I know what you’re thinking. Something’s different, right? Yes, I changed my hair! Thank you for noticing! But if you’ll briefly turn your eyes away from my picture you may notice we have a bit of a new look happening here throughout the DTC. Big thanks to the weirdo in the next cubicle, Josh Newby, for taking the design reins of DTC and co-spearheading this new look. We thought the height of summer was the perfect time for a refresh, and just like every other year since the beginning of time, it’s going to be a hot one. Whether you’re also shedding an old style or just sweaty layers of clothing, we hope you’re ready for this year’s Red Hot Summer. If you’re decidedly not ready and you find yourself

cowering indoors under the nearest AC vent, allow us to coax you out with 55 things to do Downtown, all in a list that stretches throughout this entire edition. We’ve got places to go, things to see, free fun, and ways to stay cool or get even hotter, if that’s what you’re into. Turn the page to get started! I just told you to turn the page but since you’re clearly still reading, I’ll now highlight a few of the Red Hot Summer-soaked events in this issue. First off, there’s the Sertoma Fourth of July celebration in Seville Square. The patriotic party kicks off early and culminates in a huge fireworks display set to music. What’s redder and hotter than this red, white and blue action? If you’re looking to get a workout this month, how about a herd of raging bulls in hot pursuit for motivation? OK, they’re not real bulls, but roller derby gals can be just as intimidating. Check out page 32 for our interview with a few of the players who will be donning helmet horns and chasing you through the streets. We’ve also got a celebration of summer seafood with the Crab Cake Cook-Off, benefiting ARC Gateway on July 10. All the savory details are on page 23. And of course, don’t forget to pull out our Official Gallery Night Guide and take it with you on July 19 to find out where all the art, music and food is happening all over Downtown. I hope you take some of our tips and have an amazing, action packed Red Hot Summer that reaps you many summery lookbook-ish Instagram photos. I also hope you enjoy the new look of DTC. Do you? Do you love it? Hate it? Feel completely ambivalent because you’ve never read it before just now? (Welcome, newest fan!) Let me know at emily@ballingerpublishing.com.

Downtown Improvement Board

Park First and Enjoy Downtown Parking Downtown—as I hope you have heard, the Downtown Improvement Board will be converting the back-in parking spaces on North Palafox to head-in spaces here in the next few weeks. If you take a moment to think about the logic, head-in parking makes it very easy to accomplish the first step but very difficult to accomplish the second step: backing out into an active lane of traffic often when you cannot see until you are ¾ of the way into the lane. Back-in parking on the other hand has a more complicated first step: stopping in an active lane of traffic and backing into a parking space. Then however, the act of pulling out into an active lane is quite easy with good visibility. When the list of pros and cons are roughly equal, the consumer’s preference trumps. For those who park Downtown, many just didn’t like the uncomfortable and unfamiliar process of backing into a parking space. This was especially true for the one time visitor or the person that only comes Downtown a couple times a year and really doesn’t have the opportunity to become comfortable with the process. The striping project to change the current back-in spaces to pull-in spaces is being designed and bid as we speak and we hope to have the work completed by July.

4 July 2013 www.downtowncrowd.com

The purpose of limited time parking Downtown is to ensure that parking spaces are not “monopolized” by a person or groups of people. The spaces along the streets and in front of merchants are very important and are regulated to ensure that everybody coming Downtown can find a Ron Butlin parking space within a few blocks of where they DIB Executive Director intend to go. The overall success of the retail merchants depends on this. Just a reminder, if you need to park for a period longer than two hours, there is the Jefferson Street garage where you can park for as long as needed. The Jefferson Street garage is located on Jefferson Street between Garden and Romana and connects to Palafox Street through the brick breezeway adjacent to the Wine Bar. Please check out the garage and come stay as long as you like. The DIB is committed to projects that enhance the consumer’s positive experience in Downtown. Easy, hassle-free parking is an important key to our growth and success.

RED HOT The mercury is rising, and whether you plan to embrace the heat wave or keep icy cool, we’ve got enough fresh tips, hot spots and fun events to ensure you’ll never be bored through the Red Hot Summer. This entire issue of DTC is packed with our list of 55 things to do Downtown to fill those long days and steamy nights. Turn the page to get started.

