TEAM'S NOTE

Let's Sway… It's May! It’s funny how time seems to fly twice as fast in Bali: weekdays turn quickly to weekends and, yet again, the high season is drawing near. While rain occasionally pours down the island, we could see that the sun is taking a larger part and has brightened up the wet, cloudy days during rainy season. “Bright” also appears just right to forecast Bali’s tourism in the future, especially since Governor Made Mangku Pastika has taken several actions to preserve many natural resources and enhance modern infrastructures without excluding the rich Balinese traditional values. This is good news, for tourists and residents alike should feel a lot more comfortable with all the positive changes. Yet, a coin is always two-sided. We could only keep our fingers crossed that the changes would not eventually eliminate the real beauty of Bali or simply turn it available only for private eyes to see. Therefore, while they still last and available for public, we would like to remind you of several rewarding views and attractions that for many times are missed out due to their ‘unpopularity’. See these spots in this issue’s The Ten (page 14). Searching for some hidden beauties Bali still holds led us to western-most tip of the island, from where we could clearly see the island of Java just across the strait. We couldn’t resist the temptation. It was a guilty pleasure for us, for this month’s Bali Road Trip was involving a bit of a boat trip to Java (page 20). Of course, trying out restaurants and other establishments has always been an ever fun activity for us to experience. Thus, it is a pleasure for us to serve you some of the fingerlicking delicacies of Gusto (page 44) and Ma Joly (page 38) in this issue’s Food Review. As an escape from our daily routines, we hit the street of Dhyana Pura and checked in at Villa Tresna (part of Villa Bugis) where we rested our minds within an undisturbed privacy of serene paradise for our Sleep Over section (page 40). Happy reading!

BALI FLASH

New Pet Ownership Laws Proposed in Bali Bali’s government is currently drafting and discussing some new points regarding pet ownership on the island. The new laws are expected to help control rabies through implementations of rules and procedures. The points that are being discussed are as follow: • Any dog, cat or pet monkey running loose on public streets is subject to capture and detention. • Pet owners will be able to claim their pets back after paying the cost of warding their pet in a detention center. • Pets not claimed can be offered for adoption, but may be euthanized if new homes cannot be found. • Pet owners will be required to register their pets with local animal control authorities. • Pet shops and pet dealers must be officially licensed. • Owners will be required to keep their pets under control and provide preventative inoculations.

Ngurah Rai Airport Advances In order to prevent the spreading of Singapore flu in Bali, thermal scanners have been installed in Ngurah Rai International Airport. The scanners would also function for a greater good in avoiding any other diseases such as Swine Flu and SARS to enter the island. The scanners would automatically detect the body temperature of every passenger passing through the arrival gates. If their temperature is above average, the alarm will be activated and the passenger’s face will appear red on the screen.

Bali’s Rivers Run Dry An estimated 260 out of Bali’s 400 streams and rivers are completely drying up. That means, Bali has only 140 rivers that are currently maintaining the year-round water flows. Yet, these remaining rivers are also predicted to face drought, especially due to the continuous destructions of the island’s forest cover. Forest conservation efforts are currently being conducted to overcome this issue.

Bali’s 1st Pink Ribbon Walk

The exclusive complex of BTDC in Nusa Dua was a sea of pink on the 8th of May 2009, as BIWA and BTDC held the first ever “Bali Pink Ribbon Walk for Breast Cancer Awareness”. The event was to build awareness towards the ever growing problem of Breast Cancer amongst women in Bali and also the world. All proceeds raised in this event will go towards buying four mammograms for the area of Bali. T o commemorate this first ever event in Bali, all participants formed a huge pink ribbon, which is the symbol for breast cancer awareness and to also remember those who have lost the fight against breast cancer. 16

BALI ROAD TRIP It was a guilty pleasure for us to leave our beloved Bali to see what is on the neighboring eastern-most Java. The journey for sure enriches our experience and knowledge about Indonesia.

