FOR MANY, FEBRUARY is most notable for being the month of love, or the month of the lamest, most contrived “holiday” of the year, depending on whom you ask. For our office, this month is all about love. I’m talking about the love of all things nerdy. That’s right—we’re hoisting our geek flags and perfecting our cosplay for one of the most exciting singular events to be birthed into Downtown Pensacola: Pensacon. Not only is this highly anticipated convention bringing tons of celebrities, activities and general fun to our city and especially to Downtown, but the folks

behind the event have been great stewards of the event itself as well of the Greater Pensacola area in general. They’ve been promoting Pensacon at other cons throughout the country and have dived headfirst into collaborations with area businesses who have jumped onboard to make all convention attendees feel welcomed into our community. It’s these kinds of creative partnerships and coordination that will make this convention a premier event for locals and convention enthusiasts around the country for years to come. Check out page 10 for a look into some of what Pensacon has to offer—we don’t have nearly enough room to cover it all on these pages! Pensacon’s organizers have also partnered with the Downtown Improvement Board to co-sponsor Downtown’s premier event, Gallery Night, on Feb. 21. That Gallery Night will coincide with the first night of the convention, as well as several coordinating parties and events throughout Downtown, adding a unique flavor to the regular night of art and music. Look out for costumes and themed parties, and likely the best people watching of the year, and don’t forget to bring along our Official Gallery Night Guide. As the month comes to a close, the Mardi Gras season will be revving up. Balls and parties will dot the month and the big parades will kick off on Feb. 28. In this issue, we’ve featured Pensacola Parade People, a warehouse of Mardi Gras supplies that rivals well-known New Orleans stores. Get all the typical Mardi Gras party necessities, as well as some stuff you didn’t know you needed. Turn to page 6 for an inside peek at this partier’s paradise.

V-Day Pensacola 2014 Emily Lullo discusses the V-Day Pensacola events, in support of FavorHouse.

·

IF THE TYPICAL Valentine’s Day fare of boxed chocolates and crowded restaurants isn’t your thing, perhaps you’d be more interested in celebrating something else entirely, like V-Day. V-Day

is a global activist movement created to end violence against women and girls. V-Day promotes creative events that increase awareness, raise money, and revitalize the spirit of existing antiviolence organizations, and this year, Pensacola is jumping on board with its own V-Day event benefiting Favor House of Northwest Florida, our local domestic violence center. V-Day will be held at Artel Gallery on Friday, Feb. 14, and the centerpiece to the event will be a performance by local women of Eve Ensler’s Vagina Monologues. There will also be a silent art auction, raffle prizes and refreshments, with all proceeds going to Favor House. Organizers Rachel Moore and Jennifer Shellman have spearheaded a similar production in Pensacola in 2009, and they decided to bring it back for the 20th anniversary of the first V-Day event. “Something that Pensacola I think is lacking is women oriented community events, so I thought it would be really empowering event for women to do together and for their friends and family to see,” Shellman says. The play itself is based on interviews with women around the world about their

experiences as women and often with relation to their bodies. “The best part about the play is that even though it’s female-oriented, all women and men can really enjoy and relate to it because it’s really funny and sad and everyone watching it will hear something that resonates with their own personal experience,” Shellman says. The first production was held at Sluggo’s in Brownsville and was smaller in scale than this year’s event, which will benefit from the expansive and unique space at Artel Gallery. Despite its small space, the first event netted about $900 for Favor House. Moore says this year the group of women behind it is thinking much bigger, and says the event offers the community something unique compared to usual Valentine’s plans. “It’s giving a little bit of deeper meaning to Feb. 14 rather than just buying your girlfriend flowers and taking her out to dinner,” she says. Tickets are $5 and doors open at 6 pm with the show starting at 8 pm. Come early to bid on local art, purchase raffle tickets to win prizes from local businesses, grab a glass of wine and meet the cast. For more information on the global movement visit vday.org.

