MESSAGE FROM PARKS SUPERINTENDENT This is an amazing time of year in Pensacola to Get Out & Play in your parks and recreation facilities. The trees are blooming and the grass is greener. The sun’s warmth invites people to stay outdoors longer to enjoy nature. Parks are created to serve the public with places to gather with friends and family, to play, exercise, and get closer to nature. As you visit your parks and recreation facilities this spring and summer we hope that you will take the time to enjoy and appreciate the natural beauty these spaces provide. If you feel so moved we also hope you’ll want to help us keep our parks beautiful for all to enjoy. We have volunteer opportunities for individual park projects, or you and your group can adopt one of the City’s 93 parks on a more long-term basis. Look further in this guide for opportunities to enjoy the parks, pools, resource centers and special events to see what makes Pensacola such a great place to Get Out & Play. Seville Square Gazebo gets a Makeover in Time for Spring Events The Seville Square gazebo is looking more youthful these days after a beautification project was completed just in time for the spring-time event and wedding season. New handrails and decorative ironwork were installed to update the gazebo and brick pavers were installed on the north side to provide a larger and more attractive space for weddings and events. The ADA-accessible ramp was also relocated for improved access to the gazebo and the electrical access panels now have a secure enclosure to help prevent vandalism and unauthorized use. These improvements were made with funds from the local option sales tax. Seville Square was part of the original Spanish settlement of Pensacola and was first laid out as a public square by the British in the 1760’s. Due to its historic charm and natural beauty, it is one of the most popular parks within the City of Pensacola.
34 www.playpensacola.com
The gazebo was first constructed and dedicated in honor of Mary Turner Rule Reed in 1981 and has been used for many of Pensacola’s most popular events such as Evenings in Old Seville Square, Smokin’ in the Square, Jazz Fest, Pensacola Seafood Festival, Art in the Park and the Gulf Coast Arts Festival. A complete list of City parks and their amenities is available on the Parks and Recreation Department’s website at PlayPensacola.com.