CROSSING BALI STRAIT

GILIMANUK

Ketapang Ferry Port 20

THE MAG Gilimanuk: Crossing Bali Strait

W

e were pretty intrigued when visiting the so-called head of Bali on one of our last year’s road trips. Heading to the island’s northwestern tip on that time provided us the glimpse of not only a different sight of Bali, but also the neighboring Java. Staring at the island of Java that stretched so close before our eyes was so inviting that this time we decided to pay Java’s most eastern part a visit. There we were again, for the second time, squeezing our car in between the big trucks and buses traveling from Bali to Java on the two-way winding road leading western to the tip of Bali. And just like before, our car couldn’t really run as the slanted ways caused a little hard time for, especially, the fully-loaded trucks ahead of us to go on. A lot of road constructions were also taking place. We didn’t mind to queue behind these big machineries, for we had a scenic drive along the way to enjoy. The road turned flat and straighter as we got out of Jembrana, a western regency of Bali, and went into the zone of West Bali National Park. The wild animals within the zone area should feel comfortable and at ease these days, provided that the past rainy season supplied them the water they need. Anyway, it only took awhile from the national park before we finally arrived at the ferry port in Gilimanuk.

After some 40 minutes we moored at Ketapang Ferry Port in Banyuwangi, the eastern-most regency of East Java. Getting out of the port, we were offered a pretty much similar view as we came near the Gilimanuk Ferry Port in Bali. One thing that made it different was the absence of Hindu temples. Instead, domes of many mosques were decorating the area of this province. Just like most of the areas in Indonesia, the majority of Banyuwangi residents adhere Islam as their religion.

Gilimanuk Ferry Port The traffic in the port didn’t seem busy that day; and it was good, because we were not really in the mood for crushing in between crowds. Most of the trucks and buses we encountered along the way were using different ferries – only a couple shared a ferry with us. Anyway, there were only eight tourists on board (oh yeah, we counted!) while the rest of the passengers were residents of the two neighboring islands who regularly transport goods from Bali to Java and vice versa. One of the passengers told us that there are normally children swimming on sides of the ferry, before it sails. These children would swim catching the coins thrown by passengers into the sea. Too bad, none of the children could be spotted that day; it should be an interesting sight to see. Nonetheless, it took around 40 minutes crossing the 2.4 km Bali Strait to Java. Looking back to Bali from the ferry, we were very surprised to see a long-stretched of a white-sandy beach located right in the tip of Bali. Luckily the beach is within the zone of West Bali National Park – no investor can touch it. I personally couldn’t help but kept on staring at the beach for quite some time with my binoculars.

Yet, when we hit the center of the regency (the town), the make-up started to change especially with the many pedicabs (locally known as becak) around. Although there were many other public transportations like mini buses (bemo in Bali), pedicabs seemed to be the most popular one. This mode of transport was literally everywhere to find (in the markets, schools, in front of government offices) even in the quiet outskirt areas.

BALI ROAD TRIP We asked a number of locals on what do they think as the best attraction spot in the area. Some of them came up with several similar names of places; these places turned out to be public swimming pools and a karaoke lounge; for us, all the answers were such disappointments. So we decided to just stroll down the roads heading to places that we hadn’t even heard before. Enjoying the surroundings of a ‘strange’ land could also be an exciting experience – even the town in Banyuwangi wasn’t really that busy when we visited on a Monday afternoon. Just like in Bali, the villages in Banyuwangi are mostly comprised of rice fields. Due to its close proximity with Madura (an island also belongs to East Java) and Bali, Banyuwangi shares the same ‘history’ in the past with the two islands. Thus making this area rich in culture, traditions and natures. This area also won the Adipura (cleanest area award) for medium-sized city in 1997.

Adipura Monument

There is one popular beach called Boom Beach where the local residents use as their weekend retreat. If compared with the ones in Bali, Boom Beach is honestly nothing to shout about. It’s not the kind of beach adequate for one to have a swim or sunbathe. There are, however, several beachside restaurants from bamboo huts where people can relax and enjoy their seafood meals. The beach is also very closely connected with a fisherman port; therefore, a nice spot to observe the fishermen doing their activities. You might need to cope with fishy smell, though. Overall, Banyuwangi is worth a one-night visit. Seeing different things the area has to offer would for sure enrich your experience about Indonesia. After that, of course, you need to get back to our beloved paradise island of Bali. THE MAG

Clean Bali Series What is your organization and what does it do? Clean Bali Series is an environmental education organization. We are a not for profit organization that has and continues to publish a series of hard back, full color illustration, children’s environmental books in three languages (Bahasa Indonesia, Balinese and English). The books focus on the pollution problems of the different areas of the island of Bali (beach, rice fields and mountains) and of Indonesia as a whole. The books are distributed free of charge to schools, educational programs and environmental organizations. Heart of Bali

28

THE MAG Heart of Bali : Clean Bali Series

What is the purpose of the “Clean Bali Series”? Our purpose is to bring attention to the pollution problems here in Bali and Indonesia and also the world. Provide information, basic education and an understanding of these pollution problems and their causes, as well as possible solutions to them. To prepare this generation and future generations through our efforts, to be better prepared for and be able to make educated and informed decisions when dealing with present and future pollution issues.

