We ventured through twisty roads in search of beaches, some tourists may not know about. To recharge our travel worn bodies, we spent the night in a peaceful, yet revitalizing villa, situated in the Seminyak area simply called The Villas. Its beautiful setting and calm surroundings gave us the feeling of total peace. We also tried traditional Indonesian cuisine at Cabe Rawit and indulged ourselves in Mediterranean delights at Nero Bali to fill our ever hungry hearts. With all said and done, we are wishing ourselves a Happy 1st year anniversary, and YES, it’s been a year and we’re still here…and we’re here to stay!

Bali Earns Another World Title The myriad number of spas that have been taking a major part in Bali’s tourism finally paid off, for the island has just recently been awarded the Best Spa Tourism in the World 2009. The Wellness Award 2009 held in Berlin last month acclaimed that Bali is the home of particularly unique spas. Adding the title, the CEI Asia 2009 has also awarded Bali as the Best Island Destination for the year 2009. These last awards are just some of many, as Bali already won the World's Best International Destination award of the Travel and Leisure magazine six times, up until 2008. Yup, that's something to be proud of!

A New Speedboat Donated for Lake Batur

Is Bali Having Another Commercial Airport? Bali Sky Pours Down Ice

Storm of big ice chunks along with heavy winds struck Denpasar last month. This extremely rare occasion was the first to hit the island, especially due to Bali’s location in the tropical equatorial zones. No human casualties, only several houses were affected by the storm. Experts from the meteorology agency have also predicted that cumulonimbus clouds (wind squalls and lighting storms) would occur in Bali during the season shift between March and May.

Reports said that Governor Pastika has been visiting the Buleleng Airport, which shows his seriousness in establishing an alternative airport in Bali’s northern part. However, it is still unclear whether or not the airport will be used for commercial aviation. On the other hand, the regional government of Buleleng is concerned that the operational costs of the airport will create a great burden for the local government. Thus, provincial government’s financial involvement is needed should the plan finally take place. The airport in Buleleng is currently used by private aviation and a recently established flight school.

Canggu Club Tennis Tournament The peaceful and tranquil area of Canggu, a quiet residential area was transformed into a hotspot for tennis lovers last March 30th until April 5th as Canggu Club Bali held The Yak Canggu Classic Open Tennis tournament. The tournament was opened to all tennis enthusiasts (amateurs and pros, club members and nonmembers) willing to test their skills for a total cash prize of Rp 5.000.000 for open division and over $10.000 worth in luxury prizes for the amateur division. BALI ROAD TRIP Off the beaten track , through small whinding roads, we ventured to the black-sandy beaches of Tabanan and the sea-side temple of Tanah Lot.

his time we strolled down the road of Petitenget towards Batu Belig on our motorbikes, aiming for the beaches of Tabanan. The journey to the lower plain was pretty smooth—no, we’re not talking about the road condition here, provided that we only topped at 60km/hour under the glaring midday sun. The wind was with us then, sweeping and cooling our skins, helping us to enjoy the surrounding views mostly comprised of villas set amongst the rice fields.

Passing Canggu Club, in an area called Banjar Tegal Gundul, the pace of life seemed to slow down. We could only see houses with no people around; of course, with the occasional motorbike and/or car passing by. But then as the road led us to the main stream, which is a bigger lane directing to Kerobokan, all the sudden heat of the sun was striking hard on us. It was probably only autosuggestion due to the many vehicles on the road. Yet, we continued the journey; and this time, we went a little faster at 80km/hour or so, at least that was what my speedometer said. We don’t recommend speeding, though.

