HISTORY

Ballet East was built on the foundation of educating students to become leading young artists and professionals in the dance industry. The school was founded in 1970 under the direction of Susan Lyle With strong core values and teaching methodologies, the school has successfully trained numerous generations of professionals and educators.

In 2010, the school changed hands and was transformed into one of the finest training institutions in the southeast. Ballet East, under the Direction of Chelsea Segrete boasts a worldrenowned faculty, established curriculum, enriching experiences and diverse performance opportunities. In 2013, Ballet East relocated to a 5,000 square foot state-of-the-art training facility located in West Palm Beach.

Under Segrete’s leadership, the school quickly gained recognition in the community by presenting classical full-length ballets such as Coppélia, The Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella In addition to the classics, Ballet East provides students with a unique opportunity to perform challenging contemporary and neo-classical works at high-caliber competitions, allowing students to diversify their dance portfolios. Ballet East’s core values of Care, Education, Trust, Excellence, and Community remain the driving force behind the school.

MEET OUR LEADERSHIP TEAM

CHELSEA SEGRETE ANDRÉA GREGORI

Segrete began her early dance training in West Palm Beach, Florida. She attended Jon Mullen’s Performing Arts Center, continued her training at BAK School of the Arts and later graduated from AW Dreyfoos Junior School of the Arts located in West Palm Beach

Segrete went on to earn her Bachelors Degree in Business Administration with a dual major of Management and Marketing from Florida Atlantic University in 2009. Shortly after graduation, Segrete purchased Susan Lyle Studios from Miss Susan Lyle and currently owns and directs the school, now called Ballet East.

Segrete has been honored to choreograph works for students throughout the nation, direct full-length children’s ballets, and coach students for International Competitions such as Youth America Grand Prix and American Dance Competition.

From 2014 - 2016, Segrete served as the rehearsal director for the West Palm Beach children's roles in Miami City Ballet Presents George Balanchine's The Nutcracker®.

Segrete has been recognized nationally for many outstanding achievements. Recent achievements include 2014, 2015, 2016 ADC-IBC Outstanding Choreographer, 2016 UBC Outstanding Choreographer, 2015 YAGP Outstanding Choreographer, 2014 and 2015-work selection to perform at the Youth America Grand Prix Stars of Today Meet the Stars of Tomorrow Gala

Segrete is a member of The International Association for Dance Medicine and Science, holds a certification in Progressing Ballet Technique and is currently training with Lisa Howell's Teacher Training Workshop.

Gregori studied at the renowned Maria Olenewa State School as well as Rio Dance Center in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and spent two years as a Trainee at the Joffrey Ballet in New York City

While still a dancer, Gregori decided to fulfill her passion for teaching, and received extensive training in the Russian Methodology, under the Vaganova System Later on, she became proficient and certified in the Cuban (National Ballet School of Cuba) and English (Royal Academy of Dance) ballet methodologies She is also an ABT® Certified Teacher ABT® National Training Curriculum, Primary through Level 7 & Partnering

Apart from her experience as a dancer and instructor, Gregori received certification in “Psycoballet” (dance therapy) by Dr Georgina Fariñas Garcia, at IPIA (Psychiatric Institute for Childhood and Adolescence) in São Paulo, Brazil. She also earned certification in Progressing Ballet Technique, Alixa Flexibility Method, and has been attending consistently ABT’s yearly workshops - Raising the Barre, covering diverse subjects pertinent to teaching classical dance forms Continuing her education, she attends courses and seminars on Anatomy for Dance, and young children programs.

Throughout her thirty six years of experience as a professional ballet teacher, Mrs. Gregori has prepared numerous students for the Royal Academy of Dance, The Cuban Ballet School and ABT’s exams as well as for national and international ballet competitions winning many prizes She assisted in the production of a variety of fulllength ballets, including Giselle, The Nutcracker, Coppelia, Sleeping Beauty, and staged several suites as well as children’s performances.

CHARLENE SHAW

Shaw began her dance training at age six and has studied with critically acclaimed artists such as David Howard, Melissa Hayden, Finis Young, Merdith Baylis, Suki Schorer, Stanley Williams and Madam Antonia Tumkovsky. As a professional, Shaw danced with the National Ballet of New Jersey where she performed many principal roles in classics such as The Nutcracker, Swan Lake, Giselle, Firebird, Stars and Stripes and Rodeo

Along with being a versatile performer, Shaw has extensive teaching experience and is dedicated to providing a strong technical foundation to her students Shaw's outstanding choreography has won numerous awards and has been recognized on the state and national level

ALAÉRCIO LEITE

Brazilian and Paulist trained in classical dance by the RAD method and student of the ENBC, Vaganova and classical repertoire methods Leite began his studies in 1993 in the State of São Paulo, Brazil. In 1999, Leite became a member of the acclaimed Ballet Guaíra Company in the State of Curitiba, Brazil

