House on Pali Hill Refinement & Execution As a site architect, my role was in bridging the gap between an architectural drawing and the craftsmen at site. It was in making the design understandable to the craftsmen and refining it through active discussions and sketches. A management of man, material, organizing the smooth flow of work and a keen eye to the execution was a part of the responsibility.

Brigade Exotica - Interiors of Show Flat The Interiors was approached keeping in mind the user, the flexibility and the feel a Home is to have. And the most challenging part being, the need to roughly be inclusive in the thought considering varied tastes and aspirations of the 360 odd buyers. It was to help the prospective buyer realize his future in this place. The level of engagement went down to the last detail like choosing table mats, and cutlery for the dining table too. Hence, a joyful feel with pastel greens were considered for the kids bedroom, while bright rustic, warm shades considered for the Master bedroom.

A keen reading of the plan reveals two specific concerns:

Hospitals are places where people go when they are not in the best of health. As an architect our role is to create spaces that are comfortable, friendly & open. Basically Spaces that make people Cheerful ! Role: Active in planning of hospitals and interiors. Planning, with focus on defined functional spaces - The OT Complex with its soiled n clean corridors, air pressures in zones, ICU regions etc. ease of circulation of staff, doctors, visitor n patients. The focus on form refinement and visual appeal and the interior finishes. Stages of involvement: Formulation of presentations.Tender packages, working drawings. Discussion with the contractor and checking of shop drawings. @ ASTER Hospital, Sohar - Stationed at site, acting as a project manager.

Care Foundation, Calicut A Health Care facility, focussed on the treatment of Cancer was to be designed. But before that we aksed ourselves ... How are hospitals today ? Are those places happy, comfortable, nurturing ? As a user i am always at a scare when i visit, firstly because i lack the understanding of my illness. That unfamiliarity creates the fear. So now we had the purpose, to design spaces that create familiarity, comfort and ease !!! We looked through things around us... houses, buildings, spaces etc. We were trying to decipher n learn through the search !!!

What is the Nature of “The spaces of Teaching & Learning” ?

27

Institute of Business Studies - Raichur The Campus, currently a non-descript coming together of buildings. The proposed site and buildings have to mediate and work with two specific characteristics. 1. To engage with the existing buildings and make them an active part of the campus. 2.Although it should connect to the main highway on the south, it should provide the desired levels of privacy and segregation to the spaces of learning.

The Design thought evolved through a sensitive understanding of the exisitng campus. What does this campus actually need? .... Well the quantifiable data and requirements are always there .... It was asking what could make this campus more humane friendly ? 1. Integration & Unity of Buildings, within themselves, with nature or simply the way in which people come together. The campus, currently a haphazard unit, is looked at with a delicate insertion. A focal point is created for the campus with the Open Air Theatre, a Canteen, an Auditorium to serve the college and the city’s growing demand for a space for gathering. 2. Working with the Climate: A Hot & Dry context.... The need - Shaded Spaces, Use of trees, Tap the SW winds. 3. What is the Nature of “The spaces of Teaching & Learning” ? “So when and where does a student community thrive” “Do students like surprises or chance encounters” “Do students like spaces where they could be a part of a larger whole or do they want spaces where they would like to sit as loners” ... Perhaps both !!! , here is a certain Duality in the Nature of people & students. People go where people are ..... The answer - Courts or Recesses or Common spaces Different types of courts are created, one along the facade facing the campus, second a hierarchy of courts along the centre of the buildinig, increasing in size as we get closer to the OAT, the third kinds in front of

The City Of Rickshaws The Rickshaw, a Modest Means of Mobility presents a way of dealing with our built environment.

The project investigates Dhaka, Rickshaw capital of the world with over 500,000 rickshaws serving a population of over 16 million and interestingly also among the most densely populated megacities today, to project the implication The Rickshaw has to the built environment. The project uses the Rickshaw, the 3 wheeled human powered vehicle, not only as a means of mobility but as an architectural artefact to study the city. It question the way we live, interface with the activities & streets in our Cities. Dhaka the

The rickshaw has predominantly two types of flows. 1. Deep Interior to main road: Connect the deep interior to the main road or node of public transport 2.Within the interiors: Trips are made from starting point to destination by Rickshaw. For eg. From home to school or home to shopping street etc. The

The City Of Rickshaws

The most or if not One of the most influencung factors that keeps a city ticking is it s infrastructure. Well, at first place people got together so that they could share a certain infrastructure at a cost that could benefit all. Just as how the urban pattern of growth in the US is based out of the model of a Car, similar co-relations can be drawn with the Rickshaw in Dhaka. Yes, Dhaka has not developed in comparison to the European and western world, but there is a significant much to understand in the whole system at play here in Dhaka. There is a symbiotic relationship between the activities along the street and the slow movement of the rickshaw. We notice the Rickshaw being an activator of the street. It presents a physical connection to the environment, a relationship or interface that reduces the rigidity or harsh levels of difference between the built mass and the exterior that makes a rich environment around presenting a humane way in which we perceive things. The Rickshaw due to its characteristics of mobility performs best within certain distances. In Dhaka we notice that when in neighbourhoods, we are about 1.5 to 2.5 kms away from the point of public transport. Although you could walk this distance, the ability of the rickshaw to make quick trips back and forth within the neighbourhood and to the main roads presents its significance. This indirectly induces mixed patterns of building and living within compact neighbourhoods. Rickshaws have an ability to allow for densification within existing footprints. The rickshaw system although informal in nature and is random in terms of movement, there exists an inherent pattern and self-maintained balance to its movement commuting people from the interiors to the main arteries of public transport system. Here, In Dhaka, the rickshaw is a mass transport system in a private scale. The project broadly finds a niche in today’s contexts. If we look at the western world, cars have dominated cities and the way cities are planned, largely for the past 40 years. Large parts of the western world also possess good systems of public transport. Here the rickshaw could play a role to connect you from your doorstep to the node. On the other hand developing economies with cities like Lagos, Jakarta etc. looking to improve their systems of public transportation could use the rickshaw not only as a means of mobility but as a tool to provide employment for the growing migratory population. Culturally, today’s
