CHOOSE YOUR OWN ADVENTURE
DTCJuly2014
Sitting alone in your room, resenting the idea that there’s nothing to do, the spirit of Tristan de Luna appears to you as a vision. “Hola!” he says. “Since my untimely death in 1571, my spirit has been roaming about, seeking a scroll that was lost in a vicious hurricane. If you find this scroll for me, I will bestow upon you the lost treasure of Pensacola. You are the chosen one.” Intrigued, you take him up on this offer for the chance at some sweet 16th century treasure. “As a warning,” de Luna adds. “This journey will be fraught with difficulties, including pirates, trolls, and hipsters.” Where do you want to begin your quest for de Luna’s treasure? If the Historic District, turn to page 8. If the Palafox strip, turn to page 32. 8

Emily Lullo, editor I SOMETIMES HEAR people say that they often hear people say that there’s nothing to do in Pensacola. I think people stopped actually saying there’s nothing to do here when Downtown blatantly exploded with activity—live music, new events, markets, festivals, tons of bar and restaurant options—but people are still saying that people say there’s nothing to do, as if ghostly whispers of boredom are still echoing down Palafox across the intervening years when Downtown stopped being an actual ghost town. People on Palafox wouldn’t hear those time-traveling whispers anyway because they’re too busy shopping, eating at sidewalk café tables, heading to the next party spot, or possibly navigating the massive crowds that come down monthly for Gallery Night. I think we’re all pretty clear that there’s plenty to do here—too much to do in some cases. I, personally, often find myself running

Downtown for a singular errand—say, to grab some freshly baked English muffins from a baker at Palafox Market—and then ending up on a sprawling epic journey, faced with new discoveries, myriad dynamic characters and often unplanned day drinking. Next thing I know, my fiancé is texting me from home, “WHERE ARE THE ENGLISH MUFFINS?” along with assorted angry emojis. Hark, barkeep! I need to pay out for this bloody Mary, for this journey has met its end, but there are plenty more where that one came from! Any day Downtown is a veritable fountainhead of possibilities just waiting for you to come down and Choose Your Own Adventure! Whether you end up being foisted on the shoulders of a roving Mardi Gras krewe and paraded through the streets or simply enjoying a delightful iced chai in the park while poring over this copy of DTC is up to you and the choices ahead. And there are plenty of possibilities and choices to be made this month. Will you gather the courage to go in for a kiss with your longtime crush under the tinted glow of fireworks at the Sertoma Fourth of July celebration? Will you be hospitalized after being brutally assaulted and run over by roller skating bulls at Seville Quarter’s Running of the Bulls? Will you finally learn that comfortable shoes are a must for July’s Gallery Night and not try to cram your size 9 wide feet into vintage heels for a night of walking all over Downtown? Well, will you?! There’s only one way to find out! DTC invites you to kick off your own customized Downtown Adventure, both in real life and on the following pages. Enjoy and Godspeed!

The patriotic celebration doesn’t end after the Fourth of July this month. Take a short trip across two bridges to Pensacola Beach to witness exhilarating stunts and heart-stopping maneuvers at the Pensacola Beach Air Show on July 10-12, starring Pensacola’s hometown heroes, the Blue Angels. After missing the performance last year, the Blues will return to perform their exhilarating stunts over the emerald waters of the Gulf, a flagship event for a pictureperfect summer weekend. On Thursday, July 10, the Blues will be over the beach at 2 pm for practice and again Friday, July 11, at 2 pm for a full-scale dress rehearsal to include civilian acts that begin at noon. On Saturday, July 12, the air show begins at noon,
with the Blues closing it out at 2 pm. Bring your beach chairs and a picnic and settle into the white sands early to beat traffic, which is sure to be busy for the weekend of events. Aircraft and teams participating in the Pensacola Beach Air Show include: Fat Albert, a C-130 Hercules that flies support for the Blue Angels; Prometheus flown by Skip Stewart; RV-8 flown by Team Aerodynamix); MX2 flown by Gary Ward; Grumman Widgeon G-44 flown by Julian MacQueen; and Boeing Stearman flown by Roy Kinsey. For the shows, the water will be cleared at noon and the entertainment will get underway. For more information, contact Robbie Schrock, SRIA Director of Administration, 932.2257.

