9 Emily Echevarria, editor WHILE I DON’T currently have any kids of my own, I do plan to have one or two some day in the not-so-distant future, and in the meantime I’m at that age where many of my peers have little ones in tow or on the way. When my world was heavily insulated against any interaction with children both by my own choice and that of every reasonable parent around me, caring about what kids were into was the last thing on my mind. Once my sister birthed my nephew last year, the last nail in the coffin of Emily the Childhater was hammered solidly into place. Little Starlord (my incredible nickname for my baby nephew) is growing up in an amazing place to be a kid, and I am so excited about it! He’ll be toddling in the frothy waves of the Gulf, making fish prints in the kids areas at festivals, becoming a tiny STEM genius at the MESS Hall, where I will take him mostly so I myself can play with the exhibits. I’ve got big plans for my little man, and Downtown is an amazing place to make them.

With kids getting out of school for the summer and parents possibly losing their minds to the steady cadence of “I’m bored!” that I’m sure pipes out of all older children’s mouths when they look up briefly from their cell phones—wait, why does he have a cell phone already? Isn’t he a little young?? Just kidding! I’m not here to judge your parenting decisions; I’m here to give you some inspiration for fun stuff to do when heading Downtown with kids. Turn to page 9 for some kid-friendly June events and summery suggestions to get you and your littles through to August. Even the child averse among us can embrace their inner children and get in on the fun. In researching this issue, we enlisted the help of a child who once called me “Burrito Underpants” (yet another incredible nickname) to inspire us and offer valuable nuggets of insight which we’ve peppered throughout the issue. This edition will also introduce Downtown Pensacola’s newest museum experience, Voices of Pensacola, and give you some ideas for a perfect day of childlike glee on Sunday, June 21. It’s the longest day of the year, a day when every minute counts and all your hopes and dreams can come true—but only if you follow the whimsical schedule we’ve set out for you on page 19. We hope you’ll take advantage of the many opportunities for fun, frolicking, learning and playing alongside Kids in Downtown this month, whether you have a kid or two of your own to entertain, or you’re sending them off for an outing with their adoring aunt, or you have a child in your life that you mentor. Either way, take this solid advice from someone who sometimes goes by the name of Burrito Underpants: be safe, have fun, go play!

Downtown Improvement Board Let’s talk some facts about Gallery Night. Gallery Night began approximately 20 years ago with small groups of people coming Downtown to stroll among a few galleries and sip free wine. It was an attempt to give people a reason to come Downtown. Fast forward 20 years and Gallery Night has grown exponentially and morphed in content by public demand. Many of the art activities for Gallery Night occur between 5 to 9 pm; however, the streets remain closed until midnight for safety reasons. There are now between 10,000 and 15,000 people who attend Gallery Night. It is one of the few events that appeals to almost everyone and it is free to the public: young, old, parents, grandparents, empty nesters, married, single, rich and not so rich. A year and a half ago, Gallery Night became a monthly event which has only served to increase the number of people enjoying it. We like to say Downtown is everybody’s neighborhood and Gallery Night is proving that to be true. There is a definite sense of community that comes from Gallery Night. How is Gallery Night produced? The DIB

took responsibility for Gallery Night five years ago. Prior to that the City’s Community Redevelopment Agency group was responsible. Gallery Night is not an open “flea market.” The music and the vendors are selected by the DIB with an eye for arts, culture and culinary arts in the hopes of enhancing the experience for all. The funding for Gallery Night comes roughly 40 percent from the Downtown shops, restaurants and bars; 40 percent from sponsors such as Stella Artois and Yellow Cab; 5 percent from the fees paid by street vendors and the balance from the DIB. Contrary to popular belief, there is no City General Fund money used to fund Gallery Night. The items that make up the costs for Gallery Night are: Police security, EMT presence, bollard placement, trash pick-up, portable toilet rental, event insurance, no parking signs, posters and marketing expenses, traffic control cones and staff time to coordinate it all. The DIB asks that participating merchants and restaurants also provide something in the way of art or music. About half of the art and music that you see Ron Butlin, DIB Executive outside is a result of the participants organizing Director that particular activity.
Many people have wondered why the police cars are often parked near the bollard locations on the side streets. PPD needs to park their vehicles somewhere and parking near each closed side street provides them with quick access to their vehicles in the event of an emergency, it offers a chance to get cool/warm depending on the evening and helps with visibility of the street closure especially as more tourists are drawn to the event and might not be aware there are bollards in the street. It also allows PPD to observe what is transpiring off Palafox. The direct economic impact of Gallery Night on Downtown is meaningful, however the indirect impact is now likely exceeding it. The reputation of Gallery Night as a fun, safe opportunity to experience Downtown is now carrying over into the other days of the month. People have either experienced a Gallery Night or heard a friend talking about it and now when they are thinking about what to do, Downtown is a consideration. The DIB, City and County are working hard to preserve the wonderful tradition of Gallery Night and to keep it safe and fun for all.

