PEOPLE OFTEN SAY that they hate drama, but people who say that somehow always seem to be in the throes of catty conflicts, Twitter wars, and passive aggressive battle royales with frenemies near and far. I, on the other hand, love drama. Sure, I’ll giddily watch a friendship implode on a Facebook comment thread any day, but what I’m talking about is drama of the performance variety. This month, Downtown is all about the drama in the best way possible. March brings shows and performance pieces that will immerse you in otherworldly delights, make you laugh, and perhaps even teach you a thing or two. On March 19-23, Cirque du Soleil will set up shop at the Pensacola Bay Center for a show entitled Varekai. Cirque du Soleil is known for bringing fantastical worlds to life with awe-inspiring performances that are at once poignant and
comical, along with a vibrant backdrop of colorful sets and live music. See the story on page 10. If Cirque du Soleil makes you want to run away to the circus yourself, you can at least take a jaunt to PLT’s Cabaret Circus Nouveau event on March 29. This annual themed party will be a night of big top thrills, sights and adventures happening throughout the Pensacola Cultural Center. Get the details on page 25. Additionally, the Gulf Coast Renaissance Faire will come to town March 1-2. Guests will be transported back to the time when European explorers first set foot in Pensacola, when pirates roamed and disagreements were handled with the sword. Come see the tense drama of live jousting or just enjoy some gypsy dancers and games of skill. All that and much more awaits ye at this annual celebration of creative anachronism! Also in this issue, we spoke with the zany brains behind local improv troupe Improvable Cause, which performs each month at Pensacola Little Theatre. Anything can happen onstage during an improv performance, and with talented players and some audience suggestions, the results are highly entertaining. If you haven’t yet seen their show, it’s time to loosen your morals and pay them a visit. Find out more on page 9. If you still need a dose of drama, there’s few better places to turn than to our local opera, which will bring to life the classic fairytale of Cinderella on March 21 and 23. Combining theatre, symphony and spectacular vocal performances for a first class opera production, Pensacola Opera will close out its 31st season with this timeless tale. Whether you prefer your drama low brow or high, with whimsy or raunchiness, there’s an absorbing experience to suit your tastes this month. And if you still prefer to follow it up with a little drama dessert of reading 50-plus comments in a rapidly deteriorating Facebook debate while shrouded in a Snuggie, grab the popcorn and come be my frenemy.

KHON’S Bringing Southeast Asia to Downtown Pensacola
By Hannah Levya
·
PALAFOX IS ABOUT to get an injection of Southeast Asian flavors, and people couldn’t be more excited. Chef Dot Chap and owner and general manager Winston Evans are opening Khon’s, a sushi and Asian fusion restaurant later this month in the space that used to house Nacho Daddies. Chap, who already has a loyal following from his time as head sushi chef at Bonsai Sushi at The Hilton on Pensacola Beach, will be bringing his talents closer to his customer base. “A lot of people wanted him down on Palafox,” said Evans. “This spot opened up, and we took it.” The restaurant, though in a prime location, is small, with seating for just 40 people inside and an additional 10-15 seats outside when the weather is nice. That will make accommodating all of Chap’s eager fans difficult at first. The response has be overwhelmingly positive so far, with the Khon’s on Palafox Facebook page getting over 600 likes in just 48 hours. “It’s been out of control,” said Chap, who hopes to spend most of his time behind the sushi bar once the staff is fully trained and things settle down after the opening. In addition to Chap’s famous sushi, Khon’s menu focuses on the Southeast Asian comfort food the chef grew up eating. The son of a Cambodian father (the restaurant is named after him) and a Chinese-Vietnamese mother, Chap was born in Cambodia and immigrated to the U.S. with his family as refugees. Growing up without a lot of money helped shape his work ethic, and Chap worked his way through the restaurant industry while first getting a degree in history and then 6