Madelyn Mancera WITH THE MOTTO of “Sports… All sports, and nothing but sports!” you might think that the best part of New York Nick’s is the way you get to experience seeing your game on screen. But New York Nick’s food puts up a tough fight for customers’ attention against the many high-definition flat screens. When regulars and visitors alike enter the establishment, they are met with a variety of sports entertainment options. On the very slight chance that all the games, fights, and special sports events have all gone to commercial simultaneously, then people have the chance to appreciate indepth the hundreds of celebrity mementos that decorate the walls. The collectible items and appealing tokens of famous musicians almost mask all available wall space. In spite of Nick’s having all the features you would want in a sports bar, when your order comes out, everything else melts away and it is just you and the Deep Sea Supreme Sandwich you just ordered. The menu foretells that succulent shrimp will be topped with homemade creamy clam chowder, bacon and melted provolone cheese, and that it all sits on top of a perfectly toasted garlic loaf. The experience is similar with all their items because each is handcrafted from homemade recipes. They take pride in even the smallest details of each plate. The breading they use is from homemade Italian bread, and the marinara sauce that some dishes feature is made completely from scratch. To top it off, every dedicated dessert-lover will appreciate New York Nick’s fresh cheese cake and pie. Owner Nick Zangari is a New York native and sports fan extraordinaire. He opened in 2003 and explains how “the first year was nuts! We opened the same weekend that my hometown won the national basketball championship. Between

that, changes in professional regulations, and then Hurricane Ivan, New York Nick’s turned into a full-on sports bar.” Originally NYN’s was even more music-centered than it is now, but they are bringing more of that aspect back. They recently added a radio booth inside the restaurant that streams worldwide on Radio Free Pensacola. Zangari, who used to be a DJ, bartended on the beach for 20 years before opening on Palafox; New York Nick’s is a compilation of his former work projects and hometown flavors. In 2003, Downtown Pensacola was not the lively center it is now. There were very few others catering to the smaller public’s sports bar needs. Zangari was taking a chance on Downtown’s growth, but his instinct told him “the timing was right.” His instincts were based on the surge of inner-city expansion across the country. The decision to open turned out well and has resulted in New York Nick’s being one of the root bars of Downtown. It has won awards for #1 Sports Bar of Pensacola, and it has been recognized for Best Wings and Best Fries. During July, NYN’s hopes to see a good crowd for the World Cup’s final two weeks and they are promoting a WWW special: Wednesday’s $5 wings and whackers (bushwhackers). In addition to award-winning wings, you can try the Best Damn Wrap Period, New York Nick’s Already Famous Meatball Sandwich, or Meatballs & Macaroni made from an original and untouched recipe from Italy. The sauce and ground pork meat balls which are made from scratch accompany imported cavetelli, but keep in mind that if you order mid-game, you will miss at least 15 minutes due to your very attention-stealing plate.

