Confusing choices Like vhs vs beta back in the day. For now, we’re liking Z-WAVE. It has the most widely accepted support system. ZigBee has a narrow offing with a few cable companies. Bluetooth is limited to on-site control. Wifi works great, except for battery powered devices like door locks. Wifi has larger current draw causing more limitation on battery life.

Copper Creek offers most competitive priced Z-WAVE in two distinct styles deadbolts

Kwikset Smartcode is also Z-WAVE and has become standard nationally on some production home builders. The smartkey is an added bonus as well as Microban antimicrobial protection standard on satin nickel finishes. Soon to offer deadbolt with built-in WiFi. Battery life may be questionable

Schlage offers a deadbolt with a plug-in WiFi adapter that must be purchased separately. Extra cost, but going around WiFi high-current demand. Soon to have built in WiFi and again the battery life may be questionable. We know in the past, Wifi has been unable to compete with Z-Wave technology

WELCOME

to the 2020 Parade of Homes

On behalf of the Board of Directors of the Home Builders Association (HBA), it is my pleasure to welcome you to the Parade of Homes. As you can imagine, the COVID-19 pandemic has been challenging for everyone. We moved the Parade of Homes date to September, and this had impacted the number of entries we have for this year’s Parade of Homes. However, we are very pleased that this community event is taking place, especially since this is our 62nd year. While touring the Parade of Homes, we ask that you maintain a distance of at least six feet, wear face coverings and clean your hands frequently. What are we seeing in the housing industry across the nation? According to the National Association of Homes Builders, consumers continue to desire smaller homes, not only in overall square footage, but also the number of features, such as bedrooms and bathrooms. This four-year downward trend has led to the smallest average home size since 2011 at 2,520 square feet — only 20 square feet above the average in 2007, the pre-recession peak. The percentage of homes incorporating four-plus bedrooms, three-plus full bathrooms and three-plus car garages have also dropped to levels not seen since 2012. “This points to an industry trying to meet the demands of the entrylevel home buyer,” said Rose Quint, NAHB assistant vice president of survey research. “Builders are struggling to meet these demands, however, because of factors such as restrictive zoning regulations and with the price of a new lot in 2019 averaging $57,000.” What is interesting is that this coincides with what we are seeing in Northwest Florida. Land prices have skyrocketed, the hidden costs of housing with regulations and fees have made it harder for first-time home buyers to obtain homeownership. This is why the Home Builders Association fights against regulations and fees that add to the cost of housing but does nothing to protect the health, safety and welfare of home buyers. In terms of cutting-edge technology and features, make sure you see the HBA’s American Dream Home, which is a Natural Gas Advantage Elite Home, built by Westerheim Properties, in East Pensacola Heights, off Scenic Hwy. This is the first time in many years the

Dream Home has been built in the City of Pensacola on an infill lot. The Dream Home’s floor plan is designed with open living areas that are hospitable to indoor and outdoor entertaining. The Dream Home is built on a narrow lot but feels very spacious for its 2,342 square-feet, four bedrooms and 3 bathrooms including a roomy master bath. What’s unique about this home is its detached cabana area complete with an outdoor kitchen and half bath. I am very thankful to Thomas Westerheim for building this beautiful home for the HBA. This is the third time Thomas has built the Dream Home and we are certainly appreciative of his efforts. Also, we could not do this project without the help and support of our Dream Home Donors, and our major partner in Pensacola Energy. Pensacola Energy Marketing Manager Jill Grove and her team did a remarkable job. Make sure you view the Dream Home Donors list and if you see something you like in the Dream Home, contact one of the donors. I am sure they can be of service. If you’re in the market for a new home, the Parade of Homes will afford you the opportunity to see homes of all shapes and sizes complete with valued amenities. I encourage you to visit the 36 homes scattered throughout Escambia and Santa Rosa counties. Special thanks the home builders who have entered homes into the Parade including Samuel Stevens & Associates, Henry Company Homes, Breland Homes Coastal, Truland Homes, Encore Homes by ParsCo, Celebrity Home Builders Inc., Adams Homes Northwest FL, D.R. Horton, Flynn Built, Timberland Contractors, Acorn Fine Homes The Parade of Homes is brought to you by the HBA, Westerheim Properties, Pensacola Energy, Ballinger Publishing, Pensacola Magazine, WEAR TV 3, COX, Cat Country 98.7 and News Radio 1620. This year’s Parade is set for September 12-20, with weekend hours from 12 p.m. – 6 p.m., and weekdays 3 p.m. – 6 p.m. In closing, there’s never been a better time to buy a home with historically low interest rates. Whether you are a potential home buyer or looking to build a home, the Parade of Homes has something for everyone. For more information go to www.paradeofhomespensacola.com. Editor’s Note September. For many, it is the harbinger of fall, but for the Florida panhandle, it’s just another month of summer with more responsibilities. As if this year hasn’t been strange enough, September finds us sending kids, teachers and administrators into uncertain territory. No matter your stance on the subject, I think we can agree that we wish them all a healthy and productive school year. So, let’s remember to show a little grace to everyone this month. It’s going to be tough enough and we need to support one another as much as we can. Staying home. That’s been the theme this year—from quarantine and lockdowns to virtual school and remote work, home has become our sanctuary more than ever in 2020. Fitting that we have once again partnered with the Home Builders Association of Northwest Florida for their annual Parade of Homes. We are excited to bring you the official directory, which features dozens of expertly built homes that are open for the public to tour. From September 12 through 20, attendees can tour a variety of floorplans

and see the latest in amenities and design products. Whether you are looking for a new home or just looking for inspiration, you’re sure to find plenty to love. While we are staying home a lot these days, it’s more important than ever to get outside as much as possible. Reconnecting with nature is a wonderful way to destress and get some perspective when times are difficult. For me, nature never fails to remind me that all the little things I spend my days worrying about are just that—little things. In the grand scheme of things, they really don’t matter much. With that in mind, we’ve put together some great articles on how to enjoy the great outdoors locally. From the best places to glamp to the coolest panhandle springs and from scallop diving to reef snorkeling, we’ve got something for everyone’s outdoor taste. We hope you enjoy the issue and we sincerely hope you and your loved ones stay safe and healthy.