“We have only one earth and only one chance to make right the wrongs we have committed, so let's not blow it, shall we” -MJRWhat are your short term goals? Our short term goals are to continue publishing and distributing the two books that we have published ("Penyu and Lumba-lumba" / “Turtle and Dolphin” and "Burung Camar dan Kokokan" / “Seagull and Heron") as well as finish the third book in the series (due to be finished in April of 2010). We are also in the finishing stages of printing a two language paper back teacher’s guide with information and lesson plans to accompany the three books in the series. We are in the process of recording and publishing the environmental songs found in our books. We hope to be able to distribute and use this medium to express our message and concerns about the pollution problems here in Indonesia and the world. What are your long term goals? We would like to expand our environmental children’s book series and programs to the other islands of Indonesia. Our other series of books (e.g. ”Clean Java Series”) would follow the same format as the Clean Bali Series and discuss pollution problems and solutions specific to those islands . We would continue to utilize the individual languages and traditions of the different islands to help enhance the learning process and to maintain individual cultural identities. Has your organization made or is it making any progress in achieving it’s goals? Yes! Here are a few examples (our website www. cleanbaliseries.org has a full list of activities):

- Clean Bali Series has distributed over 3,000 copies of the first and second books for free to various schools and organizations located throughout Indonesia. - Clean Bali Series has sold an additional 1,000 copies of the first book with the proceeds from sales funding about 30% of the printing costs of the second book. - We are working with and supporting the Yayasan GUS of Kuta, Bali in the distribution and use of our books in their environmental education programs in Bali. Have your actions made any significant changes in line with the goals and missions of your organization? Yes! In that our actions have only strengthened our resolve and commitment to follow through with the goals that we originally started with and to further expand our programs in several new directions. The response to our books has only further proven that people on a whole are concerned with the environmental problems we are all facing now and willing to become involved in finding solutions to them.

My First Trip to Bali

Marc, France

32

THE MAG My First Trip to Bali

Marc at Kudeta (2003)

Starting his career abroad as a chef in Hong Kong in 1988, Marc eventually grew tired of the hectic world of the Hong Kong kitchen and seeks his fortune in Singapore in 2000. Realizing the Singapore scene was not much different from that of Hong Kong, Marc decided to accept a business preposition from a close friend to move to Bali. So in February 2002, Marc arrived in Bali to start (back then) a tapas bar but now is the General Manager of Bali Deli, a very successful Deli for expats in Bali.

Why did you go to Bali in 2002? I had never been to Bali before, but decided to accept an offer from my friend to help him start a business here. Another reason why I decided to move to Bali is because I was tired of working in a big city as a chef and wanted to try my hand at something different. What is the best memory about that trip? I remember back then Kudeta was empty, only around 2025 people would hang-out there, it wasn’t as crowded like it is now. I would go there to enjoy the beautiful sunset views and the cocktails. I swear I saw some whales when I was enjoying the sunset view there, but I don’t know if they were real or the cocktail got the better of me. What was the best hang-out place back then? I liked to hang-out at Kudeta. I would always party there with my friends enjoying cocktails. There was also Café Warisan in Kerobokan which was a good place to eat and hang-out back then. The reason why I chose these places was because there wasn’t that many places to choose from back then.

Is there anything you miss about the old Bali? I truly miss the space Bali used to have. As you can see now, there are so many shops on the sides of the road and cars parked outside them making the already small streets of Bali jammed. Another thing I’ve seen change are the attitudes of people in Bali have grown more aggressive, especially on the roads. People are just not as patient on the road as they used to be.

What is the biggest change since your trip back then? To me, it would be the development in Bali. There are so many villas in Bali now and also many restaurants. I remember when the eat street was still empty; there was only one restaurant around. Things started to grow about 3 years ago, not long after the second Bali Bomb. Development is good for the island, but things have gotten too crowded now.

What made you decide to move here? Other than the offer from my friend to work in Bali with him, like I said before, I grew tired of city life. Things were just too hectic for me, especially working the long hours as a chef, I felt like I didn’t have a life anymore. I just needed a break from that all, and heard that Bali was a laid back and easy place to live. Other than that, Bali has been good to me since I’ve lived here. I couldn’t think of a better place to live.