As the sun was rising higher on top of our heads and a sign board that said “Echo Beach” was appearing some twenty meters ahead of us, an image of an ice-cold beer bottle started to fill my head. I then pointed to Andri on his motorbike behind me to make a left-turn to the beach. Only within minutes from that main road, there we were, sitting, facing the somewhat raging ocean as its waves were hitting hard on the concrete wall and landing soft on the sitting-free area’s floor. Certainly, each of us had a bottle of ice-cold beer in our hands. Perfect! Echo Beach itself is largely popular among the expatriate community in Bali. Though you can’t swim here, because of the rips, the small strip of the beach-side restaurants is very pleasant if you feel like having a lazy midday accompanied by cold drinks and nice meals. Anyway, it was funny how this restaurant that we sat in put catchy lines on a blackboard: “No shoes…No t-shirt…No problem. No happy hour, only happy endings!” We really couldn’t help but laugh hard, reading and re-reading the lines. We got back again on the road after spending around an hour in Echo Beach. Being back on the main road, we made a quick stop and looked at each other while thinking, “We’re on motorbikes! Why on earth should we take the main road?”. And so we took the immediate left-turn and traveled down the smaller roads behind the rice fields.

Entering any left-turn in this area will lead you to a black-sandy beach, which from stories heard, has a very strong association with spiritual activities (like ceremonies) in Bali. Anyway, through the narrow, bumpy roads behind the rice fields, we visited several blacksandy beaches that are actually interconnected with each other. However, each of these beaches is given a different name in referral to the name of the village where it sits. Almost in all of the beaches that we visited, we could spot the remnants of ceremonies scattered around on the black volcanic sand. We asked the locals why many rituals had taken place, but no one seemed to give us our required answer.

BALI ROAD TRIP of the road by the rice fields. We were surprised to see this; it was like a refugee camp, but we soon learned that the tents were only up during the harvesting season. Different areas of the rice fields were in different stages and it is interesting to see the ripening crop next to a section of young shoots.

Although, we have to say, the beaches are nothing to shout about; yet, joining the villagers sitting in a warung gazing at the waves was fun. The villages in the area also provided different attractions to enjoy. We visited the black-sandy beaches that belong to the villages of Pererenan, Seseh, Cemegi and Nyanyi. These villages are renowned for retaining the traditional Balinese lifestyle; thus, resulting in breathtaking natural, traditional surroundings. It was harvesting season when we were there; and the villagers were all busy yielding the harvest, at around five in the afternoon, and looked like a wavy, golden ocean. Tents were set up along the sides

So, we got back to the main road and headed for Tanah Lot â&#x20AC;&#x201C; a Hindu temple that somewhat sails the ocean, and probably the most photographed place of interest on the island. Though sunset is really stunning at Tanah Lot, it can be crowded. So, for the early-birds among us, it might be a recommendation to visit this tourist sight in early morning. THE MAG

he Balinese had already owned their belief and culture since thousands of years. The stronghold of their religion and traditions may be the main factor that enables them to preserve their culture from the outside influences. Religion is in inseparable from everyday life, from the simple daily rituals to big temple festivals. No opportunity is lost to worship God in an unending series of ceremonies that stretches from birth up to after death. Mantras are also chanted endlessly, screaming out hopes and prayers to the sky. Om Shanti Shanti Shanti would likely be the most heard, for the phrase acts as the opening and closing of all prayers.

Om itself is used to address the highest being, the almighty God Sang Hyang Widhi Wasa, to whom all of the hopes are directed to. Although in general the word means peace, Shanti is chanted thrice; it’s not for emphasis, but because disturbances are of three distinct categories. In Sanskrit, these are referred to as adhi-daivikam, adhi-bhautikam and adhyatmikam. Adhi-daivikam literally means 24

"mental disturbances that come from God"— i.e. things that are utterly beyond our control: hurricanes, earthquakes, tsunamis, etc. So the first Shanti means, "O God, may we be protected from these obstacles that are beyond our control." Adhi-bhautikam means "disturbances that come from the world." That means anything stemming from the world around us — noisy neighbors, barking dogs, family arguments. As opposed to the first category, we have some control over this second category of disturbances. So this Shanti means, "O God, may we be protected from the people and surroundings." The third type of disturbance is the most powerful and, at the same time, the only one which we have total control of. Adhyatmikam means "disturbances stemming from the self." This third Shanti is therefore the most important one, because even if we are free from outside disturbances, if the inner realm is not calm we will never know peace. Conversely, once we have found inner peace, no external force can ever disturb us. So chanting this third Shanti is akin to praying, "O God, please remove all the inner obstacles." In addition to that, “Shanti, Shanti, Shanti” has recently been made as Bali’s new branding tag line. The phrase is considered to speak and represent the island as a highly spiritual place best. Also, the richness of Bali’s belief system and cultural diversities are all nicely symbolized within the triangle logo that goes together with the phrase “Shanti, Shanti, Shanti”.

