commentary It’s said that time flies when you’re having fun. I agree with that but would also add “and when you are crazy busy!” That statement accurately reflects this last year and how, unbelievably, we are nearing the end of 2013. What a year it’s been! Near the end of 2012, our Board of Directors met and developed a plan containing our goals and objectives for 2013—a roadmap, if you will, for how we as a chamber could best serve our member businesses and our community as a whole. I’m happy to report that we’ve made significant progress on that plan thanks to the hard work that Josie, Sharon, Loraine, the Board of Directors, the Ambassadors, and all of the other volunteers who continue to contribute day in and day out. Our Education and Governmental Affairs committees teamed up and worked closely with the school district to help lobby critical education issues to our legislators. We, along with the other four area chambers, serve as active members on the Santa Rosa County Legislative Coalition, keeping our finger on the pulse and providing important input on issues that might affect our businesses. We’ve seen significant changes this year in regards to the economic development responsibilities within the county. Our Business Development committee has been involved every step of the way and plays an active role in the new structure. I can’t say enough about the job our Business Development committee did pulling The Gulf Breeze Business and Family Expo together this year. It was one of the most successful events we’ve seen as a chamber in recent years. Our membership growth is exceeding expectations and most importantly, the engagement we’re seeing from our members is on the rise. This engagement strengthens us as a chamber and enables us to increase the positive impact we can have on our community. As a long time chamber member who can directly correlate the success of my business to my involvement with the chamber, I encourage you to get engaged! There are so many different ways to get involved, and I assure you that the time you invest will manifest itself in multiple positive ways for your business. It has been my pleasure to serve as your Chairman of the Board for 2013. I want to thank everyone for their support and wish all of you success in the coming year. Dave Mungai Chairman of the Board of Directors Gulf Breeze Area Chamber of Commerce

I love this issue of the Gulf Breeze Magazine. It is like taking a drive on a Sunday afternoon. You take a look in the rearview mirror and note what is past and then look out the windshield to the road stretching out ahead. In this issue enjoy our year-in-review article that details what areas of Gulf Breeze have undergone change during 2013. Some of them are quite tangible, others verge on the ethereal. We also showcase the revived Tiger Point Golf Club and the growing impact of Pensacola State College – South Santa Rosa Center. And be sure to check out our list of all the great events coming up throughout the area for the festive, holiday season. You may even want to cut this page out so you don’t miss a thing. Christmas shopping is high on your priority list, I’m sure. To complete your gift list, please visit all the many wonderful stores and shops that we have in Gulf Breeze. Maybe your New Year’s resolutions include moving to a different house, developing a new product line or service in your company, getting a new pet, or changing something about your health or your body. Keep in mind that the Gulf Breeze Area Chamber has lots of local businesses that can help you do any of those things. Visiting the Business Directory on www.gulfbreezechamber.com is a great first step to keeping that resolution. Or give us a call at (850) 932-7888 and we will be glad to recommend a business to you. Beginning with Thanksgiving and moving right through the New Year, have a blessed holiday season. Serving you, Josie Cotti President/CEO Gulf Breeze Area Chamber 8

Santa Rosa County Safe Communities Designation Santa Rosa County, through the hard work of Daniel Hahn, SAFER Administrator for the County, is applying to be only the fourth county with a Safe Communities America designation from the National Safety Council. The other three counties are in New Mexico, Kentucky, and Pennsylvania. Santa Rosa County has already been recognized as one of the best places to live, ranking 10th out of 25 counties in a CNN report. Having a Safe Communities Designation will be beneficial for economic development, tourism, business, and community pride. The application process has taken almost 18 months and has included over a year of data collection of injuries in Santa Rosa County, a survey of programs in place that mitigate these injuries/issues, and the development of a 117 page application. In Dec. two evaluators will visit the County to make their on-site assessment of the information documented in the application. If you have questions or would like to be a part of this goal, contact Daniel Hahn at (850) 983-4606 or email danielh@santarosa.fl.gov. Resurfacing US 98/Gulf Breeze Parkway Florida’s Department of Transportation is wrapping up its resurfacing project from Navarre to the Gulf Breeze Zoo and is ready to begin the same process from the Zoo to the Pensacola Bay Bridge. All work is scheduled to be done from 7 pm to 7 am every day. Drivers should anticipate some lane closures along Highway 98 during these hours. Travelers on Highway 98 have not experienced a lot of issues while the initial phase of construction took place, so Gulf Breeze residents and businesses do not need to feel anxious about the current program. The goal of the project is to mill and resurface the roadway, widen existing shoulders, construct new bicycle lanes from Gondolier Blvd east to the Zoo entrance, and enhance safety by upgrading to American with Disabilities Act design standards and improving existing signage, pavement markings and signalized intersections. “The $11.4 million dollar project should be completed by the spring of 2015,” said Courtney Humbaugh, the local representative for ABCCommunications. ABC is handling all project information for FDOT. To keep up to date on the project, you can sign up for e-newsletters at info@US98gulfbreezeparkway.com. If you need more specific information, contact Stacey Wallace at (850) 228-2667 or swallace@abc-communications.net. You can also talk to Ian Satter with FDOT, (888) 6380250, Ext. 1205, or ian.satter@dot.state.fl.us.