Leite began his teaching career in 2000 as a Classical Ballet instructor and coordinator at Escola Paulista de Dança Also a member of the Divinadança Group, as Dancer, later becoming a group teacher and assistant director In the Pavilhão D Group, where today he teaches classical ballet classes, Pas de Deux and Classical repertoires. He teaches classical ballet classes in the Raça Group, one of the top jazz groups in Brazil

FLÁVIA GARCIA NASCIMENTO DAISIA PULZ

Originally from Brazil, Garcia trained and graduated from The National Ballet of Cuba. From 2006 - 2012 Garcia was a member of Dance Theatre of Harlem where she danced principle roles in such ballets as Raymonda, Balanchine's Four Temperaments & Glinka Pas de Trois, Giselle and Le Corsaire She's participated in various competitions, such as Brazil's most acclaimed Joinville Dance Festival, where she won Gold.

In addition to Dance Theatre of Harlem, Garcia danced with Joffrey Ballet 2 and Lazar Ballet NYC. Garcia has been invited to guest at many internationally renown galas such as, Gala of the Stars in the Dominican Republic performing Diana & Acteon with a member of ABT and NYIBC's Gala 2011. Other ballets in her repertoire include Odette/Odile in Swan Lake, Flames of Paris Pas de Deux, Gamazatti of La Bayadere, The River by Alvin Ailey and various original contemporary works. In 2015 she guested at Ballet Ness Ziona ( Israel) where she performed Diana and Acteon and Elie Lazars choreography

Pulz began her dance journey fifteen years ago with Ballet East, formally Susan Lyle Studios. With aspirations to become a professional dancer, she joined Ballet East’s Accelerated Training Program for homeschooling students

Pulz has been recognized through many organizations for her outstanding work in choreography and superior performance qualities. Recent distinctions include Honorable Mention and Merit Scholarship awards from 2017-2019 in Dance Composition/Choreography through the National YoungArts Foundation. In 2019, Pulz was honored to receive the “Aspire Award” for demonstrating passion, hunger and determination in dance through Universal Ballet Competition As a result, Pulz was invited to perform as a guest at the XXIV Intentional Ballet Festival of Miami and performed as a guest with Brazilian Prima Ballerina Ana Botafogo for Ronaldo Fraga’s Eyes Through Brazil

From 2018-2019, Daisia was honored to receive a full merit summer scholarship to world-renowned dance companies, Dance Theatre of Harlem and Lines Contemporary Ballet.

BALLET & CREATIVE MOVEMENT COMBO

Offered to students enrolled in Pre-Primary and Primary

Our Combo classes make learning dance a truly creative experience! Classes encourage the development of coordination, musicality, and self-expression Basic skills will be used to promote body awareness, coordination, and large muscle development. The instructor and student peers interact in a creative and positive environment

BALLET

Offered to students enrolled in Preparatory – Level 9

Ballet is a classical dance form demanding proper lines, grace and precision Ballet introduces dancers codified positions, steps and gestures set in intricate, flowing patterns to create expression through movement.

PRE-POINTE

Offered to female students in Levels 2 and 3

Pre-pointe work is a serious step in ballet training, students are expected to possess a high level of dedication and discipline prior to taking pre-pointe courses In addition, students are required to take 3 ballet technique classes per week Pre- pointe coursework focuses on preparing the student as a whole for the initiation of pointe work.

POINTE

Offered to female students enrolled in Level 3 - Level 9

Our Pointe courses are recommended for experienced students that have completed 2 or more years of pre-pointe work The technique at this level is very demanding, and students must have acquired the proper strength to safely participate in this class.

For experienced dancers, pointe technique is an essential skill in classical training Ballet East Pointe courses are designed to systematically increase security and control to develop technique properly Pointe students will also learn and analyze classical pointe variations from famous ballet repertoire

PAS DE DEUX

Offered to male and female students enrolled in level 5 - Level 9

Our pas de deux courses cover the basics of supported turns, lifts, and couple ensembles This course is designed to build core strength and confidence while manipulating, lifting and supporting each other in a kinetic relationship

CLASSICAL VARIATIONS

Offered to female students enrolled in Level 5- Level 9, male students work on variation elements in jump courses

Our classical variations courses offer advanced dancers an opportunity to learn variations from classical repertoire such as Nutcracker, Sleeping Beauty, Swan Lake, Don Quixote, etc. Classical variations courses place emphasis on developing the technical and practical skills necessary to adapt to a wide variety of classic repertoire, from corps de ballet work to the principal roles

CHARACTER

Offered to students enrolled in Level 1- Level 9

Character dance is the stylized representation of a traditional folk or national dance, mostly from European countries, and uses movements and music which have been adapted for the theater

Character dance is an integral part of classical ballet repertoire and assists in the development of musicality, artistry, and coordination

This course incorporates certain stamping exercises, so it is important for the students to have the proper shoes to protect the heel

JAZZ

Offered to students enrolled in Level 1- Level 3

Jazz focuses on learning the isolations of the body, improving performance quality and developing complex rhythms and patterns

