WOW, YOU GUYS. This year is flying by! Maybe it’s the crisp fall breezes or perhaps it’s the jam-packed end-of-year calendar, but I’m feeling whipped into a frothy, slightly early bout of frenzied nostalgia for the last eight months. This year I dubbed 2014 my year of “Full”— full heart, brain, schedule and tummy— and I think I’ve satisfactorily lived up to those ideals thus far, but November will test the bounds of the fullness factor in ways for which we can only hope the rest of the year has adequately prepared me— as well as you, dear readers. This month brings Foo Foo Fest, a panoply of activities and exhibits under one banner that will cram nearly countless events into the 12-day span from Nov. 6 through 17. Some are old favorites like the Great Gulfcoast Arts Festival and the First City Art Center Glass Jam, while others are fresh, exciting additions like a projection installation at Artel Gallery and Pensacon’s Pop Expo. Throughout this year I’ve been

delighted by several exhibits at the Pensacola Museum of Art. There was a fascinating array of vintage war propaganda, the blockbuster LEGO exhibit, and I found myself transfixed by the whimsy and the rich context of the recent exhibit of paintings by Hunt Slonem. When I saw the bursts of blue, turquoise and orange painted on the museum’s walls during that exhibit, I wondered just what goes into each installation. DTC took a peek behind the scenes with the curator and volunteers who put in mountains of work to bring exhibits to life, and we hope you’ll appreciate those efforts with a visit to the PMA to see what’s been meticulously displayed this month! November also brings one of my absolute favorite Pensacola things: Ice Flyers ice hockey! We got the chance to photograph some key members of the back-to-back SPHL champions to introduce this year’s team to the community. Toward the end of this month, many might be feeling the stress of impending holidays. Make room in your schedule for the Mahabhuta Yoga Festival, the perfect way to reinvigorate your body and spirit amid the inevitable chaos. This year, and the next months, are indeed completely and utterly full, especially for Downtown. November begs the question, though, at what point does full become bursting at the seams and at what point do those seams get torn asunder in an explosive spout of gooey, metaphorical/literal volcanic eruption of emotion/puke that covers the vicinity like the Marshmallow Man in the climactic showdown in Ghostbusters? These are the questions this month will undoubtedly answer.

Downtown Improvement Board How does Gallery Night work? We get asked this question frequently, so indulge me in a short explanation: there are no City general funds involved in Gallery Night. It is entirely funded by 1) sponsorships, 2) merchants and restaurant special fees, and 3) the Downtown Improvement Board. As such, Gallery Night is designed and managed to benefit the businesses within the DIB boundaries and for the enjoyment of the community at large. The DIB coordinates and manages the event from

arranging security, closing the streets and supplementing artists and entertainment. The DIB also arranges for the event insurance, which is why vendors and entertainers are not allowed to “show up and perform but rather have to be registered through the DIB. All activities are carefully evaluated to insure they improve the quality of the experience while not competing with the businesses who help pay for it. If you ever see us asking certain vendors and/or promoters to leave Ron Butlin, the event - this is why. Lastly, as Executive per City code for any special event Director, DIB
within the City, dogs are not allowed. While most dogs and their owners are terrific, the chance of two dogs getting into a fight with children or adults caught between is not a chance or risk the DIB or City is willing to take. If you live anywhere along the coast, come join us on the third Friday of each month. If you are a business within the DIB please share your ideas and give us input on how to make the event even better. If you are a business not within the DIB boundaries come and enjoy as individuals and ask us about how you might join the DIB.

BY JOSH NEWBY A NEW KIND of festival is coming to Pensacola—one that combines previously established events with new concepts and is presented to residents and visitors under one exciting banner. The members of Arts, Culture and Entertainment (ACE), Inc. had the idea for a fall arts and culture festival that would last 12 days and celebrate the best that Downtown Pensacola has to offer. ACE also awarded grants to 15 area arts and culture organizations to enhance, extend or create events during this special period. Currently, more than 35 events are planned for this 12-day span, with more than enough to keep people of any taste excited and engaged. Here are some events that we here at Downtown Crowd are especially excited about: CRAFT BEER FESTIVAL The annual craft beer festival is a great time for those who love local arts and crafts, fun games and, of course, craft brews. The festival features unlimited tasting of more than 200 craft beers from around the world including beer from breweries such as Kona, Sam Adams, and Pensacola Bay Brewery just to name a few. “The Pensacola Craft Beer Festival is located in the beautiful Community Maritime Park on Main Street,” said Whitney Fike, who handles marketing and communications for the event. The fest takes place Nov. 14 and 15, and tickets cost anywhere from $10 to $100. The entertainment lineup includes blues, rock and country music. Fike said she expects the Foo Foo Fest banner to add even more participation than in years past.

