TEAM'S NOTE

Hey guys, We really DO hope that Bali is treating you nice these days. Oh, by the way, you can stand under my umbrella… ella…ella…eh…eh… Okay, stop laughing now; whether you like it or not, this Rihana’s hit should describe and fit for Bali’s current weather condition and our warm intention to be your umbrella. Why? Because we still hit the road no matter how big the rains were to provide you with some of the coolest information that you need to know about Bali so you could sit and relax under your comfortable shades and see all of the places and other spots yourself, yet stay dry, through this super cool “THE MAG”. Anyway, we went eastern to Klungkung regency and visited some of Bali’s most historical places for this edition’s Bali Road Trip. But that’s not it, for in Klungkung we also got the chance to see people from the local village in doing their activities (see page 20). Of course, visiting places got us all tired and hungry. This time, we visited a Japanese warung called K2 in Oberoi and were very surprised on how a windy and rainy night could feel so warm there (see page 44). For lunch, we dropped by at Grocer & Grind on Kayu Jati Street in Seminyak and tasted some of the island’s finest sandwiches (see page 38). Yet again, nothing is perfect and it’s not all about fun. We made the time to stop at the Institute for Phisically & Mentally Handicapped Children or better known as the Yayasan Pembinaan Anak Cacat (YPAC) in Bypass Nusa Dua. In the institute, we gained the knowledge on how the institute’s residents, our less-fortunate fellows, are also important and valuable members in our community (see page 28). Well, all in all, we just want to advise you to not let the rain spoil your days in Bali. If you feel like going out and it’s raining outside, just go and grab an umbrella…ella… ella… Simple, right?

BALI FLASH

Little make-over for the beaches Regular visitors of the beach in Double Six would probably notice a little change undertaken in the area as a cement fence along the beach, separating it from the road, has now been stood up. The local authority said that the fence is aimed to block the sand from the beach area to go onto the road. The action has, of course, attracted a lot of pros and cons. Several visitors on the beach area claimed to be a little bit disturbed for they now cannot step freely from the beach to the road – they need to find the exit gate first. While several others in the restaurants complained because now they have limited views to beach area. In Kuta Beach, a big temple-like gate is now being built right at the end of the road next to The Wave Club. Authority in the area said that the gate is now on construction as a part of a temple which is also located in the area. Aside from that, the gate would also act as the main entrance to the beach area.

Trattoria in Canggu Club

Who doesn’t know Trattoria? This constantly-busy Italian restaurant that has been serving a steady flow of satisfied customers in Oberoi, has also now landed its fine reputation in Canggu Club. Opening of the restaurant in Canggu Club was a huge blast, with laser show and bongo performance along with many others on the stage. One thing for sure is that this restaurant would be an ideal relaxing spot while enjoying varieties an Italian kitchen has to offer after an intense day of exercising at Canggu Club. 16

Mass cremation in Kuta

Smokes from burning bodies, multi-tiered bamboo, paper, string, tinsel, silk, mirrors, flowers were occupying the beach in Kuta when a mass cremation took place on January 23. The ngaben (cremation) that involved a number of families, including the descendant of the Kings of Kuta, attracted and invited many visitors passing the area. The gamelan music played by the beach side somewhat acted like a sweet lullaby, accompanying the deads as they carried on their journey into the world after life.

BALI ROAD TRIP

Located in the eastern part of Bali, Klungkung stands as the home of many historical bits and pieces left for today's world to see

W

e drove the coastal road of Bypass Ida Bagus Mantra in a rainy January day, when the apparently not so good weather was somewhat still acting gentle by allowing us to have, at least, a blurry view of Nusa Penida on our right side. The drizzling sky of Bali’s eastern division accompanied and greeted our way in as we entered one of regions in the island that, unfortunately, doesn’t receive many visits from the tourists: Klungkung. The fact that Klungkung bears an important part in history and culture of Bali, it is strange to

learn that this place is far from the number of crowd one could always expect in Kuta and/or Ubud; especially because for around 200 years back in the 1300s Klungkung was the base of the ruler of the island. That means, this region is the home of many historical bits and pieces left for today’s world to see. As an instance is the Hall of Justice (Kerta Gosa) that was built in the mid of the 18th century and is now still standing in the center of Klungkung Town. This court hall is built in the middle of a pond and particularly known for its magnificent ceiling paintings. The paintings themselves are depicting heaven, which will reward those who obey the law and order in their lives, and the horrors and punishments that await the sinners. In the center of the hall are a rectangular table and six chairs for three judges, who were priests, and three assessors.

