Team’s Note Hey guys!!

The currently very lively Bali feels even livelier in our The
Mag Team as a new member has joined in on board. He is Bartele Santema, the Bule Gila (crazy Caucasian). Moving away from Jakarta, Bartele is now in Bali to share his insane yet hilarious experiences and ideas to you guys (page 24).
In this edition, our super hip Mr. Randy Wartold is sharing us his experience on the run - no, not with his cool black Harley this time (page 38).
We are tourists for a day! And so we hit the road
in our cool Baru di Bali car and headed upper
the island to check out places and spots that give
the real glimpse of Bali such as the Penglipuran,
a traditional village in Bangli. Continuing our ‘cool-
breezed’ tour, we went further up to Kintamani for the Lake
Batur and Besakih for the Mother Temple of Besakih. On
th

the way home, we made a stop at the Tirta Gangga Water Palace and the Bat Cave. See full story on page 14.
Having enough with the cool breeze from our day-tour, we went for the sun in the Kuta Beach. There, we met with
sisters from Austria who were pouring their hearts out with The Mag about their first visit in the island. See what they have to say about Bali in Faces of Bali at page 36.
We headed to a corner near the beach of Seminyak, an area that most visitors normally wouldn’t directly notice, Jl.
Drupadi. We visited La Sal (page 42) and Sorriso (page
44), two restaurants that are bringing their international culinairy creations to a former rural area.
Girls and their shopping drive…Yep, thanks to the ladies of
The Mag, we have more of our favorites listed in our Bali Faves (page 18, 22, 28, 34).

Fiesta
10/10/08 - 14/10/08 In a while, Bali is overwhelmed by all kinds of festivals and activities, like the Kuta Karnival, the Food Festival, Asian Beach Games, Film Festival, and more...
The 2008 Ubud Writers & Readers Festival (14-19 October) with the theme of Tri Hita Karana (the Balinese concept of balancing Man, Nature and God) once again is delighting the visitors with literary excitements. Taking place in the enchanting Ubud, both readers and writers from many parts of the world will enjoy the views of rice fields and coconut trees while having their inspiring readings and discussions. Discussions circling on the topics of society, religion, politics and culture from a literary perspective are in the Festival’s main program with four days of panel sessions. Other writing-related workshops are also held, such as travel writing, writing for the media, editing and publishing, memoir writing, short story writing and novel writing.
2008 Ubud
Writers & Readers Festival
The non writing-related workshop is also offered to adult visitors who are interested in learning more about the culture of Bali as the host. The children can also have fun in the festival through its popular children’s workshop program. Through this program, the children can learn about the Japanese Manga Cartooning, How to be a Radio Presenter, Setting Poetry to Music and Story Writing using Wayang Kulit.

When Tripping the Island
Don’t hesitate to make a turn when you are on the road everywhere in Bali. It is within these turns that you might find something that is not listed on any of the tour guide print-outs. Be worried not if you get lost for the road connections in Bali are very simple and will for sure lead you back to, at least, Denpasar ;)
But, for this period, we cannot complain either. With the Nusa Dua Fiesta, we can experience a four-day celebration of culture and art, with many performances, games, contests and exhibitions. This event, arranged by the Bali Tourism Development Corporation (BTDC) will be centered at the Peninsula Island.

brought its Seminyak’s pleasant presentation to the next level by setting up a new stage at the restaurant’s second floor. To inaugurate the new stage on Monday (Sept. 1) was a big name from Jakarta, Bertha, when she entertained the customers with her husky, golden jazzy voice accompanied by the highly talented band members delivering the smooth sounds of trumpet, guitar, bass and drum. The restaurant’s second floor setting was somewhat turning into a concert arena, where people were not only sitting 12

Live Jazz performance is held every Monday night at Ryoshi starting from 9 o’clock up till midnight. The smooth sounds of the Jazz go perfect in the company of the house’s smooth Sake – hot or cold. To go together nicely with the Sake are also the house’s sashimi, tempura, sushi, mochi, teppanyaki and robatayaki. Reservation is highly recommended on Monday night.

