EDITOR'S NOTE
Ho ho ho… Now that Christmas and New Year are approaching, Bali is seeing more and more visitors coming to the island. Yep, nothing can be more exciting than welcoming the holiday season. The current uncertain weather condition, however, makes it hard to predict whether or not Bali will celebrate a wet Christmas and New Year this time of year. Raining or not, we are sure that you will feel the joy being with beloved ones in this beloved island. For this issue’s Feature Story, we visited the villages of Palasari and Blimbingsari in West Bali, where Christmas is the holiest day on the calendar and classic Christmas carols echo from homes in this Hindu-dominated island. Certainly fit to be made as a model for religious tolerance, these two villages are where to go if you feel like celebrating Christmas in a traditional Balinese style (see page 30).
Rahajeng Nyangre Natal & Wanti Warsa Merry Christmas & Happy New Year
Since Bali is going to be packed this December up until early January next year, we drove to the island’s southeast coast in search for an escape from the crowd. Little did we know that this area actually houses one of Bali’s most beautiful virgins called Blue Lagoon (see page 38). During the way we also learn about a traditional dagger that possesses magical power that allows it to fly or move by itself. See the story in our Believe It or Not section (page 20). Our other regular columns are still here, so happy reading! And enjoy Bali too! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, everyone.

BALI FLASH
Going Slow to Set the Mood Fast, fast, fast! Gee, you’re trying to take it easy but everybody is trying to get you on the fastest boat to the Gili’s. Well, maybe you don’t want to get there fast… maybe you just want to relax and enjoy the trip at the wide stretched see. Well, Blue Water Cruises thought about that. Starting December 1st, Alii Kai is sailing the waters between Bali and Lombok with absolutely no rush whatsoever. The trip from Bali to Gili takes 9 hours, which should be enough time to enjoy the motion of the water and get totally relaxed on this large traditional wooden schooner. Large pillows and the sea breeze are included! One way tickets are Rp 680.000 and Return 1.290.000. To book, please contact Blue Water Cruises (081 7343 168) or visit Explore Bali on Jalan Laksmana.
Once in a Blue Moon Kuta is closed for New Year Don't worry; it's not all of Kuta that’s going to be closed, but only several roads heading to the area— that is on the afternoon (normally before five o'clock) of this coming 31st of December. People from outside Kuta will need to walk if they wish to go there for New Year's Eve. The road along Kuta Beach, which is normally jammed with cars and motorbikes, will be full of people getting ready to celebrate the last night of the year, even before the sun goes down. Trumpet, mask and balloon sellers will be everywhere along the road – making noise and creating a happy atmosphere. Several stages will also be put up on the beach area, where a number of entertainment events, such as live music, will take place. If you are staying within the Kuta area, you might want to get up early in the morning on January 1st 2010 when you can breathe the fresh, unspoiled air due to the absence of motorized vehicles on the previous day. However, if you're afraid to miss it, then better to not go to sleep at all and party the whole night ‘till the morning comes (see page for the ten spots to spend your New Year’s Eve). 16
This New Years Eve, December 31, 2009, provided the skies are clear, revellers will be able to witness the rare phenomena of a blue moon. Blue moons are the second full moon to occur in one calendar month and generally only happen once every two and a half years. Just another reason to get out there and celebrate the sign of good things on the rise in 2010.
Lights Out
The rolling power outages that have been taking place across Bali periodically since September will now continue throughout the holiday season. State owned power company, PLN, hoped that the six-hour plus blackouts, which happen sporadically in each village, town and city in Bali, would be eliminated by early December. PLN now states that due to a delay in the delivery of spare parts to the Gilimanuk power station, the blackouts will continue until at least January 15, 2010. Here’s hoping that your Christmas isn’t a black one.

Babi Guling
Given that there’s a Babi Guling (suckling pig) stall on just about every street corner and in every village in Bali, it’s not that difficult to conclude that this particular Balinese dish is somewhat the island’s shared passion. In fact, a lot of Balinese families are still keeping pigs at home behind their house, feeding the pigs on food scraps for that important time when they will be killed and eaten. What makes Balinese suckling pig so special is that it had been stuffed with herbs and spices and cassava prior to roasting over an open flame, making it so full of flavor. The meat is still rightfully tender; and the meat is only the start of it. There's the oily crispy skin, and the delightfully crunchy fried skin. Yet, aside from its ‘humanely’ tastiness, Babi Guling seems to mean a lot more than just a simple signature food of the island. A number of important Balinese Hindu rituals also require the presence of this particular dish as the offering to appease the Gods and spirit of ancestors. Now, we challenge you to be adventurous enough to once in a while leave the Seminyak’s convenient fine-dining scenes and head to a Babi Guling stall instead. You might like it, or not. Either way, you’d be experiencing a true Bali holiday.

