GIRL-ABOUT-TOWN Emily Lullo has been spotted excessively carousing throughout the Downtown area all summer long. Whether enjoying a girls night dinner sharing tapas at Global Grill, hitting the dance floor for a wee-hours groove sesh at Phineas Phogg’s, or bopping to some New Orleans brass tunes at Vinyl last month, this self-proclaimed P-list celebrity has been racking up face time along with hefty tabs at every hotspot within a six block radius of Palafox. While her accountant, which may or may not be what she refers to her bank teller as, might scoff at the high roller status she’s clearly achieving at Downtown’s many eateries and watering holes, Lullo prefers to think of her rainmaking ways as her contribution to the local community’s

economy, a stimulus of sorts from which all participants benefit. However, with the many demands of modern men and women and their respective pocketbooks, knowing Downtown’s best deals and steals is the only way to eat and drink like a local celeb without the need for an A-list paycheck. This issue of DTC features our annual Specials list, complete with every happy hour, 2-for1 and house special in Downtown on any given day in an easy-to-tear-outand-hang-on-your-fridge format. Don’t leave home for a night on the town without it! As always, this issue also includes your Official Gallery Night Guide. With its position cemented as the place to see and be seen for an extravaganza of art, music, food and dubious street fashion, Gallery Night remains a premier Downtown event. Inside sources say the monthly gathering is now attracting out-of-towners for overnight stays and the coveted status of a “heads in beds” event. Throw on your best Gallery Night outfit, document your sartorial choices on Instagram, then head out with our guide and all the other essentials you’ll need for a perfect night (see page 20). While you partake of all the night’s glamorous offerings, make sure to support the great local venues that participate in Gallery Night as well as the local and regional artists that make it what it is. And, above all, don’t forget to strike a pose when the DTC paparazzo approaches. xoxo, Lullo

The More The Merrier

How many restaurants along Palafox Street is too many? The more the merrier is a less scientific answer to the question. Many restaurants, especially in environments like our Downtown, are finding that restaurant clusters help guarantee a level of traffic that might not be achieved if each business were a solo dining concept in an area. Restaurant clustering creates the kind of vibrancy that retail thrives on and that excites the customer. In the customer’s mind, if one location has a wait, they can just walk down the street or next door to another.

Remember the popularity of the progressive dinner from times past? Downtown provides an exciting opportunity to have drinks and appetizers while you watch the game, then on to dinner for a more private affair, followed by dessert and coffee or cocktails at yet another location. Success attracts success and a study of the big wins mounted by early adopters like New York Nick’s was a compelling reason for others to take note and want a piece of the pie - at least the pizza pie. Taproom and newcomers Khon’s Asian Bistro and V. Paul’s is a cluster that fits almost all appetites. The South end of Palafox Street is keeping pace. Bodacious Brew’s breakfast menu is quickly becoming the taste of the town, coupled with Jackson’s, So Gourmet, Carmen’s, Bodacious Olive and Al Fresco – Fresh Air Dining - maybe the most obvious example of a successful cluster. Brick & Spoon, known for their brunch menu, will be joining this cluster in the fall. With strong independents to support retailers like Seville Quarter, Subway, Adonna’s, Tin Cow, Four Season’s Eatery, Polonza, Jordan Valley, Mackey’s Mud House and Grille and World of Beer’s new menuDowntown really does have it all and something for every diner. Bon appetit!

