around my house in Ubud. What was your best memory during the trip? The exotic, tropical animals; even the Bali dogs fascinated me. I wasn’t just a regular tourist when I first came here; I was in search for the amazing, cultures,

tribes and the wilds. Bali, and Indonesia in general, gave me all that. I dived with the whales, visited some of the most remote tribesmen and studied animals that can’t be found in other parts of the world. Of course, that’s not all. I taught Mick Jagger and his then wife (Jerry Hall) how to boogie board in Sanur in 1992. Oh, I also took David Bowie and his wife touring the keraton (palace) in Solo, Central Java. What is the biggest change since your trip back then? The physical changes are certainly very noticeable. Aside from that, the people have also changed now. I can’t really describe it. What was the best hangout place back then? I am basically a lazy walker, so the beach is always the best hangout place for me. But sometimes I had breakfast at Ku De Ta; you know, only to get in touch with the British community here. magazine.barudibali.com My First Trip to Bali

ited near Pejeng, an area known for its ancient stone relief remaining, the small compound of Yeh Pulu with its stone-face relief is one Bali’s unique treasures. Yeh Pulu’s surrounding that offers pristine scenery makes a visit to this one of the oldest depictions on the island even more pleasant. Literally means “carrier of holy spring”, Yeh Pulu has been a hot debate amongst archeologists. The carved figures of a man carrying something on his shoulder, a dwarf person wearing a turban and a woman holding the tail of a horse have caused experts quite a headache. Other carvings showing hunters attacking the prey and a man sitting on horse are also puzzling. This is because not even one Balinese folktale could explain what the carvings actually mean. 30

THE MAG Yeh Pulu

However, the presence of a small statue of Ganesh at the end of all the carvings provides a religious significance about Hinduism on the island. Another religious aspect in the area is shown by the presence of an old Balinese couple who will insist on sprinkling you with holy water. The two will mostly smile at you while saying things that apparently not many people could understand. Of course, a ‘tribute’ to Ganesh in the form of donation is expected (IDR 10,000 is way more than enough). Access to the relief is down a well-paved concrete path through some rice fields (entrance fee is IDR 6,000). Yeh Pulu is located one kilometer after Goa Gajah (if you come from Ubud direction).

BUGILS BALI

32

THE MAG Food Review: Bugils Bali

f you speak Bahasa Indonesia, hearing the name Bugils for a bar will probably make you laugh. For the non-speakers; 'bugil' means naked - as in 'no clothes on'. For your information; the name is actually a contraction of BUle GILa, meaning "crazy white person". Naked or crazy white person, the name is already quite promising - this must be a fun place to hang out. Bugils is indeed a fun and friendly cheers-type bar with rock n roll ambiance and it is certainly a perfect place to wet your whistles. Next to the extensive choice of beverages, Bugils also provides customers something to chew. Of course, as a Dutchowned venue, classic Dutch dishes dominate the menu. And the Dutch understand the good life; having a beer in the company of bitterballen and frikandel (the most eaten hot dog in Holland) is just a perfect combination.

To add a more European color, a number of Spanish dishes – including tapas – have been included to the menu. Grilled Pinchito of Chorizo (a Spanish grilled skewer of chorizo, potatoes, paprika and onions) and Tosto of Smoked Salmon and Prawn Sauce (two slices of toasted brown bread topped with prawn sauce, smoked salmon and capers) are great; and they won’t burn a hole on your wallet. Originating from a Friesland farm in the Netherlands, Bartele moved to Jakarta in the 90s and had ever since been working on any possible field that you can think of: interior contractor, TV actor, cocoa quality controller, office equipment distributor, etc. The headaches caused by these jobs made him decided to open a bar, where he can channel his big passion for beer, women and rock n roll.

All the thirsty and hungry locals, expatriates and tourists are welcome to experience the delight of the ice-cold beer and tapas available in the house. Bugils’ U-shaped bar, where customers can mingle and chat about the more important things in life (e.g. good looking female bartenders), is certainly the place to drink the night away.