I

t is a given how devastating Covid-19 has been. I watch the news at night and am horrified at the stories of families and their losses. For the longest time I didn’t even know anyone who knew anyone who tested positive. And now, it’s everywhere. My sister, niece, and nephew are all healthcare professionals, so we have been hearing tragic details about the cases. It took a whole different meaning when my mother came down with it. She would kill me if I printed her age but I did write about her awesome 80th birthday party a few years ago. If you believed everything you hear on the news, you would have been convinced that she was surely doomed. And while she was very ill, she beat it. There is something to be said for staying fit, eating healthy foods and exercising for your entire life. It has to help. So, thank God, she tested again last week and it came back negative.

The effect on business and personal income is just too staggering to process. And now they are speculating about college football season being canceled? Say it aint so! There are plenty of activities that I enjoy but could sacrifice if I had to. College football does not fall into this category. I have tried to find something light about the whole situation that will at least make us laugh for a bit. I think I found it, though it was anything but humorous in the beginning. I have one daughter and she gives me joy beyond measure, usually. She came home to Pensacola a year ago after being away and working in New York and then Miami for more than 10 years. As a parent, isn’t this what we all hope for? You want your little birds to fly, but my goodness, it is so wonderful when they realize their hometown has grown up, or at least is on the way, and they actually WANT to come back here to live and work. Having her around is a blessing. Being able to drive five minutes to see her versus a long plane trip and cab ride makes me feel all is right with the world.

more romantic than walking down the aisle while “Love Me Tender” is sung by an Elvis impersonator? This was topped only by exiting the scene of the crime to “Viva Las Vegas.” I didn’t know whether to laugh or to cry. My beautiful daughter in her stunning gown that matched the lemay of Elvis’s white jumpsuit.

Well, not quite. As she is the only daughter, I have always had visions of what her wedding would look like. This is a mother’s prerogative. How many times have I pictured her walking down the aisle of our beautiful church where she was raised? The magnificent pipe organ in all its glory filling the sanctuary with chords of fanfare for the momentous occasion. The pastor would be upfront waiting, beaming with joy. The groom would enter, knowing he was the luckiest man in the world. All of our friends and family would be there to share the excitement and magic of the union. Flowers everywhere. Beautiful reception with music and food and wine and a tiered cake. Reality set in. Nothing says motherhood like choking on the plans you had for your child. My daughter is not an ungrateful woman. She is loving and appreciative and strong – and not always the most patient of people. She recently became engaged – so far so good in the story – but realized the challenges of planning a wedding during Covid. Mom’s dreams of the wedding were quickly flushed down ye royal toilet and a new plan took shape. Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas is lovely in August. The simulated garden courtyard looks almost like an authentic Roman villa and I must say that nothing is held back when you select the deluxe wedding package. She did make one concession and did agree to a lovely wedding gown. But I still wake up thinking about my plan for traditional bridal music and how it could have morphed into Elvis Presley. Yes, what could possibly be

Should you be envisioning something similar for yourself or your child who is suffering from temporary delusion, you need to be aware that the deluxe package does give you options for entertainment. They could have selected Cher, Madonna or Wayne Newton, but my precious one exercised her usual tasteful judgement and said Madonna wailing “Like a Virgin”, Cher singing “I Got You Babe” or Wayne Newton’s “Danke Schoen” just didn’t have the same impact. On that we agree. Weddings should be memorable, and this one exceeded all expectations in that department. Who knows? When a vaccine becomes available and we are comfortable in crowds again I may at least get a reception out of this. Without Elvis.

A Labor of Love: The Charles Fennell

Gonzalez IV Casino Beach Snorkeling Reef by Heidi Travis The Gulf of Mexico is home to an astonishing 15,420 species of sea creatures. From grouper to manta rays, to five different types of sea turtles, it is a thriving ecosystem rich in biodiversity and it’s right outside our doors. Famous for its sugar sands and blue-green waters, the Emerald coast draws people far and wide to its shores. According to the Ocean Conservancy, “Florida’s ocean and coastal environment drives the economy and culture of the state, making it a world-renowned destination.” 92 Pensacola Magazine

Yet, this doesn’t come without its challenges. Coexisting with nature is not always simple, especially when trying to strike the balance between what’s good for the economy versus the ecology. But it doesn’t have to be this way. The truth is that there are ways to get the best of both worlds. Such is the case with the newly installed Charles Fennell Gonzalez, IV, Casino Beach Snorkeling Reef, the latest in a series of installations along the Pensacola Beach coast that’s open to the public for recreation. The project

We have a very deepseated trust in each other and each other’s abilities. We’re the only ones we can depend on,” Ghio said. has been in the works since 2015 and was made possible through a $59,500 grant awarded by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission through funds administered by the Federal Aid in Sportfish Restoration. It is located 150 feet east of the Casino Beach Swimming Area and made of concrete and limestone rock reef disks that are bolted to a piling that is jetted into the seafloor. The project is the brainchild of Executive Director of the Santa Rosa County Authority, Paolo Ghio, and the Escambia County Marine Resources Division Manager, Robert Turpin. Both EPA certified dive masters, licensed boat captains, and ocean enthusiasts, the pair have been working together for decades to educate the public and to safeguard our waters. “When it comes to the Gulf, we are pretty much married to the hip. We dive together.

“So, we said why don’t we look at broadening this incredible other world that is underneath the waves of the Gulf to people who are less trained than we are. To people who want to experience what the Gulf is about but would rather just do it with a snorkel,” he said. “So, let’s introduce them to the Gulf by way of a snorkeling reef. And that was the start of putting a snorkeling reef in proximity of Casino Beach.” Ghio and Turpin said that the location is ideal given its proximity to the area’s most popular beach, Casino Beach, and to the numerous hotels and condominiums surrounding it. The reef ’s accessibility will naturally facilitate a greater opportunity for community engagement. “We’ve been blessed with a lot of richness in the upper Gulf.

would attract fish and create an ecosystem that was going to benefit the fish and the marine life but that was also going to give anglers an opportunity to fish right there in their back yard.”