Hall of Justice at Klungkung's Kerta Gosa Puppet coated by black coins from Kamasan Village Head of Buddha from Kamasan Village Banyan tree in the yard Dasar Bhuana Temple in Gelgel

Just across the Kerta Gosa, on the other side of the road, stands erected the monument of Puputan Klungkung (Klungkung Battle), an event when the ruler together with hundreds of his men were marching down the street and killed themselves rather than surrender to the foreign power. The monument itself is the phallic symbol (penis) to describe the power of the ruler before the Dutch occupancy and also his manliness due to the many wives he had. We also visited Kamasan Village, a home of painters and gold and silver smiths, which is known for its gold and silver crafting, bullet shell engraving, coins and traditional puppets painting. Artistic results of the skillful villagers of Kamasan are used not only for religious and ceremonial purposes, but also as fine products that are exported overseas.

Away a little bit southern, we dropped by at an old dynasty named Gelgel. Gelgel is an interesting part of Klungkung mainly due to its history as Bali’s center of arts in the early 1500s. During that time, Bali received an influx of the neighboring Javanese artisans and members of the royal court. As of today, Gelgel hosts one of the most important Hindu temples in the island, Pura Dasar Bhuana. As a temple dedicated to all of the Hindus in Bali, Dasar Bhuana is very crowded particularly during big Holidays such as Galungan. Our next stop is the village of Unda River. Obviously, the name of the village is taken from the great expanse of the stony Unda River that surrounds a number of villages at flood times. The river is easily recognized for as you stroll down the Bypass Ida Bagus Mantra heading to Padang Bai, it runs on the bottom of the

magazine.barudibali.com Historical Klungkung

21

BALI ROAD TRIP last, longest bridge. However, we stopped at another point of the river, from where we could see the villagers doing their activities – like traditionally taking sand from the bottom of the river using only simple hand tools.

Big dam at Unda River

The traditional Bali is very much felt in this part of Klungkung, for many of villagers still use the river to bathe, wash their clothes or simply to just relax on the sides. The people are also friendly that a family in the village opened the doors of their house wide for us and served us the Balinese coffee and palm wine (tuak). The son in-

law of the family was adequately telling us about the quiet pace of life in the area; and that Klungkung’s fishing villages and hillside communities that were barely accessible by road are now a little bit disturbed by the pace of the 20 th century. The hospitality of this family together with the other villagers made us, as strangers, felt like being at home. The presence of all the family members in welcoming us in their home, which again made us felt so important, was a living proof that the warmth and friendly manners of Balinese people remain untouched. The cavity of "Yoni", the opposite of Shiva's phallic symbol.

The Elephant Cave The Elephant Cave or locally known as Goa Gajah is believed to have been carved in the 11th century on a hillside as a monastery which is used by the Balinese as a holy place to worship God Shiva and his elephantheaded son Ganesha. The entrance of the cave is of a carved menacing face with a widely-opened mouth.

In front of the cave are two enormous rectangular bathing pools with water fountains. The pools have water gushing from waterspouts held by standing female statues, which also by many visitors are used as the background when taking pictures. Little ruins of the temples that were struck by a huge earthquake in the past were neatly placed in a yard right the opposite of the pools.

Inside the cave, which is T-shaped, the phallic symbol of God Shiva (Lingam), its female counterpart (Yoni) and statue of Ganesha are placed in three different points. The cave itself is pretty narrow and not big. In other words, the cave could be suffocating at times when visitors are flocking in; not to mention that the cave is also frequented by the Balinese to pray.