Quayside Art Gallery

MEMBERS ARE THRILLED to be located in Pensacola’s historic district, enthusiastic about being the oldest and largest member-owned art gallery in the US, and they are particularly pleased about their founding history. Quayside has now been operational for 40 years, an accomplishment they saluted by hosting a founder’s ceremony on July 13. The ceremony commemorated Quayside’s longevity by sharing with attendants the history of the gallery’s younger years while offering good wine, desserts—and thanks to the chef who baked them, flawless artichoke mini-quiche. Charter member Laurie Flynn explained how in the summer of 1973, the artists who would become Quayside’s founders, had their first meeting about forming the organization. “I remember coming in and thinking, there is so much energy in this room! I could almost see the aura of energy,” said Flynn. This was when Quayside was still in the idea stage, before they opened their first location. Eventually they moved into what is now their current location on East Zarragossa Street, where they had to mold the building into the finished product that the gallery is today. The artists exchanged their paintbrushes for tool belts and hardhats to do the manual labor on the much disheveled place they had purchased. “We did all the work ourselves and the inside was a complete mess. I’ll never forget it,” admitted Esther Tuck. They had to renovate once more after Hurricane Ivan flooded and damaged the gallery, but the members always managed to come together to see Quayside through each difficulty. Joy Sims, chairman of the founder’s board, illustrated Quayside’s uniqueness of being operated solely by its contributing artists. “All of our members rent wall space or shelf space, so they have exhibits at all times. Every six to eight weeks we have a show here where every one of our members can bring one or two pieces. We also have special exhibits by our members where one to four members can hold a show in our east gallery,” explained Sims. August visitors will have the opportunity to explore the works of Manuel Rivas, Kate Owens, and Dan Baradon at Quayside’s Artist’s Perspective. And coming up in September is the Doug Walton art workshop. Apart from these featured artists, Quayside is always flexible for guided tours that are free for groups and organizations.

Karianne Payton discovers all the MYSTERIOUS, MAGICAL and PARANORMAL happenings of Pensacola’s fi5th annual PARA CON.

MAKE SURE YOU start designing your outfit for the Pensacola Para Con because it is right around the corner. Para Con is an annual sci-fi convention that started in 2010. According to Ericka Boussarhane, promoter of the event, she brought it to Pensacola because there was nothing like it here. She wanted to start something that would not only attract celebrities for people to meet but something that played into our historic locations as well. The convention celebrates a variety of genres and interests like sci-fi, fantasy, gaming, costuming, anime and many others. Guests include Lou Ferrigno, otherwise known as The Hulk, as well as guests from Baywatch, Power Rangers, Ghostbusters, Star Trek, and many more! The events will start Wednesday, Aug. 6 at 7 pm; there will be a We Are Batman screening at the Carmike Cinemas on W Street. On Thursday, Aug. 7 at 7 pm there will be another We Are Batman screening at the Movies 4 on Gulf Breeze Parkway. We Are Batman was created by Brett Culp and examines how we all have an inner Batman and our inner strength. The proceeds from these screenings will go to the Special Olympics Florida. On Friday, Aug. 8, there will be a dinner for “Super Hero Day” at Ollie’s Neighborhood Grill on W. Nine Mile Road at 7 pm. Saturday, Aug. 9, brings the real excitement. The Pensacola Fair Grounds Expo Hall gates open at 9:30 am for the VIP and 10 am for general admission for the Para Con and it will end at 6 pm. At 8 pm the “Geek Rock Revolution” starts at Vinyl. Tickets are $15 online and $20 at the door. 8

The Plaid Jackets, Kiss tribute band, Shadow Clone, First Jason and Wyzae as ZombG will all be performing. Sunday, Aug. 10, wraps up Para Con. Gates open again at 9:30 am for the VIP and 10 pm for general admission. This is the last day, so make it count! There are a variety of different packages available at pensacolaparacon.com for purchase that include t-shirts, bags, event tickets and party bus tickets. General admission tickets are also available at the doors on Saturday and Sunday. A portion of the money raised will go to EscaRosa Coalition on the Homeless (ECOH), Special Olympics Florida, Making Strides Against Breast Cancer (MSABC), Arc Gateway and Ronald McDonald House. Also the Epilepsy Foundation Florida will have a stand inside taking donations. This year Para Con will stand out from all the other years. Boussarhane said this year they have more celebrities than they have ever had before. Many of the celebrities are very well-known. “This year focuses on the inner hero,” said Boussarhane. “Two of our guests are hearing impaired and several of the guests have children with autism. So I looked at this year and what is different would be the charity focus and the focus to let everyone know that despite how you’re born they are superheroes.” Make sure not to miss this action-filled event. THUNDER ON THE GULF FUN, COMPETITION AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT COME TO DOWNTOWN’S SHORES. BY JOSH NEWBY ON AUG. 24, tens of thousands of people and dozens of super powerful speedboats will converge on Pensacola as part of the annual Thunder on the Gulf super boat grand prix. Usually held exclusively in Orange Beach, this year extends the fun outdoor event and economic driver to our own shores. Plaza de Luna is the best place to watch the boats race up and down the salt water raceway, which extends from Maritime Park to the Pensacola Bay Bridge. “We’ve wanted to do this for years,” said Kathy Melson, the event coordinator. “We’ve worked with the county and the city to bring it here to Pensacola. It’s beneficial to the races because they get to participate in two races—Orange Beach and Pensacola—for the price and effort of one transport. The event coincides with the Naval Air Station’s 100th anniversary, and we are having a street party that weekend with boats along Palafox. It’s going to be a crazy time.” That’s right: in addition to the thunderous sound of these world-class machines and all the excitement and adrenaline that accompanies it, there will be a bevy of other activities to complement the fun. On Aug. 23, a bikini contest will be held in Plaza de Luna at 3 pm, followed by a boat parade through Downtown at 6 pm and a street party and fireworks display at 7 pm.