BELIEVE IT OR NOT
Keris The widespread tales that a keris (a traditional dagger)
possesses magical powers that allow it to fly or move by itself,
even inside a locked cupboard have fascinated many. Therefore, many superstitious keris owners will conduct sacred rituals to
wash or ‘bathe’ their keris during certain auspicious times such as the first month of the lunar year or full moon. The mystical
powers of keris themselves are said to come from their celestial
origin due to the use of meteorite iron.
The making of a keris is preceded by ceremonies, offerings,
and magical spells to strengthen its supernatural powers. During the Balinese kingdom era, warriors often made
offerings on shrines for their keris. It is even said that the
king of Klungkung saved his kingdom by using his sacred
keris against the great eruption of Mt. Agung in 1963. Legend
has it that by pointing his keris skywards, the king was able to cut off the flow of the hot lava, leaving his area untouched.
The powers of the keris extend to preventing fires, deaths,
agricultural failures and many other problems. Likewise, it is believed that they can also bring great fortune, such as
bountiful harvests. Furthermore, keris can have tremendous
killing power. Some are rumored to stand on their tips when their real names are called by their masters. When making
one, the empu (spiritual person who makes keris) can infuse into the keris any special spiritual qualities and powers the
owner desires.
Today, magical keris are often passed down from father to
son, or sold in antique shops where they eventually lose their powers if not attended to and treated with reverence. Keris without supernatural powers are also sold in a number of
souvenir shops around Bali. We’re not sure, however, if you could bring a keris with you to your home country because
keris are generally considered a weapon and may be illegal in some parts of the world.

RACING FOR LOVE …AND COFFEE! Balinese men’s infatuation with sporting events involving fowl has gradually turned into a gentler kind. Although cock fighting is still unfortunately practiced in villages across the island, the Balinese men of Griya Anyar (a village on the outskirts of South Denpasar) have traded the brutal excitement of the cock fight for something much more ‘compassionately’ entertaining; pigeon races. Unlike pigeon races practiced in western countries, the breed of pigeon used by the Balinese is not necessarily the specially trained, racing breed, but rather ordinary Balinese pigeons. And apparently, the only rule applied to this game is the law of opposite attraction, where the male pigeon will race to get to its designated female counterpart. Yep, it seems like ‘love’ is the driving factor behind the flapping wings of the males.
" The Balinese men of Griya Anyar (a village on the outskirts of South Denpasar) have traded the brutal excitement of the cock fight for something much more ‘compassionately’ entertaining; pigeon races."
Each team of competing contestants consists of two Balinese men, a male pigeon and a female pigeon. One Balinese man stands on the start line to release the male pigeon while the other man stands on the finish line, flagging the female. Losers have to buy the winners a good cup of Balinese coffee and whatever else is ordered from the a la carte menu of the nearby warungs (eating stalls) or bakso (meatball soup) carts.

A Mystic Ride into the Sunset
Bali Island Horse
Tabanan’s sparkling black-sand beaches could turn mystical, especially during sunset time. Due to this mystical aspect, these blacksandy beaches are used as the ground for many Balinese Hindu ceremonies. More to the point, the countryside views and scenes of the local people doing their sunset activities along the shores make a priceless, picturesque observation. Now imagine yourself watching all of this, slowly moving and changing angles without having to make an effort as if you are watching a three-dimensional show. Imagine no more for you can now enjoy the whole breathtaking vista live…and in a much more amusing way! Yep, horseback riding through the sunset while taking in the pleasure of the surrounding natural and cultural beauty will certainly make your Bali holiday
memorable. Be worried not, because Bali Island Horse will arrange everything for you. Aside from the wonderful sunset ride Bali Island Horse can also take you touring during the day to the neighboring beautiful Balinese villages. This unique tour will allow you to have a close glimpse into village life, where culture and tradition entwine along the small paths, past the traditional family housing compounds, home industries and the friendly smiling faces of the Balinese. The location of Bali Island Horse’s stables, which is at the seaside village of Yeh Gangga, is bustling with rice farming, fishing and sea salt harvesting, and so provides a glimpse of the real Balinese way of life. Island Horse’s friendly guides and well-trained horses will assure the safety of this pleasurable experience.

A ROYAL BLEND
PRINCESS JERO ASRI KERTHYASA This month we speak to Jero Asri Kerthyasa, a woman with a life story that reads like a fairy tale that most women would only dream of. Born to a middle-class family and raised in Australia, Ibu Asri (formerly named Jane Gillespie) met her future husband, Prince Tjorkorda Raka Kerthyasa of the Sukawati royal family of Ubud, on a vacation to Bali in 1977. A year later the couple were married and Jero Asri became the first foreign-born princess to become a member of the Sukawati royal family.