NOV. 6 - 17 “Over the past two years, we’ve seen the numbers of attendees continue to grow and expect that trend to continue this year,” said Fike. “The additional marketing from the Foo Foo Fest has already garnered awareness of our festival to those looking at other events for the week. Foo Foo Fest has reached out to shoulder markets and I think we’ll see an influx of attendees because of their efforts.” PENSACOLA POP EXPO Hosted by Pensacon, the comic and pop culture convention that took Pensacola by storm in its inaugural year earlier in 2014, Pop Expo takes place at Seville Quarter from noon to 10 pm Nov. 15. Admission is free, but a nonperishable food donation is requested. All profits and food donations will benefit Manna Food Pantries. The streets will be lined with vendors, artists, food, cosplay, performances, demonstrations, and more, in a festival atmosphere. “We really want this to be a sort of mini-Pensacon,” said Manda Manning, director of marketing for Pensacon. “Other big conventions across the country have a smaller event midway between their annual festivities, and we thought Foo Foo Fest would be the perfect fit.” The Pensacon staff are working hard to ensure this event is just the first of many, and that children and adults will be able to enjoy the festival. Pop Expo is a family-friendly happening that
features guests sure to delight all ages. Pensacon 2014 guest and Winston Zeddemore in Ghostbusters, Ernie Hudson is a featured guest of the event and will be available for autographs and pictures. In celebration of Ghostbusters’ 30th anniversary, there will be a free outdoor screening at 7 pm of the film with special introduction from Hudson. Immediately before the screening, there will be an allages costume contest on stage at 6 pm. “We’re very excited to be putting this event on for Pensacola as part of Foo Foo Fest. Think of this as Geek Gallery Night, with more of a focus on pop culture and more family friendly activities,” said Mike Ensley, Pensacon chairman. BACK ON THE BLOCKS BLOCK PARTY The Back on the Blocks party is an homage to the past with a fresh update for the future. In the 1970s, the radio station WBOP used to host musical block parties where residents and visitors alike could come and party in and around area businesses, which included doctors’ offices, lawyers’ offices, restaurants and more. Now, thanks to a Foo Foo Fest grant, the Belmont-DeVilliers neighborhood association is bringing back the block party idea Nov. 11-15 from the midafternoon to late at night. The five-day celebration will feature arts, music, dance and film and highlight African-American culture. “This area used to be a focal point of the community, and we want that to return,” said John Powell, who helped
organize the event. “When we had a party, the party was there. It is our hope to be able to do it every year, and this is our launch point. It has been our dream for a long time to do this.” 3-D VIDEO-MAPPING PROJECTION Some people call it special augmented reality. Some call it a three-dimensional projection. At DTC, we call it awesome. Thanks to a grant, Artel Gallery will host Paintscaping, a projection company from Los Angeles that has developed a Pensacola-specific installation for the Artel building. As the crowds gather Nov. 6 – 9, from 7 to 9:30 pm, they will be able to witness the iconic building as it suffers simulated cannonball blasts, hurricane winds and more. 3D projection is an emerging art form that allows artists to make any surface their canvas. Video images are projected onto irregular surfaces – most often buildings. The projection presents an alternate reality of what is on, or in, the space. “This most often happens in big cities like LA or New York or Las Vegas,” said Suzanne Robbert, president of Artel. “We worked with UWF and Paintscaping to bring this project to life. It has been a dream of ours since 2010.” The installation, called A Tale of Five Flags, will last five to eight minutes. The immersive history lesson will feature humor, live performers and other surprises. “This is going to excite a lot of people,” said Robbert. B u s i n e s s Pr o f i l e LISTENING TO WHITNEY Sansom describe hair styles, new trends, and the process of engaging with customers is not unlike hearing an artist passionately describe their work. Her methods layer new tricks and bold ideas onto her experience and education the same way she masterfully combines her clients’ wishes with stylish outcomes. A Pensacola native, Sansom is the new kid on a block full of hair stylists and salons, but the shop’s aesthetic completely sets it apart. Hippie chic mixes with small-town business charm at Moonflower Salon. The flowers adorning the storefront match the ones displayed in the shop’s rustic interior. Open for just over a month, the business caters to customers in a unique way, by offering them complimentary drinks, a consultation and more before choosing a style. Sansom’s customers are the masters of their locks’ destiny, and the Moonflower staff are the fearless guides that make it all happen. Sansom, who has been cutting, fashioning and transforming hair for more than 10 years, said she knew she wanted to be in the beauty industry since she was 16, when she first worked in a salon. “It has always just come so
naturally to me, and it is very rewarding to make someone feel their absolute best,” said Sansom. “People feel the best about themselves when they look good.” Sansom fosters the best not only for her clients, but for her staff, as well. She emphasizes continuing education for her employees so that customers can look appropriately trendy. “Basic education is important, but you have to keep learning,” said Sansom. “For example, right now short hair and long bobs are really in, as is red and dark hair.” The business boasts a variety of organic hair products that are guaranteed to make patrons feel as good as they look, further evidence that the services offered are infused with Sansom’s convictions and artistry. Watching Sansom work is indeed like watching an artist at the top of their craft—total commitment, unwavering dedication, and a need to make dreams a reality. If these principles have been lacking from your hair care experience, you won’t know what a difference they make until you experience them. The Pensacola Ice Flyers are back at the Hangar, kicking off the 2014/2015 season as back-to-back Southern Professional Hockey League champions. Ice hockey brings thrilling sport and fast-paced fun to the Pensacola Bay Center, and local fans are ardent supporters of their ice hockey heroes. This month DTC got a chance to jumpstart the season by goofing off in the stands with this season’s team leaders.
Steve Bergin, Assistant Captain The veteran Ice Flyer Steve Bergin returns as an assistant captain for the second season. The defenseman was picked up by the team originally during the 2011-2012 season, and from there he built a strong reputation as the team built on each season’s success since its first appearance at the SPHL finals.
Coach Rod Aldoff After clinching a victory and the Presidents Cup in the 2012/2013 season, the Pensacola Ice Flyers welcomed new leadership in Coach Rod Aldoff, who led them to a second consecutive championship, making SPHL history. Aldoff is a former Ice Pilot, playing for Pensacola years ago as part if his 15 year playing career, and he returns to the Hangar to for the 2014/2015 season to build on the continued success of the Ice Flyers.
Brett Lutes, Captain Brett Lutes has played 11 seasons of professional hockey, experience that will come in handy in his leadership position with the Ice Flyers this season. In last season’s 44 games, Lutes scored 18 goals and had 25 assists.
Jeremy Gates, Assistant Captain Defenseman Jeremy Gates will serve as an assistant captain for this season. He has played a role in both of the last two championship seasons, after being signed as a rookie to the team for the 2012-2013 season. downtowncrowd.com Nov 2014

