MESSAGE FROM PARKS AND RECREATION DIRECTOR A few months ago the Neighborhood Services Department underwent a name change and has returned to the name Parks and Recreation Department. It is my sincere hope that this change makes the department and staff easier to find, gives the community a better understanding of what we do and the services we provide, as well as invites more people to enjoy all of the recreational opportunities we have to offer in the City of Pensacola. The department recently launched a new monthly e-newsletter called PlayUp to help us better engage with the community on a regular basis and our PlayPensacola.com website is evolving to bring you more upto-date information about the programs, events, and services we offer. Additionally, we have expanded outreach to citizens by encouraging feedback through social media, surveys and more face to face interaction. Whether you visit parks and recreation facilities daily, or if it’s been a while since you visited, we invite you to take advantage of these wonderful resources in the community and get to know your Parks and Recreation Department all over again. You’ll find many opportunities to do just that in this Activity Guide but we also invite you to visit our website at PlayPensacola.com, follow us on Facebook, join our PlayUp e-newsletter mailing list, or give us a call at (850) 436-5670. We hope to see you out there playing soon!

GET TO KNOW PARKS & RECREATION AGAIN Recently the Neighborhood Services Department reclaimed the title of Parks and Recreation Department. Parks and Recreation is recognized as a national brand and parks departments are often one of the first places a new resident or visitor will reach out to when they move to or visit a new city. So naturally, we want to be an easily accessible department and our name should reflect the services that people are expecting to find in a community the size of Pensacola. Parks and Recreation Departments deliver health, economic and social benefits that are subtle, yet powerful. These benefits help make a community a more desirable place to live, work and play. One of the most noticeable benefits is that parks and recreation facilities help strengthen community ties and bring diverse populations together. Pensacola has a wide-range of special events, athletic and recreation programs to offer. Many are hosted in our beautiful parks and recreation facilities throughout the year, which endears many of these spaces to people’s hearts. Its little surprise then that parks like Bayview Park, Alabama Square, Community Maritime Park, Seville Square, Veteran’s Memorial Park, and Roger Scott Park were voted Best of the Coast winners and runners up for 2014! Parks help increase property values. Homes located near parks are more attractive to buyers, especially parks with playgrounds and walking/jogging paths. Did you know the City of Pensacola has 93 parks and 61 playground structures and that 97% of homes in the city are located within ½ mile of a public park? Parks and recreation departments boost the economy by providing jobs both year-round and seasonally. Did you know that parks and recreation departments tend to be one of the major employers of part-time and seasonal workers, providing not just jobs but valuable training for many teens and young adults as well as retirees? Additionally, communities with a wide variety of recreation resources are more attractive to businesses looking to relocate and expand. Parks help protect the environment by protecting open space, keeping our air and water clean, connecting children to nature and engaging the community in conservation practices. The City of Pensacola Parks

ACTIVITY GUIDE | WINTER ISSUE 2015

and Recreation Department has an Adopt-A-Park program and organizes dozens of volunteer clean-up projects in the community to help keep Pensacola beautiful and protect our natural environment. Access to parks and recreation facilities and programs aid communities in the control of obesity by encouraging physical activity and supporting healthy eating habits. Through after-school and summer programs, parks and recreation agencies are the second largest provider of healthy meals and snacks to youth outside of schools. The City of Pensacola offers afterschool, spring break and summer camp programs led by trained and caring staff in most of our Resource Centers with a focus on physical activity, building social and cognitive skills, as well as living a healthy lifestyle. After-school and summer programming helps keeps kids safe, inspires learning and physical activity, and also helps working families meet childcare needs. Fricker Resource Center will utilize sports and media as a theme in their spring break and summer camp programs this year to incorporate physical activity and learning. Participants will be able to develop not just their athletic prowess but build self-esteem and boost their academic success by learning to develop media campaigns through video, audio, art, music and writing. Last but not least, regular physical activity helps boost the immune system, diminishes the risk of disease and chronic illness, as well as provides a mental boost for all ages. This is especially beneficial to our senior population who may find themselves having difficulty adjusting to health or physical changes, death of a spouse, or living on a reduced income after retirement. Bayview Senior Center as well as our other resource centers provide year-round programming to meet the needs of mature adults over the age of 50 and help address the emerging physical, social and financial issues faced by this growing population. All of these benefits work together to help the City of Pensacola be one of the best places to live, work and play. Tonya Vaden Marketing Coordinator