Can you tell us a bit about your background before you came to Bali? I was born in Singapore, but grew up in Australia, and in my former life in Australia I was a pre-school teacher. What brought you to Bali? The first time I came to Bali was for a vacation with some friends in 1972. I later came back in 1977 on holiday with my mother, and that’s when I met my husband. How did you meet your husband? I was staying in Ubud next to the Lotus Café, and just behind was Tjorkoda’s family temple. Tjorkoda was always there doing the Barong dances, and working with a group of children that he would take around to do performances. As a schoolteacher I loved children, so that brought us together. Was it love at first sight? Well…more like love at second sight (laughing). It took about a week before I knew I really I liked him. We got married a year later in 1978. What did your family think when they found out that you were going to marry a prince? My Mother had already met him and knew that he was really just a nice guy and not too ‘princey-princey’, and my father was in the Army and worked for the government, so he was used to meeting foreign dignitaries and VIP’s. So neither of them was very star struck. I suppose some of my friends were more in awe of the whole situation. Did you choose to change your name or was it something that was required of you? Actually, the family changed my name and I wasn’t even aware of it until after the fact. Jero is a title given to an outsider who marries into the palace, or someone from an outside caste. Asri means perfect.
How did Tjokorda’s family react to his decision to marry a foreigner? His family was less enthusiastic than mine, and in the beginning there was a lot of opposition to the marriage. They wanted him to marry within the royal family, and so at first there was a little hostility and some of his family members wouldn’t speak to me. How did the Balinese community react to the marriage? Some people accepted me, but others would say to my husband, ‘Why don’t you get a real (Balinese) wife’, so I guess you could say there was a bit of subtle subterfuge going on there. Was it difficult to adjust to life as a princess? I guess the biggest challenge was not having a choice about doing certain things, for example having to change my religion and my name. After a while that really began to bother me. I thought ‘Why do I have to change everything about my life. It’s not fair! You have two sons & one daughter. Do they have any responsibilities as members of the royal family? Yes, they still have a lot of responsibilities, roles, and expectations, particularly for ceremonies, but they also still have to work. You’ve recently opened Biku, a restaurant and teahouse in Seminyak. How did that come about? Our eldest son Adam is a tea master, which means he had to learn the different tastes and blends of tea. I love tea as well, but I found it hard to find a good cup of tea in Bali, so I wanted to create a place where people could enjoy high quality tea. Any plans for the future? I’d like to build up Biku a bit more, and use more products from Indonesia. At the moment we have a number of really great teas from Java, and chocolate as well. I really want to showcase what Indonesia has to offer. But as for another hotel or restaurant, no – I think this is it. You know I’m not really into empire building – I just want to do one thing and do it really well.

Freshly killed pigs, highly decorated penjor (bamboo poles) and the traditional Balinese costumes of sarong, kebaya and belt for women and udeng hats and double sarongs for men are the order of the day.

Already from seriously spic-and-span streets of Palasari, classic Christmas carols echo from the homes, each home with its religious symbol of the cross depicted in brickwork above the door. Today the two Christian villages are surrounded by both Hindu and Moslem communities. Rempug claimed that the region should be made as a model for religious tolerance, pointing out that people of differing religions shared their jungle village homes with respect and friendship. “Despite of our differences, we get along very well. There is no such thing as religious intolerance here,” sweet Tuntun said. “This kind of harmony is exactly what we expect as our Christmas present. If only we could beautifully wrap it, we would certainly send it to everyone on Christmas day.”