None of us ever imagined that he’d never get to see it. That he’d never be able to dive on it. So how else do we get him to be part of it than to name it after him? He will forever be with us every time we go out there and we dive on it. The sea life is so abundant! Both reef fish and pelagics. But as the name indicates, a reef fish needs a reef in order to house itself in, “ Ghio said. “The one element that we don’t have compared to, say, Californian coasts, is we don’t have a natural reef. For the last 20 years, Turpin and I have been deploying materials that weren’t going to decompose or corrode into oblivion in the Gulf within proximity to the shoreline

Artificial reefs can be a good compromise for maintaining the balance between the economic and ecological effects of tourism. While coral reefs often suffer adverse effects of increased traffic due to inexperienced or novice divers, artificial reefs provide shelter for sea life at little risk. According to Turpin, snorkeling reefs in Escambia and other Florida counties have attracted numerous species of fish, invertebrates and marine turtles. Species such as damselfish, angelfish, butterflyfish, octopuses, crabs and shrimp are the most common invertebrates that snorkelers may encounter in their explorations. “It’s taken decades to establish that and also the partnership with agencies like FWC and DEP and national marine fisheries to get permits and, in turn, give them the data that we glean from it so that other communities, like ours, that want to embark on an artificial reef program don’t have to reinvent the wheel,” Ghio said. “They can take our data and apply it to our environment. So, it’s a very symbiotic relationship that we’ve developed with inter-agencies but more especially with the Gulf.”

The Charles Fennell Gonzalez, IV, Casino Beach Snorkeling Reef is a labor of love – of love for our oceans, the lives within them, and for the dear friend for which it was named. Gonzalez was in charge of the geographical services for Santa Rosa county and worked closely with Ghio on many projects over the years. “When we started talking about the reef, aw man, he was so excited about it! He just loved anything that was water. To him, it was nothing to go do a 14-hour round trip just to go catch a few waves that were epic,” Ghio continued. “Charlie was smooth. He was intense and precise. He was laid back. You never saw him get

flustered or excited. Charlie had a finesse about the way he dealt with things. He was like the Gulf on a calm day. “ “None of us ever imagined that he’d never get to see it. That he’d never be able to dive on it. So how else do we get him to be part of it than to name it after him? He will forever be with us every time we go out there and we dive on it,” he said. “For all the thousands of people who are either lovers, snorkelers or experienced snorkelers who go out there and enjoy this reef, Charlie’s going to get one hell of a kick out of this.”

Glamping Across the Panhandle

by Dakota Parks

In our fast-paced world, sometimes it’s hard to find the time to breathe, disconnect from our phones and computers and smell the pine trees and crackling campfire logs. Camping has always been a summertime staple, but for many the cost of purchasing gear, setting up camp and waking up to an aching back is a turn off. Glamping offers a luxurious solution to many of these woes allowing people to connect with nature and keep their household comforts. Plus, if you prefer primitive tent camping, there’s room for you too! There is no need to settle or argue about the choice of classic camping or fancy glamping. You can pack up your favorite camping gear while your friends or family members camp out next door to you in a cabin, cottage, tiny house or decked out glamping tent, then come together to enjoy the rivers, lakes, woods and beaches around you. Both camping and glamping are also great weekend getaways that still abide by the recommended social distancing guidelines during the COVID-19 pandemic.

live in relatively shallow seagrass areas of the Gulf and its bays, particularly where freshwater rivers meet the Gulf and create the perfect climate for scallops to grow. Their shallow habitats make scalloping a fun and relatively safe family adventure that can be done fromshore or by boat. All you need are your snorkels, masks, saltwater fishing licenses, a mesh bag or net and a diver down flag. We spoke with Ryan Gandy, a researcher who oversees the shellfish research section for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Research Institute. A scallop catch from St. Joseph Bay How did commercial scalloping come to be prohibited? In the early 1990s, there was a commercial fishery operating for scallops, but the population declined severely, and the fishery was shut down. Since that point, as populations have recovered, we have opened and expanded recreational scallop fishing – primarily in the Big Bend area. In recent years, we’ve been able to increase either the amount of time or the area allowed for recreational scalloping. Tell me about the life cycle of a scallop. This is the thing about scallops – and one of the things you have to remember – they are not your traditional fishery. Many fish classes have multiple generations of fish, but scallops are an annual crop. Scallops live about 18 months. They spawn in fall and early winter. Those larvae will set on the bottom and grow up. They have only one year to where they’re ready to spawn again. And that’s it. Once that spawning population is done, you don’t have other tiers of spawning populations. So that creates a highly variable population from year to year. A great example is St. Joe’s Bay. It was kind of puttering along. We had decent populations there, but suddenly, they went from say six scallops, in a transect area to 66. So, basically an order of magnitude higher in one season. Then this season they dropped back down to where they had been before. They can have high variability. They are on about

a five to seven-year cycle. After several years of good numbers, the population starts climbing for four or five years and then it hits the bottom again. What will happen in that period are some good environmental conditions that may push all the larvae into a retaining area. They are pelagic larvae, so for a couple weeks they’re up in the water column getting dispersed by currents and tides and winds. What happens is you can have scallops that are spawned in one county that end up in another county, and that’s how you’ll see high differences from one area to the other. So that all leads to the high variability with scallops from year to year. This is a natural product – a naturally occurring resource. Given its life history, it can make it so that you can’t always go out there and get a limit just because the population is not there. That doesn’t always mean that next year is not going to be a good year because scallops are highly fecund. They have lots of babies. They are a hermaphrodite. It’s not good for them to self-fertilize. But being able to spawn both types of gametes gives them higher productivity. With other species, you might have too many males in the population or too many females in Harvesting bay scallops

100 Pensacola Magazine

the population. With scallops, you don’t have that issue. And with the volume that they can produce, as long as the larvae are retained in the area that they’re spawned and don’t get blown off shore, you can go from what appears to be no scallops in an area to a very good year the next year. Most scallops die naturally in the winter following their spawning. They’re kind of a live fast, die young species. We have that with a lot of invertebrates. They rely on a high amount of reproduction. Scallops, crabs and shrimp are kind of the potato chips of the sea – everything likes to eat them.