14 Aug 2014 downtowncrowd.com 14

Aug 2014 downtowncrowd.com

The nationally sanctioned race gets its start at 1 pm the next day, on Aug. 24, followed by a second race at 3 pm and awards ceremony at 6 pm. While many in Orange Beach have to pay a premium price for good seats, those in Pensacola can experience the action free of charge. The 180 miles-per-hour boats will tear through the water just 200 yards from land, allowing for multiple viewing spots all along Downtown’s shoreline. This year’s Thunder on the Gulf is shaping up to be even more successful than in years past, with 18 boats already signed up, more than last year’s 12. The GCPA (Gulf Coast Powerboat Association), a nonprofit organization, produces the annual event in tandem with the famous Flora-Bama restaurant and bar. While sponsorships fund the production of the race, a portion of merchandise sales goes to charities. Since Thunder on the Gulf’s inception, more than $150,000 has been donated to various charities, such St. Jude’s this year and last year. Sponsoring businesses are guaranteed to get big bang for their buck, with marketing, advertising and social media opportunities available. Earlier this year, the Southeast Tourism Society named Thunder on the Gulf a top 20 event, placing it in a distinguished group of events recommended by travel industry experts.

1. As we learned last month, freak “Biblical” downpours can strike at any moment. Be ready. 2. The other possible weather condition is blazing sunshine. You’ll need these to shield your peepers or avoid eye contact with undesirables. 3. The effort of removing your ID from your wallet every time you enter a bar is quickly taxing. Save your energy for scoping out free drinks with this ID-holding lanyard. 4. Make note of upcoming birthdays, bar mitzvahs or quinceaneras and support local artists and businesses. 5. No matter how long you spent perfectly curling your coif, you must face the fact that you’ll eventually end up pulling it back into a messy ponytail once the neck sweat sets in. 6. DTC Gallery Night Guide. Obvi. 7. Document the fun with your Instagram account #DTC #upsideofflorida #gallerynight #wigglewigglewiggle. 8. Downtown Pensacola has a fever, and the only prescription is more cowbell.

by Josh Newby Guardians of the Galaxy

What I’ll be spending my $8 on:

Sin City: A Dame to Die For In theaters: August 22 Starring: Jessica Alba, Eva Green, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Mickey Rourke, Bruce Willis What I got from the preview: A town with constant rain, bleak skylines and a thin, low-hanging fog of cigarette smoke is home to neo-noir confrontations between hard-boiled citizens and snaky lords of the criminal underworld. With gritty, black-andwhite cinematography, punctuated by bold bursts of red blood, tough guys and often tougher girls, and a classic story of revenge and redemption, this movie promises more of what made the first one a pulp action classic. Most notable for: It is not often that hyper-violent graphic novels get made into R-rated comic-style movies with the help of the former’s author. It’s even less often that it happens twice. The graphic novel’s penman, Frank Miller, helps direct this installment alongside the original’s Robert Rodriguez. Unqualified critical observation: I was a young, impressionable, buggy-pushing 17-year-old when the original premiered, and it was one of the first movies I can remember that made a lasting impression on me, not just because of its steroidal violence and pulpy excessiveness, but because it placed style over narrative in a way that distilled neither to uncompromising, extreme, brilliant effect. Let’s hope it wasn’t an anomaly.

