AFTER EXPERIENCING WHAT seemed like an actual spring for the first time in recent memory, Pensacola must now bow down at the mercy of the summer heat. I, for one, welcome our climatic overlords, and I bid you to do the same. No longer shall we be slaves to the Walgreens cosmetics aisle, wasting precious Balance Rewards points on fruitless searches for a sweat resistant matte foundation. No more shall we cower indoors from the giant sauna that engulfs our city for eight months out of the year. This month, we venture outside. This month we’re highlighting some of the best ways to get outside and actively explore Downtown, whether it’s by foot or bike, fast or leisurely. Some of my favorite running routes wind toward Downtown along the bayfront, where a sunrise over the

water will always remind me to appreciate the natural splendor that surrounds me. As a bicycle commuter and a person known as “Bike Girl” by people in my office building (which I allow on account of the superhero sounding name), I appreciate efforts to increase the presence of cycling in Downtown Pensacola and to creatively incorporate bike-friendly additions to infrastructure. Find out about the new and learn more about the great routes you can either walk, run, or bike starting on page 9. Other opportunities to slay fears of the rising temperatures with uniquely Pensacola style include the Historic Pensacola Village annual Open House, held June 7. For those that haven’t visited this area in a while, it’s the perfect way to get reacquainted with the rich history that many locals can sometimes take for granted. June also brings the longest day of the year, but don’t worry! We’ve got the perfect plan to get the most out of all those hours on page 25. There’s way too much going on to stay in the AC for fear of melty makeup and pit stains. Picnics in Seville Square, baseball games, bike rides, running clubs, farmers markets and so much more await the summer warrior inside you. In this mission to reclaim the streets from which visibly undulating waves of heat are rising, we must protect ourselves with all the necessary armaments: lots of water, sunscreen and, of course, a camera to capture all the sweaty adventures.

Downtown Improvement Board The conversation and interest around parking in Downtown continues. And it makes total sense, it is the first touch for most people to our Downtown and impacts their first experience. The DIB recently held several public meetings discussing possible improvements and operational enhancements to the parking system. Some items are a result of merchants asking for the DIB’s help. There are areas Downtown

where employees park in the free twohour restricted parking spaces moving their vehicles every two hours to avoid a parking ticket. This practice however is highly detrimental to Downtown businesses, filling up street parking – preventing customers wishing to stop and shop because they can’t find a place to park. The DIB is responding with both incentives and deterrents to encourage all day parking in areas Ron Butlin DIB Executive other than prime on-street Director

spaces. To that end the DIB will make monthly parking in any of the surface lots for Downtown employees starting at $25.00 per month. Then, the two-hour free parking on Palafox enforcement will be extended to Saturday’s and until 7 pm. The DIB will make some improvements to the surface lots and work on easier to understand signage directing visitors to the lots and garages. These changes will help to keep our Downtown retail vibrant and deliver a positive experience for Downtown guests.

MAINLINE

ART HOUSE BY EMILY LULLO

·

DOWNTOWN PENSACOLA IS already known as something of an arts and cultural bastion, and with the opening of Mainline Art House earlier this year that reputation is further solidified. The area’s first commercial art gallery opened in March, the first tenant in the Artisan, a recently renovated complex of retail and restaurant space on the east side of Palafox at Main Street. Owners Mikel and Jason Traffenstead are avid travelers and about a year ago the pair started toying with the idea of opening an art gallery that called to mind the commercial galleries they often saw while visiting other locales in Europe and throughout the states. They say they knew right away that they wanted a space in the heart of Downtown. “There are lots of places when you go up and down 30A and other places that try and capture the concept of the historical shopping area in downtown where everything’s within walking distance and there are parks and fountains and they’ve gone in and tried to recreate that concept,” Jason says. “Luckily enough for us Downtown Pensacola is that concept and it has been since the beginning.” The space at 422 S. Palafox embodies a modern and inviting feel that draws viewers to each area with various pieces that range from playful, poignant or a perfect home accent piece. From the light-filled front windows where handblown glass vessels catch the afternoon sun to sculptures that look like small, intricately wired zeppelins suspended between the bright red-

