PENSACOLA MAGAZINE

Editor’s note Last year we decided to move our annual Pensacola Magazine Weddings edition to April. As the pandemic continued through late 2020 and early 2021, we wondered how many people were still getting married. Would we have enough content? How were the wedding vendors holding up? As we started to explore those topics, we found that the world of weddings in Pensacola is still going strong, but the weddings themselves have been changed considerably. Sure, they are smaller and socially distanced, as one would expect in such times. The interesting thing I found, though, is that they are also so much more personal, unique, intimate and thoughtful. Perhaps some of this is from necessity, but I like to think that the last year, with all of it’s pain and loneliness, has taught us a little bit about what is truly important—our relationships with people—friends, family and community. The trends that we are seeing in the last year are all about the couple—out with the old staid ideas of what a wedding should be and in with the idea of what a wedding can be. Want to wear a vintage red dress down the aisle? Go for it. Want to incorporate your shared love of kangaroos into your centerpieces? Awesome! Walk the aisle together? Why not? Your wedding, much like your life, is yours to do

with as you please. Make it personal, make it meaningful and make it memorable. Above all— make it fun! Fun. Joyful. Personal. These are the qualities we also loved about our winning cover photo. Paige and Geoff are clearly having a great time at their wedding and their cover photo captures that perfectly. It also captures the essence of a downtown wedding with a European vibe in the alleyway strung with café lights, the tall Italian cypress in the background and the revived old buildings along Palafox. Little did we know, their wedding also incorporated some very personal elements as well. Read all about it on page 12. Throughout this issue, you’ll also find great advice on current trends, a touching engagement story, advice on navigating money before and after marriage, and some great mocktail recipes for your non-drinking friends and family. You’ll also find a Pensacola inspired photo shoot with a local elopement theme that is sure to give you some great ideas for planning your own uniquely you, uniquely Pensacola wedding. As always, I hope you enjoy the issue. Cheers,

Weddings 2021 COVER CONTEST WINNER Paige + Geoff Joseph by PS Cobia Photography We always sort of knew of each other, but we officially met downtown one night at Intermission. Geoff acted like he knew me and asked how I had been. I played along and said, “It’s been a while.” We got engaged during quarantine on April 9, 2020. I had just had a long shift at the hospital so I was lying on the couch and we were talking about how much we loved our new house we had just purchased together. He got up to go get me something and came back to sneak up on me and kneel down next to the couch. We got married at Odd Colony Brewing Company. My brother, Brett Schweigert, is one of the owners there. We went with the theme of the brewery, industrial vibes, but added some bohemian flare. My favorite aspect of the wedding was having my brother, Nate, as the officiant. I think everyone can agree that he absolutely made our wedding day. His emotion, honesty and love for us, and for our love, permeated throughout the alleyway where the ceremony took place. I still tear up just thinking about it. We had always talked about how our wedding was going to have to be huge because of both of our large families and friend groups, so I would have to say COVID definitely affected our wedding. We had to decide if we wanted to wait for the big wedding we had always talked about or if we wanted to move forward during the uncertain times with a much smaller wedding. We decided that we both loved a more intimate setting and that the people that love us would understand the tough decisions we had to make. The total number of guests ended up being around sixty-five people.

A lot of our vendors we used were our friends that of course were all amazing to work with. Our honeymoon was incredible! We flew out to Salt Lake City, Utah and rented a Sprinter van through a website called RV share—it’s basically like an Airbnb for campers/vans. We took the van all over Utah, hitting each of the Mighty Five National Parks. We roughed it and made the best of each day. It was truly the best trip of our lives. Now we talk about living out of a van one day!

