Editor ’s Corner
Publisher Malcolm Ballinger
THOUGH WE’RE NOW closing in on the final quarter of the year and the beginning of fall, September is largely an extension of summer. Around here it’s still hot, there’s a distinct lack of changing leaf colors, and with the summer rains finally abating there are plenty of beach days still to come. Of course, I recommend eschewing the white sands and sunburns in favor of the historic streets of Downtown where September is bringing generous servings of a few other summer staples: beer, seafood and festivals. These things are what make
a sunny day outdoors on the Gulf Coast worth it. They’re what make the insufferable heat bearable, and we put our own Panhandle spin on all of them this month. The first weekend of September brings the Emerald Coast Beer Festival, featuring a beer tasting dinner and then a tasting event encompassing all of Seville Quarter’s expansive complex and offering a stupefying number of choices for the thirsty taster. You can attempt to sip from pale down to porter, or stick to variations on your favorite style, but either way the outcome is the same: a belly full of exotic beers and a new favorite you may or may not ever get to try again. The month will close out with the Fiesta of Five Flags Seafood Festival, now in its 36th year and going strong. The popular annual fest celebrates the cherished tradition of eating yummy seafood in endless forms from fried coconut shrimp to rich, hearty gumbo. Attendees can walk off the fare while browsing over 140 booths of artisans and craftsmen displaying their work. September also features another edition of Gallery Night. With Downtown constantly growing, the event now offers a chance for revelers to not only see the work of local artists and hear live music filling the streets, but also to explore its growth and changes while experiencing Downtown in all her glory. Come on down on Friday, Sept. 20 and see what’s new, or what’s new to you.

Downtown Pensacola Moves Forward Into Fall
·
IT’S BEEN A busy and exciting summer for Downtown Pensacola and as we enter fall the activities don’t stop! Sept. 20 will mark the kickoff of our series of fall Gallery Nights. As the success of Gallery Night continues to grow, the support of the Official Participants is essential. Gallery Night, which is hosted by the Downtown Improvement Board, is funded by the Official Participants. The continued support of Gallery Night by the Official Participants is necessary to ensure the future of Gallery Nights as they continue to benefit Downtown businesses and Downtown Pensacola as a whole. What defines an “Official Participant?” Gallery Night Official Participant venues feature local artists, entertainment and cuisine and draw thousands of attendees to the free event. As the “Official Gallery Night Guide,” the DTC features a map and event listings for the Official Participants. When attending Gallery Night be sure to look for the Official Participant poster in business windows and show your appreciation with a compliment, a thank you, or maybe even a purchase! If you are a Downtown business interested in supporting Gallery Night by becoming an Official Participant, visit our website at www. downtownpensacola.com. Gallery Night begins at 5 pm with the streets remaining closed until midnight. Gallery Night street closure is made possible through the sponsorship of Stella Artois. Another Downtown Pensacola favorite, the Palafox Market, is having an amazing summer season that is sure to continue into the fall. Many of the vendors change weekly and seasonal items mean there is always something new. With September comes the beginning of a wide variety of fall produce such as kale and squash. In addition, the Palafox Market is once again participating in America’s Favorite Farmer’s Market Competition and is currently #3 in the top 100 Farmers’ Markets and is #1 in Florida! Please keep Palafox Market at #1 by pledging your support to shop the market on Saturdays. It’s quick, easy and a great way to let everyone know about what a true gem Palafox Market to Downtown Pensacola. Visit our website at www. palafoxmarket.com to learn how to pledge. Oct. 5 will mark the return of a Downtown Pensacola favorite with the Sixth Annual Wine Festival. This Annual Wine Festival is a collaborative event created by the fine dining restaurants and wine merchants of Downtown Pensacola and the Pensacola Downtown Improvement Board. Now in its sixth year, the Annual Wine Festival is collaborating to bring you the best wine festival yet. You can enjoy the 2013 Wine Festival on the rooftop of the Jefferson Street Parking Garage. The roof space will offer an excellent view as the space is transformed with vendors, decor and lively music in the core of the historic district. Enjoy tastings of over 200 wines from 20 different wine distributors. The event will take place Saturday, Oct. 5, 2013 from 3 pm to 6 pm, so make your plans now to dine with us in Downtown Pensacola afterwards. There are many fine dining and unique restaurants close by. For a list of the variety offered, visit our website at www.downtownpensacola.com. This event will take place rain or shine. Tickets are $35 pre-sale and $40 the day of the event. In other DIB news, the Executive Board, director, staff, committee members, residents and business leaders from the Downtown District met to discuss organizational goals and objectives for 2013-2014 at the Annual Retreat held 4 Sept 2013 www.downtowncrowd.com
on July 25 at the Atlas Oyster House. The focus for 2013-2014 is centered around the expansion of quality retail, residential growth, visitors - both local and tourists, economic impact of Downtown Pensacola and enhanced collaboration among key stakeholders and outside agencies and organizations. Last but not least, we are very excited that Phase I of the Downtown Bollard Project is underway. You will see crews placing round cylinders in key streets Downtown along Palafox Place. This will allow bollards to be placed in the streets for special events. The use of the bollards Hilary M. Gilles will allow for a reduction in the number of Special Events Manager uniformed policemen necessary to service an event and will be more pedestrian friendly as access points to Palafox Place and the surrounding areas. Phase I is primarily along Palafox Place while Phase II will focus on Government Street east to Tarragona. It is anticipated that the initial “test run” will be during the Sept. 20 Gallery Night celebration. Don’t be left out, join us as we “Fall” into fun in Downtown Pensacola!