orange columns in the center of the room, to the hanging art positioned throughout the space, the work ranges in style but has in common its local origins. While Mikel says that in the future they plan to bring in regional or national artists for shorter run exhibitions, the resident artists will always be local. It’s that accessibility that allows viewers to interact with the artists who might be mingling at events or just hanging out at the gallery during regular hours. “It’s easy for people to see them and know them and it helps the artists to grow their name and their brand,” he says. “I like that local concept that you can come in at any time and the artist might be here.” Right now resident artists include Mikaela Sheldt, Thomas Birdwell, Ashton Howard, Joe Hobbs, Evan Levin and many others. Another focus of the gallery is housing original work that is fairly priced and accessible to those who may be wary of delving into art collecting. “We want people to know that before they go to a store to buy art that’s mass 422 S. Palafox St.

Tuesday-Saturday: 10 am - 7 pm Sunday: 11 am - 4 pm

produced they can come here and, for close to the same price and in some cases less, pick up an original piece that supports a local artist in our community and that sets you on that journey of starting to collect art,” Jason says. In addition to artwork, there are also handpicked vintage furniture pieces for sale, as well as a section devoted to unique stationery and gifts. There are also children’s games and items for the young future art lover. Don’t expect it to be the same each visit; things get shifted and repositioned into new configurations or vignettes on a weekly basis, making each visit a new experience.

WALK Downtown Pensacola is quickly becoming a bustling city center and with that status comes an influx of urban explorers that walk, run and roll through these historic streets. Plans are in motion and some have already been enacted for a variety of improvements and initiatives that further enhance and promote the active life in Downtown. Lace up your sneakers and pump up your tires, infrastructure adventurers. It’s time to hit the road and RUN, WALK, BIKE! By EMILY LULLO and JOSH NEWBY downtowncrowd.com June 2014

9

RUN ONE OF THE most efficient ways to burn calories and work up a serious sweat (and destroy my knees, according to all my non-jogger friends and relatives) is lacing up your sneakers and heading out for a run. Downtown is the perfect place to get some cardio while exploring the city, whether you enjoy dodging tourists along the more urban strips or clearing your head during a meditative 5K along Bayfront Parkway.

Pizza Fact

On average, a 150 pound person burns about 100-120 calories per mile, and a 200 pound person burns about 135-155 calories per mile. You’d likely have to run a little under three miles to work off the calories in one slice of depressingly plain cheese pizza (285).

Run This Town

Run With the Past

Start and end at Seville Square and crisscross the streets down to the gorgeous Plaza de Luna before doubling back through the Historic District in this leisurely two-mile jog.

Visitors looking to stay fit while vacationing along the Gulf Coast and the rare breed that excelled in both history class and P.E. will be delighted to try a new addition to the Emerald Coast Tours lineup of offerings: a historic running tour. Covering a leisurely 5K jog (at a bout of 11 minute miles or slower) with rest stops along the route that include historic landmarks that are discussed by a guide, the tour is $15 per person and is offered at 8 am Monday through Sunday in the summer. 10

June 2014 downtowncrowd.com

Is it beer that makes people want to run or does running just make people feel like they are inordinately deserving of a beer? Either way, there are several run clubs that offer the motivation of a group run along with the usual food or beer specials following the jog. Pensacola Bay Brewery Run Club – Meets Wednesday at 6 pm. Run at 6:30 pm. Three routes of varying lengths. Seville Quarter Milers – Meets Mondays at 5:30 pm. Run at 5:45 pm. Pasta and drink specials following at Fast Eddie’s. World of Beer Tap it & Run Club – Meets Wednesdays at 6 pm. 5K or 10K options. Sign in to get a free T-shirt after ten runs! The East Hill Yard – Meets Wednesdays at 6 pm. 5K with paleo dinner specials following.