What are your short-term and long-term goals? Our mission is to save wildlife from extinction and to prevent the animals from cruelty. We want to save wildlife from commercial exploitation and inhumane treatment and as well as educating and increasing public awareness about wildlife conservation. Has your organization made (or is making) any progress in achieving its goals? And have your actions made any significant change in line with the goals and missions of your organization? Yes, we have and keep on making progresses in achieving our goals. Especially for ProFauna's branch office in Bali, we have action plans as followed:

PROFAUNA ACTION PLANS IN BALI • Campaigns and public awareness The campaigns include lobby, exhibition, demonstration, petition, and law enforcement. ProFauna always encourages the police to strictly curb the illegal trade of the sea turtles and other endangered species in Bali. It is expected that the programs will be in cooperation with the Forestry Department and the Customs. Therefore, ProFauna will distribute leaflets and use other media to campaign against the trade in airports, travel agent offices, and shopping centers, informing the tourists not to buy the souvenirs containing protected animal parts. • Education Programs Previously, ProFauna held education programs at schools. Starting in 2009, ProFauna will expand the targets for the education visit. They will include schools, youth organizations, and fishermen groups. • Sea turtles conservation program in beaches of Kuta and Klungkung Since 2002, ProFauna has been working together with Kuta beach security guards (known as satgas) on the sea turtle conservation programs

on Kuta beach. The conservation programs include saving the nesting sea turtles, relocating the eggs, and releasing the hatchlings. The programs have become a role model for the sea turtle conservation project and a unique foreign tourism attraction. For 2009 - 2011 ProFauna plans to: a. Expand the programs to other beaches in Bali which are potential as the nesting beaches for the sea turtles. It is expected that the programs are not only run in Kuta and Tegal Besar beaches but also others. ProFauna targets another beach to run the sea turtle conservation programs on by engaging the local people.

b. Repair the hatchery facilities in Kuta and Tegal Besar beaches including the information boards of the sea turtle conservation programs. • Animal Market Monitoring Every month, ProFauna will monitor the animal market in Denpasar to record the numbers and species of the protected animals and hand the data to the rangers in order to encourage them to enforce the law or conduct confiscation operation on the protected animals being illegally traded.

It all started with an unplanned holiday, when Arjan and his parents were ‘accidentally’ visiting Bali in August 2001. Of course, just like normal visitors in a holiday destination, Arjan and his family did some shopping. No, they didn’t shop for some souvenirs; they bought a piece of land in Nusa Dua instead. This seemed to be a regular, fun, family holiday time turned out to be a lot more serious business. With no alarms and anything else, Arjan and his parents decided to move to Bali…just like that! One thing led to another; on April 2007, Arjan took over Mykonos, a Greek restaurant (also the very first restaurant) in Oberoi.

Why did you go to Bali in 2001? Actually my parents and I were planning to go to Phuket in Thailand for our holiday. Yet, Phuket was seriously packed at the moment that we finally decided to just go somewhere else. Bali is, of course, the perfect option; even though the island is located not very far from East Timor, which was in a serious unrest situation years back. What is the best memory about that trip? I was only 14 years old back then. But I could still clearly remember that the people in Bali were so different from the ones in my country. The Balinese people were so friendly and nice even to strangers. Well, they still are! What was the best hang-out place back then? I remember this seafood restaurant that I think was very nice; it’s not in Jimbaran, though. I think it should be somewhere in Tuban area, but I can’t really remember. It was very cool, because I felt like being in a grocery store instead. You know…where you can just pick your items, put them in a cart and stroll away. Of course, the items would be kinds of fishes and other seafood stuff. After that, you can deliver all the items to the restaurant’s kitchen and have them cooked in a way that you wish. It’s good though, because I think Bali needs them. Yet, I really think that whatever these investors are doing in Bali, they need and have to do it in environmentally friendly manners.

