Loteng Sela

A Crispy Snack with Typical Flavor

hen traveling on the Island of the Gods, try to enjoy the peculiarities of loteng sela (a peanut brittle made from cassava). This traditional food is a kind of snack having become a favorite for the Hindu community in Bali. Moreover, farming communities that live in rural areas used to eat rice with side dish like this loteng sela. It is often called crackers or potato chips because it is made from cassava as the main ingredient. In other areas, this loteng sela

is called peanut brittle. It is oval and thin with the size of about 10-15 cm x 15-20 cm, so that it becomes crispier when being fried. In the 1980s, it was famous snack in Tabanan area. Children, teenagers and adults made this food as their refreshment enjoyed while chatting in the afternoon until night. Other than being cheap, it is also very easy to get. Virtually all families can make it. It happens because farmers used to grow cassava other than rice. They prefer to grow this cassava because it can be used to mix with rice for daily

food. Recently, the mixed rice seems to have been abandoned. People prefer to eat pure rice (rice without mixture). Likewise the cassava starts to be abandoned and people prefer modern instant food. Children also assume the loteng sela an old fashioned food. Nevertheless, the loteng sela is still produced by the community so far. It can be found at stalls, food stores and supermarket. It has been served in beautiful plastic packaging and the price is already determined. The main ingredient used is cassava. After being peeled out, it is grated and squeezed to reduce the water content. Its spice consists of garlic, aromatic ginger, turmeric, chili, coriander, chili and salt. For those wishing to get a different taste, it can be added with flavoring to taste. All the spices are grounded and then mixed together with grated cassava. After that, stir it until finely blended. Put some amount of the batter on a banana leaf pre-smeared with coconut oil and then flattened. Make oval shape and press again and again to make it thinner. Steam and dry under the sun to dry. Having dried out, remove from the banana leaf and fry on preheated pan to be cooked and tasteful. Now, it is ready to be served. B N (BTN/015)

Eka Karya Botanical Garden ka Karya Bali Botanical Garden is TABANAN a large botanical garden located in Rainbow Over Ricelields Tabanan County, Bali. It is the first botanical garden founded by the Indonesian government on July 15, 1959. Its operation is managed by the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI), while the organizational structure and development is under the Center for Plant Conservation of Bogor Botanical Garden. At first the Eka Karya Bali Botanical is only intended for conifers. Along with the development and change of status as well as a broad region, the botanical garden perched on the altitude of 1,250-1,450 meters above sea level is now becoming an ex-situ conservation area for plants of tropical mountains of eastern Indonesia. Originally, the Botanical Garden only spread across 50 hectares, but today it has been expanded to 157.5 hectares. It has several collections of plants grouped based on their kinship. In addition to their collection, the types of plant are also pursued for research and development. Some of the existing collections include the orchids, cactus, fern, bamboo, moss collection, begonia, ritual plant, medicinal plants, aquatic plants and palm.

The truth is not new or spoken, it is just channeled from where it has always been through those that are capable of feeling it. The island of Bali has a long tradition of people who can reach the higher planes and manifest this wisdom. This magic is a part of the roots of the island, and wisdom flows through each person truly making Bali the island of the Gods. As a young woman the path was written in her heart and her destiny unraveled, following the steps to the source of who she is. The beautiful

