AS A CARD-CARRYING hipster of the most Pensacola variety, I love spring. Bike rides, picnics, sundresses, bike rides to parks where you have a picnic while wearing a sundress. It’s like the whole world has a Walden filter on it and I’m the United Colors of Benetton model at the center of this grainy yet colorful world. That’s ironic narcissism, obviously. But seriously, my hair color looks incredible in natural light, and there are literally hundreds of similarly amazing reasons to start spending the majority of your time outdoors and in Downtown Pensacola. First and foremost, April is the month that really

starts ushering in the festivals. On April 4 and 5 the University of West Florida welcomes the community to its campus for Festival on the Green, a varied exhibition of arts and crafts, music, campus life, children’s activities and my personal favorite, a canine exhibition where you can pet a ton of dogs. All this and much more will be on display throughout UWF. It’s the perfect opportunity to check in on my alma mater since so much has changed in the five-ish years since I graduated. The 31st annual Pensacola Jazz Fest will take over Seville Square on April 5 and 6, and once again April’s Gallery Night will fall on the first Friday of the month to coordinate with this growing festival. Look out for jazz ensembles on Friday night, then spend Saturday and Sunday camped in the Square for even more varieties of America’s unique music style. You can take breaks between sets to check out arts and crafts, food and kids’ activities. Also this month we’re touching base with the area’s outdoor markets. What kind of hipster would I be if I didn’t eat local kale from the farmers market at every meal? Not a very good one! The Palafox Market has been going strong and now others are popping up around Downtown. Whether it’s fresh groceries from regional farmers and artisans or something created by the personal touch of a Pensacola-based artist, local markets are the hot spot to pick up the goods. And with the spring weather beckoning, you won’t want to go back indoors to enjoy the spoils. That’s when you cobble together a kale sandwich and join me on this bike picnic.

BISHOPS COFFEE AND TEA BY JOSH NEWBY
·
6
April 2014 downtowncrowd.com
“IF WATER IS the source of life, then coffee is the source of my existence.” So reads the wall art that greets customers as they enter Bishop’s Coffee and Tea at 210 S. Alcaniz. This simple profundity guides owner Tionna Bishop throughout her many coffee- and tea-inspired ventures, an addiction she admits she encourages. “Coffee is literally my calling,” said Bishop. “I didn’t go to college for this, and have had only a handful of mentors in my life, but I know this is what I am supposed to do. You never see anyone upset or angry in a coffee shop. I love that, and this shop is a way to stay strong in my conviction.” Influenced by her father and grandfather’s love of coffee, Bishop said that her late teens really exposed her passion for local, diverse roasts. She met her first roaster in Berkley, Calif. and visited several different coffee houses in the bay area. These adventures encouraged her to pursue coffee as not just a career, but as a lifestyle. “It has become a part of who I am,” Bishop happily said. After starting her company in 2007, Bishop has added various locations, including Fairhope and Atlanta, distributes to places like Fresh Market, Greer’s and more via her online store, and is even releasing an app in a few weeks so that customers can select and pay for an order on their phone before picking it up in store. Bishop attributes this rapid success to several secret recipes, as well as a dedication to only the finest organic ingredients. “I roast my own coffee beans, and I’m one of the few in the south who uses an electric roaster, instead of propane,” said Bishop. “This is not only better for the environment, but it also produces a superior product. Propane roasters can leave a bitter taste. With electric, though, you are left wanting more of the clean, nuanced taste it provides.”
As the weather turns warmer in Florida, Bishop has adapted her menu to serve as the perfect antidote for the hot and humid spring and summer while providing an early morning or mid-afternoon energy boost. “We have iced coffees with coffee ice cubes, bubble tea, and we even use a martini shaker for a signature drink that I can’t reveal the ingredients for,” said Bishop. “We have everything from tea frappes to espresso frappes. I like to surprise everyone.”
“You never see anyone upset or angry in a coffee shop.” Bishop would love to see her brand continue on for a long time to come, and even have it be her legacy that future generations become a part of and enjoy. “A lot of people just want to be bought out and make a quick million,” said Bishop. “Not me. I want people to follow our brand and keep our integrity intact. We want each cup of coffee or tea to be a clear stamp of who we are and what we stand for. I never want to lose that.” Bishop’s Coffee and Tea is open 8 am to 8 pm, seven days a week.

