OCTOBER BRINGS THE onset of fall weather and along with it the endless musing of autumnalphiliacs everywhere. Yes, pumpkin latte drinkers and scarf knitters: your day has finally come. There’s plenty more to October than your knee-high camel boots and crocheted fingerless gloves. This month’s fashion statements should instead involve gory makeup jobs and perfectly conceived costuming, because Halloween is here! Let’s stretch this spooky season out Christmas-style, with party planning and home décor that’s been brewing since late summer. Whether your idea of a great All Hallows’ Eve involves exploring the ghastly history of Pensacola or setting the perfect locally blown glass pumpkin on your mantle, Downtown has everything you need to celebrate.

Speaking of those gorgeous glass gourds, this month we put a spotlight on the glassblowing artisans at First City Art Center that have brought thousands of these beloved keepsakes to life. This working art studio is well known for its Hot Glass Cold Brew events and its annual Pumpkin Patch, but First City also hosts many workshops and studio artists yearround that form a massive contribution to our local art scene. October in Pensacola also means that festival season is well underway. This month brings a food-centric mainstay in the Pensacola Greek Fest, where I always at least make a pit stop for a delicious tzatziki-slathered gyro, even if I can’t stay for a full day of dancing, tours and celebrating. New to the Downtown fest lineup is the Greater Good Festival. We welcome this seven-year strong event to the Maritime Park which will be filled with music, kids activities, yoga and more on the second weekend of the month. Even without the poetic romance of blustery winds that carry swirls of richlyhued fallen leaves—which, let’s face it, would mean that an actual winter was coming and who wants that?— fall in Pensacola offers a plethora of opportunities for photo-worthy fun. How about posing with the cast of PLT’s Rocky Horror? Or a color-saturated shot of your to-go baklava glistening with honey from Greek Fest. Or if you must flaunt your fall obsession, show off the newest addition to your glass pumpkin collection. Anything but your Starbucks cup, please.

GREEK
fest
by EMILY LULLO & JOSH NEWBY
The Pensacola Greek Festival is one of the Pensacola Bay area’s signature festivals, mixing southern hospitality with Hellenic culture and cuisine. Live Greek music, youth folk dancing, and church tours make 1720 W. Garden St. into the place to be during the second weekend in October. The three-day cultural event provides an opportunity for the Pensacola Greeks to share their heritage, culture and faith with the local community. The event features a variety of delicious Greek dinners, sandwiches, coffee, desserts, drinks, and shopping in the Greek Market. Guests will experience the atmosphere of a typical Greek taverna - a casual restaurant with outdoor seating where you can enjoy traditional Greek cuisine and socialize with friends. Food, music and dancing are not the only attractions offered at this festival. Visitors can attend 20-minute church tours to see the architectural beauty of the inside of an Orthodox Christian church and learn a little about the Orthodox faith and its culture. Byzantine hymns will be sung by choir members at the end of each tour. Hours are Friday from 11 am to 10 pm, Saturday from 11 am to 10 pm, and Sunday from noon to 6 pm. As always, admission to the festival is free. The festival is truly a labor of love by parishioners. Months of preparation go into the planning and presentation of this event. Stop by the Hellenic Center on any weekend in the fall and see many cheerful faces and busy hands as church members prepare food so they can share their food, their faith and their ethnic pride for one weekend each year to their Gulf Coast neighbors.
Oct. 10 & 11: 11 am - 10 pm; Oct. 12: noon - 6 pm
SOME DISHES TO TRY AT THIS YEAR’S FESTIVAL
Calamari
Calamari, or with gratuitous extra syllables added by the Greeks, kalamarakia, is a common seafood meze, or appetizer. Eaten sliced or whole, grilled or fried, this delicious cephalopod will be enjoyed by the ton breaded and deep fried to perfection at the Taverna.
Baklava This desert is a little nutty! Ha! But seriously, it is comprised of delicate layers of buttered filo pastry, spices and chopped almonds and walnuts drizzled with honey syrup. If that isn’t enough to rev your taste buds’ engines, then what are you even doing here? Leave.
Gyro
Often mispronounced as JIE-roh, JEE-roh, GEE-roh, HEE-roh, or PEE-tuh SAND-wich, the gyro (YEE-roh) is one of the most well-loved foods in all of Greece, and the one ethnic dish that everyone claims to have tried. The dish is made of meat roasted on a vertical spit and served with tomato, onion and tzatziki sauce wrapped in pita (Wikipedia, 2014). Available at the Taverna.
Greek Salad
A bed of greens topped with peppers, black olives, tomatoes, fresh feta cheese, and a tangy traditional Greek dressing, this is the choice of your one superhealthy friend. While your friend will likely have the large as their main entree, you can feel free to have it as just a side to soften the gastronomic blow of the other indulgent offerings you’ll inevitably consume at this tasty fest. Available at the Hellenic Hall and Taverna.