>PensacolaParadePeople Emily Lullo discovers a treasure trove of New Orleans-style Mardi Gras supplies in Pensacola Pensacola’s Mardi Gras celebration has always been a local source of pride and entertainment, but in the last few years it has been on the rise with more events, more krewes, and more fun for everyone who partakes. With this growth comes a greater need for all things Mardi Gras. For many years, krewes and party hosts in need of beads, trinkets, party supplies and boas were forced to make the trek to places like New Orleans or Mobile to get these necessities. That is until November of 2013 when the Pensacola Parade People opened the doors to their new business and filled the gaping hole in our local Mardi Gras supply needs. The store is owned by mother and daughter team, Terry and Audrey Preston. The pair were already Mardi Gras enthusiasts and they felt Pensacola was ready to have its own superstore for all the essential Mardi Gras items and experience. “People come in and they’re really excited to see we have New Orleans prices and selection

>

right here in Pensacola,” Audrey says. “They don’t have to drive out of town and they can support a local small business.” Modeled after the superstores in these cities, the Prestons offer the same shopping experience on a Pensacola scale. With a 1,700 square foot warehouse and showroom in Ellyson Industrial Park, they’ve got everything you could possibly need, whether it’s a krewe needing beads and other throws, or someone looking for purple, green and gold lights or tablecloths for a party. Audrey says the response from the community has been great and this year they’ve quadrupled their stock, mostly with items requested by customers. Beads are clearly the biggest sellers to krewes who can buy them by the case, along with marshmallow treats and other throw items. Some of the other items they carry are a variety of plush toys, fabric roses for parade walkers to hand out, and costume accessories like tutus.

10 am – 5:30 pm Tuesday – Saturday 9100A Hamman Ave.

”Some of the specialty items that we carry that you’re not going to find anywhere else outside New Orleans would be the Mardi Gras panties, garters, and bras,” she says. “We have the big beads and we have light-up LED boas and hats.” Besides the colorful shopping experience offered by Pensacola Parade People, the business also has meeting space that krewes and other organizations that are participating in a parade are welcome to book for meetings or other events. Krewes that are ready to purchase their Mardi Gras throws can also turn the shopping into a social by booking a throw party, where members can come to buy their items

while enjoying food, drinks and discounts. The seasonal store is open September until June, stocking items not only for Mardi Gras, but also the Christmas and Fiesta parades. While Pensacola may not be as large as some of the other Mardi Gras cities in the region, Audrey says the area has embraced the store and the experience they offer. “It has been wonderful,” she says. “I think that people are really ready for us to have our own Mardi Gras superstore here in town.”

The Global Grill ·

Business Profile

by Jeanessa Gantt

“WHEN WE FIRST opened, we kind of felt like we were on the cusp of something good,” said Jane Taylor, owner of the Downtown hotspot Global Grill. When she and her husband, award-winning Chef Frank Taylor, opened the upscale tapas bar 10 years ago, Global Grill and New York Nick’s were the only two eating establishments on Palafox Street. Now as Global Grill celebrates its 10-year anniversary, it continues to be a cornerstone of the more thriving Downtown restaurant scene. Although the restaurant is known for its signature tapas, Global Grill also serves salads, main entrées and desserts, all of which are handmade on site. And whether patrons are newcomers or have frequented the restaurant since it opened its doors, they’re sure to have a unique experience every time they visit. “Even if you come in quite a bit, there’s always something new on the menu to try” said Taylor. Chef Taylor and his crew are dedicated to offering innovative and exciting menu options using the freshest local, seasonal foods. They offer weekly and sometimes even nightly specials that feature fresh produce from Coldwater Gardens in Milton and fish caught right in the Gulf of Mexico. Jane Taylor says a lot of what they serve just depends on what is currently in abundance. In fact some seafood items, like cobia, are only available for six weeks out of the year. Their current winter menu features an artisanal mushroom salad made from Coldwater Gardens’ shitake and wild mushrooms, arugula, local pecans, goat cheese and white truffle oil vinaigrette. During the summer, tomatoes are in season and Coldwater Gardens supplies the restaurant heirloom tomatoes that are served as a salad in a mason jar. Not only will Global Grill customers find local products on their plates, but they’ll also

find it on the walls. With the exception of a few pieces that are from Taylor’s personal collection, all the artwork in the restaurant comes from local artists. The pieces range in styles from acrylics and oils to photography, and are all available for purchase off the wall by cash or check. With exceptional food and an artistic atmosphere, Global Grill is the perfect spot for a romantic Valentine’s Day dinner. You’ll have to book soon if you want a table, though. Taylor says reservations are filling up quickly, and even suggests that couples aim for other days during the week if they’re looking for a table around prime dinner time.