Baby, You’re a Firecracker Want to start jogging but lack motivation? Register for a race so you have a built-in training timeframe with a concrete goal at the end. This patriotic 5K on Saturday, June 28 is the preamble to forthcoming Independence Day celebrations, and it benefits the Ronald McDonald House of Northwest Florida, which houses families of sick children who have to travel to Pensacola for medical treatment. Registration is $27 through June 27, and race day registration is available for procrastinators. Visit rmhc-nwfl.org for all the details.

WALK Wine Time The Palafox Wine Walk is an exclusive, one of a kind experience allowing guests to sample newly released wines from boutique vendors while strolling between some of the best shops on Palafox. The intimate gathering provides an opportunity for attendees to taste artfully crafted wines and learn about the regions and styles of winemaking. In addition to tasting the variety of select wines, guests will also have the opportunity to preorder wines to be delivered to their home or office at a discounted price. The Downtown Improvement Board hosts the Wine Walk quarterly.

NEW INITIATIVES TO make Downtown Pensacola more pedestrianfriendly are gaining traction. Events that encourage visitors and citizens alike to walk between businesses and enjoy our city’s amenities are far more frequent than even a few years ago. Expanded sidewalks, window displays and smart trafficking have made a stroll in Downtown the perfect lunch-hour pastime or date night plan.

Walk It Out The Pensacola Chamber of Commerce, a City Council committee, and the West Florida Regional Planning Council are just a few of the entities dedicated to making Pensacola’s disparate systems of sidewalks and nonvehicle transportation system more interconnected. Soon, individuals will be able to bike from Downtown to Cordova Mall as easily as they can walk from Garden St. to the waterfront. In addition to the economic benefits (businesses in walkable cities see about 20 percent more profit than businesses in non-walkable cities), the health benefits are nearly incalculable. Exercise, less CO2 emissions, and more time outside are just a few of the physical benefits to a pedestrian- and cyclist-friendly city.

Take A Hike Leave your car at the Maritime Park and go for this fun one-mile stroll through the heart of Downtown, where shops and restaurants are nestled among historic streets.

The Florida Trail Association facilitates frequent morning and evening walks for all ages across the state, and the local chapter has organized events in Escambia County several times a week. All walks are free and are generally between one and three miles. Check out meetup.com/ftawesterngate for more information.

BIKE PENSACOLA’S LIVELY, PICTURESQUE Downtown, shaded by historic buildings and adorned with brick sidewalks, is the perfect place for an early evening or weekend bike ride. The city’s epicenter features clubs, paths and racks, all meant to give adventurers a safe and fun experience as they take in the sights from two wheels.

Rack City Twenty bike racks have recently been installed in Downtown Pensacola along Palafox. The city purchased and installed them in order to create, according to Mayor Ashton Hayward, a more walkable and bikeable city. The initiative is aimed at improving citizens’ health, as well as the overall aesthetic and connectedness of the city.

Bicycle, Bicycle Start anywhere on this brisk two-mile course, which will take you along Bayfront Parkway, through Admiral Mason Park and into the Historic District.

Rentals: For The Bike-Curious While Pensacola doesn’t have a bikeshare program, Emerald Coast Tours’ Bicycle Rental option comes pretty close. Rent single-speed cruisers for just $10 (lock and helmet included), and coast around town, visiting Joe Patti’s Seafood for lunch, Admiral Mason Park for some history, the Maritime Park for the big game, or Plaza de Luna to watch the sunset.

The Bikes at Work project helps Downtown Pensacola businesses create a bicycle-sharing program for their employees. Think Beyond, located on Intendencia Street, provides free technical expertise in setting up the program, and offers publicity that helps increase positive exposure for participating businesses.