graduating from the Art Institute of Atlanta. “We worked hard to make money. We were self-sufficient kids,” said Chap, whose strong sense of identity and passion for what he does is evident. “I’m a Capricorn. We’re billy goats. We bust our butts to get to the top.” While the name is a nod to Chap’s dad, the food pays homage to his mom’s cooking. Traditional dishes like satay, pho and curry will be on the menu with twists for American palates, and customers will also be allowed to create meals to their liking with build-your-own phos and curries. The ingredients will also be of the best quality, with organic vegetables and meat and sustainable fish for the sushi bar. “We’re trying to be as ecoconscious as possible,” said Evans, noting that they eventually want to start growing their own microgreens in-house.
“We’re trying to keep it not too crazy,” said Chap. “There’s nothing showy about it. The only showy thing is the sushi.” Though the food may be exotic, Chap and Evans both want to maintain a casual atmosphere. “I don’t want to be snobby at all,” said Chap, who’s accustomed to the laidback beach crowd. “If you come in board shorts and flip flops, that’s fine.” Both Chap and Evans see Khon’s as filling a void in Downtown Pensacola, where the scene is predictably dominated by American and Southern food. As the city grows, so do the tastes of the people. “We’re the last piece of the puzzle on Palafox,” said Chap.

AN IMPROVABLE CAUSE
Larsen Lien learns that improv is a seriously funny business
LAST YEAR, THE members of Improvable Cause had to put their quick thinking into action when their normal venue closed and they were forced to find a new location to perform within five days. “We just Facebooked everybody and tried to put out the word and [the Pensacola Little Theatre] was like, ‘Yeah, come on,’” said Debi Dunkerley, director of Improvable Cause. The nine year old improvisational group started at the Silver Screen Theater, but when the Silver Screen closed in September 2013 with little notice, Dunkerley and her crew had to think on their feet to find their new home. Five months later, Improvable Cause is operating stronger than ever. And once the troupe found its footing, it began reaching out to more of the community. “We have never really done advertising or any strong marketing campaign because when we first started, we were comfortable with people who knew what improv comedy was coming to our shows first, us then impressing them and getting better at what we do and then having that word of mouth spread,” Darren Campbell, an Improvable Cause performer, said.
Word of the comedy troupe is indeed spreading, with attendance reaching an estimated 65 percent to more than capacity at nearly every show. The troupe performs their improvisational comedy on the first Saturday of every month for only $7 at 10:30 pm in the PLT Court Room. The following Sunday they host two-hour workshops for $20, during which anyone can come and join the regular performers in acting exercises and improvisational methods. But for those skeptical about getting involved in fast-paced environment of improv, Dunkerley said it’s a helpful tool for almost anyone. “I had such bad stage fright when I first started that I was laid up with nausea and thought I was going to throw up every time and was hyperventilating,” Dunkerley said. “But now I can go out and do a show or give a talk. … You could put thousands of people in front of me and I could talk to them no problem. It’s about building basic confidence and feeling comfortable with yourself.” Improv differs from theater acting in that there are no scripts, no plans and no back-up plans. Performers walk on the stage not knowing what to expect or where the scene will take them. “If you and I were in a scene together on stage, my first job would be to make you look good, and your first job would be to make me look good,” she said. “It’s the opposite of stand up comedy, where you’re up there like, ‘I’m in the limelight.’ You have to have complete and total trust in your scene partner because you’re up there without a script or anything. All you have is your scene partner and that’s it.” Since Dunkerley and her troupe are obviously no strangers to thinking quickly and acting on their
feet, the surprise relocation five months ago has not fazed them. Dunkerley said knowing everyone at the PLT and having such a great environment is like coming home, and her troupe members seem to agree. “It’s a great location, and it’s very familiar,” Campbell said. “We now have a space where we can sufficiently house and educate on what we do. We’re really grateful to be Downtown.”