love that has been guiding her came into her path fully when she was 19 years old, when during a water purification ceremony she went into the other side and was asked to come back as a Rishi. She was too young, a woman, untrained, and from a family of the land. Yet none of it mattered, because it was a higher destiny that was given to her as a task to serve as a bridge to the divine. She now performs water purification ceremonies for the dozens of people who gather daily to be purified, released of the burdens of karma and life. It was after this awakening that she became able to naturally bring the mantras, perform the mudras, and allow the energy movement that is a part of the tradition of who she is and of the tradition of the island. Ida-Resi is a conduit for the higher plane to touch the seen, and the function she performs can only be described as holy. She is naturally a holy woman, and the title of Maharishi just confirms what can be felt in everything she does. Ida, the woman behind the Maharishi is a strong woman, who has the ability to manage daily life for the extended family at the Gryia, helping her family manage a lifestyle that they are not accustomed to. She can be found spending half a day to talk to them through the challenges of life, offering compassion and guidance to all. She is a down to Earth woman who, before her destiny met with her, was dreaming of a normal life, of studying at the university, of a job and of a family. So when people come to her for support and guidance, like a loving mother, she sits with them and allows them to express their concerns. She listens patiently and carefully, with an open mind and an open heart. She carefully speaks words that touch the heart and bring

relief to the mind. Ida-Resi, even though she is a Maharishi, in the same way she is involved with her family, she allows those people that visit her to approach her openly. People come for a ceremony, or for a day, or even a longer stay. She can address problems that range from pain in the body, to emotional heartache, to worries of life from the mind and the heart. She chooses her words carefully and the words touch the heart. She has a beautiful mastery of the English language that allow for many international visitors to find comfort next to her. She performs the ceremonies daily with whoever comes to see her. Even alone, she would perform the ceremonies anyway, because it is her way of life. Usually though, there are many people flocking around her. She is invited to many locations to offer her blessing and as time passes and her reputation grows, the invitations keep coming. She keeps a simplicity and humility through it all. As the water is flowing, the purity is reached. The work of Ida-Resi is to use water as a vehicle to purify the heart and then transcendence is reached. Water flows as the energy of the life itself. If the heart is not pure it cannot reach the divine realms, so she purifies us with water. She defines the work that she does as a way to purify the heart so the energy can flow freely. She has the ability to see the impurities that encumber the heart, and in her ceremonies she purifies the heart. She is able to clear the blockages of the heart energetically, so that the sacred is reached. Regent Cup Buffalo Race Unique Tradition always pleases akepung or the buffalo race -a unique tradition in Jembrana, is always interesting to watch. Virtually every week the community of Jembrana witnesses the race, and yet they never get bored of it. People from outside the region even from other countries have become addicted to the spectacle. The buffalo race for the Regent Cup that was held at the Delod Berawah circuit, Mendoyo, on Sunday (Aug. 9) is proof. The race was officially opened by the Regent of Jembrana, I Putu Artha, and was attended by thousands of visitors. People are willing to flock to the circuit and stand from morning until afternoon just to see the watch the buffalo race tourist attraction. Locals and foreigners mingled as they watched the race. Interestingly, many travelers came to see and take pictures of the race that has been recognized as a national cultural heritage. “It is the greatness of buffalo race. Without being told, people have found out on their own when the race is being held- -such is the greatness of the buffalo race” said the coordinator of the race, I Made Mara. Indeed, amidst globalization and the onslaught of foreign cultures, the buffalo race has remained entrenched and been made more attractive by members of the local community who dressed the buffalo like Balinese dancers. So, the logo of the monkey forest Ubud is a reflection of three main elements, namely; monkeys, forest and Ubud (location). The Monkey Forest Ubud is the popular name of the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary that is also used as a brand name in the logo. The ‘monkey forest Ubud’ was selected because the name is already known so it is easy to say, easy to remember, short, precise

and clearly represents a brand (brand of product). The image of the monkey forest UBUD logo serves as the brand product and location. The wording ‘monkey forest’ using lowercase signifies equality in society as the monkey forest is jointly owned by Padangtegal residents, self-managed by the residents and is a legacy and the asset of the residents. “The Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary can become a destination in the mind of travellers and thus will contribute to the advancement of this business for the customary village” he added. The color of the typeface (font) is grass green to symbolize the flexibility and humility of the local community. The wording UBUD applies uppercase (capitalized) and is meant to confirm that the location of monkey forest is part of the UBUD area, Gianyar, Bali. The unification of the leaf and the monkey image epitomizes the relationship of living beings to nature.