Pensacon: The Beginning · By Emily Lullo

UNLESS YOU’VE SPENT the last nine months hiding out in a secluded lair, you’ve likely already heard about Pensacola’s newest entertainment offering: Pensacon. The action-packed, weekend-long convention will finally come to the Pensacola Bay Center and Crowne Plaza Hotel on Feb. 21-23, bringing with it boatloads of celebrities, gaming tournaments, artists, panel discussions, costumes, and a huge array of events that span genres from sci-fi and comic books to fantasy and anime, and entirely too much more to list here. Pensacon’s founder and chairman Mike Ensley says he’s always been a bit of a nerd, starting way back before a nerdy interest could unite you with legions of likeminded individuals over the internet, at conventions, or locally. “When I started going to Dragon Con in Atlanta, I think there were probably 7,000 or 8,000 people attending in the early 90s, and then we went this past year and there were about 60,000 people at Dragon Con, so it has grown.” While Dragon Con has been an established big-city convention since 1987, Pensacon is an underdog by comparison—not that there’s any competition among the cons. Pensacon representatives have spent the last year traveling to Dragon Con and others to promote the event to fans everywhere. Still, our small-but-growing seaside metropolis might not exactly seem like a nerd party Mecca. “When I came up with this idea I was just thinking of doing a one day event; maybe finding a venue and getting some artists I knew,” Ensley says. Lucky for us, that plan failed when Ensley started collaborating on the project with Kinematic Entertainment, and he’s since assembled a team whose combined powers will bring this powerhouse to Downtown Pensacola, along with between 5,000 and 10,000 fans. Pensacon’s impact will span well beyond the official venues, with events and themed parties spreading to bars, restaurants, galleries and more throughout the weekend and preceding week. With Pensacon sponsoring the Feb. 21 Gallery Night, expect to see costumed attendees and discounts for Pensacon badge holders. Event coordinator Courtney Hagans says the community has been supportive and many have jumped on board to collaborate with Pensacon, which will enhance the event itself while enticing and welcoming out-of-town visitors. “It’s something very new that I don’t think Pensacola is ready for. I don’t even know if we’re ready for it,” she says. “We’re ambitious and we love Pensacola and Downtown. We want to make this something that people love.” Feb 2014 downtowncrowd.com 10Feb 2014 downtowncrowd.com 10

end of the line

WITH ITS CEILING adorned with artistic lighting fixtures and walls covered in works of local art, it’s easy to spot why End of the Line Cafe is not your average eatery. “It’s very unique,” Olivia Searcy, an EOTL employee, said. “It’s been here for so long. You meet all kinds of people who come here, and it’s just a big family place.” The vegan cafe has sat in its original home on East Wright Street for nearly 12 years. Owner Jen Knight-Shoemaker said she originally began the cafe as a coffee house but eventually expanded to serving food, wine and beer, making it a full

restaurant. She said she decided to open a full vegan restaurant when she noticed there weren’t many options for that particular niche 11 years ago. Since its inception, EOTL has expanded to reach an even wider customer base. “People think you have to be solely vegan or vegetarian just to eat here, but more than half of our customers aren’t,” Knight-Shoemaker said. “So that’s the cool thing; people’s minds are opening a little bit.” To reach out to even more patrons and incorporate community involvement, EOTL hosts weekly events, such as its Sunday brunches, Thursday dinners and Bluegrass Nights. “Every single Wednesday, around 6:30 or 7, we have a group of older gentlemen who come in— they actually started it here—and they have their own little circle set up [at the front],” Searcy said. “They’ll bring their banjos, guitars and violins, and anyone’s welcome to join in. I don’t even work that night, but I come up just to watch it.” Knight-Shoemaker even hosts a cooking class once a month on a Monday. She usually teaches participants how to cook a three-course meal. The lessons are typically themed, and this month’s is Valentine’s Day. Knight-Shoemaker is considering teaching her attendees how to make a handful of tasty desserts, rather than the usual dinner recipes. “Normally it would be a meal that I would prepare with several courses, and then everybody would learn those,” she said. “But for a desserts

