Tonight is New Year’s Eve and everybody knows that it is party time! We bid farewell to 2015 and all its joys and disappointments, but we know that the focus of tonight is not about saying goodbye but about greeting and ushering in 2016. So put on your best dresses, ladies. Slip on that pair of glittering stilettos that you secretly bought some months ago and embrace the vibrant atmosphere that will engulf the island from its most urban nightclubs to its most rural community hall. Be merry and bask under the fireworks, light works, or simply close your eyes and move with the music or the sounds of Kuta’s crashing waves. Tomorrow morning when the music has died down, don’t forget to sit quietly and reflect upon where you have been in 2015 and where you want to head to in 2016. Happy New Year! ---The Editor

Street celebration “Masked dancers highlight the opening of Denpasar Festival” Words and photos Agung Parameswara

Around 100 dancers donning a variety of colorful masks highlighted the street parade Monday afternoon that kicked off Denpasar Festival. The masks added a modern twist to the performance’s mostly traditional interpretation of Tantri, a renowned local fable collection. The frame narrative was an apt opening act for the city that had just elected its new mayor since Tantri comprises tales of political greed and its dire consequences. The annual festival enters its eighth year this year and showcases the city’s art troupes and creative communities.

Balinese Christmas celebrations “Banjar Tuka embraces Catholicism” Words and photos Bram Setiawan

B

anjar Tuka in Dalung village is one of the oldest Catholic enclaves on the island of Bali and Christmas here is celebrated with a unique mix of

cultures. The majority of the Tuka residents are descendants of Bali’s first Catholics, but they still uphold Balinese culture and traditions. For Christmas Eve mass, hundreds of the Dalung congregation gathered at Tritunggal Mahakudus Catholic Church, which had been lavishly adorned with colorful Balinese-style decorations. The church gate was decorated with huge penjor – long bamboo poles decorated with woven young coconut leaves, colorful paper and other materials. Inside the church, dozens of fruit and flower arrangements had been placed to instill a truly Balinese Christmas

atmosphere. During the Christmas services, the congregation wore their best Balinese attire, in the same style as that worn by Balinese Hindus for temple ceremonies. “We always honor our rich Balinese culture and tradition. The Catholic church has adapted to the local culture and transformed itself to suit the present conditions,” explained a Catholic devotee, I Gusti Ngurah Bagus Kumara. “Wearing traditional dress is important to all Balinese people. We believe God only looks at our hearts and minds, not our physical appearance,” he said. Along with the other residents of Banjar Tuka, Kumara helped create the penjor to decorate the church for Christmas and New Year.

“For us, a penjor is much more than a decorative ornament. It symbolizes the tree of life – a prayer tree for the Catholic people here in Banjar Tuka,” he said. The church decorations were all made of natural materials, including bamboo, flowers, leaves, fruit and vegetables, all of which came from Mother Nature through the blessing of the Almighty, he said. The church in Tuka was first built in 1937 for the first wave of Catholic converts in Bali. The first to convert were reportedly I Made Beronong and I Wayan Dibloeg after they met Dutch Catholic priest Johanes Kersten in the

early 1930s, who was in Indonesia to serve the Dutch and Chinese Catholic congregations. In addition to being a Catholic theologian, Johanes was an expert in Balinese culture and literature. Beronong and Dibloeg were so attracted to the priest’s teachings that they finally decided to follow his path. Beronong’s sons, I Wayan Regig and I Made Rai, also followed their father to embrace Catholicism on June 6, 1936. “They were our forefathers – the first Catholic devotees in Banjar Tuka, who still saw their Balinese culture as their roots,” Kumara said.

“Center of traditional fish processing Words and photos Agung Parameswara

B

ali offers a myriad of natural, cultural and social attractions and, during the busy holiday season, most domestic and foreign tourists opt to spend their yearend holidays in the southern part of the island. However, if you have the chance to take a trip to the small coastal village of Kusamba, sandwiched between Klungkung and Karangasem in east Bali, you could find a different vacation experience. Kusamba is strategically located on the mainland for Nusa Penida islets and the village is home to a fish market and fish processing

site for local fishermen, who bring in their catches every day. Some of the catch is sold to places as far away as Badung and Denpasar, about 50 to 60 kilometers away, so to prevent the fresh fish from spoiling, it is either frozen or processed the traditional way by salting or smoking. It is mostly the women who process the fish, separating different species so they can be chilled or frozen for transport to traditional markets in Denpasar and Badung. Meanwhile, other women dry the fish by covering them in large amounts of salt. This

process is called pemindangan in the Balinese language and ikan pindang is salted fish. Due to its tender meat and firm texture, tuna fillets weighing between 200 and 500 grams are usually selected for salting. Separately, around 20 kilograms of tuna fish is smoked in large pans over wood fires. Every kiosk in Kusamba village produces at least 300 baskets of tuna. The 250-gram pindang tuna is sold at Rp 8,000 (58 US cents), while smoked tuna is sold at Rp 16,000. The vibrant life of local fishermen and the dedicated women of Kusamba village is flourishing and their local economy is thriving thanks to their tireless hard work.