Pastitso
This carb blowout is brought to you courtesy of layered, baked macaroni with a seasoned tomatocinnamon meat sauce topped with cheese sauce. This indulgent cube of calories looks like it came straight off a Buzzfeed cheese bucket list. Available in the Hellenic Hall.
Spanakopita
Spanakopita is a tasty layering of buttery flaky filo dough, spinach, and feta cheese sliced into perfectly biteable triangles. This flavorful, savory pie satisfies the tastebuds while sneaking in a nutritious serving of spinach. But if you want to cut out the vegetable middleman, order tiropita, which is just the cheese and the filo without those pesky vitamins and minerals. Available in the Hellenic Hall. downtowncrowd.com Oct 2014

FEW THINGS SIGNAL the start of Florida’s transition from summer to fall like the sight of pumpkins. They can be seen for sale on the side of the road and as decoration in homes. Their taste can be noticed in everything from homemade pies to frequently purchased lattés. The pumpkin is such an integral part of cooler weather and everyone’s favorite season that it is perhaps no surprise that the more artistic among us have taken to immortalizing its visage with glass and clay. First City Art Center (FCAC) celebrates the pumpkin, the friendlier weather and the artistic process with its annual Glass Pumpkin Patch event, held this year Oct. 10 and 11. At the event, consumers can browse the vast selection of glass and clay pumpkins and purchase a few for themselves or friends. These beautiful, ornate pieces of art range in size from just a few inches in diameter to as much as a foot across. “This is our eighth event, and it’s our biggest fund-raiser of the year,” said Meredith Doyen, executive director of the non-profit arts organization. “The revenues account for about a quarter of our budget.” On Oct. 10 from 6 to 8 pm, FCAC will host a preview party where, for just $25, members of the community can have first dibs on the over 2,000 glass pumpkins for sale. The preview party features complimentary hors d’oeuvres, beverages, live glassblowing demonstrations, pottery demos, live music, door prizes and more. On Oct. 11, from 10 am to 2 pm, the event is open to the general public. Doyen said that since the event
“
started, its popularity has surprised even her, with a line of people often wrapping around the building, waiting for the doors to open. “It’s become almost like Black Friday,” said Doyen. “We expect more than 1,000 people to attend.” Local artists begin making the Pumpkin Patch pumpkins in May. Many of these artists are volunteers who learn their craft while creating timeless pieces of art for FCAC to sell to the public. Some certified artists choose to rent studio space at FCAC and sell their signature pumpkins at the event, as well. Most of the pumpkins are made during creative binges with 10 or 15 artists expertly crafting more than 90 pumpkins every four hours. John Shoemaker is one such artist who hails from Philadelphia and is a current artist in residence and instructor at FCAC. ”The sense of excitement and empowerment stemming from manipulating molten glass is a constant inspiration for me as an instructor,”
THESE PUMPKINS ARE LOCALLY MADE WITH A LOT OF ATTENTION AND ARTISTRY INVESTED INTO EACH INDIVIDUAL PIECE.
said Shoemaker. “I find that teaching glassblowing starts from a very different place than many other media, in the sense that you teach someone how to become aware of their body in motion and how the material responds to the actions of their body.” These unique, artistic pumpkins are made using the traditional glassblowing technique, which involves inflating molten glass into a mold or by freeblowing short puffs of air using a metal blowpipe and working it into a particular shape. Color is applied during the process. For those interested in learning the craft, Shoemaker offers the popular “Make Your Own…(glass items)” and the one-day, three-hour workshops (Beginning I & II; Intermediate I & II) on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. A regional love for locally crafted goods is to thank for the success of the Pumpkin Patch event, the center itself and the classes that develop people’s artistic sensibilities, according to Doyen. “This time of year, you can buy a glass pumpkin almost anywhere,” said Doyen. “But it’s not the same. These pumpkins are locally made with a lot of attention and artistry invested into each individual piece. People appreciate that.”