Is there anything you miss about the old Bali? YES! I remember a big building somewhere on the Bypass area heading to Nusa Dua. It wasn’t really a temple or anything like that. It’s funny how the building has disappeared just like that. I pass the road everyday, but I still can’t find it! Do you know anything about this building? Or was I just hallucinating? Anyway, I don’t think I have anything that I really miss in particular. I mean, the Balinese people still practice their traditions and everything; and I really love it! What made you decide to move here? The hospitality services in Bali are great; no matter where you are from or how old you are, you will be treated nicely here. Yet, what astounded me the most is when I see this row of houses of worship near my place in Nusa Dua. There, I can see a mosque, Catholic and Protestant churches and a Hindu temple standing next to each other harmoniously. Tenganan is charming with its fascinating authentic traditional festivals such as MekareKare, a ritual which is a duel between two young men armed with two pieces of thorny pandan leaves on the right hand and an armor made of plaited rattan on the left. Not only that, the people of Tenganan are skilled in the unique technique of weaving, known as the 'double ikat' cloth, where the belief in the magical power of the fabric is essential in bringing out the beauty of the cloth. Tenganan owns huge tracts of fertile and well cultivated lands capable of satisfying the needs of the village. This village, located near Candidasa, is of a long rectangular shape, which is laid out in tiers, with wide stone steps in between. The houses are constructed out of bricks with no outer layer covering them. Visitors are welcome to step into a number of houses there to see a villager while weaving the ikat and/or making the basket. The best thing is thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s no pressure for every visitor to buy their products.

Many call Cabe Rawit as a warung; and it seems to us that the concept only applies on the restaurant’s price range (items in the menu starts at IDR 6,000).

We didn’t try all the food items when we had lunch there. However, from what we ordered, we could tell that the spicy taste of chili played quite a major role in the food served there. The name Cabe Rawit (small, green firecracker chili) should explain it, though. Anyway, this restaurant is perfect for those enjoying hot and spicy food. If you are curious on how Indonesian food tastes like but cannot bear with all the thick spices, then you might need to tell the staff about it while having your order there. Looking at the menu, we learned that Cabe Rawit actually also serves western meals – although the range is not as varied as the Indonesian meals. Also on the menu were traditional Indonesian and international breakfast meals served from 8 am–11 pm. Of course, we tried some dishes that according to the staff were the most craved in

the restaurant: Martabak Telur (savory minced chicken omelet in crispy wrapper), Baby Back Pork Ribs (300gr) and Sambal Matah. The Sambal Matah was probably the most ‘kicking’ one. It came with fried chicken (you can also choose fish or shrimp), showered with raw chilies, lemon grass, shallot and came with plain rice. The dish could literally burn your mouth; yet, its rich flavors were so inviting that you couldn’t stop. To cool it off, we tried Es Campur (assorted fresh fruit and fermented cassava topped with condensed milk and ice cubes). It tasted refreshingly sweet.

n the famed Legian street, lined with surf shops and clubs, sits a quaint romantic spot offering delicious and alluring Mediterranean food, promised to please your appetite and an atmosphere hopefully winning the heart of your significant other. Many would be mistaken to say that Nero was a new establishment with its dark stone flooring, cozy romantic lighting and wooden tables, yet Nero has been standing strong in the same location for the past 9 years. Although in its 9 years, Nero Bali has been through 3 renovations to appear as it is now. The bar is situated on the right side as you enter Nero, a pleasant place to rendezvous as you await your partner to arrive or wait to be seated.