Anak Agung Gde Agung Says Goodbye to Badung Community fter saying goodbye to the people in Petang and Kuta subdistrict on Monday night (Jul. 27), the Regent of Badung, A.A. Gde Agung, along with his wife Mrs. Ratna Gde Agung ,said goodbye to the community of Mengwi subdistrict at Wantilan Hall of Taman Ayun Temple. Gde Agung expressed his sincere gratitude to the people of Mengwi that have supported his policies and programs over the past 10 years that he has been in office. Regent Gde Agung stressed that when he started his service in Badung, he met with the people of Mengwi face -to-face. Due to public support, he successfully led Badung during two

periods (2005-2015) that ended on August 5, 2015. The Regent also conveyed that during the ten years of his term, many developments were successful and many goals had been achieved for Badung.. He admitted that many public expectations had still not been met, and for these the regent apologized. Mengwi, community leader, A.A. Gede Dharmayasa, expressed his gratitude and appreciation for the successful developments that were implemented by the regent in various areas, especially in the subdistrict of Mengwi subdistrict. According to Dharmayasa, the successful development of Badung is inseparable from the vision and mission of Regent Gde Agung

Some of the successes of the leadership of Regent Gde Agung’s, include; the establishment of the Mangupraja Mandala civic center at Sempidi including the inauguration of the capital of Badung, Mangupura, and the appointment of frangipani as the mascot of Badung, improvements to road infrastructure such as alleys that have been hardened with paving blocks. Formerly, it was known as Teluk Padang. It is a white sandy bay protected from the solid black rock. Because of its location, the undersea life is well maintained. The attractions at Padangbai include the clean and thick white sandy beach that can be used as an appropriate place for sun bathing or swimming in the sea. Beauty of the underwater scenery is excellent for diving and snorkeling given the various types of coral here which is always popular with diving tourists. BTN

Batur Geopark atur Geopark is a tourist destination located in Kintamani that integrates geological, cultural and floral and faunal diversity. Geologically, Batur Geopark features has a cresent shaped caldera about 7.5 km wide with a maximum width of 2.5 km, circumference of about 22 km and an area of about 16 km2 known as Lake Batur. There are 15 cultural villages spread across the Geopark including the cemetery at Trunyan, Baris Gede Dance and others. A Native Home to Colorful Fishes Tu l a m b e n i s a coastal village located in Kubu Subdistrict, Karangasem Regency. This village has become one of the famous diving sites in Bal i , e s p e c i a l l y around the location of the USAT Liberty shipwreck, an army freighter belonging to the United States that was drowned after being shot with torpedo by a Japanese submarine in 1942. The USAT Liberty was discovered in the 1970s by residents of Tulamben Village, Kubu Subdistrict, Karangasem Regency. Later on, the location was used as a tourist destination for many divers who started coming to see the USAT Liberty shipwreck. On that account, Tulamben then developed into a commercial destination, including diving tours for those who wanted to have a closer look at the wreck of the USAT Liberty. BTN

Terunyan Village Lies at the edge of Lake Batur, to the west of Abrig Hill, Kintamani. Villagers here are “native Balinese” referred to as “Bali Aga” people, This village with its unique traditions, can be reached by 30 minute boat ride from Kedisan Village across Lake Batur. The name Terunyan was derived from the word “Taru” and “Menyan”, meaning ‘fragnant trees’ that grow in the village. Local people deem the trees highly important. The corpses of the dead laid down in open graves under the trees and are simply covered white fabrics and bamboo covers called “Ancak Saji”, but the faces of the dead are left uncovered. Tabanan Terima Indolivestock Garuda Indonesia ‘’Launching’‘ Service Award 2015 Visit Central Java Pass abupaten Tabanan kembali meraih penghargaan. Jika sebelumnya menerima Penghargaan Bakti Koperasi dan Usaha Kecil Menengah 2015 yang ditujukan langsung untuk Bupati Tabanan Ni Putu Eka Wiryastuti, menjelang akhir Juli lalu kembali menorehkan prestasi di kancah nasional. Kabupaten Tabanan meraih prestasi di bidang peternakan dengan menerima penghargaan Indolivestock Service Awards untuk Indonesia bagian tengah bersama dengan Kabupaten Sinjai dari Komunitas Pengembangan Usaha Peternakan Indonesia (KPUPI). Dengan diraihnya penghargaan tersebut, Tabanan di tahun ini resmi menyandang predikat Adipraja Satwa Sewaka 2015.