WHEN ASKED ABOUT how the Mahabhuta form of yoga stands out from other styles like Hatha and Bikram, Stacey Vann was quick to set the record straight. “Mahabhuta isn’t a form,” she said, clarifying that Mahabhuta yoga is more than a physical variation of the practice. Mahabhuta is actually known as “The Great Element,” which is physically present in five different elements: fire, water, earth, wind and ether, which acts as the space where everything exists and acts. What sounds like a grouping of names best fit for a fantasy novel or a 70s Motown band is really a unifying ideology for the third annual Mahabhuta Yoga Festival. The festival, which will run Nov. 2123 at the Sanders Beach Community Center, will bring together many yogis (yoga practitioners), teachers and curious individuals to practice various styles of yoga at all levels. Vann is the festival’s founder and the owner of Breathe Yoga & Wellness Center. Since there are many yoga festivals taking place around the country, she wanted to create an event of her own and establish connections in the regional yoga community.
12 Nov 2014 downtowncrowd.com
“It was more just inspiration, kind of when you just allow things to unfold,” Vann said. Several guest presenters and instructors will be heading up workshops and classes during the festival such as Vani Kindrell, Rebecca Sathre, Aaron Lind and Surdas and Vajra Yogini. Their classes will encompass the physical, mental and emotional benefits of Kundalini yoga, Vedic-Thai yoga, and AcroYoga, among other types and topics. In addition to physical exercise and meditation, music is an important part of the yoga experience, and the Mahabhuta Yoga Festival will feature plenty of quality musicians. Four-time Grammy nominee Michael Brant DeMaria will perform Nov. 21, and Sean Johnson and the Wild Lotus Band will play their dynamic kirtan tunes on Nov. 21 and 22. The Mahabhuta Yoga Festival will accommodate children as well as adults. Christa Parent, a yoga practitioner since 2005 that has worked with children and families for over 15 years, will head up the “Mahabhuta’s Mystical Kids” workshop, according