JAZZ FEST ·
HELPING US WELCOME the warm weather with soulful tunes this spring is Pensacola’s 31st annual Jazz Festival. The long awaited, two-day event will be held April 5 and 6. Its usual array of performers and vendors will be present, along with a large estimated crowd of 7,000 people per day. This year’s festival is offering some different genres of jazz, rather than the traditional jazz we’ve heard in years past, thanks to the headliners’ wide range of styles. Crystal Joy, president of the Jazz Society of Pensacola, said they really wanted to expand and try to reach new audiences this year, and that effort is evident in their choices of headliners, beginning with Lao Tizer. Tizer, Joy said, is more smooth jazz, which is something the festival has never really put much focus on but is becoming more popular. The Jazz Society also decided to bring Terry “Doc” Handy and his group as a headliner after hearing them perform at a Jazz Gumbo last year. “They were so well received and so talented that we invited them to come back to Jazz Fest,” Joy said. “It’s a sextet, [and] they are all just fabulous musicians.” The third headliner is in a genre all its own. The 4th Ward Afro-Klezmer Orchestra
exemplifies eclectic jazz music. The nine-piece group incorporates klezmer – traditional eastern European Jewish music – funk, jazz and rock into their arrangements. “[Klezmer is] an old form of music that’s just as old as jazz is, maybe older,” Joy said. “But the idea to combine it with jazz is just brilliant, and I think that’s something that people will want to hear.” Along with the professional artists, school groups will be performing as well. The younger, yet just as enjoyable performers will range from middle school to college level. One dedicated college group is even making the trek from the Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College in Tifton, Ga. Kids are always welcome at Jazz Fest, but if they start to get restless and need some activities on these hopefully warm and sunny afternoons, they can always participate in the Kiddie Jam Session. For about an hour each day, kids can let loose and learn how to play harmonicas and kazoos near the playground area. If you decide to take a break from the smooth tunes of jazz and stretch your legs, you can either visit the expansive setup of arts and crafts vendors or make your way to some delicious foods and drinks. The options will range from autographed Jazz Fest posters by Sonya Griffin to the Sons of Italy, returning from last year and hopefully bringing their “great shrimp scampi,” Joy said. They are anticipating around 50 vendors this year, which is no surprise given the variety of talent Pensacola houses. “We have a nice variety of local art and jewelry makers and all kinds of local artisans – just a
big variety of exhibitors,” Joy said. “We’re not really limiting to just arts and crafts.” Thankfully, the Jazz Fest shows no signs of slowing down or taking a break. With the hundreds of applications they receive from performers every year, it’s safe to say we can look forward to those bluesy tunes for years to come.

THE NEWEST RETAIL store on Palafox houses collections of boutique apparel and locally made clothes and accessories—all for the younger set. Sparkle Children’s Boutique is filled with racks of tulle tutu skirts, walls of Technicolor ribbons and hair bows, and a bevy of other clothing items for children. Owner KC McCall was motivated to open this type of business by her own two young girls, the youngest of which was less than six months old when the first incarnation of the store was opened on Government Street. After moving the store, then called Ty & KC, from Government to a space on 9th Avenue, she’s now in the prime space at at 124 Palafox Place, beckoning shoppers with candy-colored window displays. After her grand opening at the February Gallery Night, McCall says the response at her new location has been wonderful. “It’s been really good. There’s lots of walk-in traffic,” she says. “I’m surprised at the number of tourists already that are coming and there are a lot of people just out enjoying the day that aren’t necessarily there to shop but they do shop, so it’s just a really fun environment.” 10