WEDDINGS 2021

RUNNERS UP Deon + Darrian Glover by Phocus Photography (From Deon) Darrian and I both met at high school in Spanish class. She was a sophomore and I was a junior. We were classroom friends, but we never spoke after class. She had a slight crush on me (she was mesmerized by my jokes). After we both graduated, we remained connected through social media. Seven years after we graduated high school, I made the smoothest move and DM’d Darrian on Instagram. I told her, “The fact that you love God is truly amazing to me. Keep glowing.” I was hoping and praying that she responded to that message, and when she did, I knew that I had to take my shot. Again, she was mesmerized by my jokes and charm, and I was amazed by her beauty and overall spirit. I was living in Orlando at the time and she was in Pensacola. The idea of a long distance relationship was on my mind, but after just talking for about a week everyday on FaceTime, I knew that she was the one. (From Darrian) Deon proposed at the beginning of 2020. He proposed at the same place we had our first “real date,” which was at the beach in Orange Beach,

Alabama. He actually surprised me by having my parents and sister and his parents there at the proposal. It was great because it was the first time I met his dad who flew all the way from Chicago the day before. It was such a great moment to have our families together on this special day. Having everyone that we love dearly at the proposal made it even more special. My all-time favorite moment from the wedding was when my dad walked me down the aisle. He also officiated our wedding as well. Being a part of the ceremony, my dad passed down a mantle that had descriptions of a godly husband on it, and my dad and mom wrapped it around Deon. My husband had absolutely no idea this was going to happen. It was so special! On January 9, 2021, we got married at the beautiful Sowell Farms. The theme was Rustic Elegance. I rode into the ceremony in a white Cinderella carriage pulled by a beautiful white stallion, and my husband was able to ride in a red 1957 Chevy Bel Air. The normal way of planning a wedding became completely non-traditional. From wearing masks and having limited tryons at our bridal fittings to having Zoom call consultations with vendors, the challenges of COVID were crazy. On our wedding day, we encouraged everyone to

My advice for newly engaged couples is to take your time and don’t rush when planning. And no matter what you and your fiancé plan to do... it is your story and there is no right or wrong way to get married. It is the time to do absolutely anything you want to. You will never regret it! Don’t listen to opinions. This is your day.

by Kista Haas Photography Jarrett and I met in high school. I was a junior and he was a senior. We met in a trig class! We both went to UWF and he proposed the day we walked in our graduation ceremony! He is an engineer and I am an OB nurse and photographer. We dated for eight years before he proposed! We got married at Live Oak Plantation and fell in love with the location the first walk through we did. The theme of our wedding was Boho whimsical, but super fun and casual with food trucks. Our favorite aspect of our wedding was the support of friends, family and vendors to make the best out of the cards we were dealt during COVID. Our wedding date was April 4, 2020—days after the complete shut down. We ended up keeping our date and we eloped with our officiant / pastor. It was just us and the pastor due to the amount of people that could gather. This made the moment so intimate and we could not have chosen a better alternative. We decided to reschedule our wedding and we had a wedding and reception with our close friends and family

wear masks and performed temperature checks at the beginning of the ceremony.

We love how nontraditional it was and how it was so unique to us. Our honeymoon was supposed to be in Hawaii, but that was closed so we ended up going to Yosemite National Park and Napa Valley. We left the morning after the wedding, and we absolutely loved it.

Justin + Mason A C OV I D E N G AG E M E N T S TO R Y

Justin had originally planned to propose to Mason on a family trip to the Grand Cayman Islands, but COVID restrictions caused the couple to reschedule four times and eventually cancel all together. Shortly after, Justin found out they would be moving from Texas to Alabama for work. He instantly made the decision to pop the question in Pensacola. Justin planned a small family gathering for both of their families as a cover for their detour. For Justin, it would be an engagement party—as far as Mason knew, it would be a family get together after months of separation. As they drove to Pensacola from Texas, Mason told Justin they were going to make a quick pit stop at a family friend’s house. Once there, Justin brought Mason to the candle lit backyard. He gave Mason a letter he had written and then he got down on one knee and popped the question. Joyfully, Mason said, “Yes!” Local musician John Ripley played piano (in his own beautifully landscaped back yard) and the proposal was perfectly planned by Megan with Megan K. Events—down to the Tiffany blue champagne to match the little blue Tiffany ring box waiting for Mason. Ash Simmons Photography was booked to capture the secret proposal, after which the whole group travelled to Pensacola Beach for portraits of the newly engaged couple. Justin planned multiple other surprises throughout the night including custom tumblers, a romantic dinner and a fully decorated hotel room at the Hilton Pensacola Beach.

WEDDINGS 2021

BACK TO BASICS WITH STYLISH SIMPLICITY by Heidi Travis

If there is one thing that 2020 taught us it’s that when the going gets tough, people get creative.