VAREKAI

AS ANYONE WHO has seen the Canadian performance company Cirque du Soleil knows, each show provides its own immersive and fantastical experience. The shows captivate audiences the world over with performers, set pieces and live music that seems to have sprung from another world of vivid colors and imaginative characters. This month the Pensacola Bay Center will play host to the artistic mix of circus and street performance March 19-23 for a show called Varekai. The setting for Varekai is deep within a forest

at the summit of a volcano, where a solitary man called Icarus is parachuted from the sky into the shadowy trees. Here he finds a whimsical world of creatures and characters that lead him on an extraordinary adventure. Icarus meets La Promise (The Betrothed), an exotic creature that enraptures him, and La Guide, a wise, grandfatherly elder who seeks to bring about change, among others. Interwoven with the story, which will be told more through movement, sound, and choreography than language, awe-inspiring circus performances will fill the stage. Aerial hoops and straps, juggling,
Russian swings, Georgian dance, and balancing feats will all be showcased. There will also be clown acts, but with a Cirque du Soleil twist that make them unlike any clowns you’ve seen before in a typical circus. Kaleidoscopic costumes and makeup add another layer of visual interest to this showcase of incredible artistry and talent. Tickets to Varekai start at $45 and are available through pensacolabaycenter.com. For more information about the show, visit cirquedusoleil.com.

A Night at the Opera
THIS YEAR’S PENSACOLA Opera seasoncloser is the enchanting fairytale Cinderella. This classic fairytale has seen dozens of reincarnations and variations over the years, and the opera on March 21 and 23, composed by Gioachino Rossini, promises to be a beautiful production based off of the original fairytale. Set in Italy in the 18th century, this classic comedic tale of love’s triumph over evil finds many departures from the well-known Disney version. While there is no fairy godmother, pumpkinstyled carriage or glass slipper, this Cinderella nevertheless finds herself battling familial cruelty for the love of her Prince Charming. The composer responsible for The Barber of Seville brings this timehonored presentation to the audience with hilarity, catchy tunes, complex, deep characters and unmatched orchestration. This romance is sure to delight all members of its assuredly varied audience, and in order to ensure everyone has a chance to discover the magic for themselves, the Pensacola Opera has planned a host of ancillary events to accompany its production. For the first time in Pensacola Opera history, there will be a special pre-matinee event especially

for kids. The Cinderella Tea Party invites princes and princesses 12-years-old and under to create a lasting memory as they enjoy tea, sandwiches and cake and the company of some of the costumed cast. The Cinderella Tea Party will be at the Saenger Theatre at 12 pm, immediately before Sunday’s matinee. As usual, Meet the Artists luncheons provide an opportunity for community members to meet the singers, directors and designers involved in Cinderella. Learn more about the production and plot on March 11 at 11:30 am at Heritage Hall in Seville Quarter. A free Gallery Talk, hosted at the Pensacola Museum of Art at 3 pm on March 16, will highlight the relationship between visual art, history and music in the opera. An art historian and Pensacola Opera’s education director will be on hand to answer questions, and the Artists in Residence will provide entertainment with excerpts from the show. Finally, the Director’s Champagne Brunch, at 11:45 am on March 23 at Jackson’s Steakhouse, presents a forum for Artistic Director Kyle Marrero to give a lively and entertaining presentation about the show. To attend any of these events, contact the Pensacola Opera at 433-6737. Tickets for Cinderella range from $20 to $110. The show is March 21 at 7:30 pm and March 23 at 2 pm at the Saenger.