In Memory of 1972 Air Crash Incident

B

ali’s tourism received a great shock not very long after the island opened its door for the world in 1972, when a Pan American Airways airplane crashed in Singaraja. A monument to honor this tragedy, which was said to be a result of miscommunication between the aircraft and the then recentlyopened Ngurah Rai Airport, was erected and is still standing on Padang Galak Beach up until today. The crash itself took the lives of 107 people on board (all passengers and air crews). Yet, as sad as the tragedy, this monument is somewhat neglected—let alone the hidden location that makes it hard to find. Although a little tribute seems to be paid (you can still see some offerings laid there), it’s peculiar to learn how most of the residents there are not aware of the existence of this monument. Even those in the know are still not aware of what the monument is all about. When we explained about the monument to some of the men, who were fishing at a nearby river at that time, they were surprised to learn that such an incident ever occurred in Bali. While the monument’s surrounding is quite pristine, it’s strange that the area doesn’t get the attention it deserves. It would help, actually, if the bushes are flattened out and the road is made better to turn this place into a memorial park. Aside from making an easy access, especially for families of the victims to visit, such a park would give contribution and bring ‘lights’ for Padang Galak— an area known as a dark corner for prostitution. Once you are in Padang Galak Beach facing the ocean, you take the dirt track to the left till it ends. The monument is located some 50 meters on your left, a bit blocked by the bushes. 36

Beginning this May, a live musical performance is presented every Friday & Saturday after the sun has set. The romantic sounds of an acoustic guitar accompanied by the saxophone build towards a truly romantic ambience.

Ma Joly went through major renovations from March until June last year, because of a devastating wave that hit and destroyed much of the beachfront. Now, a safer distance from the sea shore, Ma Joly still has a splendid view of the wide beach and passerbys are welcome to enter via the beach front. To make the viewing of the sunset more relaxing, large sofas are set near the beach entrance, but these seats are a rush to get for many guests come to lounge here and enjoy cocktails as they await the sun to set. The Ma Joly bar has a wide variety of liqueurs, cocktails (typical and wine based), mock tails and special Ma Joly mixes (alcoholic and non-alcoholic). Dining takes place alfresco on an open terrace or under the shelter of a traditional Balinese roof set within a stylish décor, or guests may choose to feast within a graceful pavilion supported by stone pillars with a clear view of the white-sandy beach. With an exquisite selection to choose from the menu, we got confused what meals to choose, but were pleased that the staff were helpful to aid us in our selection. To begin our meal, we had the following starters; Roasted bell pepper & young goat cheese (aubergine – capers – artichoke – shallot vinaigrette), Crab & soy jelly (beet root – granny smith – avocado – crab mayonnaise – herb salad), Slow cooked Tasmanian salmon (mustard & dill – poached egg – potato mousseline – ‘croque monsieur’ – smoked salmon & parmesan cheese) and Rabbit & langoustine

(fennel – white beer – dried cherry tomato – walnuts). All appetizers were a pleasure to the pallet, preparing us for the main course to come. All meals were presented beautifully upon large dishes, which made ours mouths water in anticipation. The dishes we ordered were; Roasted duck breast (duck jus – honey – coffee – cashew nuts – ‘sweet & sour’ – bitterbal ), Braised filet of veal (caramelized shallot sauce – creamy sweet corn – root vegetables) , Milk fed lamb (neutral jus – caramelized fennel – garlic confit – potato & vanilla mousseline). All meals were cooked to delicious perfection, equivalent to the presentation of the meals. Enjoying a meal in Ma Joly is truly an elegant experience, but you don’t have to go all fancy dressed when you eat here. But it wouldn’t hurt to dress up a little, to blend with the glamorous taste that Ma Joly has to offer.

THE MAG Villa Bugis

Entering through the door, the sound of trickling water from small waterfalls greets you, releasing all feelings of tension. The plunge pool is equipped with a small Jacuzzi with adjustable water temperature, making a splash in the pool more pleasurable in the hot Bali sun. A sunbathing area with four long chairs are seated on the poolside, an appropriate spot to catch some rays. A cozy little laze-gazebo lined with cushions, is situated in the garden, amongst the shady trees, for when the sun just gets to hot to sunbathe.

