Finding the “Lost Island” Visitors have been getting lost on Perdido Key for centuries, but none arrived here in a more unusual fashion than Don Carlos Siguenza. Tucked nicely between Florida and Alabama, Perdido Key escaped the early explosion of beach development and was largely left to appreciative locals, who enjoyed its remoteness— and the fishing, swimming and squeaky white sand. To give you an idea of the real estate market of yesteryear, historian Sunny David recounted a 1925 brochure that listed 10 acres of waterfront property for sale for $32,000 – home included! Part of what is now Lost Key Golf Course was a gunnery range for the U.S. Navy, and in the 1950s, Uncle Sam reportedly auctioned off the land for as little as $3,000 an acre. Siguenza, a Spanish explorer, found himself on Perdido Key quite by accident in 1693, when a storm blew his ship off course. Fortunately, a friendly Indian chief spotted the vessel and guided it to safe harbor. That’s how Siguenza, a cartographer and scientist, “found” Perdido Key, which is Spanish for “Lost Island.”

But as Florida became more and more developed, so did concern for public access to the pristine Perdido Key beaches, woods and marshes that had endured for centuries. Federal and state agencies bought much of the land, and now more than 60 percent of Perdido Key is off limits to development.

Today, much of the island is remarkably similar to the way it was back in 1693. Nature has helped shape and reshape the barrier island, which extends some 16 miles DID YOU KNOW? between the Gulf of Mexico Perdido Bay was at and the Intracoastal one time known as a Waterway. favorite pirate point.

For Perdido Key residents and visitors, getting “Lost on the Lost Key” is a way of life. You won’t find incessant traffic jams, long lines or crowded beaches here, just a stress-free, laid-back atmosphere where unwinding is a pastime.

Travel Insider

Our beautiful, white-sand beaches bring visitors back year after year. But take a closer look and you’ll find even more to enjoy: culinary delights, year-round festivals, parks and nature, golf, shopping, extreme watersports and countless ways to relax. So enjoy the beach, but don’t miss out on the other fun that Perdido Key has to offer:

Sunday Worship

Worship on the Water, an outreach of the Central Christian Church, draws casually dressed people of all ages for music and a short sermon Sunday mornings at the beachfront FloraBama. Arrive early on special days like Easter, when more than 2,400 people attend. Service at 11am.

Seafood and Bluegrass

Along with local fresh seafood, you can enjoy Bubba and Them, a lively bluegrass band, at The Original Point Restaurant (point-restaurant.com) every weekend. As one Yelp reviewer put it, “… this place is as fun as it gets. Amazing bluegrass band and fantastic royal red shrimp.”

The Past Comes Alive

At Native Paths Cultural Heritage Museum (perdidobaytribe.org), you’ll find Native American artifacts, historic weapons and hand-crafted treasures. Meet members of the Perdido Bay Tribe of Poarch Creek Indians, and watch as rescued and recovered animals are released into the wild. Tue-Sat, 9am-5pm. Free admission.

Unique Mess Hall

The Cubi Bar Café inside the National Naval Aviation Museum (navalaviationmuseum.org/explore/ cubi-bar-cafe) holds a treasury of memories for military personnel who transited through the Philippines from the Vietnam conflict until 1992, when the original Cubi closed. Gourmet sandwiches, salads and soups daily from 10:30am-3:30pm.

MORE ONE-OF-A-KIND ACTIVITIES NEARBY Flying High

Hummingbird Ziplines (gulfadventurecenter.com/ hummingbird-ziplines.html) has seven towers, six zip lines and nearly a mile’s worth of airborne travel at Gulf State Park between Orange Beach and Gulf Shores. Soar up to 90 feet above the ground while you enjoy views of the nature park and nearby Gulf.

Magical Gardens

Millions of flowers bloom year-round at Bellingrath Gardens and Home (bellingrath.org), a 65-acre estate in nearby Theodore, Ala. The house, built in 1935, covers 10,500 sq. ft., and the original furnishings are on display. Hop aboard the Southern Belle for a river cruise while you’re there.

Food, Culture and Blues

Historic Belmont-DeVilliers (belmontdevilliers.com) mixes art galleries, live music, restaurants and shops, where Five Sisters Blues Café serves authentic southern cuisine and regular live jazz music, the frills-free Blue Dot dishes out award-winning burgers and rib sandwiches, and Gumbo Gallery showcases local artists and “lost communities.”