I assist my clients in developing a comprehensive, custom-designed estate plan to meet their own individual needs that is centered around either a Will or a Living Trust. Each estate plan includes personal care documents to allow the client’s family to care for them or their property should they be unable to do so for themselves, setting out guidelines for family to follow so that their client’s wishes may be both known and followed. In addition, I assist family members through the court process, known as probate, when a loved one has passed away leaving assets needing to be transferred to their loved ones. I sit down with each client and answer all of their questions and discuss what needs to be done in their unique circumstance so the client is comfortable and knows what to expect of the probate process.

FSi Group is your total business solution. Their product offerings now consist of printing, promotional products, apparel, office supplies, office furniture, and break room/cleaning supplies. Whether you are looking for that perfect promotional product for an upcoming event or need to furnish a new office, Mike can assist you.

Personal Insights: 1. What do you enjoy most about your job? I enjoy helping my clients have the peace of mind that they have taken care of something they have often left undone too long. I enjoy getting to know each of my clients as the individuals that they are and their own unique families. I have met some really great people in my practice, and I really enjoy helping them. 2. Do you have any causes or organizations that you support or are actively involved in? I help out whenever I can around my church. I volunteered at my church’s VBS this year; I provide food for needy families, toys for children and stockings for soldiers. I also donated services for the church to auction off to raise funds for a mission trip and provided probono services for another member when it was brought to my attention he needed assistance. I also help out wherever I can in my oldest daughter’s classroom. I guess I just wait until something speaks to me and then jump in to help. 3. What is your favorite thing to do in the Pensacola Bay area? That’s hard because there are so many fun things to do, but I love going to the beach with my two girls and going to all of the wonderful festivals and parades. I’ve never lived in a place that seems to have something special going on every week. GB

Personal Insights: 1. What do you enjoy most about your job? The best part of my job is the networking. I enjoy meeting people and making new friends. It is also very rewarding to assist my clients with their unique product needs. We offer thousands of products, and it is a challenge to stay well-versed in all of them. It is a challenge I welcome. 2. Do you have any causes or organizations that you support or are actively involved in? My wife and I have been members of First Presbyterian Church for over 30 years. I am very involved in the church’s music program. I sing with the Sanctuary Choir and play guitar and sing with our Praise Team. I am also active in the Pensacola “Downtown” Rotary Club. Rotary supports many organizations both locally and internationally. I even get to ring the Salvation Army bell once a year in front of Walmart. My involvement with Business Networking International has been a major factor in growing my business. I truly value the friendships I have made through BNI. I just finished serving on the United Ministries Board of Directors. United Ministries is a Christian organization that provides temporary financial assistance to folks trying to pay their rent and keep their power on. I have been a supporter of this fine organization for years. Last, but not least, is my association with the Gulf Breeze Area Chamber. I try to attend as many Monthly Breakfasts and Business After Hours as possible. I stay active because it is good for business, and I have a great time. 3. What is your favorite thing to do in the Pensacola Bay area? That is a tough question. There is so much to experience in the two county area. Quality shows at the Saenger, outdoor festivals and Pensacola Beach immediately come to mind. However, I would have to say there is nothing quite like attending a Pensacola Blue Wahoos game at the new Maritime Park. Professional baseball overlooking Pensacola Bay, cold beer and a hot dog. What a winning combination!

City Successfully Takes Over Tiger Point Golf Club

T

The Panhandle of Florida is well known throughout the region for its white sand beaches and high quality of life, but also for its acres of sprawling fairways. The latter attribute is something that locals and visitors alike have come to love about this area, giving golfers plenty of variety in their outings from bucolic to seaside settings where a relaxing game can be enjoyed with friends, family or business partners.