Though it was a tumultuous year filled with challenges and change, life and love have flourished. We’ve found ways to make it work and it goes to show that when all else is stripped away, the only things that truly matter are the people we love. Nothing comes close. It’s simple, really. When the world gets hectic, we go back to basics. And that trend is reflected in our weddings today. Gone are the days of elaborate, ostentatious pageantry. None of that stifling staid air. Today’s wedding is a breath of fresh air—an intimate, stylish affair of simple elegance. It’s the perfect blend of old and new—without all the clutter. But don’t take our word for it. Here’s what the experts have to say.

THE DRESS While the classic A-line and ballgown never go out of style, simplistic Boho inspired gowns have been in popular demand recently, say Brenda Carraway, owner of Pensacola Bridal Loft and her Bridal Consultant Brandi Meriwether. Gowns with open or low back detailing or slits on the side to “show a little leg” are also very popular. “Most of our brides are still wanting their dream wedding dress for their big day, even if they are having a backyard soiree. They still want to look and feel like a true bride, and they definitely deserve to feel that,” Carraway said. “They have opted for less dress, meaning shorter trains and gowns with less material. All of the trains on any bridal gown can be bustled for easier wear of the gown for the reception,” she said. As for the fabrics, Carraway and Meriwether note that lace will always be the most requested but that designers are now blending lace appliques with crepe and satin fabrics to give some embellishments. And when it comes to bridesmaids, all bets are off. “So many brides are wanting their bridesmaids to both look and feel beautiful, so they are choosing to let their bridal party pick their own gowns. Most brides will choose one color and let their girls pick different styles. But lately, we have even seen blending in a few different shades of colors to coordinate as well,” Carraway said.

THE RING/JEWELRY When it comes to weddings, no other thing so small carries such big importance! For this we turned to Laura Cole, Vice President of Beré Jewelers. “Simplicity is in. We are seeing a surge in minimal designs like solitaires and clean diamond accented bands. The consensus is clear, the trend now is to let that beautiful diamond take center stage and shine.” Matching wedding bands are a sure bet, but Cole says she is seeing a trend in stackables and alternating colored stones as well. She also notes that the diamond ring is the “staple of tradition,” but that the cut of the diamond may vary. “Geometric stones, rough cut diamonds, and salt and pepper diamonds are becoming alternative engagement ring styles,” Cole said. Also, yellow gold is emerging as a popular trend in bridal. Platinum and white gold have been a solid bet for years and continue to hold their place but, according to Cole, yellow gold is starting to surge ahead in popularity. But let’s not forget our grooms now. “Engagement watches” are the thing! “She gets a ring, he gets a watch,” Cole said.

THE FLOWERS

THE GUEST LIST

“A timeless look will always be white and green. The vine Smilax, which has been around for a long time but has come back into trend the last several years and grows in our region is a great way to create large scale design options. The mature vine is hearty and creates a beautiful drape on pole, in ceilings and chandeliers or on mantles and tablescapes,” said Shannon Pallin, Owner of Fiore of Pensacola. Pallin notes that brides are mixing traditional and modern looks these days, for example, white roses with loose greenery placed in a sleek container can take traditional flowers in a new direction. Also, neutrals have been a big trend and a common request in recent years. “Design elements include soft blush tones such as Quicksand roses, natural pampas grasses and bleached preserved ferns, grasses and pods. This look will have some staying power as it has endless possibilities with dried and preserved flowers becoming more readily available,” Pallin said.

THE DÉCOR

Be it due to the current circumstances with COVID-19 or be it a matter of practicality, microweddings are immensely popular now. “Now, Florida venues are back open at 100 percent. Even so, guests are still being cautious and only attending when necessary. For the most part, guests’ counts are between 40-80 people versus 100–175,” Angeles said. Still, it isn’t for everyone and some brides and grooms with larger families worry about leaving people out. Worry not! There is still a way! “A creative way around this was to offer “time slots” if you will. Wedding parties would have “x” number of guests show up for cocktail hour. After cocktail hour was over, they would leave and allow the next group of guests to come for appetizers, and so on,” Angeles said. While she admits it is not an ideal set up, Angeles notes that it does allow couples to keep their guests safe while enabling everyone to attend.