FOURTH OF JULY SERTOMA CELEBRATION THE FOURTH OF July isn’t just about celebrating our nation’s independence; it’s about cookouts, friends, family and most importantly fireworks! For the past 24 years, the Sertoma (Service to Mankind) Fourth of July Fireworks have been going strong. And the 25th year will be even better. It is the largest fireworks display on the Gulf Coast. Sertoma was founded in 1912 and their goal is to spread patriotism and awareness about speech and hearing. According to Gena Hernandez, the chairman for Sertoma’s Fourth of July Celebration, the Pensacola division has about 10 members who have been working together and getting the Fourth of July celebration ready since January. The whole day is set for celebrations, which start in Seville Square. At 11 am the fun for the kids starts with arts and craft vendors, a bounce house, petting zoo, and a rock climbing wall. At 1 pm kids will be able to get their face painted and pony rides will be available. At 4 pm the concert starts with an opening act and Cross Town Band between Fountain Park and Seville Square. A little before 9 pm the National Anthem will start and the fireworks display will begin over Pensacola Bay. It is definitely packed out there, so the earlier you get there, the better off you will be. Don’t forget to bring blankets and lawn chairs! To top it off, the fireworks are synchronized to music provided by Cat Country, so while the sky is lighting up with a thousand of different colors, music will play to make the experience that much better. Hernandez estimates about 20,000 people attend each year. Don’t be one of the ones who miss it! For more information visit pensacolafireworks.com.
FOURTH OF JULY PLAYLIST “Firework” by Katy Perry, because fireworks. “American Girl” by Tom Petty, for its mildly patriotic undertones and singability. “Crazy in Love” by Beyonce, because you’re crazy in love with America. “Small Town” by John “The Coug” Mellencamp, because Pensacola is a decadent slice of small-town American pie. “Born in the U.S.A.” by Bruce Springsteen, because even though it’s not at all patriotic, it has the term “U.S.A.” “Work”* by Iggy Azalea, because it’s awesome. “Boys of Summer” by Don Henley, because of the idealized take on sweltering summer misery. “Party in the U.S.A.” by Miley Cyrus, because Miley represents all that is pure and good about this great country. “Color Me America” by Dolly Parton, because, while we’ve never heard it, the title sounds quite American. *This song, while amazing, is only for the adult listeners out there.
In 2011, modern hero Takeru Kobayashi ate 69 hot dogs, a world record. Kobayashi trains by eating large quantities A PATRIOT’S GUIDE TO of food to keep his stomach large, but exercises to ensure fat will not impede stomach expansion. He also famously wiggles his body to force food through his esophagus, a description that makes us never want to eat hot dogs again. Currently, about 50,000 people attend the iconic Nathan’s event on Coney Island, and the 20 top eaters from around the world compete. Winners have been fairly evenly split between Americans and Japanese since the competition’s inception. This popular case study on American excess is now even broadcast on ESPN. You may not be ready or willing to take on the big guns HOT DOG EATING of competitive hot dog eating, but hopefully these facts will CONTESTS inspire an impressive friendly competition this Fourth. The official Pensacola competition begins in Seville Square at noon.

HEAD HUNTERS
by Karianne Payton
HEAD HUNTERS IS much-admired for working towards beautifying Pensacola for 35 years. Jeff Hunt opened his Baylen Street location on Halloween in 1978 with just a small team of three. Now he and Ellen Hunt have an expanded staff that offer a wide variety of services for hair, nails, tanning, complete body waxing, massage therapy, and electrology. Ellen Hunt is the salon’s licensed Electrologist, which is a professional certified in eliminating hair follicles by use of electricity. Ellen explains that electrolysis is the most permanent type of hair removal, “unlike laser hair removal, electrolysis targets and eliminates each individual follicle at a time. It’s more time consuming, but it’s truly permanent.”
In order to Pensacola these hairstyles, Head Hunters uses and sells a wide range of products. They carry Paul Mitchell, Redkin, Kendra products, and Purology products. Jeff personally assures that “if clients want something else, we will try to get it for them. We don’t like being a one-side dedicated salon because it narrows your horizons. Paul Mitchel, for instance, has a lot of aromas and some people are just not into complex aromas.” Head Hunters strives to have products on hand for every person’s individual tastes. The tanning center in Head Hunters proudly uses Supre and Synergytan. “We like those because they are really great quality products and they are not over-the-top pricewise,” says Ellen. “Some places have $50 products just for tanning. And those products expire MONDAY - FRIDAY: 8:30 AM - 6 PM prematurely. Supre and Synergytan are fairly priced and good for customers, and SATURDAY: 9 AM - 2 PM they have an adequate shelf life,” adds 205 S. BAYLEN ST. Jeff. They have colorists and stylists that 433.3308 are dedicated to giving you the exact shade of electric blue you might be after, Hair removal services are the most but as professionals, they might recommend popular amenity during the summer, and Jeff something a bit more subtle. Perhaps softer Hunt reveals that everyone is coming in for pastel-blue streaks that slowly fade into your Brazilians specifically. As for the big summer natural color (an actual top 2014 style). Head hair style, the cut requested the most is “layers, lots and lots of long layers,” says Jeff. Hunters has more than nine service rooms and Ever since Head Hunters was established, their more than enough space to do wedding parties. They cater to every nail, wax, and up-do need goal has been to give people the looks they of wedding parties. Ellen says they don’t just want. This season’s trends include faux fringe, specialize in formal up-dos. “We do a number which is a thick, jagged layer of eye-skimming of things to decorate hair,” she says. “We bangs; the sideswept wedge which features fashion beads or feathers into locks, and put deep bangs and chin-length tapered layers together casual up-dos and styles.” that softly frame the face; and the ‘A’ line cut, which is the short cut that is longer in the front than in the back. downtowncrowd.com