GREATER GOOD FEST
OCT. 10-12 AT THE COMMUNITY MARITIME PARK BY CHRISTIAN PACHECO
FOR THE EIGHTH YEAR, THE GREATER GOOD FESTIVAL IS bringing diversity, togetherness and light-hearted fun to the families of Northwest Florida. This time, however, the festival will be a little closer to home for many of its fans. The festival will take place Oct. 1112 at Community Maritime Park in Downtown Pensacola. It was formerly held at Adventures Unlimited in Milton. Ric Kindle, the festival’s founder and music coordinator, explained that he worked with the city to stage it Downtown in response to guests’ request that the event be held in a more central location. “The more people we can “THERE ARE MOMENTS reach with the festival, the WHEN YOU’RE TOTALLY IN better it will be,” said Kindle. THE PRESENT MOMENT, The upcoming celebration will AND I LOOK AROUND include yoga classes, children’s AND I JUST SEE THE KIDS PLAYING, PEOPLE LAUGHING, THE MUSIC GOING ON… THOSE MOMENTS ARE SPECIAL TO ME.”
activities and vendor booths. Two of the local vendors are Rafi Perez, a local contemporary artist, and Klee Galligan, a jewelry maker. Both will be featured in the festival’s Visual Art Zone and are excited to be a part of this year’s Greater Good Festival, according to a news release. Equally as promising as the visual art and activities offered is the lineup of musical entertainment. Various regional acts including Betsy Badwater, Ivory Faces and Delta Reign will take the stage at the Hunter Amphitheater, jamming out different styles like bluegrass, reggae and rock ‘n’ roll. Another one of the popular groups is Flow Tribe, which will headline the first night on Saturday, Oct. 11. Flow Tribe, a funk rock band from New Orleans, has toured all around the country and has shared the stage with Trombone Shorty, Juvenile and Bill Summers, according to their official website. The event’s parent company’s mission statement says that the Greater Good Festival’s aim is to not only encourage diversity and enrich the community through visual arts,
music and the healing arts, but also to increase awareness for area children’s organizations. In the past, the event has partnered with groups like Big Brothers, Big Sisters, Campfire Kids and others, featuring them on posters, t-shirts and radio advertisements, said Kindle. This year, The Greater Good Festival is promoting Emagine-Nation, a virtual suite mainly specializing in children’s education and entertainment, but also providing helpful tools for high school and collegeage students. The website includes games that reward players with website currency and unlockable content, homework help and a safe social media hub. EmagineNation launches on Oct. 13. For many of his fellow volunteer staffers, Kindle said what they enjoy most is seeing the festival come together after much hard work because it emulates the Greater Good essence, to bring children and adults from all walks of life together. “There are moments when you’re totally in the present moment, and I look around and I just see the kids playing, people laughing, the music going on… those moments are special to me,” said Kindle. For more information on the Greater Good Festival, including ticket prices and sponsorship details, contact Ric Kindle at 982.4466, rkindle2012@gmail.com or visit greatergoodfestival.com.

STEPPING OUT IN STYLE FASHION SHOW By Emily Lullo THE UNIQUE EVENT BENEFITS A GOOD CAUSE WHILE SHOWING OFF SOME KILLER STYLES. NEW YORK FASHION Week may have come and gone last month, but Pensacola is gearing up for its own night of runway revelry. Stepping Out In Style, the 38th Annual Women’s Board Fashion Show, will bring a night of style for a good cause to New World Landing on Oct. 16. Sue Straughn will be the master of ceremonies at the event and the night kicks off at 5:30 pm with cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and a silent auction. Attendees can bid on items like a portrait session with a local oil painter while mingling with fellow fashion-savvy guests. “The silent auction has everything from fashion related items to spa items and we’ll also have trips and jewelry,” says Baptist Healthcare Foundation development director Heather Moorer. At 6:30 pm the live auction will take place with auctioneer and Cat Country radio personality Brent Lane, and at 7 pm, the main event will be staged on the catwalk. This year the Baptist Healthcare Foundation Women’s Board Executive Committee volunteered many hours to host a premier event that utilizes top of the line talent including 14 Oct 2014 downtowncrowd.com
a professional coordinator to organize the fashion extravaganza. Both local and professional models will strut in fashions from local retailers including Bluetique, Market & Mainly Shoes, Indigeaux Denim Bar & Boutique and Fig. These boutiques will be showcasing the latest in fall and winter fashion to the community. Moorer says the fashion show attracts a wide audience from couples to ladies old and young. “The biggest thing is if you enjoy fashion it’s an awesome event,” she says. Last year the event raised $76,000 for Baptist Healthcare and in the past the funds raised have been put toward things like a specific piece of equipment for the electro physiology lab and the library at the Lakeview Center’s children’s center. This year organizers hope to meet or top last year’s numbers. Join in the glitz and glamour at the 38th Annual Women’s Board Fashion Show for a night of high fashion fun to support programs and projects for Baptist Healthcare. Tickets are $50 and are available at baptisthealthcarefoundation.org.

In which we unfairly judge upcoming attractions based solely on their trailers. By Josh Newby.