The Mag • Bali Trippin’
We continued our journey up the northern part of the island to Batur Lake, the largest lake in Bali with scenic views and cool atmosphere. This lake is considered as sacred because it is believed that the Goddess of Lakes, Ida Batara Dewi Ulun Danu, lives in it. From where we were standing, up on a winding road after Kintamani, we could see the stunning view of the lake lying on the slope of Mount Batur and the villagers farming the crops at the edges of the lake. You might want to note down that Batur Lake (Kintamani) is another heaven for hawkers in Bali. Thus, prepare yourself for some massive attacks from these aggressive vendors offering you t-shirts, shorts, sunglasses, key chains, wooden chess set, fruits…oh, they have it all! You can find a peaceful up onto the road leading to Besakih and observe the beauty of the lake in between trees. The spirit of Galungan was so thick in the air, and so we carried on our road trip to the Mother Temple of Besakih. Sitting on the western slope of Mount Agung, Besakih is the biggest and most important temple for the Balinese Hindu. It consists of a

Goa Lawah large complex of temples extending up the mountain, over a distance of 3km; which also means that a lot of walking and stair climbing are required if you wish to explore the whole complex. But don’t worry, for numerous drink sellers and warungs (small eateries) are lining outside the complex to serve you with water supplies and/or snacks. For your information, Besakih has a system of temple guides. You will be offered to have a guide to take you touring the whole temple. You can, however, avoid having one of these guides if you have a native Balinese with you.
barudibali.com/island-biker-tours We got back to our car and consulted our map to see what else is around. We spotted Tirta Gangga on our map, and so off we went there. Tirta Gangga (which means holy water of the Ganges in Balinese) is a Water Palace that encompasses romantic gardens with natural springs flowing from beneath an ancient Banyan tree and holy temple. Also sits in the garden, an eleven-tiered lotus fountains that has been the symbol of the place since it was first created by the late King of Karangasem in 1948. It is said that if one bathes in the waters of Tirta Gangga on the full moon you will be blessed with lasting youth and your illnesses will be healed. On the way home we made a stop at Goa Lawah (Bat Cave), some 10 kilometers east of Klungkung, which is also the home of one of the most scared temples in Bali, Pura Goa Lawah. As said on its name, Goa Lawah is inhibited by thousands of bats hangin down on the ceiling and flying around. The cave itself is also believed to channel the area to Mount Agung, but of course with many obstacles: a holy python snake (Naga Besuki) and the thousands of noisy, long-nosed bats.

A
side from the widely-exposed traditional dances, music and religious activities, Bali still holds a number of other charms that are not yet reaching many of the ears of the visitors. These charms might come a little bit far from the chic and exclusive settings of Seminyak and the vibrant sounds and lights of Kuta. Well, they don’t really need any fancy settings; in fact, some dirt and mud are the perfect elements for them. Mepantingan, a Balinese traditional fighting style, is held in (popularly) rice fields where the fighters will do some aggressive slams in the knee-deep mud for two rounds of five minutes. The arena is usually of 5 x 5 meters. Kicking, punching, leg sweeps, eye-poking, scratching, groin hits, biting, hair pulling, spitting and profanity are not allowed in this game. The next fight is a pretty more serious affair: Perang Pandan, a fight in which the fighters are equipped with thorny Pandanus leaves. This fight is held in Bali’s Tenganan area, one of the several ancient villages in the island. Each of fighters needs to beat, scratch and hook the thorns from the leaf to the opponent’s body till it bleeds. Perang Pandan is actually a ceremonial fight held by the Balinese in celebrating what is called with Usaba Sambah on Sasih Kelima or the fifth Balinese month.
barudibali.com/well-being-spa
Blood or even lives are also involved in this next fight, but not the ones of humans’. Cockfight, and its close association with gambling, is an illegal practice in many countries including Indonesia. In Bali, however, cockfighting is also a part of religious practices, as it required at temple and purification ceremony. There are ancient texts disclosing that the ritual has existed for centuries. The blood of the loser spills on the ground, an offering to the evil spirits. Only men can participate, women are not even allowed to watch.

“This is our first time visiting Bali, and we love it! Yeah, we heard about this island from our friends who’ve been here before; and so here we are now, on our three-week stay to experience Bali ourselves.” “Bali is verrrryy beautiful. We love the people, the nature, the culture…we just loovveee Bali. Oh..and of course, the temples too, they are magnificent! We’ve checked out several, like the one in Uluwatu, Tanah Lot and a couple of others. Yea, they look pretty much the same, but different temple gives a different feeling when you actually visit them.” “We were wondering when we saw a ceremony for the first time: ‘is this something real or just a show?’ I mean, look at those Balinese people, they all look so pretty and dressed up…especially with all the fruits and stuff they put on top of their heads. To us, they look as if they were going to perform at some show somewhere. It’s really amazing; we don’t have anything like this in Europe. Again, we loooovveeee Bali!” “We think, Kuta is the best! We can have everything only within walking distance. The beach is perfect to sunbathe. Don’t get us wrong, we love other areas in Bali too. Yea, we love the beach in Padang Padang, the view is very beautiful there. It’s just Padang Padang is too quiet for us.” “Yeaaa…we spotted a guy with his helmet on inside of Circle K. It looked pretty weird to us, because…you know, it’s pretty hot here. I can’t imagine myself being that guy with the helmet on and the heat and stuff. But it’s always nice to see this kind of thing when you are on a holiday.” “It’s also funny, actually, that many locals don’t really go to the beach only because they don’t want to turn dark. I saw a lot of whitening cream on sale, and that’s also a pretty weird stuff for me to see. I mean…hey, I love being dark.” “Another thing… we love Mixwell in Dhyanapura A LOT! It’s a really nice place to hang out.. The crowd is awesome!”