Villa Tresna has one main bedroom on the second floor with its own lounge area before entering the room. The room has its own flat screen LCD TV and DVD player and on the ground floor were three smaller rooms surrounding the pool; one room with a queen sized bed and the other rooms has two single beds. All rooms are air-conditioned. Each room has its own bathroom with a semiopened roof giving the sense of openness, being able to see the blue sky above as you bathe in the stone bathtub or shower under the rainfall shower head. The bathroom is set as a bamboo garden, surrounding the bathtub, with stone tile flooring and walls, expanding that natural ambience. magazine.barudibali.com Villa Bugis

GUSTO TAPAS BAR

O

riginally, tapas (you know, those small Spanish savory dishes) were consumed by Spanish workers together with an alcoholic beverage, before heading home to have some real dinner. But today, tapas have evolved into an entire cuisine, which is what Gusto has delivered to the famous eat street of Seminyak. Long gone are the ‘standing’ tapas bar. In Gusto you can lounge in comfort, enjoying drinks and of course tapas, while chatting about the days activities.

conversation with friends, which is the main idea of a tapas bar. As you enter Gusto, there are two large lounging areas with two long dark wooden tables in each, which is an appropriate place to hang out with a large group of friends. In the center of Gusto a prominent bar is situated with many fine liqueurs, ready to wet your whistle. Surrounding the bar are a small set of wooden tables for guests to dine in comfort and pass the night with light discussions.

The design of Gusto is modernistic, far from the typical tapas bar found in Spain. Huge mirrors on either side of the walls and the high ceiling, gives the sense of large space to this small, yet cozy eatery. The lighting also adds to the comfy setting, where you can dine and enjoy your

The menu can be seen as pure Spanish delicacies, which are rich in tomatoes, olive oil and garlic, as seen through much of the food served at Gusto. We sampled much of the tapas that the chef had to offer, to name a few; Pan tomate aceite (Toasted bread with tomato and olive oil), Patatas

Bravas dulces (Sweet chili potatoes), Setitas Crujientes (crunchy mushrooms with paprika aioli), Aceitunas alinadas (marinated olives) and my favorite Albondigas de la abuela (Grandma style meatballs in tomato sauce), which was washed down with refreshing Sangria (red wine mixed with fresh fruit), also a traditional tapas accompaniment. All meals were served on small platters to be enjoyed by us all, which is the common way of enjoying tapas. The portions may have been small, but were very filling that I was not sure whether I could still fit in the main course. When the main course arrived, we were still full from the previous tapas spread, but we sampled the main courses of Dorada a la Bilbania (grilled

snapper with mashed potatoes and mixed salad) and Medallon de cordero con reduccion de vino tinto ( trio of lamb medallion in Spanish red wine reduction served with grilled potatoes and mixed vegetables) with the little room left in our already satisfied bellies. It seemed that the concept of the main course itself is tapas inspired, meaning it’s able to be shared with other members of your group. As filling as the whole meal was, we still had to sample the dessert which was Crema Catalana (Crème Catalan with crispy caramel coating) which was silky smooth on the tongue and subtly sweet. A note that the chef at Gusto wanted us to point out is, in Gusto “everything is possible”, which means however you want your meal, the people at Gusto will do their best to give you exactly what you desire. magazine.barudibali.com Food Review: Gusto Tapas Bar

BELIEVE IT OR NOT

Balinese Dreadlock Please don’t get fooled by the title, for this is not an

upbeat fashion article. Rather, this is more a story about how one’s path in life – a Balinese man in this case – is

determined by his hair. We are talking about dreadlocks, the kind of hair that is celebrated by the Rastafarians. In

Bali, many turn their hair into dreadlocks; probably this is due to its close association with not only fashion, but also lifestyle of a resort area. Yet, the kind of dreadlocks

we are telling you about is natural by all means. Yes, there are people in this island who are born in style, that is, with the dreads on their heads.

They possess a certain supernatural power like reading people’s mind or even controlling the weather. Many see this particular hairstyle as a statement that

kicks butts. However, for Balinese people (normally men),

having the birth-given dreadlocks means a noble task they need to carry on their shoulders during life. Being a Hindu priest in the future is one example. However, of course, becoming a priest is not the solely ‘gift’ for these

people. It is also said that the naturally-dreadlocked Balinese people possess a certain supernatural power

like reading people’s mind or even controlling the weather.

These dreadlocks grow, but the hair is becoming a living part of a body such as arms or legs. As the result, cutting the hair would cause an extreme pain as if you are

cutting your hands or any other limbs. Thus, people with this specific hair never cut their hair. Also, when we say

that the dreadlock grows, it doesn’t only mean that the hair would grow longer and longer; but also fatter and fatter! There are also cases when the many dreadlocks naturally unite themselves into one big, fat dreadlock.