Big ruins can be spotted down the hill through the mossy steps. The view below is spectacular, especially with the tropical rainforest atmosphere and the sound of running water from a nearby river. A Buddha statue can be found within a small temple in this area, which gives a vivid picture on how it was like Bali in the past.

Yayasan Pembinaan Anak Cacat (YPAC) Institute for Phisically & Mentally Handicapped Children What is your organization and what does it do? We are a non-profit foundation that strives for the social acceptance for the physically and mentally disabled. For many times, people, especially children, who are disabled or handicapped are neglected and perceived only as a burden to their families and society. Therefore, we fight to show that people with disabilities are important and valuable members of any community.

What is your short-term and long-term goal? For the time being, we only aim to provide a home for these unfortunate children, and the adults too, where they can feel comfortable without being despised by others. Here, they are provided with food, bed and inhouse education and training through our private school. However, what they have received so far is of course still very limited. Like the food for instance; we only receive a little amount of rice while we have 46 children to feed. Our building condition is also far from perfect. During rainy season, we would have several leakages which later on will make all the rooms so damp; thus creating an unhealthy living condition. Those are just some examples of the issues we are facing currently. We really wish to become a ‘healthy’ center of rehabilitation for disabled and handicapped children in the future. That means we need the adequate facilities, bigger area for the dorms and classrooms and many more.

Do you know… The institute has normal running costs and donations are gratefully accepted. However, some of our children have specific needs: growing children need artificial limbs replaced, tires wear out on wheelchairs. Additionally, the children need bedding, cleaning supplies, school supplies, cooking and laundry equipments. We would love to make the bathroom areas more accessible for those who use wheelchairs or have prosthetic limbs. Of course these larger projects need larger funding. THE MAG Charity Story

Has your organization made (or is making) any progress in achieving its goals? Well, obviously we are not a commercial organization; thus, we don’t have any supports for publication. However, we are very fortunate to have several personal donors helping us with our daily operational needs so that we could go on. With the help of these donors, now we have several classrooms where the children could learn. We also have a meeting hall where we could hold several activities. But again, we need further support to maintain everything. Has your actions made any significant change in line with the goals and missions of your organization? We started with only with five children registered in our foundation. Today, we have 46 permanent residents – that is the children and adults who live in our dorm – and a couple more of the non-permanent residents. In other words, more and more parents from poor families are becoming more aware that even if their children are handicapped, they still need education and skill development. Of course, we are very happy with this fact. Aside from that, these handicapped children were all very low self-esteemed. But now, they can mingle with each other very well and act like normal social creatures. A number of our graduates have now been working in some industrial aspects for quite some time. The knowledge and skill they gained from YPAC are very useful for them to finally become independent.

My First Trip to Bali

THE MAG My First Trip to Bali

Nigel in TJ's (1984)

Nigel in TJ's (2009)

Bali was only one of the stopping points on his England-Australia route back in the late 70s. Yet, there seemed to be a changing plan for when he finally stepped foot on the Island of God, the longing to reach the land down under was all dented. Instead, he rebuilt all his plans and decided to just settle in this strange tropical island he now calls home. The rebuilding included the transformation of a vegetarian restaurant into TJ’s, a Mexican Bar & Restaurant that has been entertaining the crowd down in Poppies Lane 1 for almost 25 years.

Why did you go to Bali in 1979? Actually Bali was only one of my stopping points on my travel route from England to Australia. I was leaving from Jakarta to Surabaya on a train and continued with a bus from Banyuwangi to Bali. With who and where? I was traveling with my then wife and…yeah, we visited many places. What is the best memory about that trip? Well, I was traveling very slowly. I left England in 1975 and finally arrived in Jakarta in 1979 after spending times and living in several different countries that my then wife and I passed. All in all, finding Poppies Lane would be the best memory of the trip. What was the best restaurant back then? It was the Poppies; this place was named after it.