Penyerahan penghargaan berlangsung dalam Indo Livestock Expo and Forum 2015 yang merupakan kegiatan di bidang peternakan berskala internasional kesepuluh kalinya pada 29 Juli 2015 di Grand City Convex, Surabaya. Penghargaan dalam bentuk plakat dan sertifikat itu diterima oleh Sekda Kabupaten Tabanan I Nyoman Wirna Ariwangsa yang mewakili Bupati Tabanan. Penghargaan itu kemudian diserahkan langsung oleh Sekda Wirna Ariwangsa kepada Bupati Eka di rumah dinasnya, Sabtu (1/8). Bupati Eka menyambut hangat pemberian penghargaan tersebut. Selain memberikan kebanggan tersendiri, penghargaan ini juga perlu dijadikan motivasi bagi Pemerintah Kabupaten Tabanan untuk berbuat lebih maksimal. Karena itu Satuan Lalu Lintas (Sat Lantas) Polres Gianyar dan Dinas Perhubungan Informasi dan Komunikasi (Dishub Infokom) Gianyar gelar sidak. Kabid Lalu Lintas Dishub Gianyar, Nur Widyaswanto mengatakan, sebelumnya sudah dilaksanakan survey dan monitoring terkait pemasangan tanda larangan parkir di wilayah Ceking Teras. Desa Pecatu Diundang Hadiri Peringatan HUT Proklamasi di Istana Negara emerintah Kabupaten Badung terus mendorong kebersamaan dan keswadayaan gotong royong masyarakat di Desa/Kelurahan. Untuk mewujudkan hal tersebut, Pemkab melalui Badan Pemberdayaan Masyarakat Desa dan Pemerintahan Desa (BPMD dan Pemdes) setiap tahunnya menggelar lomba desa dan kelurahan. Tujuannya untuk menilai tingkat perkembangan desa dan kelurahan yaitu dengan membandingkan data desa dan kelurahan 2 (dua) tahun terakhir yang terdapat dalam profil desa/kelurahan. Sebagaimana diatur dalam Permendagri Nomor 13 Tahun 2007 tentang penyelenggaraan perlombaan desa dan kelurahan. Menurut Kepala BPMD dan Pemdes Drs. Putu Gede Sridana, M.Si , dari setiap lomba desa dan kelurahan tingkat Provinsi Bali, duta Kabupaten Badung tidak pernah absen untuk meraih juara. Bahkan sebagai duta Bali di tingkat nasional pun wakil Badung sangat diperhitungkan karena sering meraih juara nasional. Dijelaskan, untuk tahun 2015 ini duta Badung yang diwakili Desa Pecatu juga ber-