GONE GIRL RELEASE DATE: October 3 CAST: Ben Affleck, Rosamund Pike, Neil Patrick Harris ALEXANDER AND THE TERRIBLE, HORRIBLE, NO GOOD, VERY BAD DAY RELEASE DATE: October 10 CAST: Steve Carrell, Jennifer Garner What I got from the preview: Members of a happy, Disney-constructed, PGappropriate family live in their nice house and work at their nice jobs and go to their nice school. If this seems like the story of my life, fear not, because it’s not long before things start to go wrong. Everything, in fact, starts to go wrong in this comedy of errors based on the 1972 children’s book. Most notable for: Sandwiched between a summer full of overlong superhero movies and a fall full of Oscar contenders is this quaint, short little movie based on a book that remains a childhood favorite. Unqualified critical observation: It’s been a while since a nice, sitcom-style, familyappropriate comedy came out, and I’m not even ashamed about saying that I’m looking forward to this. Plus, Steve Carrell is always a pleasure to watch and Jennifer Garner has been absent too long from the silver screen. File this one in the excellent, outstanding, good, not very bad category.
FURY RELEASE DATE: October 17 CAST: Brad Pitt, Shia LaBeouf, Logan Lerman, Michael Pena What I got from the preview: Toward the end of World War II, a war-hardened Brad Pitt commands an aging tank and leads a small group of men behind enemy lines to dismantle some positioned Nazi troops. If this seems like my typical Sunday afternoon—never mind. Anyway, the whole preview oscillates between grim, saturation-sapped landscapes and heroic speeches. Most notable for: Directed by David Ayer of Training Day and End of Watch fame, this movie seems to be the war movie for those who hate war movies. Unqualified critical observation: The premise may not seem like the most original, but the expertise with which the material is handled seems top-notch, and on those merits alone I will recommend this one. Plus, Pitt’s haircut, either inspired by or the inspiration for the modern-day lazy hipster Mohawk, is well worth the price of admission. Also, Shia LaBeouf is shrouded by so much dirty clothing and greasy makeup that you almost forget it’s him.
What I got from the preview: Two young, attractive people meet at a party, date each other, and eventually get married. If this seems at first like the story of how I met my wife, you’re in for a rude awakening when the wife disappears and foul play is suspected. The media descends, questioning the husband’s innocence in the matter, as we learn more about these characters and how little they know about each other. Most notable for: Where to begin? The book is full of nasty characters doing nasty things and tackles relevant issues of economic uncertainty and the media’s role in dramatizing and endlessly analyzing popular criminal proceedings. Director David Fincher
Fi l m
(Seven, The Social Network, Fight Club) is one of the best in the business and handles this difficult story matter with his trademark sense of darkness, foreboding and uncomfortably low lighting. Unqualified critical observation: Gillian Flynn, the author of the book and obviously a very troubled individual, wrote the screenplay with a different ending to keep readers interested and to prevent viewers from being spoiled. The talent both in front of and behind the camera is enough to make me buy advance tickets even had I not watched the preview and advance tickets were still a thing.
MEN, WOMEN & CHILDREN RELEASE DATE: October 17 CAST: Adam Sandler, Jennifer Garner, Emma Thompson, Judy Greer What I got from the preview: An ensemble cast brings to life a story of love, adultery, heartbreak and romantic disillusionment in the age of technology. Not a word is spoken, but the faces of rage and disappointment speak a thousand words about the sexual frustrations of teenagers and adults. Most notable for: Romantic movies nowadays seem to take one of two routes: the unrealistic, predictable comedy with see-through characters, or the Nicholas Sparks brand of romantic tragedy. This film, however, takes a serious look at modern romance through a critical lens. Unqualified critical observation: Although everyone in this movie appears sad all the time, I am looking forward to it. Jason Reitman (Juno, Up in the Air) is usually a fantastic purveyor of complex, everyday characters dealing with relatable problems. Don’t let the presence of Adam Sandler fool you; this is not an Adam Sandler vehicle and contains no frat-boy humor.
NIGHTCRAWLER RELEASE DATE: October 31 CAST: Jake Gyllenhaal, Rene Russo, Bill Paxton What I got from the preview: A young man with a camera who can’t get a job finds his calling when he begins documenting crimes as they happen. He sells the footage to the highest bidder and eventually becomes an accessory to the crimes he records. Most notable for: Is it a thriller? Is it a mystery? Is it a scathing indictment on the American public’s obsession with real-life violence? It seems to be all of the above, plus Jake Gyllenhaal in what might be his best performance since Brokeback Mountain and Prince of Persia. Unqualified critical observation: I have no qualms whatsoever about this movie’s message on modern journalism, except that there seems to be far more cocaine than I experience in my day-to-day professional life. It is shot in a very low-tech, minimalist fashion, emphasizing the subject material and the slow but steady degradation of not only our hero but also of our industry.