{by Emily Echevarria}
Fans of the tango, foxtrot and cha-cha may know a lot about the fancy footwork, graceful spins and complex movements that make up the art of dance. But even those with two left feet can appreciate the talent and showmanship that goes into a great dance performance. This month, dance lovers of all persuasions can get in the groove at the Life’s a Dance benefit for Covenant Hospice on Saturday, June 20. Professional dancers from the hit show Dancing With the Stars will take the stage at the Saenger Theater alongside local celebrity dancers and professionals from the local Fred Astaire Dance Studio, owned by Victor Luna and Dawn Westberry. These two champion dancers will also showcase their amazing talents. “Guests can expect to see professional dancing like you have never seen before along with some fun dances from our local celebrities who have put so much time and hard work into their routines,” says Covenant Hospice Development Manager Angie Schlosser. “Of course, many like seeing the dancers from the hit TV show, Dancing with the Stars as well.” The lineup from the show includes popular dancers Tony Dovolani, Mark Ballas, Sharna Burgess, Tristan MacManus and Iveta Lukosiute. Pensacola’s own local celebrities are also taking the stage, and after months of practice will be sharing the stage with the stars. Local celebrities will be Anthony Pura, Beej Davis, Brian Achatz, Brooke Hicks, Candy Ruddy, Dillon Cleckler, Dr. Jennifer Murray, Rachael Gillette and Dr. Randy Rigsby. Anyone can vote on their favorite local dancer for the coveted People’s Choice Award by donating to their dancer at lifesadance.kintera.org,

with all proceeds benefiting Covenant Hospice. “Last year the local celebrities alone raised $30,000!” Schlosser says. “We love having such an emphasis on our local celebrities, as they are such stars. Additionally, Fred Astaire Dance Studio owners, Dawn Westberry and Victor Luna, continue to outdo themselves with putting a spectacular evening of dance together.” The star-studded night will be entertaining to even those who are not huge fans of dance, with an array of performances from fast themed dances to saucy Latin songs to faultless slower numbers and everything in between. A limited number of VIP tickets are available for $150, which include prominent seating and an exclusive casting party on the mezzanine with hors d’oeuvres and drinks before the ballroom doors open and VIPs can meet, greet, take pictures and gather signatures from the Dancing with the Stars crew. Additionally, guests can enter prize drawings for the event. Bere Jeweler’s has donated the Bell & Ross BRO3 Golden Heritage chronograph watch from the Aviation collection, valued at $5,950, and worn by Dancing with the Stars’ Tony Dovolani. Only 200 tickets are available and they are $50 each. Pensacola’s Historic Village makes the city’s rich history come alive with historical vignettes, house tours, museums and a living history program. Each summer the Village hosts its Open House and invites the public to explore and visit the many sites and museums for a day of free fun and activities. This year’s event will be from 10 am to 4 pm on Saturday, June 6. The Historic Village centers on colonial life in Pensacola, but this year’s Open House will also celebrate the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II with some special activities in conjunction with Viva Florida’s Victory Florida campaign. Families with children can check out the Pensacola Children’s Museum or the traveling exhibit parked just outside the Children’s Museum called Waterventures: Florida’s Learning Lab to learn about local waterways and ecosystems. “We’re going to be doing a scavenger hunt all throughout our complex based out of the Children’s Museum,” says living history coordinator Phillip Mayhair. “The hunt takes kids through the village and they have to answer questions, bring it back and have it verified by a staff member and that will enter them into a drawing for a free birthday party at the museum.” In the Museum of Commerce, attendees can see and get some dancing lessons at a USOstyle swing dance. Little Free Libraries are a global movement to promote literacy and encourage reading in a way that is as accessible as it is whimsical. The tiny libraries are free book exchanges and anyone can take or leave a book, and in the last few years the movement has taken off in Pensacola. The city hosts more than 40 Little Free Libraries, and you could spend the entire summer in an ongoing reading scavenger hunt to visit each one in search of you or your child’s new favorite book. Check out a few of the Little Free Libraries in and around Downtown Pensacola. Stop by when you’re Downtown visiting or spend a day hunting for them all!
Little Theatre’s GI Jukebox will be performing selections from the musical at 11 am and 12 pm in the Museum of Commerce. There will be booths throughout the village showcasing life on the homefront in 1945 like scrap metal drives, civilian dissent and the role of women during the war. Guests can take a selfie in a Rosie the Riveter photo booth and learn about Victory Gardening in the Village Garden. At the Voices of Pensacola Multicultural Center, there will be a screening of Pearl Harbor: One Last Goodbye at 1 pm. Archaeology buffs can see some of the discoveries that have been made right in Downtown. The Pensacola Archaeological Society and the UWF Archaeology Institute will share the fascinating history found below the surface at the British Commanding Officers Command exhibit behind the T. T. Wentworth Museum, and at the Florida Public Archaeology Network Museum just across Main Street. There will also be tours throughout the day at the Lavalle House and the Lear-Rocheblave museum houses, as well as Old Christ Church. The Historic Village Open House offers a day of free fun that will get kids and adults alike engrossed in the incredible historical importance of Pensacola.