What items would you consider your ultimate summer essentials? My Costa sunglasses and lots of sunscreen and towels—having a toddler has totally changed the way I think about summer time. Keeping a bag packed and ready to go is a must. And freeze pops. The cheap kind. During the summer are you more likely to embrace the heat or try to stay cool? Embrace the heat! I can’t stand the cold so if it’s even remotely warm or hot outside I hate to be cooped up. How will you embrace the heat Downtown this summer? Spending time outside at Evenings in Old Seville, outdoor lunches at my favorite place to eat Downtown, Hub Stacey’s and, of course, Blue Wahoos games!

Christopher Rosario

What items would you consider your ultimate summer essentials? Definitely water, an air conditioning unit, my girlfriend and little bit of extra cash. During the summer are you more likely to embrace the heat or try to stay cool? I embrace the heat, absolutely. Normally during the winter I gain weight, so it’s really nice to lose weight during the summer—just go out there and sweat it off. How will you embrace the heat Downtown this summer? I like walking around Downtown, eating outside. They’ve got that new area with the food trucks, so it’s nice to eat out over there.

RED HOT SUMMER

Sertoma Celebrates Independence Day with Pensacola For the past 18 years in Pensacola, local Sertoma clubs have shown us what the Fourth of July is all about, providing daylong celebrations and the largest fireworks display on the Gulf Coast. According to Sertoma International’s Mission Statement, “Sertoma exists for the high and noble purpose of SERvice TO MAnkind by communication of thoughts, ideas and concepts to accelerate human progress in health, education, freedom, and democracy.” Sertoma clubs in our area continuously raise funds for service projects, grants, and scholarships with a primary focus on aiding the hearing, speech, and language impaired. Co-chair Gena Hernandez has ensured the fun is everything you remember, including more live entertainment, arts, crafts, and food vendors than ever before. Committee member Angela Baroco Eddy is also excited for the children’s area this year, which is once again free of charge. KlaasKids, a search and rescue team for lost children, will be a main feature. “Parents can stop by and have their children fingerprinted and canine demonstrations will be available,” said Baroco Eddy. Additionally in the children’s area will be an array of activities including rock climbing, space jumps, pony rides, an obstacle course, and new to this year’s festivities, human hamster balls! Baroco Eddy adds, “The main mission of SERTOMA is to assist hearing ailed. There will be a SERTOMA booth in the center of the park collecting used hearing aids in any condition. We’re also going to have a great headline band, J Collins, an act out of Nashville. And of course the fireworks show is going to be fantastic as well.” The celebrations will begin at 11 am and conclude with the famed fireworks display starting at 9:05 pm after the 9 pm singing of the national anthem by Louis Butler. Remember to bring your radio as the show is once again synchronized 14 July 2013 www.downtowncrowd.com

with Cat Country 98.7. “The best viewing for the display will be along Bayfront Parkway. The show is over 20 minutes long–-it’s a long show and it really is very impressive. We remain one of the top 20 events for the month of July as listed by the Southeast Tourism Society,” said Baroco Eddy. Come the Fourth, as you stare up into the beautiful display of lights that emblemize our great nation’s birth and thriving existence, celebrate our freedom, honor all that has been sacrificed, and thank the organizations like Sertoma that work every day for human progress and democracy. For more information please visit pensacolafireworks.com.

Tips for Competitive Eating

The celebration includes a traditional Hot Dog Eating Contest at noon in the gazebo. This is your chance to be a champion, but don’t go in unprepared. While we can’t necessarily condone or encourage an activity that can so easily lead to choking and/or vomiting, we can offer some speed eating tips from around the internet and wish those hot dog desperados luck on their somewhat dubious quest for glory. Eat moderately leading up to the big day; don’t starve. It seems counterintuitive, but limiting food will actually shrink your stomach. You can try gradually expanding it in the weeks beforehand by eating fibrous, low-calorie foods like watermelon or lettuce, or gassy foods like cabbage. Find your perfect strategy. Some folks separate the bun and dog. Some minimize chewing time by dunking the bun in water or soda. Hey, this isn’t about savoring the taste! Watch videos of professional eaters and try a practice run to find what works for you. Go for some jogs. Sorry, it’s not all gluttony. Working on cardio will make it a little easier to breathe while stuffing your pie hole, and it’ll burn off some of the calories you’re about to consume. Wiggle with it. Supposedly, squirming around while chowing down will help pack it in. You’re already in an eating contest, so you’re not worried about looking cool. Might as well give this technique a shot.