hijs van Harte of Holland and his twin brother Sjaki, always dreamed about setting up an organization to help children in Indonesia, as their mother was Indonesian, and they both felt a connection to the country of their ancestry. When Thijs and his wife Karin’s youngest daughter Tari was born with Down Syndrome, they became aware of the high quality of education and services for mentally disabled children in Holland, and saw an opportunity to bring this type of resource to Indonesia, and in particular, Bali. After the death of Sjaki in 2002, Thijs and Karin pushed ahead with the vision and dream of opening a foundation for mentally challenged children in Bali and in 2005 Sjaki-Tari-Us was born. In 2006 the first centre was established in Selat, in the north of Bali and in 2007 the Ubud centre opened its doors. “In Bali there are special education programs for children over seven years of age, but nothing for younger children,” said Marieke Nijland, director of education and learning programs at Sjaki-Tari-Us, Ubud. “Our goal here was to bring the Dutch knowledge about special needs children, but to integrate it with the Balinese culture and way of thinking. We really try to look at what the Balinese people need and what will work here.” Heart of Bali Currently Sjaki-Tari-Us works with eight www.heartofbali.org Balinese teachers who are trained in special Brought to you by Baru di Bali, needs education by a team of highly skilled THE MAG and selected partners The Heart of Bali is a Bali-based Dutch volunteers. "We don’t just look at the person’s disabilities; we try to look for the possibilities in each individual. Everyone has possibilities, hence our motto ‘not less, but differently gifted." Programs are based on play-learn groups where the children are encouraged to learn in an active way, using pictograms, sign language, and games aimed at motor development and social interaction. Marieke explained, “Our main goal is to guide and encourage each person’s individual development and independence. We don’t just look at the person’s disabilities; we try to look for the possibilities in each individual. Everyone has possibilities, hence our motto ‘not less, but differently gifted’. We believe that people have to be stimulated to develop their talents.” Sjaki-Tari-Us also has special programs for teenagers, including the newly opened Sjaki’s Warung at the Ubud centre where students learn how to cook meals and serve and host customers. In this way the young adults can learn real-life work skills in a safe environment. “Our hope is that after the teenagers become comfortable here, they can move on to a regular job in the community,” said Marieke. “Maybe they won’t be employed full time, but at least they can participate and contribute to the community and gain self confidence in their role in society.” 36
In the future Sjaki-Tari-Us plans to organize workshops in art, dance, music, and cooking for the public, which will involve the teenagers at the centre, and in approximately five years the directors hope to transfer the foundation over to the Balinese staff, making it a community-based, independent Balinese organization. As the foundation is a non-profit organization, all funds raised are used for training purposes and for developmental materials at the centre. Donations and sponsors are greatly appreciated. Donations can be made at any Permata Bank in Indonesia under the name Luh Mertasari, account number 4100679561, swift code BBBAIDJA.

GETAWAY
Bali's Virgin Beauty
Blue Lagoon We are now going to tell you a story about a local virgin beauty that is so intoxicating that one glance can take your very breath away. But first, a disclaimer: anyone expecting to read a dirty story should stop reading now. The spectacular splendor we’re telling you about is exactly the kind that makes Bali a blissful paradise and a quiet and peaceful escape away from the stresses of everyday life. This beauty is named the Blue Lagoon. If you cross the strait to Lombok from Padang Bai Ferry Port, you will see this small bay with it’s pristine white sand and clear blue water. Simply looking at it from the deck of the ferry could send tingles down your spine, let alone actually stepping foot there. The absence of hawkers and other distressing vendors will surely have solemn sun worshippers making this place their holiest sanctuary.
38
While Blue Lagoon is renowned for its easy diving, experienced divers in the know also thoroughly enjoy the site. There are only two warungs (eating stalls) selling the catch of the day, food and cold drinks. You have to bring your own sarong to lie on the beach because, unlike the popular beaches in Kuta and Seminyak, there are no sun beds or umbrellas to rent at Blue Lagoon. Blue Lagoon is located near the Padang Bai Ferry Port. You can call us sly, but we’re not going to give you details on how to get there. If you are at the port you can simply ask the locals for directions. And please - don’t tell too many others about this uncorrupted hidden gem.

FORTUNE COOKIE CHINESE RESTAURANT
40
lthough only three months old, Sanur’s newest eatery has a long running history in the area. Fortune Cookie began its journey in Sanur seven years ago as a simple Chinese food delivery joint. After serving the Sanur area for almost a decade, the previous owners decided to close the doors for good. Luckily, one dedicated customer and Chinese food aficionado decided to step in and take over. When long time customer Nupi heard that the business was closing she decided not only to take over the small restaurant, but to do a complete overhaul of the menu, space and philosophy behind Fortune Cookie, with some help from her down-to earth partner Marcello.