Winter/2013/Gulf Breeze Magazine

In Gulf Breeze, the Tiger Point Golf Club offers just that and much more in its list of amenities which make it the perfect spot not only for a fun and challenging round of golf, but also a leisurely meal or a setting for weddings, meetings and other events. In the last year, the former owner of the course Meadowbrook was seeking a buyer to avoid having to close the facility entirely. “The City of Gulf Breeze realized that an opportunity existed relative to the necessary expansion of their waste water treatment facility, which is adjacent to Tiger Point’s West Course,” says Gulf Breeze Parks and Recreation director Ron Pulley. “With the purchase of Tiger Point Golf Club at $2.7 million, the City would own the land necessary to expand the existing treatment plant instead of having to purchase land elsewhere and construct a completely new treatment plant. The opportunity to expand the existing facility instead of having to relocate and build an entirely new facility saved the rate payers and the City an estimated $20 million.” The investment by the City has many benefits in addition to utilizing the space for the adjacent treatment plant. Without the buyer the golf course would have closed, leaving a large area of unused space and possibly negatively affecting the surrounding residential and business real estate market. The investment should also raise revenue for the City in the long run. In the year since the purchase the City has begun the lengthy renovation process, updating and repairing necessary areas to get the club and grounds in top condition. Among other projects, new fences have been installed along the northern perimeter of the golf courses, six holes of an 18 hole irrigation renovation project have been completed, seawalls on four holes have been repaired, a nursery green established, a maintenance building has been demolished and replaced, maintenance equipment has been replaced, repairs to the main clubhouse buildings have been initiated, the waterways that lie on 14 of the 18 total East Course holes have been cleaned, and construction has been approved on two new on course restroom facilities. “In short, we are well on our way to providing the most enjoyable golf experience in the region,” Pulley says.

Golfers or anyone looking for a tasty meal can enjoy the Tiger Point Golf Club’s restaurant the Sunset Grille. Chef Jesse Sproles joined the Tiger Point team in 2012 and has brought his Southern style and passion for food along with 10 years of culinary experience. Sunday brunch and daily lunch are available as well as a weekend dinner menu that includes succulent Gulf Coast-inspired items like a fresh catch or Southern paella. “The Sunset Grill offers the best lunch menu and value in the area. Jesse Sproles, our Food & Beverage director, has also put together a dinner menu available Thursday through Saturday that includes a prime rib that rivals the finest beef houses in Kansas City,” Pulley says. Additionally, Tiger Point can accommodate events ranging from less than ten to more than 400 people, offering a variety of venues within the facility like a board room for smaller corporate functions, a contemporary lounge, a covered outdoor terrace, a banquet hall and several outdoor options on the greens. Receptions, bridal parties or any other event can be hosted with stunning panoramic views of the Gulf providing gorgeous surrounding scenery. Looking ahead, Pulley says the golf club, under the direction of the City and mayor, is committed to being a contributing member of our community and is always welcoming community input going forward. Plans are in the works for the coming year to continue improving. “The most exciting opportunity in our immediate future is an upcoming workshop with City Council during which we will present our proposal for the renovation of the 18 hole West Course and the renovations to the Clubhouse,” he says. Nestled along the Santa Rosa Sound, the Tiger Point Golf Club is not only a beautiful setting for a round of golf, but also for a dinner out with friends or as the backdrop for any important event. More than that, it’s progressing as a sound investment for the City. With the many changes and improvements the facility has seen throughout 2013, the Tiger Point Golf Club is ripe for further growth and even more promise in 2014. GB

2013: A Look Back

By Josie Cotti

Business and Economic Development The main area of economic growth in 2013 was the resurgence of small businesses. All along Highway 98 in Gulf Breeze, strip malls began a renaissance as small businesses opened their doors or expanded their footprint. While some locations were recently vacated in 2012, many of them had been vacant for much longer, thus indicating an upward turn for the small entrepreneur. Two large chains also established a presence in the area. 2013 also saw the establishment of the Santa Rosa Business Coalition and Legislative Coalition. Each group was organized by all five chambers in Santa Rosa County with the goal of providing a louder, private voice for our business community in the economic development and government arenas respectively. As these two business-led organizations mature in 2014, local businesses should feel the benefit of their efforts.