hasil menjadi yang terbaik dengan meraih juara I ditingkat Propinsi. Dengan berhasil meraih juara I tingkat Provinsi, Desa Pecatu mendapat kehormatan diundang oleh pemerintah pusat untuk menghadiri Apel Peringatan HUT ke-70 Proklamasi Kemerdekaan RI di Istana Negara, Jakarta pada 17 Agustus mendatang dan mengikuti kegiatan temu karya nasional. Ditambahkan, mengenai prestasi duta Badung, dari tahun 2000 hingga 2015, Desa atau kelurahan di Kabupaten Badung telah 9 kali memperoleh juara I untuk tingkat Provinsi Bali. The activities at the location demonstrate the habits of people at local village. “Visitors having a promenade at this agrotourism area will be escorted by a guide,” said Operations Manager, Komang Suniati, accompanied by her staff Dewa Ayu Pradnya Dewi. Skilled officers will guide each visitor to see various types of tree collections. Additionally, they will also see dozens of civet being busy eating coffee beans. Local guide will explain about the process of making civet coffee. More interestingly, visitors are also invited to see further process of civet coffee in the eco-friendly kitchen. As the presentation given by local guide, civet coffee does not belong to varieties of coffee, but the coffee eaten by civet. The undigested coffee beans are secreted through civet droppings. Well, the coffee beans in the droppings are then processed into civet coffee. “Civet is only digesting the skin of the coffee bean, while the beans remain intact and are still coated by the epidermis,” said Komang Suniati. Civet is good at choosing coffee bean which one is really mature

Tolerance here is a proverb that says “When in Rome, do as the Romans” , meaning we should behave respectfully towards the culture of the place where we are. Naturally we should, appreciate and respect local customs, culture and norms wherever we are. Balinese philosophy holds the same notion as expressed desa mawa cara and negara mawa tata, meaning every village has its own regulations and customs that have to be complied with, as the state has laws that must be obeyed. Compliance with the prevailing norms of a place place indicates one’s appreciation and educational background. This is no exaggeration. Bali has a great diversity of norms from village to the next and these are influenced by many factors without their being one fundamental context. The substance of these differences can be a form of recognition of the essence of the Godhead: not different but remain one. Actually this is the cultural richness for Bali and indicates that a culture is flourishing. And shows how interactions within a diverse society produce a basic consensus that governs social life, culture and religion. Desa mawa cara is within the scope of negara mawa tata that has a higher and more extensive scope of regulations. From time immemorial, this has been the starting point of interactions between the people of Bali and foreign travelers. Mutual respect is the key to how harmony is maintained. In Bali,

respect for the diverse cultures and customs of different local communities, from one village to the next is maintained, despite disparities. Desa mawa cara tells what can be done and what cannot. When entering a sanctum or temple, it’s the reference of how to behave, what attire should be adorned used and so forth. Be a good guest and be a good host. In the present context too, the spirit of mutual respect should be maintained. Current social conditions in Bali are increasingly more complex with wideneing plurality. And it is not impossible the gap to widen and lead to conflict, if all parties do not remind each other of how to be harmonious and return to the basic philosophy. Mutual appreciation and respect is required Indeed there is always the potential for conflict. However, with tolerance and humility, harmonony will become stronger. B N

Ngerebong, a Unique Tradition of Kesiman Village KESIMAN village is still known to be very strong with the royal era. This customary village covering the Kesiman Petilan, Kesiman Kertalangu and Kesiman is known to have dozens of interrelated temples. The Kesiman Petilan alone has about 40 temples. Its villagers are known to strongly uphold their customs. ight days after the celebration of Kuningan festivity precisely on Redite (Sunday) Pon Medangsia, the Hindus at Kesiman organize the ngerebong tradition. This is a unique tradition held open to general public that want to watch. People wishing to enjoy the uniqueness of this tradition are required to wear traditional Balinese attires and woman getting her period is not allowed to come into the temple area. Many people interpret the word Ngerebong as ‘assembling.’ Besides, there is also an interpretation as spinning. People believe that on the ngerebong day is the auspicious day where many gods gather. Center of this tradition is carried out at Petilan Temple. So, the temple is better known as the Pengerebon-

gan Temple. Some people call this ngerebong an ancient tradition so that residents can be avoided from calamity or disaster. It includes the Butha Yadnya ceremony that aims to neutralize the evil power (bhuta) in order to become good power (god) so as not to interfere with human beings, especially at Kesiman. A customary and cultural observer, I Wayan Turun, revealed that ngerebong ceremony aims to remind the Hindus through the sacred rituals so that they can continuously maintain the harmony of human relationship to God, fellow human beings and nature. As their property, the dancers bring a variety of weapons such as mace, spear, machete, shield and kris dagger and they all dance in a trance. Their movement is similar to that of martial arts and they are mostly in trance condition.