Once a huge expansion of paddy fields, Bali’s Seminyak is nowadays taking a large part in entertaining the visiting tourists with the currently existing rank of fine restaurants on the ‘Eat Street’ in Oberoi and bars and clubs on the ‘Drink Street’ in Dhyanapura. Chatters from the restaurants and loud beats of music from the bars and clubs have so far enlightened this once sleepy hollow into one of the busiest, noisiest and most crowded areas on the island. Yet, in between the two different hypes in Oberoi and Dhyanapura, there is still a blank spot. It is Jl. Drupadi, a road that has to date not much described while it actually links both the Eat and Drink streets. But, be worried no more, for Jl. Drupadi has now started to show its existence and take part in amusing the visitors with some of the best Bali dining and drinking experience. The lights have been turned on, the tables are all set up, and the show would soon be started. Yes, Jl. Drupadi is the next ‘star’! Contributing a notable role in shaping Drupadi as the ‘future of Seminyak’ are La Sal and Sorriso, two restaurants that offer convenience and delight for those seeking fine dining-drinking establishments. The Mag didn’t want to miss being a part of this future plan; and so we drove off to Drupadi...
Stepping into La Sal, you will feel like you have actually crossed the borderline out from Bali to the Spanish territory. The restaurant’s romantic garden courtyard hosts the outdoor barbecue corner where customers can directly observe their meal being prepared; the courtyard also has tables set with wooden lantern hung on the trees. The main building is of typical Ibizan white color and an open plan for spaciousness and roomy feelings. Out of the many tempting, wonderful Spanish dishes listed on the menu, we picked Tuna Pâté and Patatas Bravas as the appetizers and Chuletón a la Pieda con Patatas Ibiza y Ensalada Mixta as the main dish. To clear our throats and wash the food down, we went with Clericó Fizz White Sangria. The Tuna Pâté, which is also the house’s signature, was excellent. The crispy potato slices with the turnover from the tuna meat-filled sauce gives the sense of festivity. The Patatas Bravas was another

ff we went out again craving to feed our starving body and soul; this time, we headed to this not much described street of Drupadi in Seminyak, a road linking the ‘Eat Street’ in Oberoi and ‘Drink Street’ in Dhyanapura. We made our stop at La Sal, a Spanish Restaurant & Lounge, a dining spot where the food is various and prepared in a way that highlights the ingredients instead of the vaunted skills of an egotistical chef.

huge blast! The potato chops with sweet and spicy sauce were a serious business both for our tongues and tummies. We even cleaned the lasting sauce on the plate with the house-made warm, soft bread. Yummy yum yum! Our main dish, the Chuletón, was superb! The prime rib steak was cooked medium – to fit our taste – and so soft. The potatoes Ibiza with cheese sauce and mixed salad accompanying made the steak tasted perfect. The Clericó Fizz White Sangria flew us away to the skies of Spain. It was the best white wine punches we’ve ever tasted in Bali. On the whole, if you’re in the mood for tapas and paella, La Sal is certainly the place to go. Off the beaten track on a quiet stretch of rural road, this restaurant and lounge will for sure be an ideal spot for everyone to unwind while enjoying drinks and food.

probably the best way to dine and spend your time in Sorriso. Being really on the side of the street, with only one or two cars/motorbikes passing by, is for us a splendid way to have our wines. However, a comfortable sitting area with comfortable sofas and a plasma screen is also on site for a more ‘lazy’ mood. Chatters in Sorriso are made merrier with the presence of Baby, the owner, who will most of the time be seen hanging around greeting her customers and checking if everything is OK in a cheerful, friendly way. The dishes in Sorriso are of course as pleasant as the restaurant’s atmosphere. We had the Spiendini alla Romana as our appetizer. It was a wonderful