In theaters: August 1 Starring: Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Vin Diesel What I got from the preview: A rag-tag group of space bandits may be the galaxy’s only hope for survival (and our only hope for an August 1 superhero movie) in this Marvel tale adapted from a comic book series that no one heard of or cared about a few years ago. Most notable for: In a time and place with such superhero movie overload, it is perhaps not notable or surprising at all that, after pumping hundreds of millions of dollars into A- and B-level superhero film adaptations, Marvel has stooped to the C-level comics. That there is such talent in front of and behind the camera is a bit more surprising. Unqualified critical observation: My friend(s) tells me this will be the sleeper hit of the summer and create a whole new franchise woven seamlessly into the Avengers saga. Well, he’s not writing this (because he’s a banker and has a terrible way with words); I am. And I think that this movie looks silly to the point of unintentional and pointless to the point of unnecessary. You won’t see me at the theaters, but enjoy the movie, everyone else in America who will make Marvel even more money than they already have.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

In theaters: August 8 Starring: Megan Fox, Johnny Knoxville, Will Arnett, William Fichnter What I got from the preview: You know the story: Japanese mutant rat Splinter finds four baby turtles in the sewers who have been infected with a primordial ooze that gives them superhumanturtle abilities. He instructs them in the martial arts until they are ready to fight crime on the streets above. Pretty typical stuff. Well, this movie has nothing to do with that. The turtles are aliens, or something, tasked with foiling an evil government plot and making the audience hate themselves, or something. Most notable for: Normally, I’d be excited that my favorite childhood cartoon characters were getting a big-budget treatment hopefully worthy of their awesome origins, but two words defeat my hope and make me curse the day I ever laid eyes on those beautiful, reptilian, misunderstood creatures: Michael Bay. Unqualified critical observation: I might be able to forgive the fact that the insufferable Megan Fox is playing intrepid reporter April O’Neil, or that the turtles look like terrifying CG incarnations of a nightmare, but—no, actually, those are my problems with this movie. Condescending and damning though my predictions for this movie are, I’ll probably see it. But only at matinee price!

The Giver

In theaters: August 15 Starring: Jeff Bridges, Meryl Streep, Odeya Rush, Brenton Thwaites, Katie Holmes What I got from the preview/book: Alright, so in a utopian future, everyone is basically drugged up so they feel no suffering, have no freedom, and are aware of no interpersonal differences. Don’t worry, this story isn’t quite the thinly-veiled and delusionally paranoid Ann Rand homage. You see, every generation one person is implanted with memories of the former world in order to keep those memories alive. That person is called the Giver. Well one day, this kid discovers the Giver and begins learning from him what a lie this current world is. It’s a really awesome, twisty story with impossible choices and a Newberry Medal-winning conclusion. Trust me. Most notable for: Dat cast! I always honestly pictured Jeff Bridges (or the Rock, but only because he’s so awesome) as the Giver. He’s so wise, likeable, and curmudgeonly (oh, Jeff!). And Meryl Streep! You literally could not ask for a better actress. And Taylor Swift! Well, let’s just hope she’s grown past those Valentine’s Day-level acting chops. Unqualified critical observation: Young adult fiction has been getting the big-screen treatment for quite some time now, since Harry Potter, to varying effect. This year alone has about eight adaptations, last time I checked. Be not fatigued though, fellow moviegoers, this own will be worth your time and money.

The Expendables 3

In theaters: August 15 Starring: Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Antonio Banderas, Wesley Snipes, Mel Gibson What I got from the preview: Yikes. There’s a lot of explosions, dad jokes, machine guns, slow-motion running, and bro humor. In between all that, there’s some story about the group’s co-founder turned arms dealer who wants to destroy the team. Most notable for: Dat cast! But in a different way than The Giver. Every aging blowhard actor who has ever been remotely associated with Hollywood action is in this, to amusing albeit depressing effect. Unqualified critical observation: I didn’t see the first two, but that’s not going to stop me from not seeing this one either!