SEAFOOD FESTIVAL
·
SEAFOOD LOVERS REJOICE! The Fiesta of Five Flags Pensacola Seafood Festival is once again upon us. Now in its 36th year, the popular fest will be making waves in Seville Square as well as Fountain and Bartram Parks from Friday, Sept. 27 until Sunday, Sept. 29, offering fun for young and old with activities, entertainment and scrumptious seafood served up from carefully chosen vendors. The seafood is the star of the show, and almost any ocean delicacy can be found at the festival, whether it’s a delicate crabcake or a Southern fried poboy sandwich. “What people don’t realize is that most of them are local vendors, which is nice,” says Fiesta event coordinator Mallory Wilson. “We have a lot of our regular vendors and we have some new ones this year.” For a taste of some of the Gulf’s local restaurants, visit the Gulf to Table area in Fountain Park, where local restaurants like the Fish House and will be selling tapassized portions of signature dishes. If you love watching chefs in action, the Seafood Grille will have
cooking demonstrations throughout the weekend. Hungry attendees who don’t have constant cravings of fish and crustaceans can munch on roasted corn, snow cones, Sonny’s barbecue, gourmet popsicles or other items, and there will be even more options for washing down the feast. “There is going to be a beer garden this year in Fountain Park featuring craft beers,” Wilson says. “We’re going to have a much larger selection than we’ve had in years’ past.” Between bouts of chowing down, attendees can check out up to 140 arts and crafts vendors from all over the U.S. located throughout Seville Square. Many vendors feature work like paintings or sculptures that are sea life related, but Wilson says there are also a wide variety of items like jewelry, home and garden décor, and a mix of many other unique wares that attendees can peruse and purchase. Families with young ones can take advantage of a children’s area in Bartram Park on Saturday and Sunday. For a small fee, kids can get faces painted, make crafts, play games, race remote controlled cars or even roll around a pool of water inside a giant Aqua Bubble. Sports lovers won’t have to miss any of the games over the course of the weekend with TVs at the Sports Bar in Bartram Park. Also in Bartram Park, entertainment will feature country music on Friday, popular cover group the Molly Ringwalds headlining
on Saturday, and a laidback day of reggae on Sunday. For the third year, Florida Blue will be the Seafood Festival’s presenting sponsor, offering an array of activities and services of their own to attendees. “They’re going to bring in a chef to do cooking demonstrations between our Seafood Grille Shows, and they’ll have an urban garden again like last year, which was really cool,” Wilson says Florida Blue will also host the dining tents, lounge areas and offer health screenings, free massages and more. Festival hours are 11 am-11 pm Friday; 10 am-11 pm Saturday; and 11 am-5 pm Sunday. For more information visit fiestaoffiveflags.org.