THE VENUE

“Out with the burlap, Boho is the new theme, and I am all for it,” said Lexi Angeles, Special Events Coordinator at the Great Southern Restaurant Group. Angeles says that vintage is in and being incorporated into more weddings. “The first thing I talk to a bride about is her theme. It represents the couple’s personality and the overall tone of the wedding. Vintage items can be easily found at thrift stores for a much lower cost than if you were to purchase new,” Angeles said. But décor can be pricey and it puts undue pressure on the bride to create her dream wedding without breaking the bank. Well, there are creative solutions to this problem. “I have recently started following and talking to a new company called The Wedding Swap. This company created an app that allows brides to buy, sell or trade wedding décor,” Angeles said, “We all know how lost you can get looking through Facebook marketplace searching for specific items—the rabbit hole is real. This app is solely dedicated to wedding décor, which makes it not only easy to search, but so convenient for brides who are on a budget, as well” she said.

Venues that accommodate both indoor and outdoor weddings are currently in demand, but Angeles notes that the biggest impediment to outdoor wedding venues is the unpredictability of mother nature, especially in Florida. Pallin also offers some suggestions. “Local venues that we love right now are 511 and Oyster Bay. The Studer family has really stepped up and made these two venues beautiful, fresh and current in design, form and function,” she said. “As a vendor, we appreciate that they are taking the time to plan and map out the space that works for vendors including tent sizes, covered areas and access to bridal suites and amenities that are not available in many other venues,” Pallin said.

WEDDINGS 2021

THE FOOD

ENTERTAINMENT

With smaller guest counts, more brides are going for a full course plated meal but that’s not to say there aren’t fun alternatives. “One of the most memorable events we have catered had a theme of ‘World Travel’, something we have not had much of for the past year. We watched each guest travel the world, station to station, and eat sushi in Japan, sip margaritas and eat flautas in Mexico, dance the night away and dine on freshly made croquettes in Cuba and fall in love under the Eiffel Tower with sweet chocolate croissants,” Angeles said. So, a themed buffet-style presentation is not out of fashion either. Additionally, some weddings have chosen to showcase themed cocktails. photo by Anneliese Elder “Signature drinks are becoming more popular. In a recent wedding, the bride reached out to a digital artist to create their bar sign for their signature drinks. I have recently become a dog mom and died when I saw they had named one of their drinks after their own doggo, The Winston,” Angeles said.

THE CAKE Multi-tiers are still the trend, though they have gotten smaller, according to Justine GudmunsonMcCain, Chef and owner of Bluejay’s Bakery. “They have gotten smaller as weddings have become more intimate or they are supplemented by additional goodies. It is becoming less common for 5/6 tier wedding cakes to be the norm,” GudmunsonMcCain said. Gudmunson-McCain says they work mostly with buttercream, to ensure all of their cakes taste as good as they look. Fondant and gum-paste are used much more sparingly on an as-needed basis. “For the cake itself, vanilla bean and a fruit photo by Anneliese Elder preserve tend to still be the most popular but we have been getting more and more creative combinations such as lavender cake and lemon curd, coconut cake with pineapple mousse, and strawberry cake with blackberry coconut whipped cream,” she said. But cakes aren’t all! There are always alternatives just a little off the beaten path of tradition. “Typically for an alternative to a traditional cake, we recommend cupcakes as a way to make serving guests easier. We always love a good breakfast spread. We’ve done everything from waffles as the cake and a full toast bar to serve guests,” Gudmunson-McCain said. Even further off the beaten path? Groom cakes! Playfully styled as Yeti coolers, Big Green Eggs, and even armadillos, these fun and tasty treats liven any wedding party. Additionally, Gudmunson-McCain says that they work to accommodate any dietary restriction and can make delicious vegan, gluten free, tree nut free, soy free and any combination of all of the above.