Sparkle carries boutique lines of clothes like dresses, tops, onesies and skirts, as well as headbands, hair bows and other accessories. Customers can even come into the shop and make something completely unique for their little one. Monogramming is available and there are also every color imaginable of fabric flowers and other items that can be attached to something else to create personalized pieces. “We offer customizable things, like people can pick their own flowers or rhinestones or little addons to items and we can put them on a headband, or we can add them to a shirt or we can make a little hair clip out of them.” Another activity Sparkle offers is a station where kids (or adults) can create their own special stuffed animal. Along with “skins” for teddy bears, there are unicorns, lambs, and a recent shipment of bunnies for Easter, that kids can have stuffed in the store by a stuffing machine. They can then pick out clothing and other items for their new stuffed toy.
Now that McCall has a baby boy on the way she’s testing the waters with lines of boys’ clothing with shirts and accessories like ties and bowties. She hopes to expand the boy offerings in the future, but for now, the store is mostly stocked with more girly apparel. Sparkle adds another choice in Downtown’s retail offerings, and for shoppers on Palafox the addition of a children’s store is a welcome one. “I love being able to create and put together outfits and to make people so happy,” McCall says. “It’s such a compliment when little girls come in and have to wear their outfit out of the store or put on their bows right away.”

Festival on the Green ·
by Emily Lullo
EVERY YEAR THE University of West Florida expands in its program offerings, activities, and in its reach to the city and greater southeast region. Each spring the university in turn shares its growth and success with the community in a celebration that stretches across the campus for the first weekend in April. Festival on the Green, taking place April 4 and 5, has come to be known as a perfect outdoor family activity to welcome the spring season as well as a great way for alums to keep up with the school. “We’re trying to get people to come in and take
two stages. The Mainstage on Friday and Saturday will host UWF music department groups and local artists ranging from country to blues and rock, while the Diversity Showcase Stage will host belly dancers, Argentine tango and the Belmont Youth Band, among others. The Windows Open Air Stage will feature various UWF groups such as cheerleaders and musical theatre groups as well as the McGuire’s Bagpipe Band. The festival also invites attendees to explore some of what students experience in daily life at UWF. A Campus Life Expo will showcase various
a look around the campus and see what it’s all about,” says festival director Jeffrey Comeau. “The campus has changed so much over the years, so it’s always a good opportunity for people to come out and see what’s new.” The central point of Festival on the Green surrounds the campus Commons, where entertainment stages, fine arts, crafts vendors and many other attractions will be set up for display. Entertainment for the weekend will take place on
student-run organizations and there will also be regular sporting events, a library book sale, and an Honors Convocation going on during the festival. The fest stretches into parking lots which will feature a motorcycle show and a display of vehicles from the Gulf Coast Model A Club. “Normally we have somewhere between 17 and 20 different venues. There’s different kinds of things,” Comeau says. “One of the venues we have is a canine arena where they do dog agility and flyball and then we have a children’s fair on Saturday.”

University of West Florida The fest also includes a Time Portal to the Past and a Time Portal to Your Future. New this year at the Time Portal to Your Future will be demonstrations hosted by the National Flight Academy. Sci-fi fans will delight in more whimsical futuristic entertainment from the USS Continuum, the local chapter of a Star Trek group, as well as the 501st Legion and Parjai Squad, featuring costumed characters from Star Wars. The public is invited to visit the university and discover these and many more activities that are
planned for the weekend. Comeau says the vast and varied slate of events will offer something for anyone in the community. “The Festival on the Green is kind of an umbrella of all kinds of events,” he says. “All these things are all pieces of activities that happen around the culture of the University of West Florida.” For full schedule of event and details visit uwf.edu/festival.