mozzarella skewers with anchovies sauce. For the main dish, tried the house’s signature, Conchiglioni al Sorriso, which is of baked pasta shell with ricotta, spinach, gorgonzola cheese and bacon topped with bread crumb. The Conchiglioni was very smooth, with all the cheese and spinach melted altogether. Baby finally came to our table after we had finished with our dinner. And as we guessed it before, with her presence amongst us, our table became quite noisy with non-stop laughter. It was very nice. The friendly and experienced staff of Sorriso together with Baby’s hospitality and, of course, the food, Sorriso is a definite worth for a visit. “Yeah, I really hope that more and more places will
O
ur next stop was Sorriso, an Italian restaurant that has just recently opened its doors for the visitors and residents of Seminyak. Sorriso’s bright, golden setting is surely a catch and can’t-miss in the dark Drupadi Street where it is located. The restaurant’s dining area is of an open plan with a bar occupying the central part.
open soon in this area. It’s always good to leave the customers with choices. Well, Drupadi is not a bad area anyway,” Baby told The Mag.

Carrying the burden Strolling down the streets of Seminyak and Legian, Christo and I suffered this severe headache only to decide on where to relax for a couple of beers – a place where we could spend hours to drink and probably have dinner too after a long, hard day of work. We couldn’t come up with an idea; the many choices of venues offering different atmospheres and everything all of the sudden became too many of a burden for us. Our heads became so heavy, we didn’t know why… The sun was almost setting. Christo and I finally decided to just go to Kuta, lying down on the beach to kill the time, hoping that eventually a name of a spot popped into our head – a spot where we could sit our tired minds and cool them off with cold drinks. There I was, lying on the white sand of Kuta Beach, Kristo was playing with his camera…and there was this woman, Ni Made Toya, persuading us to buy one of the accessories she sells. Ms. Toya was bringing lots and lots of accessories: big bunches in her two hands and another big pile on her head. She has been on the beach for the past 25 years, selling the accessories everyday starting from 9 in the morning up to very late in the afternoon, fighting with direct heat from the sun, in hope to make only a little money.
barudibali.com/bali-mystique
From what we observed, she was not only carrying the burden from the physical weight on her head, but also the mental burden inside her head. Christo and I work in an airconditioned room to protect us from the sun. We love the sun and the way it colors our skin dark with its natural crayon. Ms. Toya doesn’t really like the sun. She covers herself with as many clothing as possible to protect her from the ‘evil’ sun. She doesn’t have other choice. We bought something from Ms. Toya. Christo and I are happy persons now.

Dear FaceBook.
... opinion
So I’m getting emails alerting me to several “friend requests” but I can’t log on. The download/logon to FaceBook on this remote island is so slow that I could die from necrotizing fasciitis before I get anywhere. Why can’t you guys be as fast as Google? Or half as fast? And you know what, you guys set it up to make us FEEL GUILTY. That’s right, that’s the secret of your success, some name from the past (and believe me, to a recently graduated high school senior like my son, his classmates are the *past*) is all of a sudden in the present, right there in our inbox, and we feel GUILTY AS HELL if we don’t respond, which widens the net, and makes us feel even more guilty as others contact us. I’ve heard that the secret of your success is curiosity, that people want to know what others are doing. It’s not. It’s GUILT, and a sense of I’m-breaking-a-social-rule if I can’t accept friendships RIGHT AWAY. SO PLEASE BEEF UP YOUR BANDWIDTH or whatever is need so that people in my situation, with Wonka Willy internet connections, can NOT FEEL GUILTY ANYMORE. I succumb to you, oh great FaceBook, but if I can’t log on, then the hell with it. Cheers, Richard 48

Kuta hawkers
Many consider them as their worst holiday nightmare. These hawkers are offering the tourists and other visitors their services in a way that they think is persuasive – a way that, unfortunately, others out of their world tend to see as aggressive. Many travel advisories give out warnings to travelers to be aware with these hawkers, with some even advice that tourists arm themselves with weaponries to defend themselves. Too much. The best weapon to defend yourself from any of the ‘attacks’ from these hawkers is actually very simple: a smile. Should any of them causes you inconvenience, it is advised that you say no to them in a friendly manner in order not to make them becoming more ‘persuasive’. If you are friendly to them, they will be friendly to you, even though you are not buying anything for them – simple mathematics. These ten Kuta lady hawkers listed on the next pages are the faces that you would probably encounter when you are relaxing in the long stretch of Kuta Beach. barudibali.com/papas-cafe

Bali is divided into 8 regencies (Badung, Bangli, Buleleng, Gianyar, Jembrana, Karangasem, Klungkung and Tabanan) and 1 city (Denpasar).