The Prophet’s birthday “Celebrations in Kepaon village”

Words and photos Bram Setiawan

T

he birthday of Prophet Muhammad, locally known as Maulid Nabi, fell on Dec. 24 this year and the Muslim communities in Bali observed this special day in a variety of unique ways. In Kepaon village in South Denpasar, a centuries-old Muslim enclave, people celebrated Maulid Nabi with a cultural and religious parade, mass circumcisions and telu bulanin ceremony for babies celebrating their third month. The communal activities took place in AlMuhajirin Mosque in the center of the village, with families whose sons were participating in the mass circumcision and those with

10

three-month-old babies joining the telu bulanin ceremony all gathering in appropriate ceremonial dress. The villagers, especially the children, were enthusiastic to participate in both ceremonies as the families taking part would distribute food and drinks, as well as showering guests with coins and cash, as a symbol of good fortune for the babies and circumcised children. Padani, one of village leaders, said that during telu bulanin ceremony the babies’ hair would be cut and placed in a young coconut, which symbolized a pure container suitable for an innocent baby’s hair. This was hoped to ensure

that the child would have a bright, clear mind. After cutting the baby’s hair, the parents softly rubbed the child’s forehead with boreh wangi, a soft fragrant scrub made of flowers, paste and olive oil. “Some parents keep the baby’s hair, while others throw it into the sea or river,” Pandani said. Babies also have a tujuh bulanin ceremony when they reach seven months old. The Maulid Nabi celebration was held not only to honor the Prophet Muhammad but also to serve as a powerful social glue to unite everyone in the village. The history of Kepaon village has many versions, with some sources saying the name Kepaon stems from the word kebun (garden).

“In the past, the site of Kepaon village was full of pineapple plants.” Others say the name is derived from the Arabic word kafa’un, which means abundance. “The villagers always feel they are blessed by God with happy and prosperous families.” In Balinese, kepaon means kitchen, which in Balinese homes are usually located in the southern part of the site and Kepaon village is located in South Denpasar. Regardless, the village’s unique culture and traditions enrich the island and demonstrate the openness and tolerance of the island’s Hindu people toward their neighbors of other faiths, which is part of the real beauty of Bali.

ali has hundreds of Hindu temples, some of which have special or unique properties. One such temple is Tirta Sudamala in Sedit, Bebalang in Bangli, around 60 kilometers from Denpasar. Thousands of people visit the temple during major Hindu celebrations, such as Saraswati Day – the day to honor the goddess of knowledge and wisdom, as well as days the Balinese believe need extra prayers, such as full moon night and kajeng kliwon, when the balance between good and evil is believed to be slightly in favor of evil. However, many people also come to this temple on normal days to pray and perform the purification ceremony, melukat, in an effort to ward off various types of negativity. The temple’s name, Sudamala, comes from the Balinese word nyudama, which means to purify. “People come here to spiritually cleanse their bodies and souls using the holy water in the temple’s ponds and fountains,” said Ketut Suardika, Bebalang village head. The temple has three water sources and nine fountains, symbolizing Dewata Nawa Sanga, or the nine gods residing in the nine cardinal directions. “The water is believed to have divine power that can eliminate negative elements,” he said. The two meter-high fountain, called Panglukatan Widyadara Widyadari, is used by many to cleanse their bodies after performing certain ceremonies, such as the tooth filing ceremony. “Everybody comes here for one purpose – to spiritually cleanse their physical and mental state. The Balinese believe they have to get rid of bad things by praying, presenting special offerings and purifying their bodies,” he said. Ni Made Sariasih, a visitor from Gumbrih village in Jembrana, said she felt healthier after bathing under the tall fountain. “The water seemed to wipe away my illness. The flow of water from the fountain is so strong that it felt like a massage on my stiff shoulders.”

Denpasar Festival “A year-end street fiesta” Words Ni Komang Erviani Photos Zul Trio Anggono

T

he streets of Denpasar’s old town are hosting a cultural exhibition, food bazaar and shopping stalls for four days during the eighth Denpasar Festival. Along the streets, people are enjoying the richness of the city’s culture and creativity. Severe gridlock and limited parking have failed to prevent Denpasar’s resident from crowding downtown Denpasar since the festival officially opened on Monday. Thousands of people flock to the location every day, with most choosing to enjoy the festival at night. The festival’s main focus is at the intersection of Denpasar’s four main streets, where the Catur Muka statue of the four-faced god Brahma the creator stands. Many people have been seen taking selfies around the statue. On Monday, a cultural parade was held to mark the opening of the festival with performances taking place at the intersection. A mask parade started the opening ceremony, featuring scores of masked artists dancing in a parade entitled Taksu behind the Tantri mask. Tantri is a set of animal tales that narrates the philosophy of the struggle between kindness, hubris and greed. Mredangga Getug Bhumi, a Balinese-style marching band, also performed a theatrical take of Tantri. Performed by 280 artists from the Denpasar Indonesian Arts Institute (ISI Denpasar) and Paripurna art group from Bina village led by artist Made Sidia, the performance amazed thousands in the audience. Hundreds of children and youths also took part in the parade wearing unique attire that symbolized animals, plants and biodiversity. The performance by Penggak Men Mersi