class, I would like to pair coffees and wines and we could probably do about [three] desserts, like a candy, a cake and a pie.” The cafe has also recently undergone renovations to expand its kitchen. “It’s going a lot faster than I thought,” she said. “I expanded the kitchen. We kind of had some wasted space. It was storage, so we closed it off and now we’ve expanded our prep space and our work space in the back. So we’re expanding, and we need the room as we get busier.” Along with adding space, though, EOTL welcomes some exciting new aesthetic features. “We’re gussying the place up,” KnightShoemaker said. “We’re going to do the floors and maybe stain the ceilings, and we added woodwork. We’re going to fix up the courtyard; we’ve got a lot of plans for [it]. We’ve got lights we’re going to string and some more tables. It’ll be pretty back there.” One area that doesn’t need to be revamped is the local artwork lining the walls. Knight-Shoemaker said they usually have a local artist’s work displayed and are always welcoming newcomers As people bustle in and out, picking up their coffees or sitting down for lunch, EOTL doesn’t show any signs of slowing down. “It’s like a gem in Pensacola,” Searcy said. “There’s no place like this here. There’s just something sentimental about it.”

ICE FLYERS

Q+A

Steve Bergin

·

by Josh Newby

A TOP SCORER and assistant captain for the Ice Flyers, Steve Bergin helped bring his team to tournament victory during the 2012-2013 season last year. As the California native continues to excel on the ice, Bergin discussed with DTC his affinity for hockey, his favorite things to do in Pensacola, and playfully dodged questions concerning a recent revelation that he has a penchant for a certain female pop star.

You’ve been called a solid two-way DTC defenseman and a top scorer for the team. What is something fans may not know about you? I would say most fans don’t know that I’m SB originally from California and grew up playing with Ice Flyers Right Wing Justin Alonzo since we were about 10 years old. We lived in the same town when we were younger in California and now live in the same town in Massachusetts. I can’t get rid of the guy, he loves just following me around. Were you always interested in hockey, or did

DTC the cold northern winters force you into the

sport? I have been playing hockey for as long as SB I can remember. My dad was a hockey player so he had my older brother and I on skates as early as he could. What upcoming rival are you most

DTC anticipating?

I don’t usually look at the schedule too SB far in advance. I like to usually just take hockey one day at a time, but this year it has always been a battle when we play Louisiana, so I would have to go with them.

"”Would you rather?”

with steve bergin

Have a narrow win in overtime, or dominate the game from the beginning? Dominate from the beginning. Play against Wayne Gretzky or Mario Lemieux? Gretzky, not even a question. Have an endless drink tab at World of Beer, or an endless food tab at Jackson’s? I’ve never been to Jackson’s, but I’ve heard it was really good, so I would have to say Jackson’s.

DTC Do you have a post-game ritual?

No, I have a routine that I do leading up to SB the game and during the game, but once the game is over, I don’t really have any rituals or things that I have to do.

Describe your perfect night out and about in Pensacola. I would say the perfect night out on the SB town would be just having all the guys together at one of the bars Downtown after a big win on a Saturday night and not have anything on the schedule the next day.

DTC

Ryan Salvis has implicated you as a

DTC shameless fan of Miley Cyrus’ “Party in the SB

USA.” How do you respond? Who is Ryan Salvis?

Film

In which we unfairly judge upcoming attractions based solely on their trailers.

by Josh Newby

RoboCop

What I’ll be spending my $8 on:

The LEGO Movie

In theaters: February 7 Starring: Chris Pratt, Elizabeth Banks, Morgan Freeman, Liam Neeson What I got from the preview: An ordinary (LEGO) guy, happy in his colorful world, is called upon to protect his kind from an evil tyrant after he is mistaken as the prophesied MasterBuilder. Everything in this movie is built from computer animated LEGO blocks, and leveraging the company’s vast commercial partnerships, features such characters as Batman, Robin Hood, Jesus and more, all playfully parodied to wondrous effect. Most notable for: The childhood toy we all still love to enjoy and hate to step on is finally getting its own feature-length film. Unqualified critical observation: I am so excited to see this movie. The bright colors, the peppy music, the playful story, and the army of instantly recognizable voice talents and characters ensure this is one of the few movies that are truly for the young and young of heart. Sure, it wouldn’t be nearly as good without the LEGO gimmick, but I don’t care. You’ll find me camped out the evening of Feb. 6, eagerly awaiting its midnight release. I’ve already started on my minifigure costume.