FUNDRAISING EVENT FOR GULF COAST KID’S HOUSE
RUNNING OF THE BULLS BY EMILY LULLO + JOSH NEWBY
FIESTA DE SAN FERMIN
COUCH TO BULL RUN TRAINING PLAN
SEVILLE QUARTER WILL once again host its Fiesta de San Fermin, a celebration of the area’s Spanish heritage that offers a unique twist to the usual festive fun you’ve come to expect from the complex. Taking place over three days from July 17 to July 19, the fun will feature a Spanish-style feast on Thursday, July 17, and a “chupinazo,” or opening celebration during the July 18 Gallery Night. On Saturday, July 19 the headlining event, the Running of the Bulls, will make both organized runs and Pensacola’s Spanish history more engaging to all involved. The celebrations are modeled after those held in Pamplona, Spain, for whom Saint Fermin is the patron saint. The kickoff wine pairing dinner by chef Brandon Melton will take place in Apple Annie’s Courtyard and is limited to 80 ticketed guests. On Friday night, Gallery Night attendees will see a procession featuring the Krewe of Andres de Pez honoring San Fermin as they march through the streets. Saturday morning, runners and spectators can get a front row seat to Pensacola’s very own encierro, or Running of the Bulls. This reenactment of the iconic Spanish bull run is safer than the real thing— but only slightly. The bulls are played by local roller derby participants, complete with elaborately horned helmets and whiffle bats as the weapon of choice. At 10 am runners clad in white with red kerchiefs will take to the streets and shortly after, the bulls will be released, taking down any and all in their path of destruction. Following the race, runners, bulls and spectators alike can partake in a party outside the complex where awards will be given for a variety of categories like best group costume and best bull horns. Registration is $15 until July 10. Late registration and shirt pick-up will be on Friday, July 18 from 4 to 7 pm. Day-of registration will be Saturday, July 19 from 8 to 9:30 am. Runners can register in the Seville Quarter Wine Shop or online at sevillequarter.com.
FOR THIS EPIC chase through the streets of Downtown with mighty derby players closing in, whiffle bats in hand, training is a must. The C2BR plan will prepare your body and mind for the perils ahead. You have 19 days to ready yourself for the encierro. Unless you’re only picking up this publication mid-month, in which case you should simply cram these steps into a few days. If you’re reading this after July 19, you have two options: time travel to the beginning of July, or stretch it into a year-long program for Running of the Bulls 2015. Either way, you have a long road ahead, but contrary to what your disappointed parents may tell you, you can do it!
CHOOSE YOUR OWN ADVENTURE
Week 1: Day 1: Get off the couch. Don’t worry; you can return to it later. Days 2-5: Acquire running apparel and wear everywhere. Days 6-7: You should probably begin running now. Run a mile or so, or whatever you feel like. Post running accomplishment to Facebook, feel superior to friends, sit back as the likes pour in. Week 2: Day 1: Realize you have plenty of time and take a day off. Day 2: Go for another run; but like, a really good one. Congratulate yourself with a post-run, slow-motion water dousing. Day 3: It dawns on you that you can’t wear your expensive running apparel to the Running of the Bulls and you purchase the regulation white T-shirt and red bandana. Practice different bandana-tying techniques until perfect look is achieved. This is crucial. Day 4: Punch some frozen meat, work up disgusting sweat, grill now tenderized meat for protein-packed dinner bonanza. Day 5: Energized from last night’s meat bonanza, go on an overly ambitious run, quitting halfway through to walk home, defeated, bringing shame to your father’s house. Days 6-7: Defeated, hate yourself further by binge watching reality TV. Week 3: Day 1: You cast off the chains of depression and rise from your bed like a phoenix from the ashes. Recruit a friend or mortal enemy to chase after you with a bat to finetune your dipping/ducking/dodging technique. Day 2: Go for a spectacular run, feeling energized and complete throughout. With bold charisma, you gallop through hordes of playing children. You catch a sailing frisbee, jump through a hopscotch game, and high-five waves of admiring youth. You think about starting your own running blog. Days 3-4: You have a false sense of confidence. The run is just three days away, but you got this. Day 5: This is it. The day before the big run. You head outside, combining all the many skills you’ve acquired over the past three weeks of training, eating, and watching TV. Triumphant, you run up the stairs of Artel, taking two at a time before turning around to greet your stomping grounds with a waving fist of victory. Onlookers are perplexed yet impressed. You are their god.
You and Reginald the squire/bartender arrive at Running of the Bulls and behold the majesty and fanfare of the acclaimed sport. Right as the cannons go off to begin the race, you see the pirate at the head of the crowd. You begin running with the other contestants, dodging bulls and gaining on the pirate. A bull is about to gore you, but faithful Reginald takes the brunt of it. “Go!” screams Reginald. “Get the pirate and finish your quest!” Crying, you respond, “You’ve served me well, Reginald.” To stay with Reginald, turn to page 4. CRAB CAKE COOK-OFF BY JOSH NEWBY
THE ARC GATEWAY Crab Cake Cook-off, one of Pensacola’s most iconic and well-attended fundraisers of the year, is right around the corner. Guests are given the chance to sample world-class crab cakes, sip wine while surveying the silent auction, purchase local art made by Arc Gateway’s very own clients, and have a laid-back, family-friendly time with other members of the community. The event, which has been a successful local fundraiser for almost a decade now, is returning with those signature, delicious quarter-sized treats on July 9 at Seville Quarter, which hosts and sponsors the fun. Tickets are $60 per person. Started in the 1950s, Arc Gateway is a non-profit organization that serves children who have or are at risk of developmental disabilities, as well as adults
with developmental disabilities. They began the crab cake fundraiser as a way to increase awareness of their services to the community. What began as an annual get-together attended by about 50 people has grown to become a quickly sold-out event of 300 individuals. “We see it as both a friend- and fund-raiser,” said Megan McLemore, who facilitates the event. “It’s always a great time. I think one of the reasons this event is so successful is because the atmosphere is great and casual, and everyone is very relaxed. Plus, you can literally eat all the crab cakes you want.” That’s not an understatement. With 20 local chefs—from places like Peg Leg Pete’s, Tiger Point Golf Club, Seville Quarter and more—making about 300 crab cakes each, there is plenty to go around
for the estimated 300 guests in attendance. Like McLemore said, the event is always quite successful, and that’s no understatement, either. Last year, Arc Gateway helped more than 900 individuals in the community with developmental disabilities. Beyond the food and drink is a great opportunity to score some truly unique art made by Arc’s clients. The artists receive 50 percent of the art sale, and the other 50 percent goes back into funding the program. One hundred percent of the proceeds from the event goes to Arc Gateway programs. To snatch up tickets before they’re gone, call 434.2638 or email meganm@arc-gateway.org.