Broccoli and Cashew
Chinese Dumplings
Black Pepper Beef
Marcello explained, “Coming from San Francisco I grew up surrounded by Chinese food. When Nupi took over this place we decided to take those popular American-Chinese dishes and recreate them here in a healthier way, for example using no MSG and only fresh, healthy ingredients.” A perfect example of the new and improved healthy menu is the Broccoli and Cashew dish, a heaping bowl of crisp, green, organic (when available) broccoli tossed in a light, savoury sauce and sprinkled with crunchy cashew nuts. The Black Pepper Beef stands out for its thin slices of beef tenderloin stir-fried with thick wedges of juicy green and red pepper and flavoured with a fragrant cracked black pepper and soy sauce.
For those who like it spicy, the Kung Pao Chicken is a sure bet with bite-sized cubes of succulent chicken breast, sliced onion and green pepper, roasted peanuts and a double dose of heat with slivers of fresh and dried chillies, all tossed in a tangy Szechuan style sauce. Each meal is served with complimentary fortune cookies, made in house, thus producing a thin, sweet, and crunchy cookie, lacking the heaviness or dryness that many mass produced, pre-packaged fortune cookies tend to have. Nupi and Marcello also completely redecorated the small, but open and airy dining room with dark wooden tables and chairs, silk placemats, a large, bubbling fish tank full of lively goldfish, and elegantly painted Chinese characters on the wall, creating a truly Asian feel to the space. Even the delivery service has been revamped. Nupi explained “We still deliver to villas, offices and hotels in the Sanur area, but we’ve switched our delivery packages to simple Chinese takeaway cartons made of earth-friendly, recyclable material, and we never use plastic bags.” With customer’s health and the environment in mind, a sleek new look, and plans to expand delivery and dine-in options to other areas in South Bali, it’s clear that the future of Fortune Cookie is looking bright. Go Green In Bali Bali is a beautiful island to visit and like many other tourist destinations, being such a popular spot brings many problems. One concerning problem that we at The Mag have come to notice is the ever growing environmental problems that effect this paradise island. We at The Mag hope that all travelers will take (little) time to read these points and take them to action, in order to lessen the damage. So please, keep Bali Beautiful.
1. Refill your water bottle
6. Eco-travelling
2. Please don’t litter
7. Lights out
Instead grabbing a new bottle of mineral water, why not keep that bottle and refill it. You can refill for free, in some places such as JP's Warung Club in Dhyana Pura.
It’s a habit we should all try to keep, and that is just “don’t litter”. If no trashcan is in sight, just keep it in your bag or pocket until you come across one, and then dispose of it correctly.
3. See some rubbish, pick it up
Add that little extra part in keeping Bali clean by picking scraps of trash ignorant people have discarded carelessly and then find the appropriate place to dispose of it.
4. Reuse or refuse plastic bags
Sometimes shops will still put your goods into plastic bags. It’s ok to refuse the plastic bags, if you’re carrying your own. You may get a strange look from the cashier, if so; just explain your trying to "Keep Bali Beautiful!”
5. Walk more!
To keep the air of Bali cleaner, it’s always better to walk. Other than being a healthy alternative, you may accidentally stumble onto a small store or unseen bar which you may have missed.
52
What better way to enjoy the beautiful scenery of nature in Bali than to take an eco-tourism tour. Many companies provide trips into the untouched wilderness of Bali, or the unspoiled coral reefs.
Leaving your AC on is a huge waste of valuable electrical energy. It’s better to turn off your AC and lights before heading out.
8. It’s better to go out for dinner
It is sometimes tempting to take-away food to enjoy in the comfort of the place you are staying, but the packaging of the food adds up to the pile of trash that is thrown away.
9. Support local industries
Sending imported goods uses up much of the worlds fossil fuel resources, compared to using products already available in Bali. By supporting local industries we can also improve the economy for the community in Bali.
10. Water preservation
The amount of clean water in Bali is slowly becoming scarcer due to over use. Small things we can do to help over come the water crisis are by taking shorter showers and turning of the taps when we brush our teeth.

MAMA'S GERMAN RESTAURANT

o you’re escaping the cold, European winter and find yourself in Bali around Christmas time. However pleasant this is, you might miss your mother’s home cooking, cozy restaurants and hearty meals that you’re used to. If you do, MAMA’s German restaurant is the right place to visit this December. There are hundreds of different, classic German dishes and beverages available, many of which are only to be found in certain German regions and nowhere else. MAMA’s, an authentic German restaurant is located in our very own Legian; making it easy and pleasant for German food enthusiasts in Bali to satisfy their cravings.

Bavarian Meat Platter
Rouladen
German appreciation of healthy, thoughtfully prepared food served with care is well known. Thinking of German cuisine as only a mix of beer and sausage would be an unforgivable simplification. German cooking will impress anyone who loves to have a hearty, homecooked meal. In fact, some of the world’s favorites such as meatloaf, hot dogs and hamburgers hail from this country. MAMA’s restaurant obviously understands this. The name of the restaurant itself is, to us, very inspiring. It might sound a bit cheesy, but we believe that nothing can beat the wonderful taste of food prepared by our beloved mothers. Furthermore, MAMA’s menu extends to the Mediterranean, Indonesian cooking, steaks and grilled specialties as well. From what it says on the menu the international dishes sound yummy, however, we were at a German restaurant so we obviously couldn’t go for something that wasn’t traditionally German!
Look at the size of the beer!
Sampling a few of the delicacies offered on the menu, we started the meal off with an appetizer of the Bavarian Meat Platter, a meat and cheese platter mixed with a variety of sliced cold cut sausages and two sorts of cheeses. Our main dishes were the Bavarian Style Meat Loaf with an egg on top; served with homemade sauerkraut and pan fried potatoes and the Two Beef Rouladen, thinly sliced beef rolled and pan fried served with homemade sautéed red cabbage and mashed potato. These dishes were awesome and MAMA’s laid-back and pleasant setting made everything even more marvelous. Many already know this great restaurant and MAMA’s cafe is seriously packed at dinner time; so we advise you to make a reservation if you are planning to eat during peak dinner hours. But whenever you want to feast on a hearty meal prepared ‘just like home’, MAMA’s is there for you 24-hours a day, which makes it an ideal spot for people with late night cravings. Selamat Makan!