Pensacola’s history comes out of the Renaissance. The Renaissance was “a period of discovery, of rebirth and renewal and coming out of the dark end with light and knowledge. And with that came an age of exploration, which included the Spanish exploration, which brought us Pensacola.
”
Gulf Coast Renaissance Faire & Piratefest by Larsen Lien
·
EMBARKING ON ITS 13th year, the Gulf Coast Renaissance Faire has yet to slow down. Not only will the faire be adding a fifth stage this year, but it will also feature Piratefest. Adding the Piratefest aspect of the faire was an easy decision for Steven Melei, faire president. “The Renaissance Faire already had a good load of pirates in it every time, so it just made sense,” Melei said. “You had pirates as far back as you can go, when people started exploring the water. Even on land, there were land pirates. So along that vein, they’ve always been there. In the Renaissance, there were pirates.” The new addition to the faire will also include the Pirate Olympics for those 18 years and older. On March 1, attendees can use their day passes to join the Pirate Olympics later that evening. Participants will choose teams to compete in a number of fun, pirated-themed activities, such as a three-legged race and “best pirate talk,” to earn the title of Ultimate Pirate. Other attractions this year include a multitude of dance troupes, a variety of fire-based performances, and a number of acts involving swords. One of the most popular events, though, is the jousting tournament. This year, the stars of the History Channel’s Full Metal Jousting will be the honorary participants. The host of the show, Shane Adams, is a respected Canadian jouster with a number of international accolades.
The jousts and other performances give the event an air of historical accuracy as attendees wander through the grounds. While they do their best to be as accurate as possible in some areas, that is not always their main goal, Melei said. “Historical accuracy is not our goal with this event. Historical interest is what we’re trying to create, especially in the youth,” he said. “So hopefully with this fun, semi-historically accurate event that we do, we’re instilling some imagination and some interest in the youth through history.” Even hosting the faire in Pensacola contributes to the historical aspect of the event. “This area particularly cries out to have something along these lines,” Melei said when asked why Pensacola made such a great location. “Pensacola’s history comes out of the Renaissance. The Renaissance was a period of discovery, of rebirth and renewal and coming out of the dark end with light and knowledge. And with that came an age of exploration, which included the Spanish exploration, which brought us Pensacola.” The Gulf Coast Renaissance Faire is welcoming to everyone. Its website has a number of explanatory pages for those who are new to the Renaissance Faire scene. The tutorials teach you about knights’ armor, how to create your own sigil, and what to wear, even for the laziest of attendees.
The festival will be held March 1-2 from 10 am-5 pm at the Pensacola Interstate Fairgrounds. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for children and free for those 4 years old and younger. For more information, visit their website at gcrf.us. 14

GARDEN STREET CAR WASH has a long, rich history in the Downtown area. Located at 532 W. Garden Street, the car wash opened in 1951 as Pensacola Auto Wash and was the first automated car wash in the state. After over 50 years in operation and a brief closure in 2009, the car wash reopened in 2012 with its current name and continues to serve the Pensacola community with a dedication to excellence and detail. The professionals at Garden Street Car Wash bring the personal touch back to auto care. At a
time when many car washes use automated brush systems to scrub away dirt and grime, Garden Street Car Wash prides itself on being a locallyowned, full hand wash, a feature that co-owner Shawn Martin says has definite advantages over other machine wash services. “Machines don’t know what needs to be wiped a few times. They don’t see corners, they don’t see anything,” Martin said. “At a hand wash, you’ve got guys who can look at the car, know a problem area, and get everything cleaned as thoroughly as they can.” Martin admits he knew very little about cars or detailing before opening the car wash. With help from his crew of workers with decades of experience and a lot of researching, Martin now considers himself and his team to be masters of the trade. Garden Street Car Wash offers everything from a basic wash and vacuum to cleaning motors and carpets. They also offer detailing services performed by a specialist with over 20 years of experience in the luxury automobile industry. If you live or work in the Downtown area, you can even take advantage of Garden Street Car Wash’s insured pickup and delivery service. For Downtown
customers who purchase at least a full service wash, the company can pick up your vehicle, complete the services, and return it for a small convenience fee. Martin says this is a great option for anyone who wants to get their car washed during their lunch break, and he assures that your car is in good hands with the Garden Street Car Wash crew. “All our employees take a lot of pride in what they do,” said Martin. “They clean your car like it’s their own, and they always want to make sure they do the best job they can.”

