STUFF - By Jens,Bosic (1995)

MASSIVE - By Jens,Bosic,Bisha (1995)

Leco,Abs,Necone,Angel i Dulait. In the middle of 80’s, the 45th block seemed like any other suburb in Belgrade. Besides extreme isolation from the city center, lack of infrastructure, and the river Sava nearby, this block had one more interesting thing. Graffiti. This part of the town, was and stayed Meka of Belgrade’s graffiti, and some of the first graffiti in Belgrade were painted here. -In the middle of 80’s, the wave of hip-hop culture that owerflothed Europe, arrived in the 45th Block. -At this time was formed the crew which was interested in break-dance, besides graffiti. The crew was called Fantastic Boys, also known as Rap City Crew, and the members were Babuš, Đela, Steva, Tića and others. It’s interesting that this crew had been defeated in finals of break-dance competition in 1985. The winner was Djogani Fantastico crew which will become the leading dance dizel group in Serbia of 90’s -The one of the first graffiti that this crew painted was octopus on the pavement of the river side where they were practising break-dance. In time that place became a certain kind of hall of fame. Besides this graffiti they had painted „Rap city“ and „RCC“ on the walls of kindergardens nearby. „RCC“ was untouched till 2007. -Inspired by Fantastic Boys, Jens paints his very first graffiti „Miša“ in 1988., also near the river Sava and so he becomes known as painter with the longest history of painting in Serbian graffiti

scene -Graffiti in Serbia had almost died due to crisis in country and war. Only Jens (still known as Misa) was painting from time to time. - After short time spent in Paris, Jens came back and started a crew BMB (Biša Miša Bosić), with Biša and Bosić. -The same year he paints graffiti „Stuff“ with Bosic’s character of alien smoking dope. „Stuff“ initialised Serbian graffiti scene because it was the first graffiti of that kind in country. This graffiti had created the euforia at short notice, and „Stuff“ was the backgroud of the „Rap and Soul“ (show on tv Pink),and in the videao of Sunshine (America preview) and Maddogs ( Sloboda). „Stuff“ was on covers of various hip-hop albums, ironicly cause Jens and his crew listened techno and trance.Even six months later, you could see groups of people taking photos in front of the wall,or just looking at this graffiti. After that, next graffiti were „Funk“ on Branko’s bridge and the one near Mostar, painted by unknown authors. - At the same time, in the 45th block Dr. Qee (Dr. Kiza) began his work. He was known by painting of Bob Rock and the line „Anger is a gift“. Soon, however Kiza stopped working. međutim, Kiza je brzo izašao iz grafiti priče. - Cobesta28, better known as Cobes, starts his painting in Blocks in the middle of 90’s,and his first graffiti is in Novi Sad.At the begining of year 1997. he meets Jens by accident, and they start

working together in Blocks and the city center. -In the same year Cobes and Jens formed AGC crew and began to work in the 45th Block, mostly with silver. Besides them ,as the center of the crew , there were Mise, Sane 751, Krca, Jamas and Jole. -At the same period and later new crews started showing up. New names were Bougie, Soter (90210); Sub Zero, Negre, Abs (Halley zone); Dr Leco, Vsa, Fuz (SCD); Sholim, Sale, Da Gambla, Vuiche (Chemical); Leo’(CO2); Face, Mask, Demon, Chief Sale AK and Shorty. - The first graffiti on trains were painted in 1997. by Cobes, Bougie, Face and Soter. - AGC crew fell appart in the begining of year 1998.,when it became so numerous that you couldn’t tell who is a real member.Besides that, scene still functioned . - In 1999. the first graffiti Jam took place in Belgrade in „Kralj Petar“ school in the center of the city. Jens, Mise, Cobes, Sane 751, Face, Mask, Sub Zero, Abs, Negre, Shorty, Chief Sale AK and Dr Leco were painting as hosts. Guests were Jen and Fuk from Zagreb and one Slovenian crew. - Untill 1999. the paiters mostly used Kenda Kolor and Cosmos sprays. Kim-Tec sprays that came to Serbia later from Poland, had rich colour spectre, good bottle pressure, and a low price. The price was 10 dinars( 0.30euro). Other sprays costed 170 dinars. At the same time the appearance of caps affected price rising. - After bombing in 1999, some crews fell apart, and many painters became less active, or completely stopped painting. - At the begining of 2000. Asem (Koma), serbian painter from Keln offered internet space, at his cost, in order to promote Belgrade graffiti scene. As there was still some kind of unity between the painters, they formed BG illegal crew. The members were: Sub Zero, Bougie, Cobes, Negre, Dr Leco, Abs, Necone, Angel and Dulait. That year new painers started showing up and some new crews were formed. - Bg illegal fell apart after a year, year and half. Cobes and Bougie were the first that left so they formed AFO crew, which still exists. Other members left graffiti scene shortly after that. This was the end of Belgrade’s old school, and the style of paintings in Belgrade took completly new direction. Hope

Anti fašistička omaldina, aternativno fizicko obrazovajne, all for one itd.

Padneš tu i tamo,na nekim glupim mestima i akcijama.