2013 Pensacola Beach Air Show by Emily Lullo

The patriotic celebration doesn’t end at the Fourth of July this month. Take a short trip across two bridges to Pensacola Beach to witness exhilarating stunts and heart-stopping maneuvers at the Pensacola Beach Air Show on July 12 and 13. While the Blue Angels Flight Team will be sitting this year out, there will still be plenty to see and do at the beach on Friday and Saturday. Civilian aircraft will perform aerial acrobatics over the Gulf of Mexico during a weekend of high-flying fun. On Friday, July 12, the beach will host a full dress rehearsal, and on Saturday, July 13, the main event will take to the skies from 1-3 pm with a variety of aircraft from flight demonstration teams to an affable helicopter. Bring your beach chairs and picnic and settle into the white sands early in the day to beat traffic, which is sure to be busy for the weekend of events. Aircraft and teams participating in the Pensacola Beach Air Show include: Prometheus flown by Skip Stewart, Team Aero Dynamix (formerly known as Team RV), MX2 flown by Gary Ward, Extra 300SHP flown by Kevin Coleman, OTTO the Helicopter flown by Roger Buis, The Beech T-34 Mentor flown by the Lima Lima Flight Team, and 24 aircraft including two Warbird Jets.

Additionally, you can cap off the weekend with some live entertainment. Don’t miss the concert at the Gulfside Pavilion on Saturday at 7 pm featuring the TAMS! The TAMS have been entertaining and thrilling audiences for over 50 years. Known for such hits as “Be Young, Be Foolish, Be Happy,” “What Kind of Fool,” “I’ve Been Hurt” and “Untie Me.” For both shows, the water will be cleared at noon and the entertainment will get underway. They began the crab cake fundraiser as a way to increase awareness of their services to the community. What began as an annual get-together attended by about 50 people has grown to become a quickly sold-out event of 300 individuals. From Chef Irv Miller of Jackson’s Steakhouse “While the fund-raising aspect of the event is certainly Irv’s Coastal Crab Cakes successful, we also see the cook-off as one of our biggest Ingredients: friend-raisers of the year,” said Megan McLemore, 1 pound fresh jumbo lump blue crab development and fundraising manager for the organization. 4 tablespoons red sweet pepper, diced fine “It helps people become more aware of what we do in the 4 tablespoons red onion, diced fine community and of the talent our clients have.” 2 tablespoons Coleman’s dry mustard As individuals enter the event, they are given a glass to 1 tablespoon Old Bay seasoning sample wines and three poker chips to select their favorite 1 tablespoon Louisiana hot sauce crab cakes featured by up to 25 local restaurants and 2 ounces heavy whipping cream individual chefs. Do not break up lump crab. Place picked crabmeat in a large-size mixing bowl. Heat small-size sauté pan over medium heat and add butter. When butter begins to bubble, add the diced peppers and onions and sauté until tender, about 2 minutes. Transfer sautéed peppers and onions to a plate to cool. In a separate medium-size mixing bowl, whisk the egg to blend, then add the whipping cream, Old Bay seasoning, Louisiana hot sauce, dry mustard and cooled peppers. Whisk together. Pour this mixture over the crabmeat and delicately toss to blend evenly. Sprinkle the breadcrumbs over the mixture and gently toss again to blend. Let mixture sit for 30 minutes for breadcrumbs to absorb the wet mixture. Form into delicate mounds of 3- or 4-ounce patties. To cook, preheat a sauté pan or griddle on medium heat. Add 3 tablespoons oil and a small piece of butter. Combine flour and salt and pepper mixture, then lightly dust the crab cakes. Sauté about 3 minutes on each side until gold brown and firm.

Film by Josh Newby

The Lone Ranger

What I’ll be spending my $8 on:

The Conjuring

In theaters: July 19 Starring: Vera Farmiga, Patrick Wilson, Ron Livingston What I got from the preview: Using my own outstanding investigatory prowess, I have deduced that this movie features a husband and wife team of paranormal investigators. The Donovan song featured in the trailer leads me to believe the movie takes place in the late 1960s. And the things that go bump in the night insinuate this will be a very scary movie in which our couple faces demons without and within. Most notable for: The team behind this film has been responsible for more nightmares lately than I care to disclose, inspired by movies such as Sinister and Insidious. Unqualified critical observation: I’m not necessarily obsessed with the idea of seeing this movie, but given my other options for this month, this seems the most promising. If it sticks to the classic haunted house paradigm it represented in the trailer, this movie should be adequate summer horror movie fun.