Besek

Besek is a bamboo woven basket/ box produced everywhere in Bali. Certain typical, colorful Balinese motives are usually painted on the sides. The main purposes of besek are both religious and cultural. In temples, besek is used as a donation basket (for the maintenance of village temples and even cemeteries). For religious purposes, besek is used to place banten (offering). This kind of besek is called keben. The Balinese women normally put besek on top or their heads or on the palms of their hands. If it is filled with offerings, it’s strictly forbidden for these women to drop the besek. However, if it is only filled with non-religious goods, then the women can be ‘less careful’. Nowadays, besek is also largely used as an ornamental object such as souvenir packaging. 34

KETUMBAR

THE MAG Food Review: Ketumbar

ust a bit off the constantly-busy Melasti Street in Kuta is a restaurant with a lovely atmosphere called Ketumbar. The mood is set to provide the right ambience surrounded by friendly staff. Experiencing the al fresco dining in Ketumbar is also interesting, especially if you enjoy watching the busyness of Melasti. Dining inside will somewhat transport you to another area. This is due to the spacious setting that reflects an opposition from the crowded street outside. You can also choose to sit upstairs for a nice breeze.

Sampling a few of the delicacies offered on the menu, we started the meal with an appetizer called Ketumbar Chef Parade (golden fried king prawns, roasted beef salad in Asian style and crispy wonton with chicken and vegetables). The parade seemed to have flown our photographer away to heaven of delicious things. As a person who doesn’t really enjoy light meals, he really surprised me with that amazed look as he had the first bite of the crispy wonton. As I guessed it, he finished the whole plate in a heartbeat. Our cocktail was another thing that made our time in Ketumbar. The Fantastic Passion (vodka, triple sec, midori, blue curacao, passion fruit and pineapple juice) didn’t only look exotic and appealing, but also tasted astonishingly refreshing. However, of all that we had that

night, Linguine Al Nero di Seppia (home-made linguine with squid ink, seafood, fresh basil and tomato sauce) was the champion. I’ve never had or seen (let alone thought) black linguine before, but I've heard that it is a real delicacy for the Italian. It was certainly unique and tasty. Anyway, getting caught in traffic every time we hit the area has made us take out Melasti from our dining spot. However, now that Ketumbar has given us another idea about Melasti, we’d be going to this place more often for sure.

BELIEVE IT OR NOT

Where are you, baby? Having children is a huge deal for Balinese society, especially

since activities such as a village ceremony involves every household within the community unit. Therefore, it’s a

common practice in Bali for couples to marry after the women finally get pregnant – to assure family continuance. Yet, little

do we know that marriage in Bali doesn’t only act to legitimate the union of a couple, but also to unveil something that was previously invisible. Confused? Read on.

This story was inspired after seeing a Balinese woman next

door, near our office. We see her almost everyday; but there was this particular day when we literally dropped our jaws

looking at her. We knew that she had a boyfriend, but they

weren’t married. Anyway, on that particular day, she showed

up with her belly bulging out as if she was at least four-month

pregnant. And she was pregnant! The thing is, two days before

that day, her tummy was as flat as a new Sony Bravia. Her daily tight uniform couldn’t possibly hide it.

It turned out that she just got married with her boyfriend;

and that she was already pregnant for a couple of months. Yes, it is said that unmarried, pregnant Balinese woman will never

show any physical change. Even if they are already pregnant for eight months, these women will look like they’re not pregnant. However, once they are married and receive blessings from the priest, their tummies will show their true selves.

As we crosschecked the story, it also came out that a quite

few of other Balinese people (mostly men who got married after the girlfriends were pregnant) around our office were

experiencing the same thing. Of course, it’d be risky if you want to put this story to a test. Still, if you insist to prove it, then here’s our disclaimer: leave us out of it!

TEN THINGS ABOUT TANNING, SUNBURN AND HOT, HOT BALI Going for a holiday is fun, but getting sunburns or over-heated isn’t. It’ll be such a waste to just stay in your hotel/villa during your vacation in the currently super hot Bali. Don’t worry, we have listed ten ways for you to still be able to have fun without getting sunburns. Here goes…

1 You can still enjoy the sun 2 Wear protective clothing The best time of day to catch some sun is between 8am and 10am. At this time of day the sun is not quite as strong as it is from lunchtime on. Choosing the early morning to be out in the sun is one way to avoid over-heated and sundamaged skin.