cultural community displayed Bali’s traditional games, which are rapidly becoming extinct as most Balinese children now are more familiar with their electronic gadgets. “We want to remind people that our traditional games are more than just games; they give children freedom while embedding moral values,” said the coordinator of Penggak Men Mersi, Kadek Wahyudita. Marking the year end, the annual event is co-organized by relevant city agencies, including the tourism, trade and industry agencies, alongside local art communities. The festival is funded by the city administration’s annual budget. This year, the festival has taken the theme “Demi Denpasar” or “For The Sake of Denpasar” and is taking place on Jl. Veteran, Jl. Gajah Mada, in front of Jagatnatha temple and on I Gusti Ngurah Made Agung field, which is more popularly known as Puputan Badung field. At least 85 culinary booths are selling traditional foods, such as tipat cantok, blayag, bulung and many more. There are also many booths displaying products native to Denpasar, including endek hand-woven cloth, jewelry and many kind of plants. The festival features a photography exhibition, handicraft expo, as well as a cartoon exhibition that takes a critical look at Denpasar’s complicated problems. Balinese musicians have been entertaining visitors thronging the areas around Puputan, Catur Muka square and the Gajah Mada heritage area. The festival ends on New Year’s Eve with many art and music performances.

Island Buzz New Year delights at Golden Lotus

A jar of tropical sweetness

From Jan. 1 until March 31, Golden Lotus Chinese Restaurant will offer three tempting delicacies – Yee Sang, Yang Rou and Nian Gao – in celebration of the 2016 New Year and the Chinese New Year, which falls on Feb. 8. Yee Sang is a crispy, sweet and sour Chinese salad seasoned with Chinese spices that, according to Chinese belief, must be tossed at new year to symbolize wishing one another a year filled with abundant health, prosperity and happiness. Savor as well the rich flavor of Yang Rou, tender lamb with two sauce choices: fried lamb in black pepper sauce or wok-fried lamb with garlic, spring onion and black pepper. Meanwhile, Nian Gao is also making its debut on the Golden Lotus menu this new year. Widely known as Chinese New Year cake, it represents the hope that the new year will bring sweeter days and the family will always be “glued” together. Golden Lotus Chinese Restaurant is in the main lobby of Bali Dynasty Resort and serves Cantonese and Szechuan cuisine, as well as dim sum lunches, prepared by Chinese master chefs.

Grand Nikko Bali’s guests love the authenticity of the classic marmalades that are served daily in the resort’s breakfast outlet, Brasserie des Celebrites, so the resort’s pastry chef has proudly created an array of homemade marmalades that can be purchased at Delicatessen Cafe. The all-year abundance of tropical fruits has inspired the resort’s pastry chef, Katarina Sari, to create marmalades using local ingredients: watermelon, pineapple cinnamon and tomato ginger. It’s not easy to choose a favorite marmalade as each one has its own unique taste. The refreshing watermelon spread is bursting with summer flavor, while the sweet-and-sour combination of pineapple and cinnamon is really quite exotic. For something a little different, there is also a blend of fresh tomatoes that have been spiced up with a hint of ginger. Take a jar of tropical sweetness home to enjoy on fresh bread in the morning for breakfast or with your afternoon tea delights. The signature marmalades are priced at Rp 90,000 (US$6.58) net per jar and are exclusive to Grand Nikko Bali’s Delicatessen Cafe.

Global Village Kafé

“A super-chic place to hang out in north Bali”

B

Words and photos Anggara Mahendra

uleleng in north Bali is starting to lure domestic and foreign tourists keen to explore its less well known destinations and natural wonders, as well as its rich culinary traditions. Lovina is one of the regency’s most popular areas with its lines of chic cafés and bistros, villas and star-rated hotels. Just a five-minute drive from Lovina, in Seririt village, is a popular hangout – Global Village Kafé. This cozy, shaded eatery is surrounded by lush tropical gardens, while the interior is decorated with Buddha statues and ethnic handicrafts from around the world. The lighting is beautifully designed to create a warm ambience with colorful but dim lights. With its friendly, welcoming atmosphere, visitors feel

they are dining in someone’s home. Global Village Kafé offers a large variety of western and local foods at affordable prices and the chai tea is served in an earthenware pot with fresh milk and cinnamon. Many foreign guests spend their time browsing the Internet as the café offers fast Wi-Fi. “Most tourists come from Australia, the Netherlands and the US,” said one waiter. Opened in February 2013, Global Village Kafé has a special mission – most of its profits go to charities, including those helping the sick receive medical treatment. In this competitive business era, Global Village Kafé remains faithful to fostering humanity.