must-reads
EMILY LULLO REVIEWS THE ONLY BOOKS YOU NEED TO READ THIS SUMMER Summer is the perfect time to catch up on that hefty reading list you’ve accumulated over the action-packed winter, spring and fall. Unless you work a normal, non-teacher job in which case it’s exactly like the rest of the year, except perhaps more weekend time at the beach with a book in your lap. But why drive all the way out to the beach when you can pop into a cozy café, settle onto a shady park bench or duck inside the beautiful and air-conditioned main branch of the West Florida Public Library, all conveniently located in charming Downtown Pensacola? Impress your friends by having a response to the age-old question, “Read any good books lately?” Here are a few reasonably contemporary book picks to start you on your journey to better-readness, chosen seemingly at random from my own recently-read list.
SEMI-SELF HELPFUL NONFICTION THE POWER OF HABIT BY CHARLES DUHIGG
NONFICTION THAT READS LIKE AN SVU THRILLER THE POISONER’S HANDBOOK BY DEBORAH BLUM
This super-readable nonfiction gives a fascinating look into the very structure of your everyday life: habits. With insight into individual, organizational and societal habit creation and reformation, it offers both the why and an outline of the how when it comes to habits. Case studies in successful as well as disastrous habits on large and small scales keep things narrative and there are even some helpful pictures to lighten up the text. Read this and get a handle on all of your bad habits once and for all, or at least the psychology and neuroscience that will allow you to justify never improving yourself for all your days.
Set in jazz age New York, The Poisoner’s Handbook relays the advent of forensic medicine, which seems dull until you realize it was basically conceived and tweaked through delving into grisly deaths that wreaked New York City through the 1920s. Between government-poisoned hooch, lovers poisoning each other for insurance payouts, and a tenacious medical examiner’s office working tirelessly to get forensic research recognized in courtrooms and coroner’s offices, there’s more true crime than chem lab. It’s Breaking Bad meets Boardwalk Empire. Plus, the title will make it seem like you’re up to no good.