What is the biggest change since then? This area (Poppies) was all sand and coconut groves at the time; although Jalan Legian already existed. The transports stopped at Sunset Road, so if you wanted to go to this area you had to walk. And after six o’clock you can’t go anywhere, because all the transports stopped at that time. Is there anything you miss about the old Bali? Today, all got sophisticated and modern; while I can still clearly remember all the beautiful traditional buildings that used to stand in this area. Although I have to say that Bali deserves all these changes; it’s for the better. What made you decide to just live here? I don’t know, because my plan was only to live here for a year or two; after that, I continued the journey to Australia. But I have to say that I’m very glad ended up in this island. magazine.barudibali.com My First Trip to Bali

The Year of Ox Just weeks after the New Year party, other parties are held in several spot in the island on January 26 to welcome yet another New Year: Chinese New Year 2056. Several Buddhist temples like the one in Kuta were making spotlights in each of their areas with scores of red decorations and, of course, the Lion Dance andt Dragon performances. Just like any other ceremonies ever held in Bali, the Chinese New Year celebration that fell on a weekday attracted many visitors, both the non-Buddhist locals and tourists, to enjoy the festivity. The typical color of any Chinese celebration, that is red, was everywhere coloring the scene to welcome the New Year of Ox. Just like it is symbolized, this year would 36

be full of prosperity; yet, of course, through fortitude and hard work. Aside from that, according to the belief, a lot of great things would be achieved this year. Decorations conveying the New Year greetings, Chinese calligraphy posters showing Chinese idioms and other decorations including Chinese knots, paper cuttings and couplets were all giving signs of earnest wishes. Yet, different from the previous Chinese New Year’s Eves, the one this year didn’t rain; and that caused a little wariness for a number of believers since it is believed as a bad luck. However, a little rain that lasted for only less than an hour in the afternoon of January 26 relieved all the worries.

THE MAG THE MAG Food Review: Grocer & Grind

Grocer & Grind may be sited a little deeper from the main road in Oberoi, yet its reputation has made a little spot of Kayu Jati Street, where it is located, crowded with flows of vehicles of satisfied customers who apparently pay steady visits. The Grocer & Grind concept of a onestop deli selling all the salads, antipastos, meats and sandwiches adjoined with a bistro-style restaurant just next door is just too alluring to be ignored.

To prove all the nice stories we’ve heard about this place, we dropped by for lunch; and we were pretty lucky for if only we came there 5 minutes later, chances were we needed to wait for quite some time for both the tables in the restaurant and deli were all full. Anyway, there we were finally sitting in the restaurant with lunch menu in our hands. The list of the delicacies is very rich, yet it is arranged in a simple manner that it didn’t give us a hard time to pick the meals and the drinks. My pita sandwich with rare roasted beef tenderloin, camembert, tamarind chutney and ruccola is certainly finger-licking. A friend who was with me at the time looked so amazed with the meal he had. With a full mouth, and almost got choked, he forced his way only to tell me that the gold band snapper fillet he had was wonderful – especially with the tagaroshi and lime crust complimenting the snapper.

We were pretty full at the time, but somehow we wanted more. And so we called the staff and ordered some more. This time, we went with something (or some things) lighter. Mediterranean vegetables chargrilled with garlic thyme and creamy mash with nutmeg and chive were very pleasant. Only minutes after, the chargrilled chicken Caesar salad with parmesan, croutons and anchovies mayonnaise arrived on our table (:D). It was so refreshing. We concluded the lovely mid-day feasting occasion with, of course, the Grocer & Grind fresh roasted beans, Vanilla Latte. As the menu reads “comfort food served simply, yet stylishly”, Grocer & Grind positively has managed to create a simple yet stylish ambiance for both restaurant and deli. THE MAG

It was a normal surrounding as I stepped into the reception; but that was only until I checked in and showed my way to the villa. A swimming pool with natural green stones was on sight as I walked the steps planted in the green, grassy ground. Yet, what astounded me the most and fully caught my eyes was the way all of the villas are patterned, which somewhat brought me back to my visit to a unique traditional Balinese village called Penglipuran up in Bangli regency. The twin-looking villas are neatly arranged in two rows, separated by a

The only difference that it made was what I had behind the bamboo fence inside the villa, where the preserved traditional features blended harmoniously with modern comforts. Behind the terrace, lies a kitchenette fully equipped with all modern facilities. Other public conveniences such as open-air and garden restaurants, fitness centre, spa, golf facilities, game room, and boutique/gift shop are also on hand – which made my stay even more pleasant. K2 Restaurant