BARGAINING IN BALI 1. No matter how much the vendors give as the opening price, you have to bargain for as much as half (or even less) of the price. 2. It is better for you to go to the shop that has everything: t-shirts, shorts, wood handicrafts, etc. By doing a onestop shopping, which means you will buy quite a lot, it is easier for you to get a bigger discount. 3. Try not to be not so apparent that you really want the thing you are looking at on a shop; the vendors are not stupid and can smell your desire, thus will take the advantage by putting the price high.
BEFORE ENTERING A TEMPLE, PLEASE REMIND YOURSELF: 1.To respect the place and its people: it is sacred, so do not make noise or damages and act normal. 2.That a woman who is having her period, is not allowed to enter the temple. 3. To not walk in front of a praying person.

4. Since there are ranges of shops offering pretty much the same things, you can always walk away from one shop to another if a deal cannot be reached. But walk slowly. Normally, if you offer a reasonable price on a bargain, in which the vendor can still make some profits and the price is good for you, the vendor would call you back to his/her shop as you walk away. 5. Tell the vendor that if he/she gives you a good price, than you will tell your other friends to shop from him/her. 6. Know the martket prices, or, pretend you do. By saying “I’ve seen this product before much cheaper” will probably lead to a cheaper price. 7. Have fun and stay friendly. Bargaining is part of the culture and it should be a fun activity.
4. That a priest is very important, so whenever he is praying, don’t sit higher then him and don’t bother him with your flash from your camera. 5. That you should also not take flashing pictures of other people praying. 6. To wear a sarong and a ribbon when you attend a ceremony (those are often provided to you when necessary).

Bali Barrels
T
here are many reasons to visit Bali; amazing culture, friendly people, great cuisine and beautiful locations. But this is not all the island of the gods has to offer; there are also fantastic waves breaking around the whole island. From beach breaks to barreling reef breaks, Bali has attracted surfers from all over the world since the sixties for good reason; the island is a surf mecca. The south side, ‘the Bukit’ has barreling left handers rolling past the cliffs and consistent trade winds blowing every day from April till October. All along Kuta beach there are fun beach breaks for beginners and advanced surfers alike. North of Kuta offers playful lefts and rights all year round and there are some amazing, barreling rights to be found on the east coast. It is always hard to explain to non-surfers why surfing is such an amazing experience and why surfers travel all around the globe to devote their life to chasing waves. When you paddle for a wave, when it picks you
up and you feel that the wave is taking over, it’s such an extraordinary feeling. When you surf you’re being pushed by an energy developed kilometers away, an energy about to reach the end of its journey. The happiness you feel when you or even your friends get a good ride, that’s unique. So for anyone who has never surfed and would like to experience this feeling, you’re in the right place. All you have to do is to go to one of the many surf schools in Kuta, get out there and catch your first wave. Kuta beach is one of the best beaches to learn to surf in the world! Just be sure to respect the rules so you won’t endanger yourself and/or others. For the surfers who are reading this; rainy season has started which means that the trade winds have stopped blowing consistently. We’re are going to have to settle for fewer swells and early morning surfs. The upside of the rainy season is that there are usually fewer people in the water, however surfers still seem to flock to popular spots like Uluwatu and Canggu. So for those of you who want to get away from the crowds and have the time to travel a little further, go east and have fun. Alissa