PMA: Behind the Scenes by Emily Lullo photos by Guy Stevens
If you’ve visited the Pensacola Museum of Art in the last year, you’ve seen a snippet of the everchanging exhibits that have come and gone through the space. From a unique sculptural installation to large and small-scale paintings, to LEGO masterpieces and plenty more, the PMA has seen its share of various media. While visitors experience a leisurely stroll through the museum as they engage with each piece, few know the breadth of work that goes into each installation. Behind every exhibit are countless demanding hours of research, planning and manual labor, headed up for the last year by chief curator Alexis Leader. In a smaller museum, the chief curator is involved in every aspect of an installation, from utilizing a variety of sources to choose what exhibits actually come to the museum, to unpacking and re-crating works, to helping paint the walls between exhibits. “The physicality of my job often amuses people,” Leader says. “I lift oversized wooden crates, stack pedestals, scale ten foot ladders to adjust track lighting, sand, paint and more.” A typical installation lasts about one to two weeks. First the outgoing exhibit is soft packed and/or crated, and condition report paperwork is completed to ensure works are in the same state they were lent in, before being shipped. The walls are then prepped and painted before new exhibit is brought to the gallery. The planned layout is weighed against any new layout ideas until the prepator, Leader and the PMA Curatorial Lab interns install the work. 14 Nov 2014 downtowncrowd.com
“It’s a sea of measurements, vinyl wall text, writing and cutting individual artwork labels, lighting and late nights but the end product makes every extra hour worth it,” she says. Painting the museum’s walls between exhibits is a huge undertaking, with 1,500 square feet of wall space in the downstairs galleries and 6,000 in the upper galleries. While some exhibits work best with the PMA’s base color (Eternity by Benjamin Moore), others, like the Hunt Slonem painting exhibit, call for brighter hues. Leader worked with the Ogden Museum of Southern Art, which loaned much of the Hunt Slonem exhibit from its permanent collection, to get paint samples that were approved by a designer that worked with the artist, and then had the local Paint Mart expertly match those colors. Volunteers are essential to speeding up the installation process. Leader says it typically takes
about two days to prime and paint the second floor galleries, and Leader has fond memories of feats completed with volunteer help. “The best use of volunteers I have coordinated was when I utilized both floors of the museum for an exhibit in February,” Leader says. “It only took us two days to paint everything. It was amazing! I didn’t feel my arms for about a week after that but the galleries looked great!” There are significant challenges to the job of chief curator, whether it’s the daunting task of planning an exhibit of more than 70 works by masters of art history, or the sheer physical efforts, which staff members jokingly refer to as “museum crossfit.” Leader says the late nights and sore muscles are worth the reward of fostering a dialogue among viewers about the exhibits she methodically designs. “Curators do more than simply hang art on walls,” Leader says. “We manage every element of the galleries from the moment you step in for the best possible visitor experience we are able to provide. Each item from the layout of the artwork, label text, lighting, pedestals and even the bench you stop to sit on has been meticulously placed.” downtowncrowd.com Nov 2014

DON’T Appropriately happy and at an event, but that dude is blocking the graffiti wall. As a selfie artist, you have to make sure all aspects of the picture are just right.
DO This picture represents what all selfies should aspire to be--well framed, in front of something interesting, with a nonchalant face--and it only took a couple dozen tries!