A Fish Story

Joe Patti’s Seafood (joepattis.com) is a long-time fixture on Pensacola’s waterfront and one of the biggest tourist attractions in Pensacola. Wander through the bustling market that’s filled with oysters, fish, shrimp, crab and other fresh seafood right off the boat. There’s also a delicatessen, a sushi bar and a wine store.

A Lot of Hot Air

Hot air balloonists from around the country descend on Foley, Ala., every June for the Gulf Coast Hot Air Balloon Festival (southbaldwinchamber.com). Weather permitting, there are day and nighttime flights. There’s also a Frisbee dog show, live music, free children’s village, arts and crafts, and more.

Blue Angels

Flying High

The 2014 Blue Angels schedule includes 65 official air shows in the U.S., including two shows in the Perdido Key area, one over Pensacola Beach on July 12 and the second at Pensacola Naval Air Station on Nov. 7-8. Perdido Key is just a few miles from Pensacola NAS, where the Blues perform practice shows twice a week at 8:30am during flight season. And on Wednesday mornings after the practice, at 11:30am from March through November, visitors can meet the pilots, take photos with them and even ask for their autographs at the National Naval Aviation Museum. Also at the museum, visitors can visit the Blue Angels atrium to have their photos taken with real Blue Angels aircraft, positioned in flying formation.

FIVE

Blue Angel FUN FACTS

1. This year, the Blue Angels celebrate 60 years in Pensacola, where they have been based since 1954. 2. For many people, the favorite aircraft is Fat Albert, the C-130, which carries the Blue Angels’ cargo and plays a part in each show. Bulky but reliable Fat Albert got its name years ago from Marines, who make up its crew. 3. Don’t worry about streams of “smoke” trailing the aircraft. Biodegradable, paraffinbased oil is pumped into the aircraft’s exhaust nozzles, where it is instantly vaporized as “smoke.” 4. The F/A-18 can reach speeds just under Mach 2, almost twice the speed of sound or about 1,400 mph. 5. The Blue Angels do some of their best work on the ground, visiting an estimated 50,000 people in hospitals and schools each year on their tour across the United States.

On practice days you can watch the six F/A-18 jets slicing gracefully through the air at speeds up to 700 mph and see the breathtaking maneuvers—a vertical roll as high as 15,000 feet, a “sneak pass” performed at a ground-skimming 50 feet, and a Diamond 360 done with the aircraft a mere 18 inches apart! The Blue Angels team, named after a New York nightclub, was formed after World War II to remind people of Naval and Marine aviation, to encourage them to enlist and to boost the morale of current service members. An estimated 15 million people attend their shows each year!

DID YOU KNOW?

Much of the Lost Key Golf Course was once a gunnery range operated by U.S. Navy to train aerial gunners during WWII—many of whom had never shot a gun until the country went to war.

Built in 1859, the Pensacola Lighthouse may be the most haunted place on the Gulf Coast, according to the Travel Channel. When the Syfy Network’s “Ghost Hunters” visited, the film crew reported paranormal activity—a slamming hatch door, the sound of a chair being dragged across the floor, equipment inexplicably turning off and on, and unexplained whispers. Other people have reported seeing a small boy in Victorian clothing sitting cross-legged in a bedroom closet, according to Splash! magazine. But don’t just take our word for it, take a ghost hunter’s tour of the lighthouse, which is aboard Pensacola Naval Air Station, across from the National Naval Aviation Museum. The lighthouse, with 177 steps to the top, has a romantic side, too. Make a reservation for two and take in a panoramic view of Pensacola Bay from the top, along with ambient music, sparkling, non-alcoholic wine served in keepsake champagne flutes, and light hors d’oeuvres. (pensacolalighthouse.org) For another unforgettable nighttime experience, cast your fate to the winds and take a sail aboard the 53foot catamaran Wild Hearts, which starts its 90-minute cruises at sunset. Every sail is different aboard the U.S. Coast Guard-certified vessel, which casts off from Perdido Beach Resort’s Soundside Pier and goes wherever the wind goes. (sailwildhearts.com) Starry nights are breathtaking from the vantage point of the Gulf Coast, and the Escambia Amateur Astronomers’ Association regularly sets up telescopes at Big Lagoon State Park to view the night sky and explain its mysteries to the curious. Admission is free with park admission. 12301 Gulf Beach Hwy. (eaaa.net)