Historic

District

When you file into the Pensacola Little Theatre and settle into your seat as the din of the growing audience buzzes throughout the cavernous space, you’re usually thinking only of your impending viewing experience. The house lights dim, the crowd quiets, the curtain rises and a seamless work of entertainment unfolds on the stage in front of you. What you don’t often notice is the behind-the-scenes efforts that involve innumerable separate, moving pieces that must come together as a integrated unit. A small staff and a massive and dedicated cast of volunteers spend about 80,000 hours annually putting shows together, says artistic director Jerry Ahillen. Here’s a behind the scenes look at the many pieces that fall together to create the hyperorganized chaos that is a PLT production.

SETTING THE STAGE Before a season starts, the artistic committee is meeting monthly with artistic director Jerry Ahillen to plan the shows for the year. “They bring suggestions to me about shows that they would like to see on our stage and I do research on shows and other community theatres, what they’re doing,” he says. From there the group plans a season, sometimes with a theme in mind, and sometimes not, but always with a mix of offerings. “We try to bookend it with musicals and then have a comedy, a tragedy, drama, a mystery,” he says. “We try to shake it up a little bit.” Directors are sought and the plays are discussed from a conceptual standpoint, but the artistic director’s work doesn’t end there. Ahillen often sits in on auditions and he’s on hand for directors or stage managers that need support. As a sometimes-director himself, Ahillen is able to mentor up-and-coming leaders, something he intends to focus on in the 78th season as he takes a season off from the director’s chair.

BLINDED BY THE LIGHTING DESIGNER While you may think the lighting designer simply flips those blinding beams on or off, there’s much more to the job. Jordan Wiggins, lighting designer for Sound of Music began a rigorous research process weeks in advance to learn about the show and ascertain his lighting concept. He worked with technical director Jim Culton as well as director Kathy Holsworth, presenting her with his ideas for the lighting. He used paintings that conveyed the moods he wanted and other media to present his concept. Then he got to work plotting, which is determining what light positions convey those moods. Wiggins mixes and matches different washes to create different moods on 18 distinct areas of the stage for The Sound of Music.

MISTRESS OF THE PROPS

THE PLAYERS Anyone can audition for a chance to shine onstage at PLT. Ahillen says the range of plays offer well-known and beloved characters as well as roles a thespian can truly delve into. “That’s another thing I try to establish with my seasons is not only giving patrons what they want but also have something our actors can really sink their teeth in and give them the chance to grow and explore,” Ahillen says. If you’re a musical theatre enthusiast, prepare 16 bars of a song that shows off your vocal skills, and bring an accompanying CD or sheet music to auditions. Also be prepared to learn some dance moves. For non-musical plays—known as “straight” shows in the biz—auditions are generally a cold reading and perusal scripts can be checked out at the theatre. Rehearsals last about six weeks for a straight play and eight for a musical. The ever-fluid process starts with reading and blocking, or planning where actors stand and move onstage, and choreography and singing for musicals. The final week of rehearsals is called tech week, when all the technical crew join to tweak the final product.

BACKSTAGE BOSS: STAGE MANAGER The director may be the overall person in charge of a play, but backstage the stage manager is running the show, armed with a script with every cue, a headset to call the shots, and a TV monitor that lets her see onstage. Carol Mankins, who’s been a stage manager for about 60 shows at PLT, says she first joins the actors during tech week, but her work starts well before that. “Months prior to that I start getting the crew together—props people, light guys, if we need somebody on the rail, enough people to move set pieces if it’s a movable set,” she says of her team. Mankins says above all her job is making sure everything is safe, and next is calling cues. Lighting cues, set changes, orchestra cues when there are musicians in the pit below the stage, and curtain cues after the actors take their bows to the roar of applause.

The prop mistress starts by reading a script to discern what large and small items will be necessary for each scene, and some scripts include a list of all the necessary props, hilariously called a “propaly.” Jenny Andrews is a first-time prop mistress for Sound of Music, so she shared the job with Holly Busse. Props come from a variety of sources, like the in-house prop room, antique shops or actors’ homes, or borrowed from PSC or UWF’s theatre departments, as were the Sound of Music’s gun and microphone, respectively. Others are created from scratch by PLT’s props guild, who go to great lengths to make perfect props. Aug 2014 “We had one of the members of props guild make newspapers with Hitler on the front and German wordsdowntowncrowd.com so it looks authentic,” Busse25says.