300: Rise of an Empire
What I’ll be spending my $8 on:
Muppets Most Wanted
In theaters: March 21 Starring: Tina Fey, Ricky Gervais, Ty Burrell What I got from the preview: A dastardly amphibian jewel thief poses as Kermit the Frog in order to frame the real Mr. Miss Piggy for the crime. Musical numbers ensue, of course, as do celebrity cameos, heartfelt humor, and terrible German accents, because this is a Muppets movie after all. Most notable for: This second entry in the reinvigorated franchise introduces the iconic fleece characters to a new generation of film-goers—and reminds the older generation how much we love these absurdist, burlesque and self-referential forces of comedy. Unqualified critical observation: The first movie in the new series, The Muppets, was one of the most shamelessly joyful filmgoing experiences I can remember having. Outfitted in Muppets gear, I’ve never been so proud to purchase a movie ticket and have parents steer their children’s eyes away from me. The original’s cast, which included Jason Segel and Amy Adams, were the human embodiment of Muppet joy. The second installment’s cast is not quite as exciting, with the exception of Tina Fey, but I still firmly believe that the legendary puppets will once again sing and joke their way into my oddly childlike 25-year-old heart.
22
March 2014 downtowncrowd.com
In theaters: March 7 Starring: Rodrigo Santoro, Lena Headey, Eva Green What I got from the preview: See if you can keep track of this convoluted, unnecessary and only vaguely historical plot: the Greek general Themistokles (which must’ve been a pain for young Themistokles to learn how to spell) gathers a group of amateur warriors to fight against invading Persian forces, who are led by some sort of mortal-turned-god (think Jay-Z). Most notable for: A theatrical sequel to the 2006 Zack Snyder and Gerard Butler special effects vehicle is pretty superfluous if you think about it, but this movie’s audience probably doesn’t think much. Unqualified critical observation: Eighteen-year-old Josh, with his misguided anger and lack of testosterone, really loved the original 300. I’ll never know if I’ve matured since then to want something more than slow-motion action sequences, or this sequel just pales in comparison to the original, because I won’t be seeing this to find out. No one watches these things for plot, anyway. Bros everywhere will soon gather together in rare harmony to drink smuggled alcohol and watch muscley dudes drip in sweat while fighting nameless hordes of computer generated foreigners.
Need for Speed
In theaters: March 14 Starring: Aaron Paul, Dominic Cooper, Scott Mescudi What I got from the preview: Aaron Paul looks like a Backstreet Boy in this movie about a streetcar racer who has been recently released from prison, only to continue the activity to avenge the businessman who framed him for…street racing? Listen carefully for dialogue like, “Racing is an art,” and, “Let’s settle this behind the wheel.” Most notable for: The long-running video game franchise gets the Fast and Furious treatment in this film featuring Aaron Paul of Breaking Bad fame in his first film role since the show tragically ended. Unqualified critical observation: How the mighty have fallen. A great video game will be tainted by this surely unsuccessful foray into film, and the actor who brought to life Jesse Pinkman, meth dealer/user and expletiveusing extraordinaire, is reduced to making various aggressive faces behind the wheel of a car. There’s nothing wrong with making movies for teenage boys, but why not make them better?
Divergent
In theaters: March 21 Starring: Shailene Woodley, Kate Winslet What I got from the preview: An authoritarian government claims that no child should be left behind and sorts youngsters into specified categories based on their physical and mental abilities. When a young teenage girl sees the obvious problem with standardized testing and showcases her special mind that cannot be classified, her life is threatened as she bands together with other unique individuals to fight the man. Most notable for: This movie has more talent in it than your usual young adult book adaptation—Woodley especially, who made my wife ask, “Why are you crying?” during last year’s The Spectacular Now and who will likely do it again in this year’s The Fault in Our Stars. Unqualified critical observation: This interesting though unrealistic premise will probably generate a movie worth seeing at a matinee showing, but it just does not have the same groundbreaking characteristics as The Hunger Games or Harry Potter.
Noah
In theaters: March 28 Starring: Russell Crowe, Jennifer Connelly, Anthony Hopkins, Emma Watson What I got from the preview: The Biblical saga of Noah comes to the silver screen in what hopefully marks a resurgence of lavish, big screen spectacles. You know the story: God promises to flood the earth, Noah and his family gather up two of every kind of animal, people mock him for doing so, Noah and family share a hearty laugh as almost everyone they’ve ever known dies a terrible death while no doubt screaming for rescue. Most notable for: Noah is notable for a lot of things. Darren Aronofsky (Black Swan, The Wrestler, Requiem for a Dream) is at the helm, the cast is one of the best in recent memory, and climate conservation undertones have been rumored. Unqualified critical observation: This was almost my pick of the month, and I will surely see this opening night. Well-developed, impressive, expertly crafted three-hour movie experiences are too rare nowadays, and I’m anxious to see what spin Aronofsky, who is known for dark material, puts on the classic tale. Regardless of your beliefs, the story is enthralling and well overdue for a movie adaptation. I can’t think of a better team to do so.