Outdoor Markets
·
SPRING IN PENSACOLA means spending as much time outdoors as possible before the sweltering summer rears its sweat-dappled head, and getting your shopping done while soaking in some vitamin D is the perfect way to multitask. Whether you’re shopping for fresh food to fill your pantry, a unique artistic gift for a friend, or even a vintage piece for your home, you can find what you need at a local outdoor market in the Downtown area. The upswing in this trend across the nation has proven that shoppers want it fresh and they want it local! Starting with the Palafox Market, try these weekly markets for your shopping needs.
Palafox Market Saturdays 8 am-2 pm MLK Plaza on North Palafox The flagship market of Downtown Pensacola is the hugely successful Palafox Farmers Market. With more than 100 vendors sprawling over all three medians of Martin Luther King, Jr. Plaza on north Palafox between Wright and Garden streets, this market has grown massively since its inception in 2008 when just 12 vendors set up. It opens each Saturday morning from 8 am until 2 pm and is well known for its wide array of produce from local farmers, eggs and pasture raised meat, plants and artisan foods like local honey and freshly baked goods. The artist section is consistently full with everything from unique wind chimes and jewelry to ceramics and paintings. Almost an arts festival on its own, this section boasts a rotating slate of artists with a waiting list for future vendors. Organizer Teresa Duffey says the market will soon be ripe with spring produce like potatoes, watermelon, tomatoes and cantaloupe, but the end of the winter harvest is still bringing plenty of greens, cabbage and root veggies like carrots, turnips and rutabaga.
12th Avenue Patio Sale Saturdays 8 am-1 pm, through May 1010 N. 12th Ave. The 12th Avenue Patio Sale takes place on Saturday mornings from 8 am until 1 pm, and is located on the lawn of the former Sacred Heart building at 12th Avenue and DeSoto Street in historic East Hill. Kristen Saxon, owner of Stay the Clinical Spa, started the market in October 2013 to host the many vendors who wanted to sell at Palafox Market but weren’t able to because its vendor space fills up so quickly. “Twelfth Avenue Sale was created to help sellers just getting started by utilizing the large landscape and high traffic area of the Historic Sacred Heart Building,” Saxon says. “Several vendors from last fall’s sale have grown into successful businesses.” Featuring a growing number of vendors with everything from resale, vintage and upcycled items to artisan breads or bath products and local artists’ creations, the sale is often a treasure-filled stop for the many East Hill yard salers. “Some weeks it is a crafter’s paradise, some weeks it is a ‘fancy flea market’ but mostly it is a fun mix and you never know what you will find,” she says.

The Market at Al Fresco Wednesdays 3 pm-7 pm, through October Al Fresco - 501 S. Palafox For those who need a midweek fresh fix, there’s The Market at Al Fresco—the perfect stop for a Wednesday date, or to pick up some extra local groceries. Spearheaded by Al Fresco owner Michael Carro and East Hill Honey owner (and Palafox Market vendor) Tommy Van Horn, this market made its debut March 12 and it will continue on Wednesday evenings from 3 until 7 pm in the Al Fresco dining plaza. Shoppers can pick up fresh produce, free range meat and eggs, honey, and artisan food items like pickled veggies and freshly baked breads. During the market, live music permeates the Al Fresco plaza nestled next to the food trucks, and in its current space it allows for around 12 handpicked vendors, but there is room for growth along the surrounding area, which Van Horn says is currently being worked out with city permitting officials. “We have more people interested than we currently have space,” he says. “I see it maxing out at 25-30 vendors just to keep it within the space and to keep a smaller feel to it.”