“When meeting with vendors, my best advice is do your research! Some couples break it down by price, and we all know the saying, ‘you get what you pay for,” Angeles said. The main thing is to ask your vendors many questions, she says. “Look at their reviews, Google does not lie. WeddingWire and The Knot are also great tools to use while researching any vendor. Read the contract thoroughly,” she said. If you do choose to go with a DJ, there are some ways to make the experience a good one all around. Angeles offers this bit of advice. “One specific thing, your DJ helps set the tone of your wedding. They are in control of the music played and the announcements made. Treat your DJ well, give them guidelines for specifics you would like and not like, give them a timeline to go by. For those brides that do not have a coordinator, your DJ is the next best thing,” she said. Ultimately, your wedding is a celebration of a fresh new start and of love—love for your husband, wife, family, friends, food, music all while wearing beautiful clothes in lovely surroundings. Whatever you choose, know that there are always plenty of options to suit your taste and budget no matter what the current trends may be—and when in doubt, ask an expert. But either way, just stop a moment and remember this—when it comes to your wedding, there’s no wrong answer because, fortunately, love never goes out of style.

THE TALK FINANCIAL ADVICE FOR NEW COUPLES BY DAKOTA PARKS

Talking about money can be viewed as a taboo topic for a lot of people, but starting the conversation early with clear communication and goals to plan ahead can save a lot of grief down the line. The median age for marriage in the United States is 27.4 for women and 29.5 for men. That means many couples may already have established careers, own their own homes and have their own savings and bank accounts, which makes having a financial conversation before marriage more important than ever. Data shows that money is one of the most common causes of relationship stress and even divorce rates. According to research by the financial firm TD Ameritrade, 41 percent of divorced Gen Xers and 29 percent of Baby Boomers claim they ended their marriage due to disagreements about money. Pensacola Magazine caught up with financial advisors Jacey J. Cosentino and Chesley Allegri from the Radcliff-Schatzman Group at Morgan Stanley to discuss ways for couples to navigate the financial talk before marriage and for new partners approaching the topic of consolidating finances. Both Cosentino and Allegri agree that the best place to start is to get comfortable talking about money and future aspirations: “One of the best things you can do to help ensure the success of your relationship is to get comfortable talking about money,” they explained. “Take the time to respectfully listen to each other’s vision for the future—where you want to live, what type of career you want to pursue, if you want children and how you want to retire. Routinely talk about lifestyle expectations and your financial well-being as a couple or family so that it becomes part of your routine, rather than a hot topic.” Here are some financial planning tips and conversation starting points from Cosentino and Allegri to help new couples maintain a healthy money relationship from the very beginning. ―24―

WHERE TO START If the subject of money is not incorporated early on in a relationship, it can become a point of contention, which makes it nearly impossible to talk about. First, schedule a quarterly money date. Get to know your partner’s money personality: some people are savers, some are spenders and some avoid the topic all together. Next, establish common money goals. Once you know what these goals are, establish how much you are each going to contribute toward your goal every month and stick to it. An equal amount or equal percentage of income is often the easiest way to do this. Lastly, agree on an individual spending limit. This is especially relevant if your finances are merged. To avoid the negative connotation of having to “ask for permission” to spend money from a joint account, agree that any purchases above a set limit must be discussed and agreed upon together.

PROS AND CONS OF MERGING BANK ACCOUNTS Before a couple decides to merge bank accounts, a budget might need to be implemented and agreed upon. It helps to be on the same page as to what should be spent on rent/ mortgage, cars, insurance, eating out, shopping, charity, vacations and so much more. Simply Googling “how to

WEDDINGS 2021

write a budget” will lead you to some great templates to use. Scheduling budget “dates” will also help ensure you have regular discussions and reviews on spending and budgeting. Pros to joint accounts: they can simplify your budget, help make paying shared expenses easier and your partner has immediate access to funds in the event of an emergency. Cons to joint accounts: they can potentially cause tension if partners have significantly different spending habits or income levels, they can reduce privacy and you can be tied to each other’s credit history and debt. Pros for separate accounts: they can give couples a sense of financial independence and autonomy and may encourage more budget discipline with access to a smaller pool of funds. Cons for keeping accounts separate: the responsibility of paying joint expenses and bills can fall on one spouse and tracking spending goals can be more complicated.