3

Apply the suitable sunscreen

Don’t forget to wear your sunscreen even if you are just walking down the streets of Kuta or Seminyak. Choose a natural sunscreen lotion (preferably with an SPF of 15 or more that contain both UVA and UVB) so you do not apply potentially dangerous chemicals to your skin.

50

Wear a hat and cool, protective clothing when going outdoors. White clothes are best because white reflects light and this helps to keep you cooler. Wear clothes made from natural materials such as cotton, to allow good airflow between your clothing and your skin. This will help the skin to evaporate perspiration and keep you cooler.

THE MAG The Ten

Apply the sunscreen 15-30 minutes before going outside and reapply every 2 hours (more often when sunbathing, swimming or surfing). Since it's hard to put sunscreen around your eyes, wear large sunglasses for a physical barrier.

4

Drink plenty of water

Make sure you stay well hydrated by drinking plenty of water in an extreme climate like Bali has currently. This helps to keep your body and your skin hydrated. Three liters a day is considered an average for adults. Heat stress, sunstroke and dehydration can creep up on you with very unpleasant results. Don’t forget, the kids also need to stay hydrated as well.

5 Cover your backs Don't forget to protect the hard-to-reach places, such as the backs of your knees, back of your neck, elbows and back of your ears (if you have short hair). Feet should also be included if you are wearing sandals, flip-flops or going bare-foot. Even these places can hurt a lot with sunburn.

magazine.barudibali.com The Ten

51

6

You can still get a tan

7

Pay attention to your children

Don't lie in the sun purposefully seeking a tan. This is not only damaging to your skin but will definitely burn you the first few times you try it at the beginning. If you want to tan, do it gradually and sensibly, with short exposure. And you know what, you can even get a tan in the shade; rays of light will reflect on surrounding things, leaving you with a darker skin. Keep in mind that you still need to apply sunscreen in the shade!

The most harmful effects of sun exposure occur during early childhood. Keep babies under 1 year out of direct sunlight. Once infants turn 6 months of age, begin using a sunscreen for added protection.

8

Keep exhausting activities to a minimum during the day

If you’re exercising do this at the coolest times of the day; again, early morning is the best or late afternoon before sunset. It is not a good idea to exercise strenuously in full sun either, as this can cause over heating.

9 Empty stomach is a bad idea If you have outdoor activities planned during the day, don’t go out with an empty stomach. Although many tour operators provide snacks and lunch, you should at least have a salad or fruit platter before you leave your hotel/villa. Heat from the sun plus an empty stomach can easily commence headache which, if keeps on going, can cause you to faint.

52

THE MAG The Ten

10

Okay, so you’re not listening

In case you get too carried away and forgetting to protect yourself, here are some steps you should do as soon as you get back in your hotel/villa: • Have a tepid bath or shower (not too cold, it will cause a headache). • Place a wet, cold flannel or towel on your head and neck. • Another good way to cool down is to put your feet in an ice cold basin. • Have frequent sips of cool water. • Rest. • Loosen any tight clothing. • Apply a soothing moisturizer to your skin. Should any of these steps doesn’t work out, you must consult the nearest medical experts.

Go Green In Bali Bali is a beautiful island to visit and like many other tourist destinations, being such a popular spot brings many problems. One concerning problem that we at The Mag have come to notice is the ever growing environmental problems that effect this paradise island. We at The Mag hope that all travelers will take (little) time to read these points and take them to action, in order to lessen the damage. So please, keep Bali Beautiful.

1. Refill your water bottle

6. Eco-travelling

2. Please don’t litter

7. Lights out

Instead grabbing a new bottle of mineral water, why not keep that bottle and refill it. You can refill for free, in some places such as JP's Warung Club in Dhyana Pura.

It’s a habit we should all try to keep, and that is just “don’t litter”. If no trashcan is in sight, just keep it in your bag or pocket until you come across one, and then dispose of it correctly.

3. See some rubbish, pick it up

Add that little extra part in keeping Bali clean by picking scraps of trash ignorant people have discarded carelessly and then find the appropriate place to dispose of it.

4. Reuse or refuse plastic bags

Sometimes shops will still put your goods into plastic bags. It’s ok to refuse the plastic bags, if you’re carrying your own. You may get a strange look from the cashier, if so; just explain your trying to "Keep Bali Beautiful!”