Bail Bonds WHILE IT’S NOT an ideal situation to get arrested by police or have a friend or loved one get arrested, the process of working with a bail bondsman to get out of jail and on with life doesn’t have to be a nightmare. A professional and courteous bail bondsman can make the transition smooth and simple—and even offer some preemptive tools to move the process along even more. Local bail bonds business owner Matt McKeehan has built his company on being available whenever clients need his services, and working with defendants to help the process run as smoothly as possible. When someone is arrested and their bond is set according to the bond schedule, they have two
options: one is called a cash bond, where they pay the full bond outright, and later get that money back, minus any court costs and fees. The other option many people choose is to utilize the services of a bail bondsman, paying ten percent of their bond if the bond is more than $1,000, and only $100 if it is less than $1,000. The bail bondsman has to accept a certain level of risk, because if the defendant doesn’t attend his or her court date, then the full bond amount has to be paid to the courts. Bondsmen generally want clients they feel 100 percent certain will attend their scheduled court dates. “Of course we all want to write those bonds,
B u s i n e s s Pr o f i l e
ULLO BY EMILY L PHOTO BY ENS GUY STEV 2728 N Pace Blvd. Pensacola, FL 32505 850-444-2663 but there are some bonds that are riskier that other bondsmen won’t touch,” McKeehan says. “We’ll try to work with clients to where we can make it happen.” A bail bondsmen’s services may be needed at any time, which is why McKeehan has someone in the office 24/7, with at least one of five bail bondsmen ready at any time, whether the middle of the night, a holiday or any time in between. He says availability and customer service are very important to him, and he’s even been known to make calls to clients’ family members to deliver messages as the process moves along. Matt McKeehan Bail Bonds doesn’t just help those who have just been arrested and need to post bond. One thing many people may not realize is that he can also deal with any outstanding warrant with a bond that was issued anywhere in the state of Florida with a process called rapid intake, which gets the warrant addressed quickly so the defendant doesn’t have to spend time behind bars. “With rapid intake there’s no handcuffs, no bars; they come in with their cosigners and money and we do the paper work, then they follow us over to the jail and give them the bond, then they take the defendant in, take the fingerprints, take their picture and let them go,” McKeehan explains. Matt McKeehan Bail Bonds is also taking the bail bonds business into the digital age, having recently developed a mobile app. The app allows users to set up three emergency contacts so that in the event that they are being taken to jail for any reason, pressing the “panic” button on the app will sends a message to Matt McKeehan Bail Bonds with the appropriate people to alert. It even sends GPS coordinates in case a vehicle has to be left behind so that it can be easily retrieved. While no one wants to deal with getting arrested, handling the situation without adding insult to injury is key. The professionals at Matt McKeehan Bail Bonds can get clients through the ordeal with expertise and helpfulness any time they’re needed.

District
26 Nov 2014 downtowncrowd.com
Downtown Pensacola’s Historic District comes alive with festivals and events throughout November. While the beautiful parks and historic sites are a year-round attraction, this month you can see the best Pensacola has to offer in Foo Foo Fest, a 12 day extravaganza of arts and cultural events, many of which will take place in and around the Historic District. From art exhibits at the Pensacola Museum of Art to special productions at Pensacola Little Theatre, to the Pensacola Pop Expo at Seville Quarter, Foo Foo Fest will bring plenty of adventures to this beautiful area. The Great Gulfcoast Art Festival will take place Nov. 7-9 right in Seville Square, and this Pensacola mainstay festival is not to be missed! The Historic District isn’t only for special events, though. It’s the perfect place for a jog along the waterfront or the picturesque historic streets, or just a leisurely day of walking and window shopping. Meet your everyday needs with all kinds of businesses that call this beautiful segment of Downtown home.

