MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR When I was running for Mayor a few years ago, I studied the 8-80 City philosophy. This is the idea that if you create a city that is good for an 8 year old and good for an 80 year old, you will create a successful city for everyone. With 93 parks, our city encourages physical activity and enjoyable places for everyone to walk, bike and be active as a part of their daily lives. Sharing beautiful public spaces strengthens our sense of community and nurtures our happiness. It is this unprecedented quality of life that makes Pensacola the best city to live, work and play. I encourage you to take advantage of the programs in this Summer’s Neighborhood Services Activity Guide. I think you will find exciting programs for citizens across all walks of life. Ashton J. Hayward, III Mayor

SPOT LIGHT PARTNER – SPECIAL OLYMPICS The office for Special Olympics Florida- Escambia and Santa Rosa counties, is housed in the Bayview Resource Center. The space is donated by the City of Pensacola. In Escambia and Santa Rosa counties, Special Olympics provides year-round sports training and competition to children and adults with intellectual disabilities, at no cost to the athlete or their caregiver, as a means to achieve physical fitness, self-esteem, socialization skills, and the life skills necessary to be productive, respected and contributing members of their communities. Founded by the late Eunice Kennedy Shriver, Special Olympics is the world’s largest program of sports training and athletic competition for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, serving 3.7 million people in more than 170 countries. In Escambia and Santa Rosa
counties, over 300 athletes train and compete year round, in 13 different team and individual sports of their choice, including Soccer, Tennis, Volleyball, Bocce, Track & Field events, Stand Up Paddle, Sailing, Aquatics, Golf, Bowling, Powerlifting, Gymnastics and Basketball. Locally, we engage more than 200 community volunteers each year and are always happy to welcome new volunteers for service on year-round committees, coaches and event-day volunteers. Founded in 1972, Special Olympics Florida is a certified 501 (c)(3) not-for-profit organization funded solely through the generosity of individuals, businesses and civic groups. This support allows Special Olympics to never charge the athlete or their families a fee for participation.

THE UPSIDE of FLORIDA
THE UPSIDE of FLORIDA ACTIVITY GUIDE
RUN FOR YOUR HEALTH As warm weather approaches one may feel the need to get outside and enjoy our fantastic parks and the recreation opportunities that our city offers. There is truly an activity, whether organized or not, that everyone can enjoy. From playing Frisbee with a friend to playing in an organized soccer game to sitting on a bench eating an ice cream cone, being in good physical condition will make every activity more enjoyable. Yes, even eating ice cream is better when you’re fit. Running is by far one of the best ways to develop excellent physical health. Now, I’m not biased at all in suggesting this, despite the fact that I am a runner, have always been a runner, and will most likely always be a runner, I’m suggesting it because, well, it’s the truth. The cardiovascular health that one develops through regular impact producing aerobic exercise (aka running) is not possible, nor as easily accessible through other activities. In short, you could spend 30-45 minutes a day, four to six days a week running and you will be forgiven the sins of overeating, smoking, living a sedentary lifestyle for decades, or you, fill in the blank. It really is that simple. Here comes the challenging part for you…your BUT, no, not the thing that you sit on. I personally have lots of buts; however, the best way to get them out of the way is by taking the first step forward and believing that anything is possible despite your situation. Here are a few: I would start running, BUT I’ve got a bad knee. I would like to run, BUT I don’t have enough time. I would run, BUT I don’t like it. I would run, BUT (insert your situation here). I agree that there may be some extreme situations that may cause you to modify the run 4-6 days a week plan, but that would be in very few cases. I know, I don’t understand your exact situation, but after 35 years of running and coaching and working with athletes of all levels and backgrounds it’s rare to find a situation that is not insurmountable. So, how do you get started and what are the benefits? Start by walking for a few minutes a few times per week. Do less than you think
you should and less than you think you can, just be consistent. Runners get injured at alarmingly high rates primarily because they don’t allow their bodies to adapt to the increased stresses of running more and faster. Go back and read that sentence again. That statement has held true for my entire running and coaching career. Don’t try to go further or faster than the day before, your goal should just be to get out and do it again the next day or a day later. You can slowly increase to running as weeks and months pass. Remember, if you decide to do this, your goal should be to run for the rest of your life, so it really doesn’t matter if it takes you a year to work up to running 3 miles. As you continue to progress from walking, to run/walking, to running the benefits you’ll realize are overwhelming. Weight loss and body tone will occur almost immediately depending on your starting point. You’ll have more energy and feel generally less lethargic after the first couple of weeks. You may have a bit of muscle soreness, but it should go away quickly as long as you’re progressing slowly and at a rate that makes sense for you. Healthy food choices will be more important to you and you’ll find yourself gravitating toward eating a better diet, not by necessity, but by choice. Oh, you’ll still want ice cream, but the guilt associated with eating it will be much less. Other aspects of your life will change as well…your spouse will like you more (really), some of you may even get a spouse. You’ll have more energy to play with your kids, or grandkids. And your doctor may even take you off some medication that you’ve been on for years. The habit of regular running is not easy, but it’s very simple and the benefits are truly overwhelming and whole life changing. Get started right away. Consult a physician, who is in good physical health, if you have concerns about yourself. And finally, seek professional guidance in developing your program and in your equipment choices. Hope to see you on the road soon! Written by Paul Epstein, Parks and Rec Board Member, Owner, Running Wild
