MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR I am pleased to present the Fall 2014 Parks & Recreation Activity Guide. The Parks & Recreation Department is operated through the taxes you pay to the City and is considered one of your City services. I hope you will be able to enjoy one of our nearly 200 programs or visit one of our 92 parks in the City! Whether you are looking for recreational programming, hours of operation, or the closest park, we have something for you. Providing quality programming and services and a safe, aesthetically pleasing park system is the commitment we make every day to families and residents of Pensacola. We take great pride in providing services that enhance quality of life and we strive to make our community a great place to live, work, and play. Make time for yourself and family to take a walk through one of our parks. Play on the playgrounds, walk, jog, or bike on the paths, go golfing, play tennis, visit one of our resource centers and participate in a recreational class or program. There is no better time to invest in a healthy future than today. We invite you to share your comments with us concerning our parks and programs. Your ideas will be appreciated and given thoughtful consideration.

Our mission is to respond to the academic, social and physical needs of each child through the appropriate involvement of community, youth and staff. Our program consists of the 4Bs (Bible, Books, Ball and Balance). We are committed to the development of the full potential of each child. mentoring programs. With the help of over 150 volunteers, afterschool and summer programs are provided for over 900 youth annually. SYSA also hosts special events, such as Living the Dream, to highlight those who have made significant contributions to our community. We are part of one of the largest annual African American events in Pensacola, the annual Soul Bowl. Our youth are given the opportunity to meet and work with those who have participated in youth sports programs and have made it to the NFL and WNBA, such as Doug Baldwin, Trent Richardson, Alfred Morris and Michelle Snow.

SPECIAL EVENTS GUIDE For generations people built social networks centered around their communities. They experienced camaraderie and a sense of kinship to the people they lived near. With our increasingly fast paced society it is becoming simultaneously easier and harder to connect to people and places. This paradox comes from that massive power of the internet to spread knowledge and connect like-minded people. Totally online social networks are vibrant communities in and of themselves; places to share ideas, find acceptance, or just find old friends. The internet as a whole allows our society to look off to distant horizons and discover what people or life is like all over the planet. However, it can be easy to forget to connect to your own community, and it is vitally important for everyone to do so. Community builds appreciation for your neighbors and increases a sense of belonging, satisfying that basic need to feel like you are home. Festivals, special events, fundraisers, and 5Ks offer a chance to build and interact with real world social networks. They are an opportunity for likeminded people to get together and have fun together. Community events should be called community-building events because they bring people together to foster a sense of belonging. Often in Pensacola, our community events teach us wonderful things about the people that we live near, and even about the history of the culturally diverse city we all live. Over the last decade, downtown Pensacola has ignited a Renaissance. Palafox Street was recently recognized as one of 10 Great Streets in 2013 by the American Planning Association. One of the things that makes Palafox great is that it plays host to a number of signature community events. It doesn’t hurt that Seville Square, home to the Great Gulf Coast Arts Festival for over 30 years, Evenings in Olde Seville for over 30 years, and fantastic
new events like Smokin’ in the Square held the first weekend in March, is just blocks away from the main drag. Events like these provide an economic influx to our community, and that’s great. But more importantly, they provide Pensacolians with an opportunity, a reason, to come out and say hello; to eat delicious local food, to support local charitable organizations, and to see our beautiful city. It isn’t just the downtown area that’s thriving. Pensacola is known for having one of the South’s most active running communities, and it’s not hard to imagine, with at least 10 major established 5K-15Ks and one marathon. Imagine combining a way to interact with people that share your interests, challenging yourself to do better, getting exercise and even competing, and then ending the whole thing with a party. That pretty much sums up the 5K experience, except, somewhere in there you’ve built a slightly bigger social network; or maybe, running in a crowd of 16,000 people, for a little while you felt like you were part of something bigger than just yourself. You felt like you were part of community. Special events instill in us a sense of love of place, our place. They push us into new experiences and they offer a place to meet up with old friends. Sure, big special events, festivals, fundraisers, and 5Ks are important because they bring in a burst of positive economic impact. They are more important because they help us build long lasting relationships with the place we call home.