The man in the picture is Komang Asa from Klungkung, a descendant of a high Hindu priest in the area. His hair

started knitting naturally in 1997 and keeps on knitting by itself up until today. 46

TEN REWARDING VIEWS AND ATTRACTIONS Being utterly adventurous while in Bali means going to places that are sited away from the center of the crowds. Of course, we cannot blame you if you feel like visiting popular attractions such as, among others, Kuta and the temple of Tanah Lot. Anyway, we’re not going to list down places of interest of all kinds; otherwise, we are going to remind you on the beauties that stretch out and beyond. These views may not be the main attractions, which provide a reason why they are somewhat uncared. Yet, try to make at least a five-minute stop at these spots; and notice on how their rewarding views and attractions could recharge your energy before continuing your journey.

1 Driveway of Tegehsari Temple in Jimbaran

If you’re heading back from Dreamland to Kuta direction, but not through the road of the University of Udayana, you will pass this temple on your left side before the road curves down. A small board with the name of this temple is placed by the road side, but for many times is missed due to its small size. Anyway, from the driveway of this temple, you can see the beautiful view of the long-stretched Jimbaran Bay. You can also see airplanes landing and taking off the runway of Ngurah Rai Airport from here.

Water spewing up at Water Blow, Nusa Dua

2 Steps to the beach in Bali Cliff

The beach of Bali Cliff in Jimbaran is probably one of the few beaches that are rarely visited by tourists. Since it is sited at the bottom of a cliff, you need to pass through quite a lot of steps going down. Definitely, going back up again would cost you energy, especially for those who are not used to using such a track. Therefore, a five-minute stop in the middle of the way is always recommended. It would be such a waste of spot, however, if you use it only to catch a breath; try to peek through the bushes and see the wonderful view of the ocean.

3 Water Blow in Nusa Dua

This spot is not really that visible; so, not many know about it. Water Blow is located at Mengiat Beach within the compound of BTDC (Bali Tourism Development Center) in Nusa Dua, an area where many big hotels and resorts are grouped in one location. This place is a perfect spot for you to just

4

unwind while watching nature does its magic. The sharp rocks in the area has some little tunnels that once hit by the waves will create spews of waters up above the ground to the air. No comfortable chair or umbrella is provided, thus making Water Blow pleasant only for a quick stop.

Steps to Impossibles Beach

Just like the beach in Bali Cliff, reaching Impossibles Beach requires a journey through many steps going down. However, even going down to Impossibles Beach could also be tiresome. Since the steps leading down to the beach are hidden, View of Vihara Amurva many who are visiting the area already spend Bhumi from a suspension their energy looking for their way going down. bridge in Blahbatuh Stopping at a point on the way down while resting, you can see breathtaking views of the ocean and also the neighboring Dreamland Beach.

5 Vihara Amurva Bhumi

This Buddhist temple is located down the bridge in Blahbatuh, in Gianyar. Just like Beji Temple in Ketewel, Vihara Amurva Bhumi offers a great view due to its position below the road. The many red ornaments of this temple are standing out in between the greens of nature surrounding it. Many couples use the bridge itself as a site to take their pre-wedding pictures. magazine.barudibali.com The Ten

6 View of Lake Tamblingan

Lake Tamblingan sits on the northern side of Gunung Batukaru, near Bedugul on the way to Singaraja. However, the best spot to enjoy the view of this lake is from above. When you pass Bedugul and enter the hillside road, you will encounter a Y-junction. Take the sharp left-turn and follow on the road. Green Coconut trees lining at Balangan Beach hills, forest trees, cool air and mists encircle this area. You can pick a spot here to enjoy the breathtaking view of the lake below while breathing the fresh air before continuing your activities.

7 Balangan Beach

Reaching Balangan Beach takes quite some time, even if you are driving. It is probably due to the narrow, dusty, bumpy road that leads to the beach area. However, once you get to the parking area (only a not-so-spacious land), don’t go straight down to beach. You might want to have a quick stop and enjoy the views of the ocean and lining coconut trees below.

8 Beji Temple in Ketewel

This temple is located in Ketewel, on the way to Sukawati from Bypass IB Mantra direction. Its position below the road level makes the view of this temple somewhat exciting, especially when there is a ceremony going on. Although some tourists know about this temple, there are many who skip this little attraction due to the temple’s unseen location down below the road.