Modesty Hits the 'Eat Street'

While more and more, fine and finer establishments of all sorts are swarming up the areas in Bali, with each of the establishments claiming itself to be the finest and the most of this and that, there is this one place in the ‘Eat Street’ of Oberoi standing and pleasing the visitors with its sincere and modest authenticity: K2, a Japanese dining. Only taking a small portion right next to Kaizan, K2 fixes the authentic, home-cooked Japanese delights in a way and atmosphere that know no fuss. Translating the up-scale influences from Kaizan and Ryoshi into a warung concept, K2 provides its customers with a cozy ambiance within minimalist Japanese-styled restaurant complete with all the supporting details like the ornaments displayed on the wall. A bar that can sit more than ten people is also on hand, making it likely for lonely diners to stay comfortable without feeling awkward. For those dining with their partners and/ or friends, K2’s tables are just the thing for they are

set in an environment where an evening feasting in the recently Bali’s rainy and windy nights could feel so warm. The menu itself is very rich with some of unusual dishes that will please your tongue, tummy, and, most importantly, your wallet! The price at K2 starts from IDR 10,000; seriously, it’s not an easy task these days to find fine quality food for that low value of money. Starting off our night in K2 was the house’s drink signature: Chu-hai. This Japanese vodka “syouchuu” is muddled with soda and fresh juice like lime, strawberry, lyche and many others. Even more unique is the blend with cuba, that is lime, mint and sugar. Served in an oversized glass tankard, Chu-hai is a definite refreshing drink yet not really that overpowering since it is of distilled wheat alcohol. Also, with the alcohol shortage currently hitting Bali, K2 has tactically transformed the many available ‘ingredients’ into what is called “K2’s Arak Festival”. Among others listed on the festival are the “Bloody Made”, “Arak Margarita” and “Happy Ending” in which blends of arak (local alcohol that shares the taste of vodka) create flavorsome cocktails in reasonable prices.

Out of the varied delicacies listed on the menu, we picked Mixed Oden (fish cakes, fried tofu, egg and vegetables in clear Dashi soup), Nira-Tama (omelet with garlic chives), Murasaki Imo Korokke (purple sweet potato croquettes), Volcano Salad (salad with mixed sashimi), Mother Pearl Tempura and Mixed Yakitori (various grills like chicken, pork, beams, asparagus and mushroom on skewers). Again, with such reasonable prices, all of these delicacies are the winners and very satisfying. It’s been only one year since the first time K2 opened its doors for the Seminyak’s food creeper; yet, with the fine food, great price and pleasant setting all wrapped in a humble fashion, looks like K2 will still be pleasing and entertaining its customers for countless time to come.

BELIEVE IT OR NOT

It is not something new to learn that Bali is a land full of mystical things. Even the smallest element like a stone could mean a great deal, especially when it is ‘dwelled’ by the spirits. In other words, the magical and supernatural occasions in the island occur due to the Balinese hospitality towards the beings from the other world. As an instance, each of the Balinese houses is completed with a temple (be it small or big) so that the ‘unseen’ inhabitants could also find their home within the house area.

Each of the Balinese houses is completed with a temple so that the ‘unseen’ inhabitants could also find their home within the house area.

There are stories, from the people who live in houses that don’t have temples, saying that strange happenings like weird sounds coming out of nowhere frequently occurred especially during night times. Apparently, after consulted with the locals who have supernatural knowledge, the sounds came from the wandering spirits in the house. After a temple was built – which is aimed to be the home for the spirits – all the sounds and odd happenings stopped occurring. In other parts of Indonesia, probably also everywhere else in the world, people would tend to get rid of these creatures should any occurs in their house. However, the Balinese are different for they wish so much to live in harmony that they would provide a shelter and even ‘food’ for their unseen ‘housemates’. There is no need to worry, though, as for people who are not sensitive would not notice the existence of these spirits. Actually, it really depends on whether you believe it or not.