Counting and sorting scallops

How do other sea creatures eat them? Scallop shells are very weak. If a stone crab grabs one, they can just crack them. If a blue crab gets it, it may crack the shell, or it may try to pick at it until it opens it up and gets to it. With rays, they suck the scallop in and crush it inside the plates in their mouth and then they pull out the good stuff and spit the shells out. Scallops have unique eyes—30-40 each. What can you tell me about them? You’ll see the blue eyes along the outside edge of the shell. They are pretty much for light sensing. When a shadow goes over them, they’ll try to close up or shoot away. When they clasp their shells together, the water will shoot out like a jet and that’s how they can propel a little further away. It’s not really designed for getting away from things that are pretty quick like stingrays or people, but if a big horse conch or a stone crab came around, they can clap that valve together and have a chance to get far enough away. What advice do you give recreational scuba divers going out to scallop for the first time? Scallops are directly tied to their habitat – seagrass. Divers should be very careful of how much scarring they do to the seagrass because without the seagrass, the scallops don’t have anything to set to. We want to make sure that as the population increases and people are using the resource more that they are also protecting it. That’s a very simple way – turning your motor up, having good charts. That kind of thing.

A scuba diver monitoring a scallop population

Also, we do want to try to preserve the population throughout the season, so if you’re not going to eat the scallops or you’re just out there to collect them and pick them up, try to manage what you take so that you’re not taking more than what you’re going to eat. Other than that, just have fun and enjoy all the other critters you see out there, too. There’s a lot to see on the scallop floor once you get out there. JULY '20

The

Panhandle F

Springs WRITTEN + PHOTOGRAPHED BY SEAN MULLINS

ROM A FLORIDA MAN’S PERSPECTIVE, there’s nothing more Floridian than being engulfed by the pure beauty that a Florida natural spring can offer—surrounded by blues and greens that can leave you truly speechless. While you’ll find every spring’s average water temperature around 72 degrees, it’s incredibly refreshing, especially during the summer heat. Some of the springs can be a short distance from a parking lot or more of an adventure—accessible via a paddle upstream. All in all, the springs in the Panhandle are natural gems which must be protected and respected so we can continue to enjoy their clear, cool beauty.

MORRISON SPRING Walton County With a trunk of a tree laying smack on top of this gorgeous spring, it’s one of my favorites. Located right off Interstate 10, you can see the head of the spring just below that tree trunk which is the passage to its cave system. Morrison is also one of the most finicky springs and the water may not be clear if the river level is too high, but when the water is crystal clear, it’s definitely a sight to behold. Morrison is a very accessible spring with parking, restrooms, and a few benches for you to munch on your lunch. JULY '20

CYPRESS SPRINGS Washington County As soon as you’re tired of paddling down Holmes Creek, you’ll find yourself at Cypress Springs. There are no restrooms or picnic tables here, but you can park your kayak, canoe or paddleboard right beside the spring. Cypress is a magnitude two spring which flows 89 million gallons of water per day. You can find submerged trees, mullet swimming all about, and some wild humans jumping from a tree swing. 104 Pensacola Magazine

SPRINGS ON THE ECOFINA Washington + Bay County Looking to escape and find yourself surrounded by a few springs? Say no more and you can find yourself walking distance from a few magical swimming holes— Pitts Springs, Sylvan Springs and Williford Springs. All three have their own unique landscape and are surrounded by gorgeous palm trees and lush vegetation. You can easily spend the entire day relaxing in one of these springs and letting your cares slip away while the world spins round.

PONCE DE LEON SPRINGS STATE PARK Holmes County If you have a few little ones, this is the perfect spring for you. You can find a cute concrete diving board, easily accessible steps, and an abundance of wooden picnic tables. My favorite part of the spring is it’s spring run which starts from the little bridge and extends all the way to the beginning of the river. Once you reach Sandy Creek, you’ll begin to see the waters change from clear to brackish. All the park rangers there are extremely nice and won’t hesitate to answer any questions or concerns.

Community News Senior Chill Out receives record number of ACs and monetary donations for fourth year in a row Despite the dawn till dusk rain in Northwest Florida on Friday, July 24—and the ongoing global pandemic—Council on Aging of West Florida received a record number of donations for its 2020 Senior Chill Out. Held in partnership with WEAR ABC 3, Cat Country 98.7 and Lowe’s Home Improvement stores, the single-day solicitation of ACs, fans and cash will enable the senior services agency to distribute tangible relief to hundreds of senior adults suffering in the stifling Florida heat. Five Lowe’s locations across Escambia and Santa Rosa counties accepted donations totaling 353 ACs and $23,146,beating last year’s record of 348 ACs and $20,674. The agency also received 295 fans.

This summer has been especially trying for the senior adult population in Northwest Florida, with stifling heat and humidity and the threat of a global pandemic forcing many elders to remain in their homes with dangerously high temperatures. This recipe for disaster compelled Council on Aging of West Florida and its partners to move forward with this vital fundraiser. “Between the rain, the pandemic, and the economic downturn, we honestly weren’t sure how many seniors we’d be able to help this year,” said John Clark, President/CEO of Council on Aging. “But we should’ve never doubted the generosity of Escambia and Santa Rosa counties. Dear Friends of Santa Rosa Kids’ House, As you know, 2020 has been a difficult year for all. The COVID-19 pandemic has been a cause for a weakened economy, unprecedented unemployment, heightened stressors, and much more that attacks our humanity. While we have all done our best to follow guidelines, help the needy, feed the hungry, and take care of our own families, these past several months have seen a rise in child abuse. The severity of the cases has increased; children are staying home more, having increased access to internet and are vulnerable to predators, especially when parents are not able to monitor use. The Santa Rosa Kids’ House has remained open and on call for all new child abuse cases, and we need your help now more than ever. In 2020, we have served 425 children with advocacy, interviews, medical exams, and therapy. While our expenses have remained the same, our ability to raise funds has suffered. Due to social distancing and all efforts to slow the spread of the virus, we have had to cancel this year’s fundraisers, leaving us in a difficult position. Our opportunities for businesses to advertise in our events have decreased due to the virus, so we have created new opportunities for businesses to participate in advertising through different levels.