HISTORIC VILLAGE A PREVIEW OF THE OPEN HOUSE | By Madelyn Mancera

·

THE HISTORIC PENSACOLA Village Annual Open House falls on June 7 this year and as in previous years, the event will be a free family-fun filled day. For 2014, organizers are not hailing to a specific theme; instead, they will feature activities from their new Victorian Leisure Program. Attendees can expect to see performers dressed up and modeling Victorian forms of leisure. For parents who may be explaining the Victorian Era to their children for the first time, there are plenty of ways to clarify the differences between the technodigital age and the Victorian Era. A few comparisons that might help humor the young smartphone generation could be: before tablet games there was croquet, before Twilight there was Dracula, and before cartoons kids practiced propriety, read, or worked like minions, but not the crazy purple ones. In addition to badminton and croquet, Open House guests will witness plenty of nineteenth century pasttimes. Everyone can try candle dipping and decorate personal calling cards (the historic Pinterest?). There will be props you can use to take pictures with, which can be considered a Victorian equivalent to putting a filter on a photo. There will be guided tours of the Lavalle House, the Dorr House, the Old Christ Church, and the LearRocheblave House. Tour guides will start at 30-minute intervals between 10 am and noon, and then again from 1- 3 pm. Members of the staff enjoy seeing guests come back every year. “We have a blast! Our staff and

volunteers love what they do and love sharing it with the public,” said Kimberly McGraw. Children enjoy the hands-on junior activities, while adults enjoy tours the most. Open House regulars of all ages look forward to testing their skill, and mostly failing, at quoits; the fun pre-Candy Crush throwing game. Children have a chance to spot Climmie the Clown stirring up ruckus as well. If your coulrophobia makes you run off screaming in the opposite direction, then stay away from the Pensacola Children’s Museum where Climmie the Clown will be entertaining the children who find your fear amusing. Don’t feel too bad: Johnny Depp, Daniel Radcliffe, and Sean “Diddy” Combs are all freaked out by clowns too. You can also stroll through the T. T. Wentworth, Jr. Florida State Museum and attend a human library in the Faces of Guantanamo exhibit. The exhibit will be on the third floor. Everyone is free to travel into the Florida Public Archaeology Network, the Pensacola Archaeological Society, and the UWF Archaeology Network, who will hold a discussion of the Colonial Archaeological Trail. If you also happen to have an irrational fear of history and have coined a new phobia, something along the lines of Primeophobia or Victorophobia, then you should still come out and help Historic Pensacola Village keep Pensacola history alive. Billy Bob Thornton is allegedly afraid of antique furniture, so he will not be there, but most of Pensacola will!

MASH

Remember playing MASH on your down time in fourth grade? No? What? Were you homeschooled? This game of the cool kids foretold details of your future life — number of kids, job, spouse, where you’ll live, and of course, as the name dictates, the type of home you’ll have (Mansion, Apartment, Shack or House). The MASH game below will be an oracle not to your future life, but for your June Gallery Night experience. Give it a go and tell us what trials and tribulations this MASH says will befall you on Gallery Night. You can email results to emily@ballingerpublishing.com. I’ll either be at my desk receiving your emails or kicking back and enjoying my incredible new life as a janitor who lives in a house in Mobile with my husband, Jack Black. MASH – What’s for dinner? (The most important question of Gallery Night) Mimosas & fruit. Appletinis all night long!

MUSIC – To what sounds will you be awkwardly tapping your foot and swaying? Garage band of dubious preparedness and sobriety.

Steak & wine.

Genre-crossing superstar you would never admit to liking.

Hot dogs & beer.

Lone girl with acoustic guitar. Caught in a flash mob which you immediately join.

Someone who has been sent from the future to protect you.

DIRECTIONS Start by picking a number between one and ten. Starting with the items listed under the “MASH” category, count through the listed items down the categories until you get to your number, and cross off whichever listed item you land on. From that point, continue counting, rotating through the remaining listed items, crossing off the item each time the number lands on it. When there is only one item remaining in a given category, circle that item and it will be so, as it is foretold by the magical MASH game. Continue playing until you have one circled item in each category and this will give you a complete picture of your Gallery Night.