9

Tegalalang

This one should be a popular stopping place north of Ubud on the way to Kintamani. Yet, many passing this area are only slowing down and enjoying the views from their vehicles. The view of rice terraces in Tegalalang is breathtaking and the air is very fresh. Thus, even a quick stop could certainly recharge your energy. The area is bit packed with hawkers, though; but don’t worry, for they are not aggressive. If you feel like spending a longer time, you can always go down to the rice terraces.

Tekanaji Temple

This little temple is unique due its location in the middle of a rice field. Also, just like the other temples in this list, Tekanaji is sited in a lower ground. The many trees by the roadsides provide adequate shades for any passersby to make a quick stop and enjoy the view before continuing their journey. Tekanaji Temple is located near the long bridge in the border of Gianyar and Klungkung. 50

Sunshade for Sunny Days Of course I noticed the lines of umbrellas coupled with daybeds along the beaches of Double Six and Kuta during my

on the cover

first visit in Bali as an adult. However, it is funny to see how these umbrellas are for many times not used – sunbathers would drag

their beds to direct sun. No, I don’t mean that these umbrellas have come to no use at all; as a person who adores the sun, I still use an umbrella especially when it gets way too hot. Yet, the umbrella

phenomenon doesn’t only apply for the beaches or some of the Asian tourists (c’mon guys, it’s Bali! You need to enjoy the sun

some time), but also as one of the essential needs for holy Hindu

ceremonies. This is interesting. Honestly speaking, I just recently became aware of the importance of an umbrella within Balinese Hinduism – my bad, I know. Why? Because it should be obvious: many temples have umbrellas on them and many ceremonies

necessitate the use of umbrellas. Certainly, the Balinese people don’t use the umbrellas merely for decorations.

For the Balinese Hindu, ceremonial umbrellas are known as tedung which literally means “shade”. Obviously, shade doesn’t simply act

as the only function of these umbrellas, for they also bear a greater meaning: to guard. Generally, these umbrellas would be positioned around the temple compounds in

alignment to various shrines that are oriented towards the scared mountain of Gunung Agung. Colors of the

umbrellas also normally reflect the type of ceremony that is taking place. The colors most likely used and

found practically in every important ceremony are the pure shades of white and yellow which in Balinese Hindu act as a symbol dedicated to the different

manifestations of God. You must also have probably seen these umbrellas during your stay here in Bali. Apparently, meanings of these umbrellas have

shifted these days, especially prior to the impact of

tourism in Bali. Many establishments such as hotels and villas have been using these umbrellas to add

the so-called truly Balinese touch for their lobbies, dining areas and even gardens. Personally, of

course, I couldn’t agree more that these umbrellas

bring the art, culture as well as religion with them in beautifying and complimenting the Balinese

architecture. Surely, if the use of these umbrellas doesn’t somewhat offend the original, holy

purposes of these umbrellas, I think there should be more umbrellas put on display.

Located 1km out of Lovina town, Sing Sing Waterfall is the perfect place for people who wish to see a waterfall and do not want to deviate far from the main food.

Singaraja was once the capital city of bali before Denpasar. It was Bali's main port during the Dutch occupation and still retains colonial feel, especially with its clean, quiet and distinctve culture.

16

Taman Ujung or also known as the Ujung Water Palace was built in 1919 by the late King of Karangasem, I Gusti Bagus Jelantik, to welcome and serve important guests and Kings from other countries.

Uluwatu is known for its breathtaking cliff views, with its spectacular temple overlooking the clear blue water of the ocean below. Plenty of monkeys inhibit the area. Kecak dance is also regularly performed in Uluwaatu's amphitheatre.

Uluwatu - Kecak Dance

4. Since there are ranges of shops offering pretty much the same things, you can always walk away from one shop to another if a deal cannot be reached. But walk slowly. Normally, if you offer a reasonable price on a bargain, in which the vendor can still make some profits and the price is good for you, the vendor would call you back to his/her shop as you walk away. 5. Tell the vendor that if he/she gives you a good price, than you will tell your other friends to shop from him/her. 6. Know the martket prices, or, pretend you do. By saying “I’ve seen this product before much cheaper” will probably lead to a cheaper price. 7. Have fun and stay friendly. Bargaining is part of the culture and it should be a fun activity.