Admission is free for members and $8 for kids and adults otherwise. Parents, don’t be surprised if you go to the MESS Hall for your kids but stay for your own enjoyment.
Something about the wide-open sea--and the creatures that call it their homes--excites us with feelings of freedom and adventure. In Pensacola, we’re fortunate to have such great and immediate access to some of the most beautiful water in the world. Unfortunately, not everyone has the time or resources to go snorkeling into the deep and see the marvelous marine creatures in their natural habitat. Fortunately, the next best thing is at the Pensacola Museum of Art through Aug. 9. Guy

The Pensacola tours, an annual hit, are designed for youngsters and other fun-loving fans of pirates and colorful characters of local lore. Pirate tours start with a daring menu—chocolate-covered insects, “bloody finger” food and minty maggots—and conclude after a ride through Downtown Pensacola and a treasure hunt. The Red Trolley troupe of local actors and singers are also reviving their tour of Gulf Breeze, the site of UFO-mania in 1987 that made national headlines but was inspired by a hoax. “UFO: Next Generation” will visit the sites of the sightings, so to speak, and tour Gulf Breeze landmarks. The pirate tours, which take about 90 minutes begin at 6:30 pm June 13 and 27, July 18, and Aug. 1 and 15. The UFO tours begin at 7:30 pm June 20, July 11 and 25 and Aug. 8. Both tours begin and end at the Visitor Information Center at the foot of the Pensacola Bay Bridge. Tickets cost $5 for children and $20 for adults. The family-friendly trolley tours are part of local nonprofit Winterfest of Pensacola. For information or tickets for the pirate tour, visit piratetrolley.com or call 417.7321.

This area is rich in various cultures and this experience is emblematic of that. It helps us celebrate and relive the contributions and input of these people so they are not lost.
Humans are story-telling creatures. We make sense of the world and those around us by the conversations we have and the interactions we share. As humans change, so too do our communications with each other. In Downtown Pensacola, through a partnership between the UWF Historic Trust and Gulf Power, there is finally a way to relive our past experiences and capture our new ones. Through a gift of $600,000, Gulf Power sponsored the opening of the Voices of Pensacola, a living museum located across from Seville Quarter. The dynamic, multifunctional exhibits within represent our past and provide a place for residents and visitors alike to gather, learn and tell their rich stories. Walking in, visitors are immediately greeted by a historically preserved building and various installations that tell the history of Pensacola from the perspective of the different ethnicities that have called this city home—Native Americans, African Americans, Europeans, Hispanics and Asians. Oral history labs as well as a staged lecture space, changing exhibits and the Marketplace—the museum store with meeting space—are featured on the first floor.