UWF Researchers Use Psychology to Evaluate Navy’s Parachute Training by Gina Castro photos by Garrett Hallbauer

Psychology has a diverse range of careers. Working in mental health is just one of the many careers in psychology. In fact, industrialorganizational (IO) psychology is predicted to be one of the fastest-growing psychology fields between 2018 and 2028. IO psychology studies workplace behavior. Many IO psychologists work in research or positions dealing with worker productivity, employee training, assessment and human resources. The U.S. Department of Labor reported that the median annual salary for IO psychologists was $97,260 in 2018.

University of West Florida researchers are using IO psychology to help the U.S. Navy evaluate parachute training devices for its pilots and other personnel. Dr. Steven Kass, professor in the Department of Psychology, and Dr. Valerie Morganson, associate professor in the Department of Psychology, are leading the project. Students from UWF’s top ranking Master’s in I-O Psychology Program are helping the professors. “When people think of psychology, they think of somebody sitting on a couch and talking about their problems,” Dr. Morganson said. “But IO psychology and human factors psychology are much more applied and very practical fields with high employability.” For this project, the researchers are identifying the knowledge, skills and abilities parachute training requires. Then the researchers will use that information to determine which of the parachute simulations is best for the Navy and the

JULY '20

researchers will send back recommendations to improve overall parachute training. “Dr. Morganson’s expertise is industrial organizational psychology, and mine is in human factors psychology. They’re both related because they’re workplace psychology. With that kind of combination, we did things like a cognitive task analysis so that we can figure out what’s necessary to teach,” Dr. Kass explained. “We have to go through the process and see what people are thinking about when they’re doing those tasks, what are the actual behaviors that they have to engage in and the decisions that they make.” The Navy uses these simulators after the trainees have learned about ejecting or bailing out a plane due to emergencies. The simulation is a way for the Navy to practice parachute descent procedure and gain experience with solving different types of parachute malfunctions. IO psychology graduate students, Cayla Hartley, Kenzie Hurley and Kaylin Strong, setting up the SoarTech Skyfall parachute simulator.

120 NWFL’s Business Climate

The Navy has been using an older virtual reality parachute descent trainer. The Navy more recently invested in research and development of a technology from Soar Technology Inc., which UWF will evaluate.

UWF researchers are observing SoarTech’s two types of parachute simulators: Skyfall and Skyfall VR.

Dr. Steven Kass, professor in the Department of Psychology, and Dr. Valerie Morganson, associate professor in the Department of Psychology, are evaluating U.S. Navy parachute training devices.

SoarTech has two types of simulators: Skyfall and Skyfall VR. Skyfall uses three large screens. The two screens in front of the participant show the ground and surrounding scene. The screen above shows the parachute. Skyfall VR uses 3-D virtual reality goggles. The UWF professors have access to SoarTech simulators on the University’s Pensacola Campus. Their lab features parachute riggings, harnesses and other equipment. Because of COVID-19, the experiment had to be adjusted. Originally, the researchers planned to collect data from real trainers and trainees on base, but COVID-19 complicated that plan. Fortunately, Kass and Morganson were able to identify the knowledge, skills and abilities parachute training requires from real trainers and trainees on base. The project is now moving forward into a second phase, pending stakeholder approval. Kass and Morganson are using observations to provide feedback to the Navy and Soar Tech, which will lead to training and equipment modifications. The findings will help personnel to complete the tasks required to land safely. Additionally, the experimenters

are now proposing to collect human subjects data to compare the simulators at the UWF Campus to compare the trainers from a student perspective. This simulation will be a part of the Navy’s Aviation Survival Training Centers, so UWF’s research could potentially save servicemembers’ lives. Kass and Morganson interviewed several pilots, including a Blue Angels pilot, who utilized their parachute training to survive a plane crash. “It’s reassuring to know that the training the pilots went through with the Navy helped them safely land following ejection from their aircraft,” Kass said. “It’s nice to know we’re going to be a part of that project.” Cayla Hartley, Kenzie Hurley and Kaylin Strong, IO psychology graduate students, have been assisting the professors with this project. They expressed how excited they are about using their knowledge in IO psychology in the real world. “We’re in the human factors class with Dr. Kass, and we’re able to take what we learn in that class and apply it to what we’re observing with the simulator,” Hurley said. “All of these improvements that we’re suggesting can help improve the training in the Navy.” For more information about the Department of Psychology, visit uwf.edu/psychology.

Looking to provide affordable health care coverage designed for affordability? There’s a solution available for small business owners in Florida. by UnitedHealthcare

With the current health care landscape bringing rising administrative and premium costs, as well as increased health care regulations, small business owners are dealing with the financial challenges of offering adequate, affordable coverage to their employees.

Alternate funding plans offer a way to control costs.

Also called level-funded plans, alternate funding plans can help small businesses reduce their overall health care costs and help employees get more out of their benefits. These plans include three components: 1. The employer’s self-funded medical plan. This pays medical expenses for covered employees and their dependents. 2. A third-party claims administration agreement. The employer enters into an agreement with the administrator, who provides claims processing, billing, customer service and other services. 3. A stop-loss insurance policy. This provides coverage for large, catastrophic claims by a single covered individual and provides overall coverage in the event all claims go beyond a certain dollar limit.

Alternate funding plans vs. traditional insurance. Traditional

Alternate Funding

Services, Inc., the employer sets up a medical plan that pays for employees’ medical benefits directly. Part of the risk is taken on by the medical plan, with the rest covered by stoploss insurance. The plan’s level-funding structure means the administration fees, stop-loss premium and monthly maximum claim liability are included in one monthly invoice throughout the plan year. At the end of the plan year, if the total health care claims are lower than expected, the employer may receive money back (where allowed by state law). And if they’re higher? The stoploss insurance policy covers them.