4. That a priest is very important, so whenever he is praying, don’t sit higher then him and don’t bother him with your flash from your camera. 5. That you should also not take flashing pictures of other people praying. 6. To wear a sarong and a ribbon when you attend a ceremony (those are often provided to you when necessary).

Medewi

B

Balian

Balian gets some swells and is a quiet place in North Bali. Its location that is close to the main road makes surfers can easily access this place.

Canggu & Pererenan

C

Canggu and Pererenan are places that most surfers will know about, with their largerthan-Kuta swells, sandy beach and not much else. Canggu is however becoming better known in tourist and expat circles. D

Kuta Reef

E

Belangan

F

Dreamland

Kuta Reef is an exposed reef break that is often working. May–October (dry season) is the best time of year for waves here. The reef in Belangan is close to shore and a short paddle out. Belangan is a very wellknown break and can get very crowded in the peak season. Dreamland is famous for its waves that can peel perfectly for hundreds of meters over the reef. The waves are also reserved for expert surfers only. Swimming here is advisable only on low tide. G

Bingin

Bingin gets very crowded through the peak season with only one small take-off area. The wave itself is pretty mechanical, but short.

H

Lebih

I

Impossibles

The surf break in Lebih is greatly affected by direction of the swell. Impossibles is the least crowded surfing area in Bali. It is located between Bingin and Padang Padang, so if you are at either of those two places you can see what is happening at Impossibles. J

Padang Padang

Padang Padang only starts to work when a big swell is running. It is of an easy paddle out through the channel. K Uluwatu There are 4 different sections at Uluwatu:

Temples which is a long and hollow wave that works on the mid to high tide, The peak right in front of the warungs in line with the cave also best on high tide, Racetrack which is a super-fast with a barrel that works on the low tide, but gets seriously shallow, and Outside Corner which is considered by many to be one of the best waves anywhere in the world. The corner won't even start to break unless the swell is at least in the 8' range. L

Nyang Nyang

Nyang Nyang beach is known as one of the great spot to surf in Bali. Hiding from the crowd of people plus huge wave makes this beach like a secret paradise for every surfers. M

Sanur Reef

Q

Padang Galak

R

Ketewel

S

Padangbai

To get to this reef you have to drive into the town itself and then weave your way south, there are also a couple of other good waves in this area. So it pays to do a bit of exploring. Northern part of Nusa Dua is Sri Lanka, a bowly right which breaks into a deep water channel. Sanur Reef is a sheltered reef break that only works once in a while. November–April (wet season) provides optimum time of year for the waves. Padang Galak is a reliable rivermouth beach break north of Sanur. The surf break is quite popular here, but only works under certain conditions. The surfing crowd at Ketewel usually consists of locals and Japanese, including girls on body boards. Ketewel seemed like a place beginners/ intermediates might enjoy, not people looking for epic surfing. Padangbai has the flat bottomed mixed reef and sandy bottom with some walls.

Green Bali

Green Bali is situated at the bottom of a cliff. No worries going down but after you have been surfing for a couple of hours the return leg is a bit harder.

FACTS ABOUT BALI Bali is one of the tens of thousands islands in the Indonesian archipelago that lies between the country’s most populated island, Java, and Lombok. It is also one of the country’s most developed provinces with the capital in Denpasar, located on the southern part of the island. Bali is divided into 8 regencies (Badung, Bangli, Buleleng, Gianyar, Jembrana, Karangasem, Klungkung and Tabanan) and 1 city (Denpasar). Unlike most of the Muslim-majority Indonesia, around 94% out of Bali’s 3 million population adhere to Balinese Hinduism, which is a combination of the existing local beliefs and Hindu influences. As the main tourist destination in Indonesia, Bali is renowned for its highly developed arts, including music, dance, sculpture, painting, metalworking and leather. The island is also the home of wildlife such as hundreds of bird species (including the endangered Bali Starling), Indian Muntjac, Mouse-deer, Leopard Cat, Black Giant Squirrel, and several species of macaque and leaf monkey.

The island’s countless natural irresistible charms have awarded Bali as one of the world’s most visited holiday destination. With its tropical climate (temperatures averaging 31 degrees Celsius, 88 fahrenheit), Bali is warm all year round – which is perfect to explore its smoking volcanoes, stepped rice fields, remote beaches, towering cliffs, famous surf breaks and the majestic thousand- yearold temples. The hospitable and friendly natives of the Balinese and their way of life are by many considered as a magnet, inspiring those who have been in the island to go back again and those who have not to come.