In theaters: July 3 Starring: Johnny Depp, Armie Hammer, Helena Bonham Carter, William Fichtner What I got from the preview: Johnny Depp lets everyone see how gross he can look in this loose reimagining of the classic ex-Texas lawman who has entranced radio and television audiences for decades. A train robbery, a greedy property owner and lots of ridiculous special effects help distract us from the empty plot, which I’m still unsure of. Most notable for: This modern-day retelling of the original man with no name is being helmed by Gore Verbinski, director of such crimes against humanity as the latter three Pirates of the Caribbean movies. Unqualified critical observation: “Hi Ho, Silver! Away!” is what you should shout if your friends try to drag you to the box office to actually pay for this travesty. Verbinski’s affinity for unbelievable visuals and Depp’s knack for always playing the same version of Keith Richards has grossed too many millions for either to still be relevant.

Pacific Rim

In theaters: July 12 Starring: Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Ron Perlman, Charlie Day What I got from the preview: Watching this trailer, I could’ve sworn I was witnessing another Transformers or Battleship sequel. My eyes glazed over as I watched another hundred-million-dollar spectacle play out before me, thinking about that insurance premium I really need to mail in. All of a sudden, I saw Guillermo del Toro’s name (Pan’s Labyrinth, Hellboy, Mama) and I had renewed hope for this tired genre that involves robot warfare, society’s future hanging in the balance, and scared looking Asians. Most notable for: A big-name director attached to what seems like another forgettable summer action movie. Unqualified critical observation: Robots fighting each other is nothing new, and neither is getting discount talent from recognizable TV stars, but having del Toro in charge might just elevate this movie above its genre.

Grown Ups 2

In theaters: July 12 Starring: Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Chris Rock What I got from the preview: The crew from the first movie (which I’ll admit to missing, since it was in conflict with my previously scheduled plan of watching paint dry) returns to their hometown to reunite with their friends, and runs into the same awkward situations and unbelievable hijinks you’ve seen in every Adam Sandler movie to date. Most notable for: Unlike last month’s very funny This is the End, this movie packs as many unfunny, excomedians into the same film so they each have a chance to feel young again, interact with supporting actors who have real talent, and probably make more money doing so than any of us will ever see in our lifetime. Unqualified critical observation: Do you like watching unfunny, middle-aged men take turns at toilet humor and homophobia, all while objectifying women and reusing the same, tired jokes that were only slightly humorous when you were 12? Do you like this presented in a feature-length sitcom format that probably wouldn’t survive a trial run on ABC Family? If you answered yes, then this is the movie for you.

The Wolverine

In theaters: July 26 Starring: Hugh Jackman, Famke Janssen, Brian Lee What I got from the preview: Jean Grey shows up at the beginning of the trailer to freak everyone out, then Wolverine moves to Japan so that he can practice his martial arts and meet up with an enemy from his past who may have a big impact on his future…sequel. Most notable for: I lost count somewhere around the trailer for Days of Future Past, but I think this is the second actual Wolverine spin-off. Unqualified critical observation: The X-Men series for me has long been the Valentine’s Day of superhero yarns—too many characters, too many plots, too little concern for any of them. Wolverine’s six-pack is one of the more popular entries in the ever-evolving story though, so I may give this movie a chance, all while secretly hoping that Jennifer Lawrence shows up, even though I know Mystique exists in a separate X-Men universe, or whatever that guy was trying to tell me when I was in line waiting for Man of Steel last month.