A great way to experience financial flexibility and freedom. The All Savers Alternate Funding plan is easy to understand and was specifically designed for small businesses. It may help the employer: • Pay lower premium taxes throughout the year. (Stop-loss coverage is still subject to premium tax.) • Be exempt from most health care reform regulations and state insurance mandates. • Get protection from unexpected high claims with stop-loss insurance. • Receive money back at the end of the plan year if claims are lower than expected. (Where allowed by state law.)

Meet the challenge of rising health care costs head-on.

Consider an alternate funding plan such as All Savers from United HealthCare Services, Inc. All Savers offers the choice of a variety of plan designs, innovative wellness programs, robust member tools and access to the vast UnitedHealthcare provider and OptumRx® pharmacy networks. It’s a great way for small businesses to provide coverage designed for affordability and help their employees get the most out of their benefits. Traditional: With traditional insurance plans, the employer pays a fixed premium to the insurance company. The insurance company assumes all of the risk, paying the health care claims, administrative costs, sales commissions and taxes. At the end of the plan year, if the actual health care claims are higher than expected, the insurance company covers them. But if they’re lower, the insurance company keeps the difference. UWF’S NEW PARTNERSHIP CONNECTS STUDENTS AND ALUMNI WITH EMPLOYERS FOR MICRO-INTERNSHIPS COVID-19 has derailed many college students. Many students were laid off and are scrambling to find ways to pay for classes. Students have had to alter their degree plans, which in some cases meant dropping their internship. Fortunately, the University of West Florida has a back up plan: micro-internships.

these experiences and not just rely on the traditional forms of experiential education.”

Micro-internships are short-term, paid, professional assignments that are similar to those given to new hires or interns. UWF is partnering with Parker Dewey, which is an organization that connects college students and recent graduates to micro-internships.

“Micro-internships provide a safe alternative during the pandemic since all microinternships are offered remotely,” Sarah Fox, associate director for high-impact practices/ experiential learning, said. “Students can still improve their career readiness skills in a safe environment that will make them strong candidates when they apply for future jobs while supplementing their income.”

“We’re really excited about this new partnership with Parker Dewey and the additional access to real-world experience it will provide to UWF students,” Lauren Loeffler, executive director for Career Development and Community Engagement, said. “Now more than ever, we must think creatively about

Unlike traditional internships, microinternships can take place year-round, typically range from 5 to 40 hours of work, and last between one week to one month from start date. These brief internships allow college students to explore career paths, network, demonstrate new skills while also getting paid. The majority of these internships, if not all, can be completed virtually. Since these internships are so short, students have the option of completing more than one micro-internship a semester.

Parker Dewey connects students to micro-internships in a variety of departments including sales, marketing, technology, HR and finance.

The process for applying for a microinternship is easy. First, students and recent graduates have to make an account with Parker Dewey at info.parkerdewey.com/ uwf. Once that step is complete, they can apply to numerous micro-internships. Employers who are interested in learning more about micro-internships and how to post assignments can contact the Office of Career Development and Community Engagement or visit the UWF Parker Dewey page at info.parkerdewey.com/uwf. This partnership with Parker Dewey complements UWF’s existing career development platform: Handshake. Handshake gives UWF students and alumni access to a plethora of nationwide and local employment opportunities, internships and part-time jobs. These opportunities help students sharpen their skills, build a network of professional contacts and gain new skills they can leverage as they seek future opportunities—especially in the current economic climate. To learn more about UWF’s career opportunities, students can visit uwf.edu/career.

AROUND THE REGION New Pedestrian Crosswalk in Perdido Key at Florabama Completed A new pedestrian crosswalk and signal on Perdido Key Drive at the Flora-Bama was completed last month by the Florida Department of Transportation in an effort to eliminate fatalities and improve pedestrian access to commercial destinations on both sides of the road. Upon completion of the signal, the Escambia County Traffic Operations Division took ownership of signal and crosswalk operations. “We are very thankful for the partnership we’ve had with the state of Florida, and the strong leadership that we’ve had from Commissioner Underhill to make sure we are creating a safe and equitable Perdido Key Drive,” Transportation Engineer Christine Fanchi said. The crosswalk is raised 3-inches above the grade of Perdido Key Drive to create a raised crossing and improve safety through reduced speeds. The signal is timed to allow for a minimum of 30 seconds of green time for vehicles between pedestrian crossings. Pedestrians who push button are advised by an audible signal to “wait.” Once cars are stopped on red,

128 Pensacola Magazine

the audible signal says “crosswalk is on,” then the countdown signal says “10, 9, 8, 7..” and so on. No crashes or injuries have been reported since the new signal was installed. “We are already seeing improved pedestrian and automobile flows, and as we iron out the details of the timing, these improvements will continue to improve. The Perdido Key Road Swap gave us control over our destiny on Perdido Key Drive, enabling the pedestrian improvements that we have long fought for,” District 2 Commissioner Doug Underhill said. “This project, in conjunction with the Multi-use Path and traffic circle at Johnson Beach Road, will build the infrastructure that Perdido Key has long asked for.” The timing of the pedestrian crossing is timed per national standards for the distance of the crossing. Understanding this is a new signal, new raised crossing, and this location has multiple events, we expect that it will take a few months for residents and visitors to adjust to this improvement. This project also supports the goal of the Perdido Key Master Plan to create a walkable and bikeable community.

Practical Home Upgrades to Improve Function and Ambiance Homeowners tackling interior upgrades often focus their attention on two of the mostused rooms the in the house: the kitchen and bathroom. Tailoring these rooms to your personal preferences may enhance your enjoyment of the space, but most experts recommend thinking long term for the biggest return on your investment.