But there are some tried and true pairings that will highlight what’s great about the flavors and textures in both the food and the accompanying beer. Here at DTC we know deciding what to eat is one of the toughest choices facing people today, so we’ve made this helpful chart from Dohm’s suggestions. Film by Josh Newby
In which we unfairly judge upcoming attractions based solely on their trailers.
Riddick
What I’ll be spending my $8 on: Don Jon In theaters: September 27 Starring: Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Scarlett Johansson, Julianne Moore What I got from the preview: JGL plays the title character, a New Jersey guy obsessed with conflicting interests ranging from church to Internet pornography. When he meets Johansson’s character, who is equally obsessed with romantic comedies, the two’s differing views on life—shaped by their preferred methods of entertainment—create tension in their relationship. Most notable for: With an affinity for greased back haircuts, Jersey accents, and objectification of everything, this marks JGL’s first effort at writing and directing his own film. Unqualified critical observation: You gotta hand it to that 3rd Rock From the Sun kid, not only does he have no qualms with shedding his good-boy image to play a sex-obsessed greaser, but he cast Scarlett Johansson as his girlfriend. Genius move, Don Jon. On a more serious and less superficial note, this confident, edgy take on the dichotomy between men and women’s emotional outlooks on relationships and sex will hopefully be as telling as it is funny. And Scarlett Johansson’s in it.
26 Sept 2013 www.downtowncrowd.com
In theaters: September 6 Starring: Vin Diesel, Karl Urban, Katee Sackhoff What I got from the preview: Left for dead after a previous altercation with creatures who didn’t “see” the value in his night vision, Riddick is again in a fight for his life against an alien race of predators with whom he doesn’t see “eye to eye.” Maybe if he tried a bit of diplomacy, he wouldn’t have to kill so many people. Riddick “looks” like a nice guy. Most notable for: The third entry in this series supplies more of the same fantasy-horror-action made famous by its predecessors, and allows Vin Diesel to once again slip into the skin that made him a household name—and look awesome being bald. Unqualified critical observation: It seems “Riddickulous” that the Riddick movies and stories have attracted such a following and been deserving of so many reincarnations. I can say that because of my exhaustive knowledge of the series, based on a five-minute segment of Pitch Black I saw when I was 12 after sneaking into the theater. This late summer action movie should be enjoyable enough though, if only because of Vin Diesel and how indistinguishable he is from the aliens he is fighting.
Insidious Chapter 2
In theaters: September 13 Starring: Patrick Wilson, Rose Byrne What I got from the preview: That lovable, hardworking, demon-attracting family, the Lamberts, are left connected to the spirit world after the events of the first film, which if you recall involved a comatose child, a new house and a summertime stroll into hell. Most notable for: This sequel to the surprisingly good 2010 film continues the story and promises to add even more scares and product placement. The director, James Wan, has also been making a name for himself since this year’s very scary The Conjuring. Unqualified critical observation: Hollywood’s recent budget crisis has led to a deluge of cheaply produced but profitable horror films, as opposed to its usual preference for overproduced, big-budget flops (The Lone Ranger, Pacific Rim). In so doing, unfortunately, truly inventive scares are getting harder to come by. Chapter 2’s PG-13 rating doesn’t bode well for fans of the truly macabre, either.
Prisoners
In theaters: September 20 Starring: Hugh Jackman, Jake Gyllenhaal What I got from the preview: Between bouts of staring broodingly at grimy streets, a Boston man kidnaps the person he suspects is responsible for his daughter’s disappearance, which is a perfectly reasonable thing to do. This crime drama takes a gritty look at child abduction and the subsequent investigation process after a father takes justice into his own hands. Most notable for: Two acting heavyweights, Jackman and Gyllenhaal, spar off as depressed father and the detective charged with bringing his daughter back. Unqualified critical observation: While it likely won’t garner any Oscar noms, this Boston-based yarn of crime and punishment will likely serve as a nice transition between lighter, wide appeal summer offerings and heavier, more emotionally resonant awards-seeking fare of the fall and winter.
Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2
In theaters: September 27 Starring: Neil Patrick Harris, Bill Hader, Anna Faris What I got from the preview: The fanciful, foodbased tale of a smart but bumbling inventor continues when Flint discovers that his infamous creation is churning out food-animal hybrids, some of which are delightful heads of lettuce or peaceful tomatoes, but others of which are terrifying tacodiles and hippotatoes that are keen on wreaking havoc, and not just on digestive systems. Most notable for: With characters as colorful as the film’s palette, this sequel to the innocently entertaining film based on a children’s book takes the story to new heights and explores the dangers of innovation and what happens when the food eats you. Unqualified critical observation: Food puns and endearing characters highlight this story that might not be chock-full of lessons, but is certainly overflowing with charisma and simple charms. The first was as enjoyable as any animated movie about food falling from the sky could possibly be, and hopefully this sequel harnesses the magic once again.

Pot Roast &[ [· Pinot by Emily Lullo
THERE ARE SOME meals that are like a warm blanket of deliciousness, bathing us in their familiarity and heartiness and perhaps invoking a nostalgia for the home kitchen of our youth. Comfort foods are usually simple and direct but Pot Roast & Pinot—the newest restaurant to hit the cuisine scene Downtown—is taking these traditional favorites and adding a unique spin. The brainchild of chef and restaurateur Joe Abston and coowner Aimee Wilson, the concept for Pot Roast & Pinot came to be after the pair toured the space at 321 E. Cervantes formerly occupied by Seville Diner. The design and layout called for a diner, but with the Coffee Cup so close, Wilson and Abston decided to do something a little different. “We took what the building had, which is the diner influence, and decided to serve diner-like food, but elevate it,” Wilson says. “Joe’s background is as a chef so we thought it would be a playful take on American comfort food. The extensive wine list is brought to the diner via iPads, which allows them to tap, click and explore the offerings of approximately 30 by the glass and 200 bottles of wine, taking the guesswork out of ordering your vino. “You’ll be able to read tasting notes and a little bit of history about the vineyard or the winery that it came from, and you’re able to put your wine on what’s called a consideration list,” Wilson says. “You can put several in that area and then you can discuss it with your server or bartender when you’re ready to order.”

Meatloaf, mac and cheese and fried green tomatoes all get a refined treatment. Wilson says the meatloaf made with a mix of beef and pork with shiitake mushrooms and a pomegranate ketchup glaze and deviled eggs with butter-poached lobster knuckles and lemon confit are some of the most popular dishes, along with the restaurant’s namesake. “The idea of the menu is it should be dishes that you recognize that your grandma or parent cooked for you, but we’re just twisting one or

Another important part of the Pot Roast & Pinot repertoire is brunch. Decadent and unique takes on traditional brunch items include pumpkin cake pancakes with cream cheese frosting and French toast laced with pineapple pieces and juice. Brunch is no longer just a Sunday affair and late night breakfast cravings need not lead to a drive-through window. “A lot of people who are in the [service] industry don’t have an opportunity to go to brunch.