Jazz has been recognized as a major form of musical expression in traditional and popular music. Jazz is a fantastic introduction for students that are interested in taking contemporary classes in the future

CONTEMPORARY

Offered to students enrolled in Level 3- Level 9

Contemporary is a blend of ballet and modern dance It builds a strong centre and combines precision leg work with fluidity of the torso Contemporary dance encourages self-expression, natural movement, exploration and personal interpretation

STRENGTH AND STRETCH

Offered to students enrolled in Preparatory 2 – Level 9

This course will teach students how to execute certain exercises and stretches properly before and after class to help prevent injury, by making their muscles more pliable. In addition, students will work on improving posture, increasing flexibility, range of motion, and strengthen the muscles This class will aim at increasing the core body strength essential for a dancer

BOYS JUMPS

Offered to male students enrolled in Level 3 - Level 9

Boys jump classes focus on the physical strength, power, and brilliance of male dancing with particular emphasis on elevation, beats and much more

PROGRESSING BALLET TECHNIQUE

Offered to students enrolled in Level 1 - Level 9

Progressing Ballet Technique is an innovative program developed by Marie Walton-Mahon for students to understand the depth of training muscle engagement Progressing Ballet Technique helps the dancers understand the use of muscle memory to improve core stability, weight placement and alignment This class incorporates an exercise ball provided by Ballet East Parents will be notified if there are any additional materials that may be required to purchase

(ages 10 - 13)

The Junior Academy serves as an important stepping stone in a child's cognitive and kinesthetic development. Students are encouraged to channel their focus and creativity in a formal class setting. The curriculum provides students with the proper fundamentals that build the confidence and strength that will be required for pre-pointe, pointe work (Junior 2), and material that is specific for male students.

Core courses that are offered to further assist the proper development of each student’s foundation include: strength and stretch, jazz, character, progressing ballet technique, contemporary, boy’s jumps, pre-pointe, and pointe.

Junior Academy students that are serious about their training are offered the unique opportunity to audition for the Ballet East Youth Ensemble performance group.

ACADEMY

PRE-PROFESSIONAL ACADEMY

(ages 13+)

Students that reach the pre-professional levels of the program curriculum prepare for the next step of their career by refining their technique and artistry as well as learning elements of teaching and choreography. Students work towards perfecting full length classical and contemporary repertoire individually and as a corps.

Full classical and contemporary repertoire work, variations, pas de deux, pointe work, progressing ballet technique, strength and stretch, character, rehearsals, and men’s work are all core courses that pre professional students will benefit from taking on a weekly basis.

Pre-Pro Academy students that are serious about their training are offered the unique opportunity to audition for the Ballet East Youth Ensemble performance group and the Accelerated Training Program.

BE WELL PROGRAM ADULT CLASSES

Open Adult Classes

Because we are passionate about the wellbeing of our community, the BE Well program provides a variety of fitness classes to adults of all ages and different experience levels. Specifically crafted to develop strength and increase flexibility, the BE Well program will produce a happy mind and body by boosting energy, enhancing memory, and improving overall health

Performance Groups (BEYE)

Students that exhibit superior merit and dedication are considered for the Youth Ensemble. Students that are chosen for this program are provided with the unique opportunity to advance their training and artistry by participating in additional performances, elite international competitions, photoshoots, and exclusive masterclasses. The members of BEYE serve as ambassadors for the school and receive exclusive perks throughout the season.

EAST YOUTH ENSEMBLE ACCELERATED TRAINING PROGRAM

Designed for aspiring professional dancers that homeschool

This program offers a limited number of Pre-Professional Academy students the opportunity to train in a rigorous and intimate setting. Students participate in additional courses and one-to-one training that take place daily in addition to their evening courses. The accumulation of courses allow students to undertake an upwards of 25 hours of training per week. Covering all aspects of classical and contemporary training (dance history, music theory, choreography, pedagogy) this program prepares students for a professional career in dance.*

AND ACTIVITIES

Educational Workshops and Masterclass Series

At various times throughout the season, aspiring young dancers can take advantage of exclusive educational workshops and masterclasses with our expert faculty and international guest instructors.

Summer and Winter Intensives/Workshops

Held up to eight weeks in summer and one week in winter, serious students of all ages are invited to Ballet East to immerse themselves into our elite training program with the world-renown BE faculty and guest instructors.

Audition Experience

This invaluable event provides students ages 9+ with the opportunity to experience a simulated audition to prepare them for future auditions, competitions, and conventions.

Social Events and Excursions

Scheduled throughout the season, these events allow students and parents to bond in a social and educational way.

Birthday Parties

One weekend of each month, students are welcome to celebrate their birthday and invite their friends to an exclusive festivity full of surprises.

Semi-Annual Performances

Each season BE produces two full scale productions for student families and our community to view our beautiful artform for entertainment and educational purposes. Additional in-studio presentations allow students to further develop their artistry in an intimate setting.