Captain America: The Winter Soldier
What I’ll be spending my $8 on: Under the Skin In theaters: April 4 Starring: Scarlett Johannson, Paul Brannigan, Jessica Mance What I got from the preview: Abstract, nearly colorless moments from the movie play out in hypnotizing fashion, teasing us with the plot: an otherworldly seductress preys on lonely men in Scotland. I was never sure of exactly what I was seeing, but I was definitely seeing something intoxicating, strange and sublime. Most notable for: Jonathan Glazer (Birth, Sexy Beast) has made a semisuccessful career of directing movies containing such silly plots they would be considered campy exploitation were it not for the humanity he gives his characters and the realism he gives their actions. This is supposedly his best work to date. And Scarlett Johannson. Unqualified critical observation: I am positively giddy about this parable of love and loneliness, seduction and mystery. Make no mistake, this movie will not be the camp-fest you expect from the synopsis. Expect a gradual, occasionally slow build, a range of emotions lurking under the skin and a daring avant-garde interpretation of ageold struggles. And Scarlett Johannson. 22
April 2014 downtowncrowd.com
In theaters: April 4 Starring: Chris Evans, Robert Redford, Scarlett Johannson What I got from the preview: Classic American hero Steve Rogers struggles to feel at home in a modern world that doesn’t favor his traditional 1940s handsomeness. Soon however, he finds his place surrounded by other impossibly attractive leading characters. It’s not all champagne parties and tight leather, though, for soon the Winter Soldier, an amalgamation of Fox News-viewers’ worst fears, comes to bring Communist terror to the good ole’ US of A. Most notable for: This second Captain America and seventh Avenger-themed movie changes the stereotypical Marvel formula a bit by being both a political thriller and a multi-billion dollar grossing movie. Unqualified critical observation: I suspended my recent hatred of all things Marvel almost long enough to make this my pick of the month. There are some very cool things happening in the preview, and I will definitely be seeing this in theater. Love ‘em or hate ‘em, these movies deliver what they promise: impressive action set pieces, witty dialogue, award-winning special effects, adequate acting, and Scarlett Johannson playing a literal black widow twice in the same month.

In theaters: April 11 Starring: Karen Gillan, Katee Sackhoff, Brenton Thwaites What I got from the preview: Two young adult siblings recall the events that led to their mother’s murder. That’s some dark game night conversation. The sister blames a mirror, which she believes 1) houses demonic powers that ultimately caused the father to commit the crime and 2) offers simply too many crafting possibilities to just, ya know, throw away. The brother believes that the father just went insane and there are no supernatural powers at work. Most notable for: The same team of horror artisans have churned out the best scary movies in recent memory, such as the first Paranormal Activity, Sinister, Insidious and The Conjuring, and return with this entry in their anthology. And this movie was apparently distributed by the WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment)? Unqualified critical observation: This movie flips the horror movie premise on its head, questioning if supernatural occurrences are in fact not real, and just a creation of the mind struggling to find answers to unspeakable acts. Whether this story results in a true arbiter of evil, a family’s descent into insanity, or The Rock remains to be seen, but I’ll happily be along for the ride.
Transcendence
In theaters: April 17 Starring: Johnny Depp, Rebecca Hall, Morgan Freeman What I got from the preview: This preview was the wrong kind of vague, but apparently a sickly scientist transfers the contents of his mind to a computer, and this somehow makes him into an unstoppable force of evil. Because science. Most notable for: Giving a guy named Wally Pfister a directing gig. He no doubt thinks he’s the next Christopher Nolan (Inception, The Dark Knight series, Memento) or David Fincher (The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, The Social Network, Fight Club), but his parents just keep gently reminding him that his fate lies in the family business, Pfister Faucets. Unqualified critical observation: With a cast this good (it also features Kate Mara, Paul Bettany and Cillian Murphy), you would think the movie would follow suit. It seems, however, like an empty exercise in sci-fi for sci-fi’s sake. Here’s hoping I’m wrong, though, because I’d really like to see Johnny Depp good in something for once in the last decade.
The Other Woman
In theaters: April 25 Starring: Cameron Diaz, Leslie Mann, Kate Upton What I got from the preview: A stereotypical movie jerk cheats on one stunning woman with another, and the two ladies team up to exact revenge, because that’s what Hollywood considers a bankable story. Most notable for: This chick flick might be the first in recent history that tries to appeal to both men and women but fails miserably at both. Unqualified critical observation: Why was this movie made? Was it to give Kate Upton a film career? If so, why transpose the model to celluloid where she plays…a model? Was it to offer a funny, female-based revenge flick? Didn’t First Wives Club do that first and better? So many questions I’ll never know the answer to. On second thought, this might be a perfect first date movie. If your date enjoys it, don’t go out with that person again. If you like it, there may not be another.