Chow Downtown

Seville Quarter by Emily Lullo

Seville Quarter is probably best known as a multi-room entertainment complex that can offer guests a rollicking live piano show, a bass heavy dance party, or a low key cocktail to sip by a fountain—all in the same night. Many might also know about its hot, sweet beignets and fresh coffee available every morning and daily lunches, or the weekly wine tastings every Friday evening. But there’s an even longer list of special events, regular offerings, and community outreach that Seville Quarter takes part in that keep the calendar full and ever-changing. “The fun thing about it is we keep it fresh, we’re always coming up with new ideas,” says special events and marketing manager Buck Mitchell. This month some unique offerings include a Bastille Day-themed brunch and a Spanish style dinner and festival culminating in a Running of the Bulls, where runners will be pursued by roller derby players. The latter event is in its third year at Seville with plans to grow in the future. In addition to the slew of entertainment, there are many daily offerings that people might not consider when they think of Seville Quarter, like white tablecloths and seafood dinners. “A lot of people don’t know that we do dinner, which we’ve done for over 40 years,” says Mitchell. “We have a terrific chef, Brandon Melton, who really puts out some great food.” While many know that casual bar fare like wings and burgers is available every night in the Quarter, it’s something of a hidden gem for finer fare, including dinner features like steak or local seafood. The kitchen is open for every meal of the day, starting at 7 am with breakfast and into the popular lunch hour and dinner. On Sundays, brunch is accompanied by local jazz musicians like 18 String Army or Joe Occhipinti and diners can try chef’s brunch specials, an array a la carte items, or just a basket of beignets along with endless mimosas or bloody Marys. One thing well known about Seville is its nightly entertainment. Mitchell says he’s been working to keep the acts diverse, mixing in new additions and popular favorites to the lineups in the various rooms. “Finding somebody new is great. We’re certainly playing bands like the Modern Eldorados, Timberhawk, Big Jim Brown—people love to come out and see those guys. There’s always something for everyone at Seville,” Mitchell says. “If you don’t like one room, you might come check out the next room, from rhythm and blues, to rock ‘n’ roll to laidback funk.” 26 July 2013 www.downtowncrowd.com

Recently Seville started hosting the local Blues Society’s Monday Night Blues Concerts, as well as jazz singer Kitt Lough every Tuesday night. If you’d rather get up and move than sit back and listen, Phineas Phogg’s is always there for high energy dancing, and the extremely popular interactive showcase of Dueling Pianos will tickle the ivories every Wednesday through Saturday starting at 8 pm in Rosie O’Grady’s. The weekly college night has recently been revamped to include beer pong and cornhole tournaments in Apple Annie’s to tap into the popular party game trend. Another popular time to visit Seville Quarter is on Gallery Night, when artists’ booths line the street in front of the complex with a wide array of art to peruse and buy. “It’s a fun show, we always tell people to start and end your Gallery Night at Seville,” Mitchell says. “It’s a great sight, it’s got that full festival feel.” There’s often an extra sight to take in at Seville’s events. May’s Gallery Night included a hot rod car show and this month’s edition on July 19 will feature a “chupinazo,” or opening ceremony for the following day’s Running of the Bulls at Seville. Whether stopping by Seville for a favorite old standby or to see what’s new, guests can have a bit of both pretty much every night of the week. For a good time, a great meal, and something a little out of the ordinary, Seville Quarter honors its storied history while staying innovative with its many offerings.

The

Mole Hole

by Ellie Grabski Looking for a relaxing and unique shopping experience? Cross the threshold of this quaint shop and be instantly put at ease by the subtle aroma of candles, the soft chime of music and the aesthetically pleasing product selection. The Mole Hole, located just off Seville Square at 425 E. Zaragosa St., first opened in 1982 and celebrated its 31st birthday this past May. Once a franchise, The Mole Hole now operates as an individually owned store that does its own buying, one among 20 or so remaining in the country. Store owner Sandra Espy says, “I had no retail experience but had wanted to do the store for awhile. My sister and my mom and I would come down to Seville and shop. There were near 45 stores in the early 80s down here. I just loved this area; I loved the feel of it. So I thought this would be a great place to do it. I love this district and I love Downtown.” Walking through the shop, patrons will find tables full of interesting items begging them to lean in and admire more closely. “I look for a lot of fine handcrafted items, mainly American artists, as much as I can,” says Espy. “Not things you see in major chain type stores, more of the small artists and craftsman type products.” Jewelry is a very popular item at The Mole Hole and the items featured in the store displays reflect Espy’s passion for the products. Among the exquisite collection are coveted pieces by jewelry designer Tabra Tunoa, whose work is only sold in select stores around the country. Espy believes what makes her store unique is her product offering as well as “individual service,” and “a stress free environment that you can come into and look for yourself or someone else.” Apart from jewelry The Mole Hole also offers very popular greeting cards, as well as soaps, candles, decor, artwork and much more.

In order to offer Pensacola and its visitors the most distinctive range of products, Espy attends trade and craft shows in search of new merchandise. “If anything inspires me, it’s my love of nature. I certainly have in mind that we’re coastal when I buy art, especially because I know people want to decorate with things that look like this area and also visitors want to take something home that looks like Pensacola,” said Espy. Having been a part of the Downtown community for the last 31 years, Espy is clearly very enthusiastic about her store and the Seville area. “I just love coming to work every day. I love working with the people who shop Downtown and having my own business because of the freedom of doing what I want to do. I’ve raised two kids in this business. I brought them to work with me more than a couple times. I love the buying–I love the people.” The Mole Hole is open Monday through Saturday from 10 to 5 pm and has additional Sunday hours in the month of December from 1 to 5 pm. Stop by the shop today!