LET’S CALL IT A DAY
What are you going to do with the extra time in the day? Stay awake.
How will you spend the longest day of the year, June 21? Pensacola has plenty of activities to offer everyday, and with the extra sunshine, you can experience more of it all! Emily Echevarria and Josh Newby have some ideas for getting the most out of that sweet summer solstice. Attack this jam-packed itinerary with childlike fervor, or with a real child, or both! 5:25 AM Sense your inner child stirring awake with the sunrise. Open bleary eyes and spring from your mattress as excitement bubbles inside you! It’s 5:25 am, and you know you should go back to sleep, since none of your friends/sleepover buddies/parents are awake yet. Briefly attempt to go back to sleep but fail because you’re too excited!
6 AM Fuel up for your big day. Cook yourself two sunnyside up eggs and some bacon. Arrange on plate in smiley face formation, obviously. If not an actual child, prepare and drink coffee for a burst of childlike energy.
1 PM
Attend a baseball game to watch our own fearsome Blue Wahoos take on whatever franchised animal mascot they happen to be battling that day.
Realize it’s Father’s Day. Call your dad! Have warm conversation.
12 PM
Trot over to the MESS Hall. Engage your inner or actual child in a myriad of tactile learning activities. Ride the bicycle that powers a light bulb! Dig a labyrinth of ravines into the wet sand box! Become frustrated by a brain teaser that you just can’t solve. Leave with your head hanging, knowing you’ve brought shame to your family name.
2:05 PM
7:59 AM
3:45 PM Leave Blue Wahoos game. You’ve seen enough.
8 AM Suit up for a leisurely jog or jaunty stroll to pep up your morning. Take in the wondrous sights and sweltering heat of the day. Ah, the first day of summer’s kiss!
11:30 AM
Visit Tin Cow for a tasty al fresco lunch. Indulge in a customized burger literally drowning in your choice of fine toppings, sauces, and condiments, accompanied of course by a decadent milkshake.
4 PM Pop over to the Pensacola Museum of Art to revel in the aquatic artwork on display in The Lure of the Ocean by Guy Harvey. Become inspired by the wondrous world lurking just beneath the sparkling waves right in our own backyard, and contemplate what it would all taste like in your mouth.
8:45 AM Return home and relish the comfort of your air conditioning, perhaps while standing in front of the cool blast of your most conveniently placed air vent. Shower and dress in your best summer styles.
10 AM
Park and lock bikes safely to a light post along Plaza de Luna. Cool off in fountains at said Plaza. Cup hands to fill with water and playfully splash your pal as onlookers scream in glee and/or terror. Dry off by baking in the midday sun for three minutes.
5 PM Wander just across Main Street to Commendencia Slip. Grab the sidewalk chalk from your adventure backpack and begin to fill the sidewalk with colorful pictures of sea life, mimicking the images you’ve just seen at the museum, but poorly.
9:30 AM
Meet a friend at Emerald Coast Tours to rent a couple of bicycles for the day. Wind up and down the city streets and along the bayfront. Throw your feet forward off the pedals and lean back, yelling “Weeeeeeee!” and “Yippeeee! and “I’m so money!” as the pedals spin wildly beneath you.
6:30 PM Follow your fish-spiration to its logical conclusion at the Fish House. Enjoy a dinner of the day’s catch on the Deck as you watch the sun slowly set into the bay, while meditating on the whimsical adventures you’ve enjoyed on this incredible summer solstice in Downtown Pensacola.
Leave house in search of adventure in Downtown Pensacola. It’s out there.
8:21 PM Day ends. Punch air in triumph at your amazing Longest Day 2015!