Smoked Bali Salmon Carpaccio Swordfish Steak al Mediterranea

With a wide variety of dishes available, we sampled the most popular dishes Nero had to offer and a few of the chef’s favorites as well. For appetizer we were presented with a large plate of Thai Shrimp Salad (mixed garden salad, alfalfa sprouts and boiled shrimps, topped with balsamic-lemongrass-paprika dressing), Assorted Plates of “Meze” which consisted of small plates filled with dips, chesses and many other assorted small dishes. The most surprising was when the chef brought out Smoked Balinese Salmon Carpacio (slices of Balinese smoked salmon, lettuce, tomatoes, capers, fresh lemons, topped with balsamic vinegar dressing). I never new Bali could spawn salmon, but the chef revealed his little secret, which brought light to my query, but I have promised to keep the chef’s secret (sorry folks!).

The main courses we got to enjoy were Spaghetti alla Marinara (mixed seafood, blended tomato, herbs and white wine sauce), Penne topped with 4 Italian Cheeses (Parmesan, BlueCheese, Riccota, Peccorino and herbs) which was such a cheesy delight (pun not intended), and Swordfish Steak al Mediterranea (200gr swordfish steak, lemon—virgin olive oil dressing, accompanied with steamed veggies and boiled potatoes) which was cooked to perfection. Just thinking about the meals makes my mouth water again. To quench your thirst, Nero provides a wide variety of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. Confused by many choices, I ordered the houses special, simply titled Nero Sunset, an icy, refreshing and colorful alcoholic beverage. As full as we were, dessert was offered to us in the form of fried doughnut pastry topped with honey, ice cream and nuts. All meals were presented in a beautiful and stunning way, which in a way made us guilty to eat these small pieces of art. If you’re searching for a beautiful romantic atmosphere with great food to match for that romantic get together with that special someone, Nero Bali, is a must go for all starry eyed lovers.

A Park that Breaks the Knot

Your love will end right here! This park is a nightmare for happy couples. Unlike any

other parks in general where people can sit relax under the shades of trees, Lila Wulangun Wongan Park bears

a mystery that will affect (only) to lovers. It is said that couples visiting this park would end up breaking up with

each other shortly after; and it takes only one visit for

the magic to work. Lila Wulangun Wongan is located eastern of Jl. Gatot Subroto in the outskirt of Denpasar.

Years ago, the locals (mostly couples) in the area used the

park as their weekend recreational retreat. Each couple would then find their own little corners where they could

‘express’ their feelings towards one another. As love was

high filling the air and the lovers were all carried away, these couples (who were all Hindus) started to neglect

the area’s temple. No offerings were made, no prayers

were ever conducted. Again, this is Bali, an island thick with religious and superstitious beliefs; and ignoring a temple? Whoa, that’s a HUGE deal!

It seemed like the gods weren’t pleased with the behaviors of these lovers. Thus, there came the so-called

curse: love will end in this park. Local stories confirmed

the myth, which probably explain how deserted the park is currently. No couples had ever been seen in Lila

Wulangun Wongan since then, only a very few scattered

visitors (from outside the neighborhood) visit the park now and then. Of course, you can always choose to believe it or not and might want to give it a test. Anyways, we’ve warned you!

You can get these magazines and books in places like Double Six beach, Bintang Supermarket and Poppies Lane – of course, the price is a lot lower than the latest copy (and you can still bargain!). Not only that, magazines and books in various languages are generally available; just ask the seller to get one in your language, then he/she will get it for you. It’s cheaper…it’s greener.

If youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re with kids, buy them traditional toys

Forget about the fancy toy stores if you want to make your children happy while holidaying in Bali. Instead, head to the nearest souvenir shop and get the colorful kites or the Harley Davidson miniature made from wood. Aside from the uniqueness of these toys (provided that they might not be available in your home country), you can always bargain the price.

Check for discount coupons

Several hotels and/or villas in Bali provide their customers with discount coupons for several amusement services like shopping, spa treatments and many others. Several tour operators also provide the same thing. You might need to check if your hotel or tour operator provides you with these coupons. Never miss breakfast in your hotel

This is a very good idea, especially because you are paying a complete set of meal for the price of a single main dish. Rustica, a fine Italian restaurant down at Batu Belig Street, frequently holds a dinner buffet when customers can eat as much as they can for a very low price. The fine Italian cuisines ranging from the appetizers, mains and desserts served could also be a great escape if the local food finally got to you.