Fil m

In which we unfairly judge upcoming attractions based solely on their trailers.

by Josh Newby

What I’ll be spending my $8 on:

22 Jump Street

In theaters: June 13 Starring: Jonah Hill, Channing Tatum, Ice Cube, Nick Offerman, Rob Riggle What I got from the preview: After defeating the drug ring and larger criminal conspiracy from the previous movie, best friend cops Schmidt and Jenko are on a similar case again, this time at a local college. The preview promises just as much raucous humor, violence and bromance as the first movie. Most notable for: The first movie came out of nowhere and endeared audiences everywhere with its hip premise and more comedy than anyone expected. It’s the only movie I’ve seen twice in theatre since Like Mike, so that should tell you a lot about that movie and my life. The original cast and crew are back, with even more self-deprecating humor to boot. Unqualified critical observation: Each morning as the annoying birds outside my window sing me the song of their people at 5:45 am, I awaken and watch this trailer and get pumped for the day. This will be a great movie for couples, friends, and underage drug-dealers alike.

22

June 2014 downtowncrowd.com

The Fault in Our Stars

Jersey Boys

In theaters: June 6 Starring: Shailene Woodley, Ansel Elgort What I got from the preview: An oxygen tank-strapped, normal-looking teenage girl wanders through high school halls and attends cancer support groups, where she meets a fellow victim Augustus. The two fall into awkward teenage love, each wrestling with the fact that they could succumb to the disease any day and wreak lifelong emotional devastation on their partner/the audience. Most notable for: It’s not often that a smart, affecting, realistic young adult story comes along, but it’s a special treat when they do. John Green’s poignant tale of love and loss is transferred with expert talent to the big screen. Unqualified critical observation: If you’ve seen the trailer, your eyes have watered. Don’t try to pass it off as allergies or syphilis; do what I do and own it. I won’t spoil the ending, but just realize that the trailer is only 1/60 of the movie, and perhaps you can begin to understand the emotional wallop this will deliver.

In theaters: June 20 Starring: Christopher Walken, John Young, Vincent Piazza, Sean Whalen What I got from the preview: Four young men harmonize under a lone streetlight, constructing a recognizable tune that some say helped launch 60s rock. Their story has been told countless times in movies and on the stage, and the trailer makes it look like the best iteration is yet to come. Most notable for: Perhaps most notable, but strangely not widely advertised, is that Clint Eastwood directed this. He seems an odd choice, since he was last seen losing his mind at the 2012 Republican National Convention. Unqualified critical observation: This movie has a strange mix of things that will work (the story, the actors, the music) and things that might not (the direction, the odd studio decision to release in summer), but I’m holding out hope that this will remain as much a loved part of cinematic history as its subject matter is a part of music history.

How to Train Your Dragon 2

Transformers: Age of Extinction

In theaters: June 13 Starring: Jay Baruchel, Gerard Butler, Kristen Wiig, Jonah Hill What I got from the preview: My favorite fictional historical characters in quite a while finally return to the silver screen. It’s been four long, joyless years since the first installment, but Hiccup (who I strongly identify with and resemble) and Toothless (I have a kite named Night Fury, after Toothless’s breed) are back and soon they will cross a new land full of previously undiscovered dragons. The two must fight to protect these misunderstood creatures from those who wish to do them harm. Most notable for: Much like 21 Jump Street, this film’s first installment was supposed to just be a simple, everyday movie about two best friends. Its unusual candor, heart and humor took audiences by surprise, and the sequel is back to do the same. Unqualified critical observation: Do you really have to ask?

In theaters: June 27 Starring: Mark Wahlberg, Stanley Tucci, John Goodman, Nicola Peltz What I got from the preview: The preview begins with Mark Wahlberg flexing his muscles while working on a truck. Not sure how performing routine automobile maintenance causes such bulging biceps, but I’m definitely going to start changing my own oil. Anyway, the truck turns out to be an Autobot—or Decepticon; whichever one the good guys are. This of course heralds the return of the Transformers, and the end of Mark Wahlberg’s career. Most notable for: Michael Bay has recently owned up to his status as the AT&T of filmmakers. He makes movies for 13-year-old boys, and who are we to stop him? That he resurrected a franchise whose last two movies are among the worst ever made is quite impressive. Unqualified critical observation: You know, the very first Transformers was pretty good, if you just took it for what it was. The next one represented everything wrong with big-budget and sequel-driven Hollywood. I never saw the third one, because I heard it was even worse and could cause your brain to literally cease to function. Needless to say, I won’t be seeing this one either.