In which we unfairly judge upcoming attractions based solely on their trailers. By Josh Newby
INTERSTELLAR RELEASE DATE: November 7 CAST: Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, Michael Caine BIG HERO 6 RELEASE DATE: November 7 CAST: TJ Miller, Maya Rudolph, Alan Tudyk, Damon Wayans What I got from the preview: In this beautifully animated tale, a lonely boy discovers (or builds; it’s not quite clear) a plus-sized inflatable robot. The two team up with a squad of superheroes to save the city of San Fransokyo from a mysterious, evil force. Most notable for: With multiplexes nationwide now fully saturated with superhero/ comic book hysteria, it is refreshing to see a more child-friendly, humorous, animated take on the genre. Unqualified critical observation: If you’re a regular reader of this column, you know that I’m a superhero movie-hater. I drink that haterade daily, coupled with hater tots, to fuel my hateration until I reach full-blown haterage. That being said, I can’t get through this preview without laughing, so maybe I’ll give this one a shot.
DUMB AND DUMBER TO RELEASE DATE: November 14 CAST: Jim Carrey, Jeff Daniels, Kathleen Turner, Rob Riggle What I got from the preview: Harry and Lloyd, the titular characters from this and earlier entries in the series, go on the search for the former’s illegitimate daughter and involve themselves in all manner of “hilarious” hijnks along the way. Most notable for: That awful prequel from a few years back notwithstanding, it is surprising that the cast and crew of the original got back together for a sequel 20 years later. The first launched the careers of many on both sides of the camera. Is it ironic or coincidental that many of their careers will be bookended by the same franchise? Unqualified critical observation: In my insatiable thirst to deliver you quality, complete content, dear reader, I scoured several different previews of this movie in order to find out more. Each and every preview, unfortunately, features the exact same scenes and bits in different order, leading me to believe that not only are all the tolerable portions of the movie expended in the trailer, but also that this movie will be awful.
What I got from the preview: In a world with dwindling resources, a group of intrepid astronauts, led by Matthew McConaughey and his charming drawl, must make use of a wormhole to travel through time and space to discover a new home for humanity. Most notable for: Christopher Nolan is one of the few directors in the biz who can tackle ambitious, confusing storylines in an entertaining, mainstream fashion. Couple his talent with a peak-level McConaissance, and you have
Fi l m
all the ingredients for a smart blockbuster. Unqualified critical observation: I’ve been excited for this movie pretty much since it was first announced. It has a very Contact-esque feel to it, and the visuals look absolutely stunning. The subject matter is vast and mysterious, the talent is top-notch, and the running time approaches three hours. Prepare your minds—and bladders—to be blown wide open.
THE HUNGER GAMES: MOCKINGJAY - PART 1 RELEASE DATE: November 21 CAST: Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth What I got from the preview: After the fantastic events of Catching Fire ended on somewhat of a cliffhanger, Katniss, Peeta and others are back to begin a rebellion against the Capitol with the members of long-forgotten District 13. Most notable for: Let’s hear it for Holllywood on this one, everyone. The folks responsible for bringing The Hunger Games to life did so to great effect, often producing sequences and characters that were better than the source material. Hollywood hadn’t gotten Young Adult right since Harry Potter, and this series fantastically matches content with spectacle. Unqualified critical observation: I thought Catching Fire was one of the best films of 2013, and I have no lower hopes for Mockingjay – Part 1. The story is relevant and topical, the action makes sense and is enjoyable, and the characters—some of whom we will lose forever in this chapter—are fleshed out and real.
HORRIBLE BOSSES 2 RELEASE DATE: November 26 CAST: Jason Bateman, Charlie Day, Jason Sudeikis What I got from the preview: Those lovable almost-murderers from the first movie return to start a new business, but when things don’t go as planned, they put in motion a kidnapping scheme that they hope will produce a large ransom. Most notable for: Who would have thought the first movie, about a bunch of dirtymouthed, raunchy tools who try to kill their bosses played by Oscar nominees, would be one of the funniest movies of 2011? And who would’ve thought the entire cast, plus Chris Pine and Christoph Waltz, would reunite for a sequel? Well, I don’t know the answers to those questions, but I’m happy to see it happen. Unqualified critical observation: By combining unexpected, black humor with actors playing against type, this sequel will hopefully be just as devilishly fun as the first.
