It’s finally starting to feel like fall, and many of us are ready to embrace the spooky time of year more than ever. October has always been one of my favorite times of the year— and not just because it’s my birthday month—because Halloween is my absolute favorite holiday. While many of last year’s Halloween events were cancelled or limited due to COVID-19, there’s no shortage of festive happenings in Pensacola this year. Whether you’re in the mood for some good old-fashion trick-ortreating or something a little more frightful, we’ve got you covered! In this issue, we’ve brought you a handy list of local Halloween festivities and trick-or-treat extravaganzas to help you bring in the spooky season. In addition to a jam-packed lineup of Halloween happenings, the much-anticipated return of the Punk Rock Flea Market is scheduled for October 24. Whether you’re looking to mingle with fellow punk rockers or just want to shop, this event is truly unique and

offers up a little something for everyone. For this issue, we had a chance to catch up with the Pensacola Ice Flyers to learn more about their upcoming season, which kicks off October 16 at the Pensacola Bay Center. Fans have quite the treat in store for them this season as the team returns to the ice after winning their fourth President’s Cup win. We’ve also brought you the latest on a New Orleansbased burrito joint, called Juan’s Flying Burrito, that is scheduled to open two new locations in Pensacola this coming November. Just to be clear, this isn’t your average burrito joint. Juan’s serves up authentic (and gigantic) Creole-inspired burritos, and they mix up some of the best margarita’s I’ve ever had. You don’t have to take my word for it—go give it a try for yourself! As always, we hope you enjoy this issue and until next time, cheers.

Whether he’s tagging and painting over pieces at Graffiti Bridge or designing massive, commissioned murals, Patrick (Patty) Quintanilla, 29, can usually be spotted around Pensacola with a can of spray paint in his hand. As a selftaught graffiti artist and muralist, he started out tagging trains and abandoned warehouses in his teens. Once Quintanilla moved to Pensacola four years ago, he started using the Graffiti Bridge as his personal sketch pad, began working as a professional mural artist and joined DVK, a worldwide graffiti group, which encouraged him to improve his craft. His designs combine illustrative realism and abstract contemporary art, often featuring detailed animals and sea creatures. You can check out his work on Instagram @pattysauces or Facebook @pattysart. Graffiti art has a temporary quality to it as its always being covered up and tagged over. Do you find that temporary canvas inspiring, and if so, what draws you back to painting graffiti pieces? It depends. If you mention graffiti around here, 98 percent of people think of Graffiti Bridge. And stuff there gets tagged over and covered over, sometimes within hours. But there’s a certain etiquette in the culture of graffiti. There’s an unspoken rule that you don’t go over a piece unless you’re going to do an equally good piece. But legal spots have always been kind of an abnormality to that aspect of graffiti. I feel like whatever you call it—public art, street art, graffiti, mural— it’s one of the most influential forms of art because of its accessibility to individuals who normally wouldn’t be interested in going to galleries or art museums. It’s the community aspect that keeps me coming back.

happenings in Pensacola are more plentiful— with some safe social distancing measures in place, of course. From haunted houses and spectacular supernatural events to pumpkin patches and family-friendly festivals, we've compiled a handy list of creepy—and not so creepy— Halloween happenings around town to help you welcome back the spooky season. Creepy Hollow Woods

The unknown awaits around every corner at Creepy Hollow Woods, one of Northwest Florida's favorite haunted trails located in Jay. Founded in 2011 by Shane Haynes, the Creepy Hollow Woods has grown to become one of the top-rated haunted attractions not only in Florida, but in the nation. For this frightful festivity, guests will have their choice of two different experiences, Normal or Night of Insanity, where they’ll navigate their way through “the haunt,” exploring the rooms and creatures that await you inside. For the Normal tour, guests will not be touched by the actors and tour group sizes will be limited. The Insanity tour includes a full-blown hands-on experience and is not for the faint of heart. Two Insanity Victims will enter the haunt at a time after being given a hospital gown to mark guests for the experience for the actors. There is only one hope for you to escape the madness. You will be given a safe word before entering the haunted attraction. This experience only had a fifty percent completion rate last season. Just a heads up, don’t wear anything that you’re particularly attached to as people tend to come out of the haunt looking much different than they did before they entered. You’ve been warned! Creepy Hollow Woods will also provide live music and axe throwing (you’ll get to throw three axes for $5) while guests wait for their turn to enter the haunt. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased online at hauntpay.com or in-person at the event. The Night of Insanity tour is for adults, ages 18 and up and valid ID is required. Creepy Hollow is located at 2251 Wade Road in Jay, FL. For more information, be sure to follow Creepy Hollow Woods on Facebook at @CreepyHollowWoodsFL.

Pensacola Ice Flyers

“We will have a target on us, so we must be ready to play every night.”