Kitchen Considerations

As the hub of activity for many households, the kitchen is a space that commands efficient, functional design. Aside from the practical issue of losing access to the space while it’s under construction, there’s another important challenge for homeowners to consider when tackling a kitchen remodel: for maximum return on your investment, avoid making choices that are too trendy or personal. Design trends come and go, so while a contemporary update is almost always a good idea, many design experts recommend sticking with classic looks and styles that have broad appeal, especially for big ticket (and big price tag) elements like cabinetry. Save your flair for aspects like the backsplash tile or wall color, which can be relatively easily changed. Another area to give special attention is the overall ambiance of the room, which is largely influenced by the 136 ON THE MARKET

light from natural and electric sources. For a room that needs brightening, skylights are a smart option because they free up wall space for more storage and cabinets while adding abundant natural light. However, natural light from above isn’t the only advantage of adding skylights. Some models, such as a Velux solarpowered, fresh-air skylight, can be opened with a remote control to bring fresh air inside, which helps keep the kitchen fresh and rids indoor air of pollutants from daily activities like cooking and cleaning. Skylights can be ordered with light-filtering or roomdarkening blinds, which give homeowners maximum control over the exact amount of light they want. Plus, solar-powered blinds come in over 75 colors and patterns for customizable design options that allow you to truly make the space your own. Be sure to ask whether the line you’re considering qualifies for a federal tax credit. Solar-powered skylights and blinds are eligible for a 26% federal tax credit on product and installation if purchased and installed by the end of 2020. The credit decreases to 22% in 2021.

A Better Bathroom

In the bathroom, modern upgrades are also a smart investment. However, many experts recommend considering

needs far into the future. Universal design is especially relevant in the bathroom, where simple adjustments can provide added accessibility as you age, and these updates can flow seamlessly into the design. This means considering a vanity with a raised counter height and a taller toilet base, which can add stylish enjoyment no matter your age. Other features like a zero-entry shower deliver high-demand design and safety simultaneously. Outside of accessibilityoriented updates, upgrading your fixtures, fresh paint and contemporary tile can go a long way toward transforming a bathroom. If you find your space is still in need of a boost, a skylight may be the answer. Natural light can be that last touch to bring

your space from just OK to perfect, and skylights in the bathroom allow homeowners to maximize their natural light without losing any privacy. In a space like the bathroom, where ventilation is a top concern, a choice like Velux No Leak Solar-Powered “Fresh Air” Skylights provide natural light as well as fresh air ventilation to make the environment healthier. They help rid indoor air of bacteria, volatile organic compounds and carbon dioxide. Explore more design ideas to enhance your kitchen and bathroom spaces at www.whyskylights.com.

Battery-powered power tools make it convenient and efficient to tackle chores around the house and job site. While batteries eliminate the risks associated with electricity, they come with their own requirements for safe use and handling. You can take additional steps to ensure your batteries are up to the task and operating safely with advice from the experts at the Power Tool Institute. Only use batteries and chargers designed for use with the original tool manufacturer’s system. Each manufacturer uses unique control circuity that allows the system to communicate properly. This system monitors and controls critical functions, such as cell balance, energy levels, flow of energy and temperatures. Inspect your battery regularly for signs of damage, such as crushing, cuts or punctures. Do not use a battery that has received a sharp blow, been dropped or is in poor condition.

8 Tips for Safely Operating BatteryPowered Tools liquid ingress, such as water, can cause damage resulting in fire or explosion. Be mindful of abnormal battery behavior, such as a failure to fully charge or hold a charge, longer-than-usual charging times, a noticeable drop in performance, unusual LED activity when placed on a charger, liquid leakage from the battery or melted plastic anywhere on the pack. These are indications of an internal problem. Use and store your battery within the temperature limits stated by the manufacturer. Do not store in a closed location where sunlight may cause elevated temperatures, such as near a window or inside a vehicle. As a general practice, unplug battery chargers and remove battery packs when not in use. Do not store batteries on their chargers.

A battery pack will short circuit if a metal object makes a connection between the positive and negative contacts on the battery pack. Avoid storing or transporting batteries in a container with loose metal objects such as coins, keys or nails that may come in contact with the terminals.

If you suspect your battery may have a problem, do not use, ship or discard it as normal trash. Always dispose of your battery according to federal, state and local regulations. Contact the recycling agency in your area for recycling locations.

Do not immerse the battery or allow any fluids to flow inside. Conductive

In addition, a battery that is visibly overheating with signs of smoke, smoldering or melting requires immediate action.

138 ON THE MARKET

If the overheating battery is connected to a battery charger, always unplug the charger first. Pour water on the battery until it is cooled down and flames, if present, are extinguished. Then submerge it (along with the tool or charger if it is still attached to the battery) in a sturdy container filled with water. Keep the battery (and attached tool or charger) submerged, in an outdoor location at least 15 feet away from any combustible items, for at least 24 hours. If water is not available, dirt, sand or a conventional ABC extinguisher may be used to smother and cool the battery until water is available. When transferring the battery, avoid direct contact (use a long-handled shovel, for example). There is a risk that overheated batteries may vent, explode or emit a flame, so be sure to use appropriate personal protective equipment to protect your face, hands and body. white posts with slim, black balusters. Or, mix classic and contemporary looks by using a traditional, wide railing to frame the deck while installing a slimmer railing style on staircases.

View-optimizing options

COCKTAIL RAILING AND MORE: 5 trends for your deck W

hen determining the look of your outdoor living space, decking is only half of the equation. In many cases, it’s the deck railings that are most visible and the design element that makes the first impression. “Railings serve a necessary safety function, but they also play an important aesthetic role,” explains designer Alison Victoria, star of HGTV’s “Windy City Rehab” and “Rock the Block.” “They frame an outdoor space and define the setting’s style and personality.” Following are five fresh ways to frame up your outdoor space for maximum enjoyment and curb appeal:

Industrial inspiration Industrial styling is all the rage, as homeowners seek to replicate the clean lines and modern looks found in 140 ON THE MARKET

today’s hottest hotels, restaurants and craft breweries. In backyards across the country, this commercial-to-residential trend can be seen in the increased use of aluminum railing styles that deliver sleek sophistication. One such example is Trex Signature Railing, which offers a range of designs, including horizontal rods, mesh panels or glass inserts, in addition to traditional spindles - all with the low maintenance and durability of aluminum.