Community Community takes on a whole new meaning in 2013 with the completion of the Gulf Breeze and Tiger Point Community Centers, as well as the City’s official takeover of Tiger Point Golf Club (see article on page 14). All three facilities are designed to provide large meeting spaces for private and business meetings and parties. Tiger Point Community Center will also be hosting County meetings for the Board of Commissioners and other committees so that south end residents of Santa Rosa County will have the opportunity to participate in their County government without having to drive to Milton. With these central cores for community organizations and residents to congregate comes the opportunity to draw neighborhoods together in ways that have not been available to Gulf Breeze residents, particularly the Tiger Point and Midway areas. It is a very positive, progressive development for all of us.

Transportation Transportation continues to be the talk of the town in 2013 and will be for years to come. Three major projects have made the headlines throughout the year. New lighting was installed along Highway 98. As the resurfacing project grinds through the next few years all along Highway 98, it is a blessing to local businesses and commuters that most of it will take place at night. Some businesses are concerned with the changes in access with the elimination of some turning areas, but overall the plans should facilitate better traffic flow and help pedestrians and bikers due to the new biking lane and wider shoulders. The looming topic will continue to be the impact of the Pensacola Bay Bridge replacement on flow of traffic and area businesses. The FDOT has yet to announce their final plans or their exact date for the start of the project.

With the Florida Department of Transportation hinting at using the west central alignment for the new Pensacola Bay Bridge, the City is having to take another look at its master plan. This alignment will mean loss of property for the businesses located at the foot of the bridge.

After four deaths in 2012, Santa Rosa County and Rep. Doug Broxson put their words into action with the FDOT and put in new streetlights along the dark stretches of Highway 98 through Tiger Point and Midway.

FDOT contractors start the actual resurfacing of Highway 98 east of the Gulf Breeze Zoo after spending most of the 2013 preparing shoulders, side road entrances, and turning lanes.

Resurfacing project will move on to the portion of Highway 98 west of the Zoo and through the City. “Road Work signs will be a fixture in the area through 2015.

Arts &Leisure The City of Gulf Breeze continues its mission to provide space for public art within the Gulf Breeze community. Each piece is located at a local park where they complement the natural beauty the City strives to maintain at all their facilities. In addition to Kevin Marchett's lighted aluminum sculpture at the foot of the Pensacola Bay Bridge, which wasunveiled in April 2013, two more pieces were completed in 2013. The City also completed a new stretch of sidewalk through the Shoreline Park South woods that connects to existing sidewalks throughout the City. The ultimate goal is develop a large circuit for running and walking that connects this path to a future one circling behind the Community Center’s ball fields. 1. A beautifully ornate, lit piece of art created by LouMitchell Courtney becomes a child’s play area at Woodlawn Park off of Fairpoint Avenue. The design cut into the steel is highlighted by two types of light throughout the night, giving the piece a functional value in the residential neighborhood as well. 2. Peter King and Xinia Marin’s ceramic flair is showcased in a stunning arch depicting the natural wonders of the area. It is located across from the Community Center on Shoreline Drive.

Final Thoughts from behind the President/CEO’s desk… For many Gulf Breeze business owners and residents, 2013 comes with a louder “cha-ching” than recent years. Many local businesses were pleased with a better year over 2012. Real estate agents sold more homes, area contractors had more construction bids to share, local businesses expanded their inventories and physical plant, and fewer restaurants closed their doors. It is always nice for some of my business members to have a bit more spring in their step. That said, it does make me consciously consider the sectors that are still slow. The banking and lending industry still stays tight, and insurance companies continue to deal with increased rates for property insurance and the whole health insurance snafu. Life is clearly a two-sided coin flipping up and down on its eternal journey through time. Sometimes you get “heads” and then you get “tails.” The areas to watch as we enter 2014 will be the final plans for the Pensacola Bay Bridge and the ensuing discussion that will need to take place concerning the economic stability of the area as we prepare for

22

Winter/2013/Gulf Breeze Magazine

the construction year. As a Chamber, we will also need to keep the pulse of our businesses as healthcare reform changes the landscape for real in 2014. We will also need to turn our focus to helping the Santa Rosa County School District stay solvent with Tallahassee constantly throwing unfunded mandates their way. Superintendent Wyrosdick has set up a strategic plan taskforce that is working to make proactive, constructive plans for the future. In Florida the buzz is “Jobs, Jobs, Jobs.” Bringing new jobs to our area will also be on the Chamber’s priority list. The Gulf Breeze Area Chamber hopes all its members have a prosperous new year. The staff and Board are honored to work on behalf of this community. Serving you, Josie Cotti President/CEO Gulf Breeze Area Chamber