ADULT NOVEL THAT WILL MAKE YOU FEEL SMARTER LIFE AFTER LIFE BY KATE ATKINSON This award-winning novel focuses on a seemingly humdrum girl born in 1910 to a well-off British family, and the various alternating possibilities her life takes leading through WWII. Its unique structure of looping back through her timelines is best enjoyed after reading straight through the first 100 pages to acclimate to the cadence of the narrative, which can seem confusing at first, but persevere, readers, and be rewarded with an impossible-to-put-down tale with an explosive finish. Fans of multiverse theory and alternative timelines will rejoice at Life After Life.
REE F E L LITT ARIES LIBR
Even more obscure than regular libraries, Little Free Libraries are part of a global movement to increase literacy and build community by establishing miniature libraries where anyone can give, take, or leave books. These whimsical book huts are taking off in Pensacola, with more than 20 open or in progress. For more information visit littlefreelibrary.org or facebook.com/ pensacolaslittlefreelibraries.
Right now, the Downtown Library offers a dose of visual art in addition to literature. Artel Gallery and the Cinco Banderas Committee have loaned a portion of the prestigious Cinco Banderas Collection to the library, the installation of which will be complete July 11 when a reception will be held from 5 to 7 pm. The Cinco Banderas Collection is a unique and permanent body of work consisting exclusively of regionally produced art and the loan was made possible by the generosity of the Friends of the Library and West Florida Pensacola Library.

YA CHARMER/SUPER FAST READ ELEANOR & PARK BY RAINBOW ROWELL You’ll fall in love with this heartrending YA soonto-be classic about a pair of high school outcasts who bond over comic books and music in the back of the bus. Set in the pre-digital age, this story is more than a teenage romp—so much more!—exploring class, race, bullying and the bounds of my emotional range, and leaving its readers, like Eleanor & Park themselves, desperately wanting more time together with this pair.