In which we unfairly judge upcoming attractions based solely on their trailers. By Josh Newby.
INSIDE OUT RELEASE DATE: June 19 CAST: Diane Lane, Kyle MacLachlan, Amy Poehler, Mindy Kaling ENTOURAGE RELEASE DATE: June 3 CAST: Adrian Grenier, Jeremy Piven, Emmanuele Chriqui, Mark Wahlberg What I got from the preview: The boys are back in town, with Vinny, Drama, Turtle, E, and their lovably profane agent Ari trying to get Vinny’s dream project made. A who’s who of celebrity cameos and snapshots of lavish lifestyles pepper the inside look at studio drama and movie-financing. The trailer really connected with 18-year-old Josh, and if I’m being honest, modern-day Josh too. Most notable for: How many times have the creators of a much-loved television show promised a movie that brought back our favorite characters? Given HBO’s recent fame and fortune and the financial success of the Sex and the City franchise, it’s perhaps not surprising that this is the property given the big-screen treatment. Unqualified critical observation: Hey, don’t knock it till you try it. I was with the series for all eight seasons, and while its later episodes descended into the television equivalent of fast food with its one-note portrayals and casual sex, at its best Entourage was a giddy, glossy look at male camaraderie that encouraged audience comparisons to its characters (I was Eric, thanks to my pale skin, neurosis, and the fact that I married someone far better looking than I). That the cast and locales were equally beautiful did not hurt. I’d be lying if I said this movie wasn’t made for a hug-it-out #bronight.
SPY RELEASE DATE: June 5 CAST: Melissa McCarthy, Jason Statham, Rose Byrne, Jude Law What I got from the preview: Deskbound and hugely nerdy CIA analyst Susan Cooper, played with reckless abandon by McCarthy, volunteers to take on the more physical and globe-trotting aspects of the job when a fellow top agent is compromised. What follows are the mostly predictable yet uniquely funny high-jinks of the best spy comedies out there, thanks mostly to the talent behind and in front of the camera. Most notable for: Paul Feig (Bridesmaids, The Heat) is the guy you’ll recognize as pretty much the only one in studio-backed Hollywood who believes in funny women. After churning out a handful of big money-makers, he’s continuing here with a mold that works. Unqualified critical observation: McCarthy’s brand of bull-in-a-china-shop humor is well suited for this ridiculous, slapstick, fish-out-of-water comedy. While I tend to think she’s best in small doses, I’m happy to give her another chance at the lead after last year’s dismal Tammy.
What I got from the preview: Pixar made a name for themselves by showing us places and characters we always wondered about but never experienced—our childhood rooms when we’re not there, the microscopic happenings of the land we walk on, what’s hiding behind our closet door and more. This time, they take us inside our own minds, as the drama of our emotions plays out on the grand stage of our minds with bright colors and humorous wit. After a young girl moves into a new home, one of her five inner emotions makes a mistake and plunges her psyche into chaos. Most notable for: A little Pixar trivia for you: this is the first time Pete Doctor (who famously wrote Toy Story, Monsters, Inc., Up
Fi l m
and Wall-E) is getting a chance to direct. I’m excited to see what he brings to this movie. Unqualified critical observation: This heartwarming but serious look at the brain’s right corridor is a classic hallmark of the studio that can do no wrong: take a serious issue and offer enough poignant insight and jokes to keep kids and adults entertained on different levels. My excitement emotion can’t wait.
Are there some things going on inside your head? They’re spilling a big glass of water. And then they went crazy and everyone was like, “AAAAHHHHHHH!”
JURASSIC WORLD RELEASE DATE: June 12 CAST: Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Judy Greer What I got from the preview: Twenty-two years after the gates to Jurassic Park opened to Drs. Grant, Sattler and Malcolm, nostalgic audiences the world over are getting a look at what has changed. The dino-centric theme park is now a worldwide attraction, but corporate greed is pushing for genetic modification, causing dinosaurs to evolve past their sedations and more passive animal instincts, and become far more intelligent and murderous than anticipated. Most notable for: Original writer Michael Crichton is on board to hopefully not make the movie a huge disappointment. Unqualified critical observation: The movie’s shameless use of CG is perhaps cause for concern, especially after last month’s Mad Max reminded audiences of the type of awe and spectacle that good, ole fashioned physical effects can create. I am cautiously optimistic that this reboot of one of mankind’s most beloved franchises will remain grounded, both in its story and its spectacle. I’m worried, however, that Universal was so preoccupied with whether or not they could make a sequel that they didn’t stop to think if they should.
TED 2 RELEASE DATE: June 26 CAST: Mark Wahlberg, Seth MacFarlane, Amanda Seyfried What I got from the preview: Ted is newly married and wants to have a baby. Everything I learned about the birds and bees aside, Ted has to prove his personhood in a court of law before being able to create life with wife Tami-Lynn. Most notable for: Nothing really. The original was successful, it set up a sequel, and Wahlberg and MacFarlane has enough clout to get their way. Unqualified critical observation: I hate MacFarlane. I hate his juvenile attraction to jokes about burps and boobs, I hate his inclination to grab the lowest-hanging joke instead of delving into the topic and finding the more profound humor beneath the surface, and I hate his stupid ambiguous accent. That being said, I laughed more than a few times at the original, and I’m interested to see what marriage equality parallels he draws in this story that is really just a narrative engine for a cuddly teddy bear who curses a lot.
