LANDFILL 5

WHAT ARE WE THROWING AWAY?

This graphic shows what the average Ballina shire household puts in their landfill bin. Landfilling waste is the most expensive option, least environmentally sound, and results in resources being lost instead of recycled. You can help reduce what’s sent to landfill by separating your waste, finding out more about what can be recycled where. Check out our A-Z guide on pages 10 and 11!

WHAT about

PLASTIC BAGS?

Instead of sending soft plastics like bread bags and rice/pasta packets to landfill, they can be collected and dropped off at Coles and Woolworths REDcycle collection bins. They are then made into useful things like park benches and cycle pathways!

For more information about what to recycle at REDcycle visit www.redcycle.net.au

Your home’s wheelie bins make it easy to reduce what we send to landfill. By recycling and composting, we help look after the environment and use the materials we already have.

OUR RECYCLING BINS Recycling is sorted into all the different recyclable materials and sent to factories that make them into new items. For example, glass can be made into road base and plastics can be made into clothing!

Because we like to avoid waste and reuse and recycle where we can, here are some handy tips you could try today!

Bring a low waste lunch to school with reusable containers

OUR ORGANICS BINS Food and garden waste is composted in giant rows. The compost is then used by local farmers and gardeners to nourish our soils and grow more food.

Make art and craft projects with recycled materials Donate clean clothes and toys you no longer use to a second-hand shop Say no to disposable straws

where does it go? Cut out each of the items provided and sort the recycling, organics and landfill items by pasting them on the correct bin. Hint: There are a couple of items that belong somewhere else! Which ones?

OUR LANDFILL BINS We like to call it ‘the bin of last resort’ because anything placed inside is buried in a big hole. This means they can’t be recycled into something else. What about plastic bags? Instead of sending soft plastics to landfill, they can be collected and dropped off at Coles and Woolworths REDcycle collection bins. They are made into things like park benches and cycle pathways! Let’s have less going to landfill!