Stock up on snacks

You might as well want to stock up snacks and beverages (alcoholic and non-alcoholic) in your room. Go to any supermarkets or Circle Ks to get these supplies, which will help you to avoid consuming snacks and drinks at excessive rates from your hotel.

Drive your own vehicles

This tip only applies for those who own driver’s license. Driving a car (or riding a motorbike) on your own while exploring the island could be so much fun and give a different kind of satisfaction if compared with hiring a driver. In fact, in case you don’t know your direction, getting lost in Bali offers a priceless experience – you might end up in a beautiful place that is not listed within any tour guide print-out. If your hotel offers breakfast, then it is good – make sure that you don’t miss it! Having the free breakfast in your hotel, which is normally completed with fruit platter, will give you the energy (and make you full) to carry on exploring the island. General cases occurred if you miss your breakfast are: you’d be stopping at a deli to get a sandwich at brunch time; within an hour or two, you’d be looking for a restaurant to have lunch because you normally feed your stomach during that time. Brunch time can be skipped if you have breakfast in your hotel.

Spend low and get high

With the increasing alcohol prices (also due to its shortage), having a sip of local alcohol as an alternative could turn out to be as delightful, yet cheaper. Variants ranging from beer, wine and arak (spirit) are widely available in bars, restaurants and shops at tourist spots like Kuta, Seminyak and thereabouts. The island’s bars and restaurants have also innovatively transformed the local arak into blends of tasty cocktails (still in low prices, of course).

You need to shop a lot!

Please don’t get the statement wrong; what we mean is: shop a lot and get discount (a lot too). This is a good thing to do especially if you want to buy some souvenirs to be brought home. In order for this thing to work, you should go to a shop that has everything (like t-shirts, shorts, wood handicrafts, etc.) and make a one-stop shopping. Of course, you need to bargain first and make a deal with the seller. Tell the seller that you are buying a lot so you can get more discounts.

Food for Thought It always amazes me how the beach in Double Six is always busy. When trashes were mounting last year in December, some

people were still willing to trouble themselves being in the middle of disturbing smell only to sunbathe, play racket ball and beach

volley. Only the surfers were absent during that period. Anyway, I frequently asked to myself (actually, I still do!) why this area is

always busy like this. I thought the restaurants in the little strip of the area played quite a role. Then again, a lot of visitors choose to

just eat from the traditional carts ON the beach. Of course, for me, it’s the food that makes this area crowded. But not the one sold in the restaurants or traditional carts…

I spent quite a lot of time going to Double Six area: the restaurants, the beach, the bungee jump, sometimes the clubs too. Today,

when the beaches of Kuta, Double Six and Seminyak are ‘safe’

from trashes, locals and visitors alike are more eager to spend time playing with the waves or just simply lying down on the sand.

Double Six, certainly, is one of the main destinations. I couldn’t help but notice the behaviors of these people. After getting tired from

doing whatever they are doing, these people tend to grab a meal or drink wherever: restaurants, Circle K shop, and beach drink sellers. Those who don’t really sweat a lot

would also go for their own ‘meal’ to feed their thought, not body. They would head to the restaurants direction, but for the motorbikes selling second-hand books that are parked in front of them.

Again, it amazes me how these book sellers have

actually more complete collections than any of big book shops in Bali. The books range not only from

different genres, but also languages. I stopped by at

the one in front of Lanai restaurant; the guy who sold the book was in an extreme busyness catering his

multi-national clients. He ran here and there to his stocks and only within minutes, he returned with

piles of Japanese, Russian, French and English books in his hands. Wow! I know the books are secondhand. Yet, novels, fiction stories and the like are

never out of date. The fact that the books are still in good shape and sold in seriously a lot cheaper

price makes them sound so yummy – even more ‘delicious’ than the real food sold in one of the restaurants there.