Bali Surfspots Medewi Medewi is a fun wave for all surfers. It can be a bit fat, but has its day. Come early to avoid onshore winds. This spot handles bigger swells also. Balian Balian is a swell magnet and a quiet spot in North Bali. This break is getting more crowded as more accommodation is build daily. Its playful lefts and rights are great for beginners and advanced surfers alike. This spot doesn't like bigger swells. Canggu & Perenan Canggu always gets more swell than Kuta beach. It actually consists of a few different breaks; The right breaks better on a mid to high tide and is a great performance wave. The sandbank is better on a lower tide and is in front of the restaurants, it's fun to watch the surfers hit the lip whilst enjoying the delicious food. Canggu is becoming a very popular tourist spot, the sunday barbeque gets more packed every week. Kuta Reef Kuta Reef is an exposed reef break that is quite consistent. There are a few breaks here: Airports rights and left, Middles and Kuta reef. MayĂ?October (dry season) is the best time of the year for waves here. It gets crowded due to its close proximity to Kuta. Belangan Belangan is known for its longs peeling walls. It does get sectiony, so you have to race a bit. Belangan handles big swells and can offer good barrels on the right direction. On the wrong swell direction, it tends to close out. It's a beautiful beach, great to spend the day! Dreamland Dreamland was famous because it was a 'dreamy' spot, with the building of 'New Kuta beach' the dream became a nightmare. A beautiful green cliff made place for concrete jungle, the worst example of socalled progress. The wave is still there, a nice
peak and a fun beach break. There's a great shore break on a bigger swell, where many a tourist has lost their top or bottom (or almost drowned...) Bingin Bingin is a consistent, mechanical barrel machine. It's a short wave with a very small take off spot so if hassling is not your thing, it will be quite hard to get waves here. Impossibles Impossibles gets fun on a big swell. Its located between Bingin and Padang Padang, if you are sick of dealing with the crowds at either of those two places you can paddle to Impossibles and get some long walls. Padang Padang Padang Padang only starts to work when a big swell is running. It offers an amazing barrel but breaks in front of trocks, so experts only! It is an easy paddle out through the channel and one of the world-class waves in Bali. Uluwatu There are 4 different sections at famous Uluwatu: Temples is a hollow wave which works on the mid to high tide. The peak can offer a nice barrel and is right in line with the cave. Racetracks is the low tide section, it's superfast and gets seriously shallow. Outside Corner is an world class wave which won't even start breaking unless the swell is at least in the 8 foot range. Nyang Nyang Nyang Nyang beach is a 'secret' spot, it's not very easily accessible which it's why it's usually uncrowded. This beach is like a secret paradise for every surfer. Green Ball Green Ball is a left and a right, situated at the bottom of a steep cliff. No worries going down but after you have been surfing for a couple of hours the return trip is quiet challenging.
Nusa Dua To get to this reef you have to drive into the hotel area itself and then weave your way south. There's no channel which makes getting caught inside on a big swell quite annoying. There are a couple of other good waves in this area so it pays to do a bit of exploring. Sri Lanka In the northern part of Nusa Dua lays Sri Lanka, a bowly right which breaks into a deep water channel. This break is better on a bigger swell but is shifty. Sanur Reef Sanur Reef is a right and considered another world class wave. It's the local break of many expats and locals so gets very busy. The wave breaks better on a mid to high tide and is usually better in the early morning or in the rainy season (November-April). Padang Galak Padang Galak is a reliable rivermouth beach break north of Sanur. The break is quite popular, but only works under certain conditions. Keramas Another well known wave, which received a lot of media attention the last few years. It has a nice barrel after take-off which turns into a wally lip. This break is very popular with visiting and local pro's and if you don't want to deal with them in the water it is nice to watch them surf from the warung right in front of the break. Padangbai Padangbai has the flat bottomed mixed reef and sandy bottom with some wally waves. This break needs a bit of swell. Kuta Beach The warm water and sandy bottom make Kuta beach one of the best places in the world to learn to surf. Also for advanced surfers this beach is very popular, you can often see the locals busting airs on the punchy lefts and rights.

Kuta/Tuban/Legian Kuta Kuta is dedicated to those seeking fun and sun in affordable ways. The area consists of busy laneways lined with bars and restaurants, basic accommodations and various stalls selling multitudes of items. Although often considered the ‘absolute ugliest’ area of the island due to its mixbag tourism projects in combination with rampant commercialism, Kuta still manages to retain a slice of Balinese charm. The smell of incense wafts down the crowded gangs and offerings of brightly colored flower petals are laid out each morning to appease the gods.
Legian The current Legian is packed with venues that turn this used-to-be sleepy hollow area into a spot that knows no rest with almost non-stop activities and crowds. More and more amusement centers like nightclubs, restaurants and shops are now making Legian a vibrant area that never sleeps. Tuban Being a part of Kuta, Tuban doesn’t really share the loud noises and crowds of Kuta’s main party scenes. Villas and fine restaurants in this area are not really seen from the main road as they mostly take place beachside.