Mixed materials While railing matched to the decking remains perennially popular, an increasing number of homeowners are taking advantage of customizable design possibilities afforded by new railing materials, styles and finishes. Visual interest can be achieved by juxtaposing materials such as composite, aluminum, glass and brick. For an eye-catching color contrast, consider pairing chunky,

If you want to enjoy your view, thin balusters finished in black are a great choice as they tend to optically blend into the environment, putting more visual emphasis on the natural surroundings. Glass panels are also ideal, of course, as are cable and rod rail designs. Conversely, if you have nosy neighbors or a view you’d rather minimize, opt for railings with thicker posts and more tightly spaced balusters to enhance privacy.

Form and function In certain cases, deck railings can be as practical as they are pretty. One of the biggest trends is “cocktail railing” or a “drink rail.” This approach uses a deck board as a top rail to create a flat ledge at just the right height for holding drinks and plates. This level surface also offers an ideal resting spot for potted plants, candles and other decorative accessories. By using boards that match the decking, you can achieve a look that complements your deck, while making great use of space.

Inviting illumination Augment the beauty of your railing and lengthen the time you can spend enjoying your deck with discreet outdoor lighting that can be integrated into railing posts and caps. Not only will lighting set the mood, it also adds safety and security. Consider LED dimmable options to maximize energy efficiency, such as Trex Outdoor Lighting, which also are weatherproof and salt-air proof - ensuring they will last for years. WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT SELECTING MATERIALS FOR YOUR HOME EXTERIOR Whether you’re building a new home or making exterior updates, there are many decisions you’ll have to make. Perhaps topping the list in importance is what materials you select for your roofing and siding. Not only do your selections impact your home’s curb appeal, but some choices have the potential to save you money and help increase your family’s safety. Here are some things to consider, as well as some of the reasons why many building industry professionals and homeowners today are avoiding real wood products and steering toward composite shake alternatives instead: Long-Term Aesthetics: Real cedar shake roofing and siding is beautiful, particularly as it ages. Unfortunately, just as it begins to weather to a

rich-looking color, it often becomes unserviceable due to deterioration. To get the authentic weathered look of real cedar from day one, opt for composite materials. Those from DaVinci Roofscapes resist impact, fire, mold, algae, insects, salt air and high winds. Available in various colors and color blends, they will look as attractive as weathered cedar, but won’t curl, cup or split in the way wood does, so you get years of worry-free beauty.

Insects: Untreated wood shingles make for a yummy snack for termites and other bugs. Over time, these pests will destroy the integrity of a home’s exterior. By opting for composite shake, you get the look of authentic wood without this hassle. Made of virgin resins, UV and thermal stabilizers, composite shakes from DaVinci Roofscapes, for example, are strong products that silverfish, termites, carpenter ants and beetles will leave be. In addition, products made from these materials resist fading, rotting and cracking.

Fire: A Class A fire rating is the highest level of fire resistance a roofing system can achieve. While this is an important consideration for any homeowner, it should be a top priority for anyone living in wildfire-prone territories. Keep in mind that real cedar can burn easily, whereas fire-resistant composite shake siding and roofing offer peace-

Impact: It takes just one bad storm to cause extensive damage to real cedar shake roofing and siding. However, you can expect more from your home exterior by selecting stronger materials, like composite shake products with a Class 4 impact rating. This is particularly important if you live in a region that experiences hail or high winds.

Cost: When weighing the cost of siding or a new roof system, it’s helpful to look beyond the upfront price tag. Durable materials that help you avoid maintenance and replacement costs will save you money down the line. Additionally, many insurance companies recognize that certain composite materials stand up to the elements, and often offer associated discounts on policies as an incentive for homeowners to invest in them. Finally, think about your long-term goals and select products that offer a strong return-on-investment when it comes time to sell your home. To learn how composite shake roofing and siding can benefit your home, visit DaVinciRoofscapes.com. Is it time for a new roof or new siding? Be sure to select materials designed for long-term beauty and easy maintenance.

Remember that a New Loan Usually Restarts the Clock

6 Tips for Refinancing Your Mortgage (StatePoint) The recent economic downturn has caused many Americans to worry about their money, but there is at least one potential bright spot: lower interest rates. For homeowners, this means that it may be time to consider refinancing your mortgage. Refinancing can give you an opportunity to lower your monthly mortgage payments and save money by paying less interest over the term of the loan.

Here are six tips to consider if you are thinking about refinancing your mortgage.

Check Your Credit Score To determine if you qualify to refinance at a lower rate, lenders will look at any outstanding debt, such as credit cards, student loans or delinquent bank accounts. They will also check to see if you make your mortgage payments on time, which is a sign that you will reliably make future payments. 148 ON THE MARKET

Shop Around

Your current lender can work with you to refinance your mortgage to keep you as a customer, but they might not be able to compete with the lower interest rates offered at other lending institutions. Do some research to find a new loan with terms and an interest rate that works best for your financial situation.

Understanding both your current mortgage and the one you are pursuing is necessary to make smart, beneficial choices about refinancing and avoid “buyer’s remorse” down the road.

Lower Your Interest Rate Most experts agree that if you plan to stay in your home for many years, it is worth the initial upfront cost to reduce your interest rate. But do the math to make sure that the amount of money that you will save in interest over the expected repayment period will be more than the cost of refinancing.

You might reduce your monthly payments with a lower interest rate, but your savings may not add up if your new loan keeps you in debt longer (an extended loan term means more monthly payments). For this reason, consider shortening the term of your new loan by paying a little more each month. You could even continue making your old mortgage payments against the new loan, and thereby use your refinancing savings to pay down your principal. You might also consider a loan with a shorter term to begin with, but this may affect available interest rates. A Certified Financial Planner professional has the knowledge and experience to help you build a refinancing plan tailored to your financial needs and can help evaluate your different loan options. Be sure to lay the groundwork for the maximum benefits.
