Introduction The current Assistive Technology Evaluation is intended to be used as an ongoing measurement of student progress, and a guide for lesson planning when introducing new assistive technology programs. It is suggested that the student be introduced to one program at a time, starting with basic skills and moving to more complex functions of the program. Evaluations can be done at different times throughout the semester, using different coloured pencils, in order to gage progress over time (see Student Name page). Sections of this resource guide may be copied as needed for use with one student or an entire classroom. It is recommended that adults familiar with the programs conduct the evaluation, as students themselves may not be able to accurately assess their own areas of strength and need. This evaluation may be used to a) provide evidence of the need for more intensive support such as a SEA (Special Equipment Allotment) claim b) provide ongoing confirmation that the teacher is providing appropriate accommodations in the classroom, as indicated on the student’s IEP
Recommended Procedure • • • • • • • •
Evaluate general computer skills (p 6) If student has had exposure to program being taught, administer initial evaluation of program Target specific skills to be taught Teach specific skills directly, then in applied context using curriculum Evaluate set of skills which have been taught Target next set of skills to be taught Repeat process At end of unit, full evaluation of program skills may be administered