Feb 2014 downtowncrowd.com

In theaters: February 12 Starring: Joel Kinnaman, Gary Oldman, Abbie Cornish, Samuel L. Jackson What I got from the preview: Samuel L. Jackson kicks off this trailer with a monologue about Detroit’s need for a new kind of cop—one that has a human’s judgment and acumen combined with a machine’s lack of need for a pension and insurance. When a police officer is critically injured in the line of duty, OmniCorp seizes the opportunity to use name recognition of an 80s movie to launch a new series. Most notable for: The original 1987 movie correctly predicted Detroit’s current dystopic and crime-ridden status, so naturally the producers of this remake felt it necessary to update the story with shiny special effects and more silliness. Unqualified critical observation: With largely CGdriven action sequences and a tired story, this film won’t offer audiences anything new. I’ve been hurt by high expectations of robotic futures before (I, Robot) and I refuse to open myself up to that kind of pain again.

Endless Love

In theaters: February 14 Starring: Gabriella Wilde, Alex Pettyfer What I got from the preview: Two young adults from vastly different economic backgrounds—one the product of the rich, snooty life, and the other the product of carefree charisma that only abject poverty can provide— meet each other and fall in love during the summer. Their parents naturally object, which can only end well. Most notable for: Surprisingly, this seems to be the lone Valentine’s offering from Hollywood this year. Unqualified critical observation: Why is it that whenever two really, really, ridiculously good-looking people fall in love, the parents always try to keep the two apart? They had to know their gorgeous kids would inevitably follow the age-old Romeo & Juliet trope. Well this Valentine’s Day, we all get to see what happens when two people from disparate backgrounds give up their futures and betray their upbringing for someone they just met. Much like the romance itself, it might be pretty to look at, but there likely won’t be much substance.

Vampire Academy

In theaters: February 14 Starring: Zoey Deutch, Lucy Fry, Sarah Hyland What I got from the preview: A group of students at a boarding school deal with the usual stressors, such as homework, dating, and diversifying their financial portfolio. They also happen to be vampires, which is interesting, because I’m looking forward to learning how Vampire Academy staff deal with the increased insurance and liability costs. Do they absorb the expense with their own salary or pass the cost onto students? Most notable for: This movie ranks with other recent hopeful franchise starters, such as The Mortal Instruments, The Host and Beautiful Creatures, that started out as books in the Young Adult section. Unqualified critical observation: I was ready to bash this movie and had already looked up creative synonyms for the words “terrible,” “derivative,” and “icky-looking,” but then I noticed that it was made by the director of Mean Girls. Hopefully, beyond the obvious vampire puns and needless pop culture references, this will actually be an enjoyable, quotable addition to the already exhausted vampire genre.

Pompeii

In theaters: February 21 Starring: Kit Harrington, Emily Browning What I got from the preview: An overbearing voice waxes on and on about the splendor and riches of Pompeii as we see Jon Snow battle people gladiator-style to compete for the affections of a princess. Mount Vesuvius has other plans, however, as it rains fire upon the ancient city with all the excitement of every other disaster movie juxtaposed with a love story. Most notable for: The guy who brought us such seminal classics as Resident Evil: Extinction and Death Race 2 is back to make us question our faith in moves. Unqualified critical observation: Volcanoes, the loss of human life, and the eternal struggle between man and nature are pretty boring topics, so Pompeii luckily injects muscley dudes and a love story to liven things up a bit. This movie honestly looked promising until the most recent trailer. The original teaser played like a historic epic on the scale of Titanic, but now it looks more like Pearl Harbor: a shameless attempt to capitalize on a historic tragedy that has recently reentered the spotlight by throwing together some big-name stars and some decent special effects.