Seminyak/ Petitenget/ Canggu Seminyak Owing to its high density of upscale shopping, combined with the clustering of many fine-dining establishments, Seminyak has rapidly become one of the most wellknown tourist areas in Bali. In addition to a few commercial strips with popular and lively restaurants, bars and good crafts, furniture, and antique shops, there are a few notable establishments that have earned numerous titles as the best venue or party spot in Bali in various magazines. Land and accommodation prices are amongst the highest in Bali and plenty of luxury spas and hotels abound.
Petitenget & Canggu Petitenget is where the chic ambiance of Seminyak continues. Although recently there have not been as many happening scenes as in Seminyak, emergence of a number of new stylish venues in Petitenget should indicate that this area would serve as the extension of Bali’s southern fashionable playground. Canggu, on the other hand, is where the ricefields are still widely spread and clearly seen, even due to its close proximity with Seminyak and Petitenget. A number of luxurious villas can be found within Canggu area – most of them are blessed with the tranquil view of the ricefields.

Sanur/ Jimbaran/ Nusa Dua Sanur
One of the most pleasant aspects of Sanur is its large expanse of beachfront. A footpath that covers about five kilometers allows visitors to casually stroll and explore, stopping when they feel like it for a drink or snack at one of the many beach side restaurants. A large reef shelters Sanur’s white-sand beach, resulting in low-key surf that is ideal for beginner surfers and families with small children. However, swimming is only possible at high tide as low tide exposes the reef. Wellstocked bars and decently priced food and drinks have turned this area into a popular nighttime destination as well.
Nusa Dua
Some of the most luxurious hotels in the world find their home in Nusa Dua. Yet, unknown to even some of its loyal visitors, Nusa Dua actually offers more than just ranks of five-star hotels and up-market restaurants and shops. For instance, the thousands who stay in the luxurious hotels within the Nusa Dua complex and Tanjung Benoa are largely unaware of a beautiful white-sand beach located just five minutes away on the southern edge of the peninsula, named Geger beach. Immediately north of Nusa Dua enclave is the peninsula of Tanjung Benoa that includes less exclusive hotels and Benoa village. As a mixed culture area, visitors can see a mosque and Chinese and Hindu temples in close proximity.
Jimbaran
Although Jimbaran now houses some of the finest luxury hotels in the world, its original color as a fishing village still remains. Unlike many other coastal areas in Bali that have wholly converted from fishing villages into tourist spots crowded with umbrellas, hawkers and surfboards, Jimbaran exploits its natural potential as a fishing village with the establishment of row upon row of seafood restaurants serving that day’s catch of fresh fish and crustaceans. Jimbaran is now known to be a haven of the finest seafood (both raw and processed) in Bali. THE MAG

Nusa Lembongan Nusa Lembongan is one of Bali’s three small offshore islands (the other two are Nusa Penida and Nusa Ceningan) with tourist infrastructure; thus making it a popular destination for visitors to Bali. Lembongan is a destination to experience the abundance of marine life, coral beds, drop off walls and exhilarating drift dive. Lembongan’s white-sand beaches and clear water are just perfect for visiting sun worshippers. Unlike most beaches in Bali, there are no hawkers in Nusa Lembongan, with the sole exception of the boat guys who wander along the beach in the morning and ask you if you would like to join the snorkeling or fishing trips. Getting to or from Nusa Lembongan is easy due to the numerous options. From Sanur, visitors are provided with several fast boat services as well as the traditional jukung boats (wooden boats). Alternatively, travelers can depart from Benoa Harbour, any of the Gili islands, or even charter their own helicopter.

The Gilis Lombok’s three sister islands of Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air are currently amongst the top alternative destinations for tourists visiting Bali. The three are tiny coral-fringed islands blessed with white sandy beaches and crystalclear water swarming with an array of coral fish. Known as budget stopovers in the old days, the Gilis with their rapidly increasing popularity now have diversified accommodations ranging from luxury villas to rustic yet chic bungalows for rent. Oceanfront restaurants and bars are also scattered around. Water activities, of course, are some of the highlights on the must-do list during a stay in these islands. Each Gili has its own character and charm; Trawangan is known as the party scene, Meno is very mellow (perfect for honeymooners) and Air’s ambiance falls somewhere between the two. The three islands, very fortunately, are pleasantly
free from air pollution due to the absence of motorized land vehicles. Transportation means vary from the traditional cidomo (horse-drawn carts), horses and bicycles. However, it’s important for you to note that the Gilis are homes to Muslim locals. Although bikinis are tolerable, it is advised for you to avoid any excessive skin displays – including public affection displays. You also need to tolerate the loud call for early Morning Prayer at around four or five in the morning. Restaurants and bars will run as normal during the fasting month of Ramadan. The Gili islands are easily accessible direct from Bali with the current fast boat services available. Ferry services from Padangbai to Lombok run 24 hours a day. Morning flights from Bali’s Ngurah Rai Airport to Lombok’s Selaparang Airport are also available daily.