INHERITING YOUR SPOUSE’S DEBT Generally speaking, whichever name is attached to the account is the person responsible for repaying it. If it is debt applied for jointly during the marriage, it would usually be the responsibility of both parties. Sometimes when purchasing a home, vacation property, car or boat, it may benefit you to apply jointly or have the person with the higher credit score and sometimes lower debt-to income-ratio apply for the loan to keep interest rates as low as possible.

TO SIGN OR NOT TO SIGN A PRENUP

10 QUESTIONS TO USE AS A STARTING POINT BEFORE TYING THE KNOT OR MAPPING OUT A FINANCIAL PLAN WITH YOUR PARTNER. 1. What are your life goals and dreams? 2. What are some of your earliest money memories (the good and the bad), and how did your family talk about money? 3. What are some of your biggest financial concerns about the next 5-10 years? What about the next 20-25 years? 4. Do you have any outstanding debt or obligations I should know about, and if so, do you have a plan in place to address them? 5. If you were to receive a $1,000 tax refund tomorrow, how would you spend it and why? 6. What are your professional goals? How do you envision balancing career and family? 7. What does your dream retirement look like? Do you even want to retire? 8. If you plan on having children, how do you envision sharing parenting responsibilities and what values do you want to pass on when it comes to money? 9. How do you envision dividing household expenses and who is going to be responsible for paying bills, tracking expenses and managing the budget? 10. If one of you were offered a career opportunity in another city or country, how would we handle?

A prenup, or “prenuptial agreement” is a legal agreement between two parties that outlines exactly which assets belong to whom and what

happens to these assets and any assets that the couple might accumulate together in the event the marriage ends. Prenups get a bad rap. There’s a stigma that prenups are only for the ultra-wealthy and suggest a lack of commitment or confidence in the longevity of a relationship. There are a lot of reasons to believe that a prenup can increase your chance of achieving a happily ever after. It forces you and your partner to discuss finances and address how you will handle certain stressful scenarios together in the future. Divorce is messy and emotional enough—by having the tough conversations up front, you reduce the likelihood that you find yourself in a painful, drawn-out legal battle if things go south. Having a prenup is a very personal choice and you should consult with a legal professional.

CONSULTING A FINANCIAL ADVISOR “Financial planning is one of the most important things any couple should consider having in place,” Cosentino and Allegri said. “One piece of our new client on-boarding is putting together a financial plan for each and every client. Taking 30 minutes to plan for the next 30 years is always a good thing. If the client has debt, making a plan to pay off that debt is an integral part of the financial planning process. Savings goals will be very different for everyone. There is a delicate balance between enjoying today and saving for tomorrow. Many couples have very different opinions and feelings on saving. It is more than just the numbers. Some choose to save aggressively and want to retire by a certain age and others spend more knowing they may need to work longer. It is our job as financial advisors to get to know our clients and have real conversations about their lives and what brings them joy and purpose.”

BREAKING FROM TRADITION by Fiama Mastrangelo

Old wedding rules and superstitions might not carry the same weight they used to—couples are breaking from tradition for

aren’t wearing dresses at all—pantsuits, two-piece garments and rompers are all making their way down the aisle too. Knee-length and midi dresses are also trending amongst non-traditional brides. The rule against wearing white to a wedding? It’s subject to change. Some brides have had their mothers wear white alongside them, as their mothers may have never gotten the opportunity to wear white at their own ceremonies.

The Officiant

their big days to create unique memories and celebrate their special love stories. Off-white dresses, elopements and family officiants are just some of the ways that couples have chosen to break the mold. To paraphrase Billy Idol, “it’s a nice day for an off-white wedding.”

While officiants have historically been figures who are close to the family, some couples are electing to have their actual family members officiate their wedding ceremonies. Having loved ones perform in the wedding ceremony is a special way to include them as they celebrate the newlyweds’ union. Getting ordained in Florida is as simple as completing an online course, contacting the county clerk and getting your license to verify your credentials.

The Color Palette

The Walk

Trend experts from The Knot have noted that there is a greater emphasis on aesthetics as opposed to traditional color palettes that once dictated the overall look of the ceremony and reception. Not quite synonymous with themes, these aesthetics capture the artistic intentions behind wedding planning and design. Aesthetics can range from ethereal to retro and can be as broad or specific as desired (think celestial imagery or glam rock vibes). The color palette hasn’t been completely done away with either—the palette serves to enhance the chosen aesthetic and may include a wider range of colors for the design. Natural hues seem to be taking the [wedding] cake this year, as neutrals and soft varieties of blue, orange and lilac are trending for 2021.