Many signboards in many tourist spots are noticing all the visitors to not take anything and leave nothing but their footprints on site. Well, unfortunately, the statement is half right for there are also a lot more signboards saying “MADE TO ORDER” — yes, in capital letters. This should be a clear sign for everyone reading the boards: step in, make your orders and take them home with you. Anyway, listed below are some of the souvenirs you should take back home with you after spending fabulous times in Bali (with some of them are “made to order” to meet your taste and style).

Bintang T-shirts

You certainly can’t turn a blind eye on this particular object, for it is seen practically on every corner of tourist spot in the island – be it in the shops or stuck on someone’s body. Bali is Bintang and Bintang is Bali! People drink it (the beer) and they wear it (the t-shirt).

Wood Handicraft

Bali is the home of many fine artworks, such as the one made from wood. Talented craftsmen from many regions in the island have proven their skill in creating a wooden piece of art with a careful attention even to the smallest details. Flawless shapes of humans, animals, abstract structures of all sizes and many more can widely be found in the island.

Iron Handicraft

As popularly known, Bali is a famous tourist destination and have so many talented art workers with their valuable artworks. Iron handicrafts as one of Balinese art worker product such as Candle Holders, Wall Decorations, Room Decorations, Artistic Lamps and more had been popularly known in the entire Indonesia and overseas.

Bali Coffee

Bali Coffee is one way to explore the rich tradition of Bali through the flavorful, freshest and finest local coffee beans. Its distinct characteristics created from beans that are cultivated in the highlands of Bali, where volcanic soil and a cool climate provide a highly favorable environment for the coffee tree would certainly bring the Balinese ambiance into your home. Just close your eyes when drinking it.

Accessories

Silver Jewelries

Silver jewelry is another hot deal for you to bring back home, provided that the price is cheaper here. But, of course, that’s not only it because… do we really need to say it again? Bali is the home of countless fine artisans whose skills have been recognized overseas. In other words, the island’s silversmiths will guarantee that every piece of the silver beads jewelry meets the finest standard quality.

Surfboard

Surfing is a big deal in Bali and there will be chances when you might end up buying a board yourself. Okay, so you don’t know how surf; that’s not an excuse! Many tourists visiting Bali have zero surfing knowledge; but as they hit the waters on board accompanied by the instructors from surf schools, the addiction would take control. You may be not a professional, but it’s always nice to make your surfboard personal.

Painting of Bali Starling

Bali Starling is a very beautiful bird, not to mention about the endangered state. Its feathers are pure white with black tips on the wing and tail feathers. Their legs are grey, and the bare skin around their brown eyes is blue. The bill has a rich horn color with a yellow tip. Probably the most noticeable feature is the lacy crest of feathers on the head. Both male and female Bali starlings are crested. Since Bali Starling can only be found in Bali, and that it will be a crime to take it out of the island, you might want to take its figure in the form of painting back home.

THE MAG The Ten

You might notice that many of both men and, especially, women have at least one item of the locally made accessories: leather, beads, necklaces, bracelets, earrings and even sandals. Also, you might want to pay a closer inspection in your local fashion or footwear store and reveal many of the stock items are actually manufactured in Bali and other areas in Indonesia. So, while you are here in Bali, why not get a stock of your own to bring back home – not to mention that you have more options to choose from with a lot better prices.

Sarong

Not only highly-skilled in crafting and engraving concrete materials, the Balinese artisans are also talented on cloths like sarong. Many sarongs different embroideries and paintings in many different colors and sizes are spread everywhere in the island to find. The one sunbathing next to you on a Bali beach might use the same sarong as the covering base; but on a beach back home, you’d be the only one looking stunningly different.

Hatten Wine

This is for the sake of old sweet time you spent during your stay

with your beloved ones down in Poppies Lane or any other spots in Bali. Bali might not be a place you’d think of as a wine producing area; but hey, eventually the island has vineyards. What’s important for you to note is that the tropical climate like the one Bali has creates a unique character of the winemaking in the island, which later on will create a distinct character to the wine produced.