Bargaining in Bali 1. No matter how much the vendors give as the opening price, you have to bargain for as much as half (or even less) of the price. 2. It is better for you to go to the shop that has everything: t-shirts, shorts, wood handicrafts, etc. By doing a one-stop shopping, which means you will buy quite a lot, it is easier for you to get a bigger discount. 3. Since there are ranges of shops offering pretty much the same things, you can always walk away from one shop to another if a deal cannot be reached. But walk slowly. Normally, if you offer a reasonable price on a bargain, in which the vendor can still make some profits and the price is good for you, the vendor would call you back to his/ her shop as you walk away. 4. Try not to be not so apparent that you really want the thing you are looking at on a shop; the vendors are not stupid and can smell your desire, thus will take the advantage by putting the price high. 5. Tell the vendor that if he/she gives you a good price, than you will tell your other friends to shop from him/her. 6. Know the martket prices, or, pretend you do. By saying “I’ve seen this product before much cheaper” will probably lead to a cheaper price. 7. Have fun and stay friendly. Bargaining is part of the culture and it should be a fun activity.

Surfspots in Bali A Medewi Medewi is a perfect fun wave for all surfers. Come early to avoid onshore winds. The swell is generally smaller than at Kuta spots. B Balian Balian gets some swells and is a quiet place in north Bali. Its location that is close to the main road makes surfers can easily access this place. C Canggu & Pererenan Canggu and Pererenan are places that most surfers will know about, with their larger than Kuta swells, sandy beach and not much else. Canggu however is becoming better known in tourist and expat circles. D Kuta Reef Kuta Reef is an exposed reef break that is often working. May – October (Dry Season) is the best time of year for waves here. E Belangan The reef in Belangan is close to shore and a short paddle out. Belangan is a very well-known break and can get very crowded in the peak season. F Dreamland Dreamland is famous for its waves that can peel perfectly for hundreds of meters over the reef. The waves are also reserved for expert surfers only. Swimming here is advisable only on low tide. G Bingin Bingin gets very crowded through the peak season with only one small take off area. The wave itself is pretty mechanical, but short.

K Uluwatu There are 4 different sections at Uluwatu: 1. Temples which is a long and hollow wave that works on the mid to high tide. 2. The Peak right in front of the warungs in line with the cave also best on the high tide. 3. Racetrack is a super fast with a barrel that works on the low tide, but gets seriously shallow. 4. Outside Corner is considered by many to be one of the best waves anywhere in the world. The corner won’t even start to break unless the swell is at least in the 8’ range. L Nyang-Nyang Nyang Nyang beach is known as one of great spot to surf in Bali. Hiding from the crowd of the people plus big and huge wave makes this beach like a secret paradise for the surfer. M Green Bali Green Ball is situated at the bottom of a cliff. No worries going down but after you have been surfing for a couple of hours the return leg is a bit harder. N Nusa Dua To get to this reef you have to drive in to the town itself and then weave your way south, there are a couple of other good waves in this area also, so it pays to do a bit of exploring. O Sri Lanka North of Nusa Dua is Sri Lanka, a bowly right, which breaks into a deep water channel. P Sanur Reef Sanur Reef is a sheltered reef break that only works once in a while. November - April (Wet Season) provides optimum time of year for the waves.

H Lebih The surf break in Lebih is greatly affected by direction of the swell.

Q Padang Galak Padang Galak is a reliable rivermouth beach break north of Sanur. The surf break is quite popular here, but only works under certain conditions.

I Impossibles Impossibles is the least crowded surfing area in Bali. It is located between Bingin and Padang Padang, so if you are at either of those two places you can see what is happening at Impossibles.

R Ketewel The surfing crowd at Ketewel usually consists of locals and Japanese, including girls on body boards. Ketewel seemed like a place beginners/intermediates might enjoy, not people looking for epic surfing.

J Padang Padang Padang Padang only starts to work when a big swell is running. It is of an easy paddle out through the channel.