The Venue COVID-19 precautions and smaller budgets may have influenced the rise

of backyard weddings and intimate elopements. Couples who had waited years for their big day threw formality to the wind this past year to tie the knot on their own terms. Living on the Gulf Coast makes for easily accessible elopement spots, as you can say “I do” as the sun sets on Pensacola Beach. A breezy dress, marriage certificate, and an officiant are the only requirements to this laid-back and intimate ceremony.

The Dress The dazzling white gown is not one-size-fits-all. Some brides are choosing to say their vows in colorful or patterned wedding dresses. Blush and ivory-colored dresses are the most popular amongst these nonwhite dresses, but some brides have chosen crimson or black dresses as well. Other brides ―26―

While it has been a long-standing tradition for the bride’s father to walk her down the aisle, mothers, siblings, in-laws and both parents are now being seen sending off the bride-to-be. The only requirement for a send-off is having someone who holds a position of love, guidance and honor in your life to accompany you through one of your biggest celebrations. Blended families might have both the father and the step-father accompany the bride. Another option is to have the bride walk herself down the aisle, even if only for part of the way. Meghan ▲ Here, the Markle walked the majority of bride’s father St. George’s Chapel by herself, serves as the officiant for indicating independence and the wedding strength, before her escort ceremony. met her halfway to continue photo by her walk to the altar. W E D D I N G S + E VE N T S

We d d i n g s + E v e n t s + L o v e ▲ This couple used paper airplanes as a send-off instead of traditional rice-throwing. photo by Taylor Kaderly

The Send-off The tradition of wedding send-offs originates from the Roman empire, in which grains symbolized fertility for the newlyweds. While the urban legend that rice can be bad for birds has been proven to be untrue, some venues still prohibit the throwing of rice due to safety hazards and pest control. As such, many couples have come up with special alternatives that capture their personalities and aesthetic more accurately. Biodegradable glitter and confetti are popular options, as well as blowing bubbles and tossing flower petals. Other send-off options include waving sparklers and ringing wedding bells. One local couple had a paper plane send-off at their wedding for an unforgettable experience. While traditions may hold a special place in our hearts, they may not be the best fit for every love story. Diverse families and couples may want to create new traditions that include their unique circumstances and celebrate what makes them unique. Moves for sustainable weddings and smaller budgets have also accounted for a change in the way we celebrate weddings. Whatever your stance on traditions is, your big day is meant to be a chance to celebrate your love with the people you love, and the sky is the limit when it comes to crafting your personalized experience. 

Mocktails are a perfect way to offer non-drinkers a delightfully refreshing and aesthetically pleasing way to sip the night away in style.

JUST THE TWO OF US Eloping Locally

Eloping often conjures an image of running off to some exotic location or heading down to the local courthouse. However, there is no need to run off or settle for a fluorescent-lit ceremony. Local elopements can be just as epic as traditional weddings, and with a little planning, they can be filled with personal touches, intimate moments and a lot of local community vibes. Downtown Pensacola is home to many popular wedding venues that offer interesting history and unique architecture. Pick a spot that speaks to you and plan the private wedding of your dreams. »

EFFORTLESS

ELEGANCE While eloping is an age old idea, elopement attire can be as modern as you’d like. Brittini’s look is simple—a sleek silk gown paired with eclectic earrings and a messy pony. DJ’s all-white suit and loafer slides make a bold statement.

ENDLESS ELOPEMENT BACKDROPS Built in 1911, Pensacola Little Theatre was originally two properties with a courtyard in between. The exposed brick interior was once an outdoor wall, which gives the space a unique historical feel and offers plenty of distinct photo opportunities.

EXPLORE YOUR CITY No matter what location you choose for your elopement, make sure you have time for an adventurous photo session. Adventures and photo ops can be hiding in unusual places—cozy up under museum arches for a makeout sesh or sneak on top of a parking garage to catch the sunset. Snapping portraits at some of your favorite local places tells the story of the two of you: where you met, where you play, where you fell in love.