Surfin’ Bali

on the cover

IT HAD BEEN QUITE A WHILE since the last time I strolled down

the lanes in Kuta, an area largely known as the Mecca for shoppers, sunbathers, party-goers or even for those who simply adore a

relaxing walk on the beach before finally enjoying the sunset. I’ve

been living on this island for two years now and I’ve developed this idea in my head that Kuta is only for tourists – the cheesy ones,

sorry to say. Yet, a recent visit to the area has reopened my eyes

on how vibrant and exiting Kuta is. I mean, Kuta was a must-visit tourist spot back in the day when I was still a visitor; and I could

clearly remember that on the beach of Kuta, I got my first surfing lesson.

Yep, I didn’t mention it earlier, but Kuta is also the heaven for

surfers. The colorful surfboards lining on the beach have for many

times sparked a different kind of appeal, calling the visitors to give

them a try and ride the waves. This is exactly what made me visited Kuta years back during my first trip to the island. I got the call. And I surfed the waves of Kuta. I was very thrilled. Now I fully realize that the tourists have their own

reasons on why they visit Kuta: shoppers for the ranks of

souvenir shops, sunbathers for the long-stretched white sandy beach, party-goers for the enormous bars and

clubs. I went there for the surf, and would for sure be going there again.

For the love of God, I’m not a cheesy person! And so

aren’t all the others visiting Kuta. Don’t listen to me when I said you, the visitors of Kuta, were cheesy. I

took it back; because, whoever you are visiting Kuta, you rock!!

Colorful surfboards are lining on a shop down in Poppies Lane. Some of

these boards are brought to the beach

for visitors to rent, while the rest will stay at the shop for sale.

Bali is one of the tens of thousands islands in the Indonesian archipelago that lies between the country’s most populated island, Java, and Lombok. It is also one of the country’s most developed provinces with the capital in Denpasar, located on the southern part of the island. Bali is divided into 8 regencies (Badung, Bangli, Buleleng, Gianyar, Jembrana, Karangasem, Klungkung and Tabanan) and 1 city (Denpasar). Unlike most of the Muslimmajority Indonesia, around 94% out of Bali’s 3 million population adhere to Balinese Hinduism, which is a combination of the existing local beliefs and Hindu influences. As the main tourist destination in Indonesia, Bali is renowned for its highly developed arts, including music, dance, sculpture, painting, metalworking and leather. The island is also the home of wildlife such as hundreds of bird species (including the endangered Bali Starling), Indian Muntjac, Mouse-deer, Leopard Cat, Black Giant Squirrel, and several species of macaque and leaf monkey.

The island’s countless natural irresistible charms have awarded Bali as one of the world’s most visited holiday destination. With its tropical climate (temperatures averaging 31 degrees Celsius, 88 fahrenheit), Bali is warm all year round – which is perfect to explore its smoking volcanoes, stepped rice fields, remote beaches, towering cliffs, famous surf breaks and the majestic thousandyear-old temples. The hospitable and friendly natives of the Balinese and their way of life are by many considered as a magnet, inspiring those who have been in the island to go back again and those who have not to come.

Bargaining in Bali 1. No matter how much the vendors give as the opening price, you have to bargain for as much as half (or even less) of the price. 2. It is better for you to go to the shop that has everything: t-shirts, shorts, wood handicrafts, etc. By doing a one-stop shopping, which means you will buy quite a lot, it is easier for you to get a bigger discount. 3. Since there are ranges of shops offering pretty much the same things, you can always walk away from one shop to another if a deal cannot be reached. But walk slowly. Normally, if you offer a reasonable price on a bargain, in which the vendor can still make some profits and the price is good for you, the vendor would call you back to his/ her shop as you walk away. 4. Try not to be not so apparent that you really want the thing you are looking at on a shop; the vendors are not stupid and can smell your desire, thus will take the advantage by putting the price high. 5. Tell the vendor that if he/she gives you a good price, than you will tell your other friends to shop from him/her. 6. Know the martket prices, or, pretend you do. By saying “I’ve seen this product before much cheaper” will probably lead to a cheaper price. 7. Have fun and stay friendly. Bargaining is part of the culture and it should be a fun activity.