Downtown Pensacola’s Historic District is the perfect place to celebrate the Red Hot Summer! Treat yourself to a new airy summer dress or blouse, or add some sun-soaked accessories to your look. Cool off with an iced coffee, a nutritious smoothie, some decadent gelato or a cold pint of locally brewed beer. The Sertoma Fourth of July celebration will bring a festive and patriotic atmosphere to the Historic District with music, food, kids activities and a great vantage point from which to watch fireworks light up the night sky over the bay. This month you can also head to the heart of the Historic District for the new season of Evenings in Olde Seville Square on Thursday nights starting at 7 pm. Bring a picnic or stop at one of the many restaurants in the area, and be sure to take a stroll around the area to see what’s new! This month is also a great time to beat the summer brain drain with the many museums and educational tours available in the District. The Historic District isn’t only for special events, though. It’s the perfect place for a jog along the waterfront or the picturesque historic streets, or just a leisurely day of walking and window shopping with a friend. Running of the Bulls Have you ever dreamed of running with the bulls at the annual festival in Spain, yet don’t have the means or the cojones to actually travel across the world and do it? Worry not—this month brings a cheat code for your bucket list! July 18-20 will mark the third annual Fiesta de San Fermin and Running of the Bulls at Seville Quarter. Pensacola’s version of Pamploma, Spain’s event celebrates our city’s Spanish heritage and the daring of the encierro, or bull run, kicking off with a Spanish inspired Wine Pairing Dinner on Thursday, July 18 at Seville Quarter. On Friday, July 19, an opening celebration will be held during Gallery Night featuring live entertainment, food, and a procession honoring San Fermin, the Patron Saint of Pamplona. On Saturday, July 20 at 9 am, the Running of the Bulls will commence. Runners are required to wear white shirt and pants of shorts and a red bandana or piece of red cloth around the waist and neck. A rocket will blast to start off the run, another to announce the bulls’ release, and a final one to end the run and kick off the after party for runners and spectators. Instead of a herd of actual raging cattle in hot pursuit, there will be a bevy of roller derby players wielding wiffle bats at slowpokes, so your life will never really be in danger—or will it? DTC spoke with three members of the Pensacola Roller Gurlz to get the details on the possible carnage. DTC: Tell me a bit about your training regimen for roller derby. Warrant Beauty: We have practice for two hours three times a week, with drills, scrimmage and endurance training. We have some awesome sponsors Powerhouse Gym and Razors Edge Fitness Cross Fit, which give our Gurlz some great outlets to work out. We are in top physical condition with a great fondness for hitting. DTC: How do you get into the bull mindset before the event? Spuds McKenzie: By putting my gear on with my team and talking about the particular people we want to hit and how hard we’re going to hit them. Clover Kill: It’s sort of like the horns are magical because when you strap on your helmet and skates you get the feeling of power of being the bull! DTC: Just how scared of you should runners be? Will you show any mercy? Clover Kill: They should be pretty intimidated. I usually get some good yells from hits and also a lot of butt rubbing. I am very merciful unless they taunt me. If they make that mistake I will make them pay. Spuds McKenzie: We go easy on the kids and older folks. The rest of you are fair game! 32 July 2013 www.downtowncrowd.com

RED HOT SUMMER

by Emily Lullo

DTC: Is there any particular strategy or technique to your wiffle bat attacks, or is it more of a free-for-all? Warrant Beauty: Timing is key for the perfect strike. Too far away and the bat doesn’t make full contact; too close and you can’t get the right arc in your swing. Behind to the left side to a 45 degree angle: perfect. Spuds McKenzie: Last year my derby wife and I took a shortcut and hid behind an SUV and ambushed the runners as they got there. It was quite effective. DTC: Do you have any advice for runners to avoid or at least minimize the chances of being brutalized? Warrant Beauty: Why would they want to? Enjoy the pain. If you can’t take it, my advice would be run fast and get it over with. Spuds McKenzie: Don’t act scared; we can smell fear. Also, don’t try to touch us or take our bats because you will be punished.