5. Walk more!

To keep the air of Bali cleaner, it’s always better to walk. Other than being a healthy alternative, you may accidentally stumble onto a small store or unseen bar which you may have missed.

52

What's Happening

What better way to enjoy the beautiful scenery of nature in Bali than to take an eco-tourism tour. Many companies provide trips into the untouched wilderness of Bali, or the unspoiled coral reefs.

Leaving your AC on is a huge waste of valuable electrical energy. It’s better to turn off your AC and lights before heading out.

8. It’s better to go out for dinner

It is sometimes tempting to take-away food to enjoy in the comfort of the place you are staying, but the packaging of the food adds up to the pile of trash that is thrown away.

9. Support local industries

Sending imported goods uses up much of the worlds fossil fuel resources, compared to using products already available in Bali. By supporting local industries we can also improve the economy for the community in Bali.

10. Water preservation

The amount of clean water in Bali is slowly becoming scarcer due to over use. Small things we can do to help over come the water crisis are by taking shorter showers and turning of the taps when we brush our teeth.

BARGAINING IN BALI 1. No matter how much the vendors give as the opening price, you have to bargain for as much as half (or even less) of the price. 2. It is better for you to go to the shop that has everything: t-shirts, shorts, wood handicrafts, etc. By doing a onestop shopping, which means you will buy quite a lot, it is easier for you to get a bigger discount. 3. Try not to be not so apparent that you really want the thing you are looking at on a shop; the vendors are not stupid and can smell your desire, thus will take the advantage by putting the price high.

4. Since there are ranges of shops offering pretty much the same things, you can always walk away from one shop to another if a deal cannot be reached. But walk slowly. Normally, if you offer a reasonable price on a bargain, in which the vendor can still make some profits and the price is good for you, the vendor would call you back to his/her shop as you walk away. 5. Tell the vendor that if he/she gives you a good price, than you will tell your other friends to shop from him/her. 6. Know the martket prices, or, pretend you do. By saying “I’ve seen this product before much cheaper” will probably lead to a cheaper price. 7. Have fun and stay friendly. Bargaining is part of the culture and it should be a fun activity.

4. That a priest is very important, so whenever he is praying, don’t sit higher then him and don’t bother him with your flash from your camera. 5. That you should also not take flashing pictures of other people praying. 6. To wear a sarong and a ribbon when you attend a ceremony (those are often provided to you when necessary).

Northern part of Nusa Dua is Sri Lanka, a bowly right which breaks into a deep water channel. Sanur Reef is a sheltered reef break that only works once in a while. November–April (wet season) provides optimum time of year for the waves. Padang Galak is a reliable rivermouth beach break north of Sanur. The surf break is quite popular here, but only works under certain conditions. The surfing crowd at Ketewel usually consists of locals and Japanese, including girls on body boards. Ketewel seemed like a place beginners/ intermediates might enjoy, not people looking for epic surfing. Padangbai has the flat bottomed mixed reef and sandy bottom with some walls.

Bali is divided into 8 regencies (Badung, Bangli, Buleleng, Gianyar, Jembrana, Karangasem, Klungkung and Tabanan) and 1 city (Denpasar). Unlike most of the Muslim-majority Indonesia, around 94% out of Bali’s 3 million population adhere to Balinese Hinduism, which is a combination of the existing local beliefs and Hindu influences. As the main tourist destination in Indonesia, Bali is renowned for its highly developed arts, including music, dance, sculpture, painting, metalworking and leather. The island is also the home of wildlife such as hundreds of bird species (including the endangered Bali Starling), Indian Muntjac, Mouse-deer, Leopard Cat, Black Giant Squirrel, and several species of macaque and leaf monkey.

The island’s countless natural irresistible charms have awarded Bali as one of the world’s most visited holiday destination. With its tropical climate (temperatures averaging 31 degrees Celsius, 88 fahrenheit), Bali is warm all year round – which is perfect to explore its smoking volcanoes, stepped rice fields, remote beaches, towering cliffs, famous surf breaks and the majestic thousand- yearold temples. The hospitable and friendly natives of the Balinese and their way of life are by many considered as a magnet, inspiring those who have been in the island to go back again and those who have not to come.

Medewi is a perfect fun wave for all surfers. Come early to avoid onshore winds. The swell is generally smaller than at Kuta spots.