Return to the Hangar

by Darien Hardy

T

he Pensacola Ice Flyers will once again return to the ice to defend their President’s Cup crown at the first home game of the 2021–2022 season on Saturday, October 16. This marks the fourth championship win for the Ice Flyers, which has been especially rewarding as the team was able to power through and play, even with new COVID-19 protocols in place.

14 | DOWNTOWNCROWD.COM

The Ice Flyers will debut their newlydesigned championship logo and uniforms on game night, which reflect their most recent President’s Cup championship win. New merchandise and Ice Flyers swag featuring the new logo, will be available for purchase at the game. The kick-off game is set for October 16 at 7:05 pm against the Birmingham Bulls at the Pensacola Bay Center. This season’s schedule includes 56 games and will conclude with an away game on April 9 against Georgia’s Macon Mayhem.

Fans can purchase tickets to single games online at ticketmaster.com or at the Pensacola Bay Center Box Office to avoid paying Ticketmaster fees. Season and group tickets (for parties of 10 or more) can be purchased or requested through the Ice Flyers’ online box office at pensacolaiceflyers. com. Season ticket holders earn exclusive benefits such as 10 percent off merchandise, discounts on additional tickets to single games, live streaming capabilities, special shout-outs and exclusive Ice Flyers swag.

The Pensacola Ice Flyers team posing with their fourth President’s Cup championship trophy. 

Pensacola Ice Flyers owner, Greg Harris explained that this season is going to be interesting because a lot of players on many teams have signed professional contracts and are moving up to new leagues. “Coach Rod has been working to bring in some really good talent, people and players to wear the Ice Flyers jersey and to, really, truly compete at the highest level on their way to another championship,” Harris said. The Ice Flyers have announced the signing of five new players for this season’s team roster. Fan favorites, forward Brennan Blaszczak and defensemen Duggie Lagrone and Cam Bakker will return for a new season. Additionally, rookie forwards Bobby Hampton and Marcus Russell signed to join the ranks. The Ice Flyers have also signed Queen’s University forward Jared Bethune to this season’s roster. “Defending our title will be a fun challenge. We will have a target on us, so we must be ready to play every night, which is a good thing. It builds consistency and consistency is what wins in the playoffs,” Pensacola Ice Flyers Head Coach, Rod Aldoff said. “It’s exciting, I’m looking forward to the challenges as a coach, and the players are looking forward to the challenges as well— becoming a team and family and representing the city of Pensacola the best way possible.”

In the past, the Ice Flyers provided fans with several fun ways to interact with the players beyond typical games. This season, the team has plans to host more theme nights and events to benefit local charities. For the past two years, the team has dedicated game nights to Autism Pensacola, and in the upcoming season, they plan to dedicate a night to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwest Florida. Pensacola Ice Flyers Marketing Director, Brenden Arnrey said that the February 22 home game theme night would include the return of the beloved Wiener Dog Races, which has been a local favorite for many years and benefits the Pensacola Humane Society. This year also marks the 25th anniversary of the history of ice hockey in Pensacola. The Ice Flyers plan to celebrate the momentous occasion with a special home game for its fans. The Bay Center’s video board will feature shoutouts to visiting alumni, and the Ice Flyers will sport a speciallydesigned jersey featuring a 25th anniversary logo just for the occasion. “I just want to thank the community for their support and their loyalty

and their commitment to the Ice Flyers throughout all the difficult times we’ve all experienced in the last year and a half. It’s greatly appreciated and we’re all looking forward to seeing everyone at the hangar on October 16,” Harris said.

To check out the full game schedule and for more information on this season’s roster, visit their website at pensacolaiceflyers.com or follow them on Facebook and Twitter @PcolaIceFlyers. 

FLYING BURRITOS COMING IN HOT JUAN’S FLYING BURRITO IS LANDING IN PENSACOLA by Morgan Cole

So, he set out to create something different from the “scoop-and-eat” food carts that many of the musicians and artists had become accustomed to. Of course, its distinct punk rock vibe and rock and roll aesthetic made it more popular.

According to Fisher, the expansion to Pensacola was viewed as a natural next step by restaurant owner Warren Chapoton, who was inspired by the vast similarities of Pensacola to New Orleans, where the business was first launched and quickly flourished — giving rise to its four locations.

Compared to other big burrito franchises like Moe’s or Chipotle, Fisher said Juan’s blends the unique culture of New Orleans with a burrito joint to create the world’s first Creole Taqueria (or Creole Mexican restaurant), making it distinct in their offerings.

“It’s a delicious neighborhood restaurant that is integrated into the community with a fun and comfortable vibe,” Fisher said. For more than two decades, Juan’s Flying Burritos has remained true to quality. Everything is authentic and cooked to order using only the best fresh ingredients. “Juan’s has become a New Orleans institution,” Fisher said. “The food and margaritas are incredible.