Deliver Us from Evil
What I’ll be spending my $8 on:
Earth to Echo
In theaters: July 2 Starring: Teo Halm, Reese Hartwig, Ella Wahlestedt What I got from the preview: A trio of obviously narcissistic kids decides to film their life after they begin receiving encrypted messages via a variety of mediums. These messages lead them to Echo, a levitating alien who guides them on an adventure that they would rather experience through their camera’s lens, instead of just living in the moment. Think those annoying people who film concerts. Most notable for: Big-budget, live-action, original tween movies are hard to come by, with the most recent one I can think of being Super 8, a similarly 80s-style sci-fi movie that I loved. Unqualified critical observation: Movies like this are either incredible (E.T., Super 8) or laughably forgettable (Mac and Me). I’m holding out hope for the former. With a summer full of super heroes and raunchy comedies, it’s a welcome break to view cutting-edge special effects and new ideas through a child’s eyes, as opposed to the laid-back indifference indicative of so many adult sci-fi characters.
In theaters: July 2 Starring: Eric Bana, Edgar Ramirez, Olivia Munn What I got from the preview: A New York police officer gets called to the scene of a crime, where he discovers a woman with some unusual symptoms, like behaving as though possessed by the devil himself. No big deal, though, because Eric Bana is on the case. He’s not very good at the case, though, since the possession/infection soon spreads to others in the city, including his daughter. Oh, Eric. Most notable for: The talented team responsible for this great wave of horror we seem to be riding (Sinister, Oculus, Paranormal Activity, The Conjuring) is back to tackle this supposedly true story. Artistic license like this hasn’t been taking since Avatar remade FernGully. Unqualified critical observation: I have hope for this movie. It looks gritty, disturbing, and literally scary as hell. However, there also seems to be an over-reliance on the same cheap horror tricks that this filmmaking team set themselves apart by avoiding. Personally, I think this may be the beginning of the end for the horror genre’s recent successful reemergence.
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
In theaters: July 11 Starring: Gary Oldman, Keri Russell, Andy Serkis What I got from the preview: Ten years after the events of Rise of the Planet of the Apes (you know, the movie where monkeys abuse drugs meant for humans and become super smart), apes have effectively taken over the world, or maybe just northern California. It’s hard to tell. Anyway, a few remaining humans struggle to forge a fragile peace with monkeys. I understand the clever commentary on our evolution as a species, but couldn’t they pick an animal whose most menacing characteristic isn’t flinging poop? Most notable for: Honestly, the most notable thing about this movie is that the obviously silly idea behind this franchise has endured so long. It’s like those monkeys who just won’t die. Unqualified critical observation: The first one was surprisingly dramatic and stretched the limits of my suspended disbelief both about monkeys’ ability to wield automatic weaponry and James Franco’s ability to act. This one promises to go even further.
Sex Tape
In theaters: July 18 Starring: Cameron Diaz, Jason Segel, Rob Lowe, Rob Corddry, Ellie Kemper What I got from the preview: A youngish couple trapped in a passionless marriage makes the unwise decision to film their next bout of, um, blissful congress, revealing both members’ insecurities, doubts, and nihilism to the other. If that seems like an unlikely summer movie, you’re right! The two’s movie gets uploaded to the mysterious “cloud” and shared with everyone they know, including their mailman! Haha! Mailmen still exist in this movie! Most notable for: It’s a venerable cast and a relevant idea and comes on the heels of countless other summer raunch-fests. Unqualified critical observation: Like I said, the cast is really great, too great for this juvenile foray into the lives of clueless, witless adults who make mistakes that ninthgraders could easily avoid.
Hercules
In theaters: July 25 Starring: Dwayne Johnson, John Hurt, Irina Shayk What I got from the preview: The demigod son of Zeus must join with other attractive immortals to comprise the greatest army ever built, charged with destroying a tyrannical warlord. Expect lots of slow-motion fighting sequences, huge CG armies, pop-philosophy dialogue, and unintentionally homoerotic flexing. Most notable for: Dwayne Johnson is whom I always pictured as Hercules in mythology class, so I’m glad they took that into consideration when casting this movie. Unqualified critical observation: A wise man once said that it’s not what a movie is about, it’s how it’s about. That wise man is now dead, but basically there’s a right way to do a big, dumb movie, and there’s a wrong way. This year’s earlier Hercules contestant, The Legend of Hercules, was the wrong way. I think this movie gets it right. A bearded Dwayne Johnson is a pretty glorious site, as well.

CHOOSE YOUR OWN ADVENTURE
You arrive on the Palafox strip and enter Hopjacks. After searching the nooks and crannies of the famous establishment for any clues, you settle down for a drink and begin telling the bartender your tale of woe. “I received a cryptic message from Tristan de Luna, who promised me treasures in exchange for finding his lost scroll.” Intrigued, the bartender informs you that just a few days ago, he saw a French pirate with a golden scroll strapped to his belt, but he didn’t think of anything of it. “Do you know where he went?” you ask. The bartender says that he overheard the pirate talking about bar-hopping. “Perhaps I can be of service on your quest as your squire. I’m a great squire,” says the bartender. Excited, you consider your bar options. To go to Running of the Bulls at Seville, turn to page 13. To go to New York Nick’s turn to page 29.