PSC’s South Santa Rosa Center

PSC’s South Santa Rosa Center: A Workforce Asset

By Josh Newby

A

A new beacon of education and workforce development is impacting students and professionals in Santa Rosa County, gaining more positive momentum with each passing semester. A concept since 1999, Pensacola State College’s South Santa Rosa Center (SSRC), which opened in January 2012 after 18 months of construction, is located near the beautiful Nantahala Beach on Gulf Breeze Parkway. The new, $9 million facility is a two-story, multi-use building that includes ten state-of-the-art classrooms, two science laboratories, one computer lab and even an on-site library. With 35,000 square feet of space, the SSRC exists to meet the educational and workforce needs in Gulf Breeze and Navarre. Without the SSRC, the closest secondary education facility for those cities’ residents would be more than an hour away. By bringing a competent, quality collegiate experience to the region, the SSRC not only benefits local students desiring to expand their horizons, but also businesses that are hungry for a skilled, homegrown workforce. The facility’s rapid enrollment growth is evidence of its demand in the area. When the center first opened in 2012, less than 300 students were enrolled. Now, in fall 2013, 75 faculty members work with 768 students toward their college degrees, GEDs, or dual-enrollment qualifications. Traditional, online, day, evening and weekend classes are in place to ensure schedule flexibility and accessibility by all. “We offer general education courses ranging from math and English to the humanities,” said SSRC Director Michelle Horton. “We want to get students started on whatever path they ultimately choose. We have also begun offering certificate programs to meet workforce needs.” The SSRC recently started offering a Certified Nursing Assistant certificate to area medical students. Eleven have graduated thus far, and the certificate will continue to be offered on a rotating basis. Horton said that this program is the first of many programs tailored to

24

meet workforce needs. “The school has strong partnerships with area chambers of commerce and businesses,” said Horton. “We’re listening to their needs and making sure we offer programs that reflect those needs. Those partnerships are vital to our influence in the region and to students who are trusting us for a good, profitable education. The SSRC is a part of the pulse of this city, and we want to make sure we’re contributing to that pulse educationally and professionally.” The community response to the SSRC has been overwhelmingly positive, evidenced by the rapid enrollment growth, a deluge of positive media coverage, multiple business and chamber collaborations, and even enriching partnerships with local K-12 schools. Recently, the facility hosted a college fair for Gulf Breeze and Navarre high school students. Normally, the two high schools would host their own fairs, sometimes crowded in the cafeteria, but administrators from those institutions approached Horton with the idea to jointly present the event for community youth in the SSRC’s expansive space. Horton agreed, and the college fair was a huge success, with about 80 national educational representatives and more than 350 local students. The SSRC also hosted a job fair in September in partnership with Workforce EscaRosa that featured more than 150 area employers. The hope is that the SSRC will host similar events

several times a semester, further strengthening the bonds between high school and college education, and between college education and subsequent careers. The center’s idyllic location is also specifically curated to maximize learning while minimizing negative environmental impact. The building features the latest in environmentally conscious construction technology and earth-friendly building practices. The architectural firm of Bullock Tice Associates, Inc. and Greenhut Construction Another Full Co., Inc. adhered to Parking Lot Leadership in Energy and Environment Design standards, with a goal of LEED Gold Certification. Highly sustainable elements include high-efficiency mechanical systems, captured daylight, highvalue insulation, construction materials from recycled products, and wetlands preservation to enhance the natural surroundings. “We want to preserve the land we’re on and the wildlife that surrounds our Gulf Breeze location,” said Horton, noting that nearby ponds frequently attract ducks and other animals. “Maintaining the natural environment, not disturbing it, is one of our priorities. Our location is beautiful, and members of the community are welcome to come by anytime. This is the first building PSC has built in a while, so we wanted to make sure

we made it the best it could possibly be.” As students enter the SSRC, they are welcomed by cheerful colors and lots of natural light, lending a comforting aura to the otherwise demanding rigors of academia. “Education can be stressful enough by itself sometimes,” said Horton. “Learning new material and studying those concepts can be taxing. To contrast that, the SSRC is a calming environment. Students feel at ease with the layout and design of the building, as well. They are encouraged to engage with professors and other students and feel comfortable accessing all of our resources.” The entire SSRC facility is under one roof, giving the institution a sense of community and camaraderie, two traits that are important to any learning process. Central to the center’s goals are fostering an environment not only of education, but also of relationships and lifelong learning. Horton said that a part of Pensacola State College’s master plan is the expansion of the SSRC. With a projected enrollment of 1,000 at the center within the next academic year, that development may begin very soon.