How and when did you get involved in the graffiti story? Ufff…that was at the end of the previous century :/ The story began because I started to hang out with Cobe Aka. Viet who started to work a couple of months before me. It was in 1997. When I saw a couple of his writings, I decided to give it a shot since I had already tried something similar but with no success. Where is your first graffiti? Like everybody else’s first ones – it’s in the neighbourhood I live in. Why PANK? There are a lot of reasons: that’s the kind of music I listened while I was growing up. Also, the word itself has a lot of meanings: attitude, the life style, politics, the way you see the society and the system….anarchy, vandalism = graffiti!!!! After all, the first graffiti that were made in the 80’s were the PUNK graffiti . What do you think about the connection between the hiphop and graffiti, knowing that graffiti is a part of the hiphop culture? I have no opinion on that subject… Generally, I believe that it is a major stupidity...which was served by the mainstream crap. If you take things that way, the skaters

Saint Pank.AFO 2005

only listen to Hc and nothing but that…etc. What’s more, during the cartoon wave in 1997, the number of characters that listened to hip-hop was quite insignificant. It was also the case with the European scene. But, if somebody is fine with that, so be it! What’s your opinion of the connection between the ultra fans and graffiti? Nothing special…Graffiti should not be so important part of our lives and the same goes with cheering. I was involved with that while I was drawing, and even today some groups from the North have my drawings on their teams’ emblems and also they reconstructed the graffiti we had made…To be honest, from this point of view…I think I should have used my time in a better way )))))) . In some way, the two things don’t go well with each other, on one side we have a message and individuality but on the other hand there is blind love and stupid crowd!? At the beginning, which foreign scene had the biggest impact on the development of the graffiti drawings in Belgrade? Hahahaha…none…Maybe Paris a little bit because of the Papa Yens who imported them in the city block ))))) The 1997 sanctions, Kenda was a luxury, one single magazine circled around the city. I remember one time

33

that somebody brought Chaos from Zagreb (third or fourth edition)…and I believe it fell apart because it had been read hundreds of times )))))), not to mention the Internet…etc. Everything came from somebody’s mind and somebody’s trips. Have there been any significant changes on our scene since the time you started doing this? Of course!!! About five years ago, things were happening really fast. New people, new teams…the standards have definitely moved to another, higher level…all you had to do, was to get outside the house and go for a ride…I think that everything is clear. It is interesting that the styles in the towns around Serbia became very alike. In the past, we had different styles in Belgrade, Novi Sad and Subotica which was highly influenced by the cartoons that came from Hungary mostly. At the same time, the scenes in Belgrade and in Novi Sad developed independently…only later did we come into contact with each other, that happened in 1999.

Necone Negre Pank.AFO 2005

Today, what scene do you have most respect for? Honestly? I really don’t know, I like the French and that’s that!? What can you tell us about your team and the people in it? The first team I have ever made was with Sotter, that was the very beginning, and it was called 90210. At that time, that was the only team from the city block and then CO2 appeared. Apart from it, later on, when we became very familiar with how the things worked, we formed Bg illegal, which was a mixture of all the relevant teams at that time (agc!, helliz, ruffsquad, 90210)…It didn’t last for too long for many reasons that were only known to us! At the beginning of the year 2000, Viet and I made AFO group, and the people (from 90210 that became bigger in the meantime) that were important to us joined the group (most importantly, they were our friends). Also, we met some people from Serbia that lived abroad and they turned out to be great! From then on, the things have remained the same as they are today. We are: Soter, Pafes, Viet, Imun, Pekmez, Bougie.

Riks.PDF.FYGS Pank.AFO 2006

What does AFO stand for? - Anti-Fascistic Organization.....etc. The original and basic variant is the first one! It still exists as such! Drawing graffiti is the original way to introduce yourself andyour team-mates to the public... Are you trying to get a deeper message across to the society by your works? I think I am! I agree with you... The point is not just draw whatever you want without any sense. The message is very important, so that’s what we have the most insisted on and people are aware of that.Actually, people’s names as well as the name of the team point tothat. However..... galleries ( exhibit pictures) on streets!!!! Is it important to you that the message would be understood only by the people who are the part of the graffiti scene or you’re trying to reach the minds of the citizens of Serbian capital? What’s more important for us is the latter... The graffiti artists pay more attention to the font structure, color, concept...So, it means they have a twisted picture :) An ordinary man is the one who is our target... It means that our aim is to provoke the reaction whether positive or negative - it really doesn’t matter. Do you find a certain satisfaction in the fact that drawing graffiti is forbidden? That’s the whole point, stolen fruit is the sweetest!!!.... Get the adrenalin flowing!!! Have you ever had any troubles with the police because of the graffiti? Yes, as the most graffiti artists, I assume. At the very beginning...You’ve been caught here and there, at some foolish places or in same actions. Fortunatly, without any serious consequences :) .. You’ve gradually become skilled B-) I have no more questions for you. Instead I’ll give you a chance to tell our readers whatever you want. First of all, I want to thank you for the interview! My message to the readers is: ‘Believe in what you do, ego trips leave at home... Do not spoil good fun!’ I don’t want to pour out the words of wisdom, so bye! Thank you!