Every now and then, the dancers need the help of others to soothe themselves when no longer unable to control the situation. Many meaningful movements are showed off in this dance made by the dancers in a trance, like brandishing guns up. Movements of the dancers indicate readiness to fight and maintain the security of Kesiman village in terms of psychical world. It is similar to the meaning of sacred Baris Dance of Bali in general. This simple dance shows a greatness and dignity. All dance movements are full of charisma. The dancers of Poleng Kesiman put on long-sleeved black velvet shirts, white clothes, checkered sarong and shawl

wrapped around their body. Besides, they also put on checkered headband. On the ear, they tuck a rejuna hibiscus flower and kris dagger in the waist. This demonstrates one of the distinctive characteristics owned by the Poleng Kesiman Dance in terms of costumes. In the meantime, the dance is also accompanied by female temple priests in trance condition putting on allwhite attires and embellished with the clothes of Poleng Kesiman. This procession is witnessed by priest of Dalem Temple of Kesiman along with royal officials and families. After that, the dancing temple priests come back into the innermost courtyard of the temple. Promotion of the typical endek of Denpasar took place over four days (Jul. 6-9) at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center. “I introduced endek as a Balinese traditional fabric,” said Rhea Cempaka. Rhea Cempaka, explained that during the event, she also featured and displayed fashion products such as songket, embroidered kebaya and apparel (ready to wear) made from traditional fabrics characterizing Bali. These have becomes the superior products of Denpasar. “We hope that traditional hand woven products such as endek can be better known internationally. Our endek fabric is not inferior to the other types of fabrics” she said.

CEO of MarkPlus, Hermawan Kartajaya, said that Sanur is a unique area unlike Kuta, with its mass tourism and Ubud with its quality tourism. Sanur, he said, has developed in accordance with the character of the region and the people of Sanur. Chairman of the Sanur Development Foundation (YPS), I.B. Operations Manager of the Tanah Lot tourist attraction, I Ketut Toya Adnyana, said that the new building poses an effort to improve services to visitors. In addition, the more spacious building can accommodate all the employees, so that their presence is not separated. “Hopefully, they can work comfortably so that it will have good impact on the quality of service to visitors,” he said. The construction, explained Toya Adnyana, is the program of the Tanah Lot

management board launched in October 2014. The construction was completed in June 2015. Its development fund is taken from the development and promotion fund worth IDR 2.7 billion. “We would like to express our gratitude to all the parties and the government for the success of this building,” he said. Regent Eka congratulated the inauguration of the new building of the Tanah Lot tourist attraction. t is easy to reach the temple, especially for residents that have been to Yeh Gangga Beach. From Wisma Prashanti Hospital or heading for Yeh Gangga Beach, it is straight to the south. Approximately after one kilometer away, turn left and from here the journey to the temple is around two hundred meters away. Chairman of the Development Committee of the Jro Gede Tanah Pegat Temple, I Ketut Mudra, said that according to chronicle of the ancestors the deity abiding at the Tanah Pegat is Ida Bhatara Dalem Majapahit. The temple is estimated to have been established in 1416. It was originated from Ida Bhatara Dalem Majapahit who left Java to Bali followed by 13 faithful followers. Having enthroned at Tanah Pegat and had a shrine, it was inaugurated by Danghyang Nirartha or Ida Pedanda Sakti Wau Rauh. During that time, Danghyang Nirartha got a revelation that supporting devotees of Ida Panembahan Sakti Jro Gede Tanah Pegat should not be more or less than 13 people and it still applies up to these days.