Observe otherworldly phenomena on the beach after dark, when waves sometimes light up with a neon glow as they roll onto the shore. The light comes from tiny animals living in the water, “ocean phosphorescence.” Kick your leg through the water and watch it glow with thousands of tiny sparkles of bluish-green light. When night falls on the beach, elusive ghost crabs often skitter along the sand in the dark. Named for their ability to blend in with the white sand dunes and to quickly vanish from sight, ghost crabs are speedy—their six legs can propel

them at speeds up to 10 mph, and they often see you before you see them, with eyes that are able to see 360 degrees at once. If you dare, venture to Happy Harbor on the Line, a popular restaurant on the canal side of the key. Along with waterfront dining, a tiki bar and a sports bar, there’s a surveillance video that seems to have captured a ghostly female resident who flies through the building and knocks over chairs after midnight. Flavors of the Key

Whether you’re craving smoked barbeque, spicy Cajun fare, handthrown pizza, sizzling steaks or fresh local seafood, there’s a culinary treat waiting for you on Perdido Key.

Waterfront views are standard at the new Flora-Bama Yacht Club, an open-air restaurant with a unique menu that includes Apple Cider Queso Blanca and Greek Shrimp Nachos. Across the street is the renowned FloraBama Lounge, Package and Oyster Bar, where you can taste oysters served an infinite number of ways: Cajun, McClellan, Perdido and raw—along with a full menu of seafood and burgers. With its boardwalk leading right down to the Gulf of Mexico, the popular Crab Trap is a perfect laid-back eatery for families—don’t miss their Blackened Mahi Mahi and mouth-watering hushpuppies and marmalade butter. And the popular Shrimp Basket serves up their own brand of fresh seafood dishes prepared any number of ways. Eat inside or under a relaxing, shaded, outdoor dining area. At Happy Harbor Restaurant, the second-floor view overlooks Old River’s endless parade of recreational and commercial boats. It’s a great waterfront, kid-friendly spot. Not to miss: their fried green tomatoes and Buffalo Shrimp Basket. The Oyster Bar Restaurant and Marina dishes up succulent steaks, fresh seafood, specialty cocktails and wonderful waterfront scenes, including spectacular sunsets. Follow the gravel road, or pull up the boat, to Sunset Grille at Holiday Harbor Marina, where you can enjoy a relaxing meal on the dock-side deck. The kids will love playing in the large, enclosed playground there! When you’re looking for something besides seafood, try a piping-hot homemade pizza or other Italian fare at Lillian’s Pizza (Lillian personally hand makes her pizza dough every morning) or Bella Luna Pizza (try the Ragin’ 14 PERDIDO KEY VISITORS GUIDE www.visitperdido.com

Cajun pizza). Hub Stacey’s at the Point is a favorite with locals, known for its waterfront views and hearty sandwiches. Try “The Innerarity” sandwich—it’s big enough for two—or the BBQ Cheddar Burger. Sports lovers, head to The Sports Bar of Perdido Key, where you can watch your favorite teams, shoot a game of pool and savor some of the best buffalo wings you’ve ever tasted. More great food and unusual settings are in store when you cross the Theo Baars Bridge heading east. Fisherman’s Corner, nestled under the bridge, will lure you back again and again for its Cajun Creole cuisine. Everything on the menu is made from scratch and made to order. Just next door is Perdido Key Seafood, a little seafood market that’s been providing fresh Gulf seafood to the area for more than 50 years. (When you get back home, order online and they’ll ship fresh shrimp right to your door). The Original Point Restaurant on Innerarity Point Road serves live bluegrass music along with fresh, local seafood. Their Point Gumbo and Fried Bay Scallops are unforgettable. The local dining options are seemingly endless—fine dining, casual waterfront views, live music, dining destinations that have been around for decades and new hotspots offering their own unique coastal flavors—and they’re all part of Perdido Key’s unique culinary experience.

Gulf Coast Fresh The island of Perdido Key is a food lover’s paradise, renowned for its delicious Gulf Coast cuisine. Hi guys! My family and I just got back from vacation at this fabulous place they call “Perdido.” The folks there obviously love dogs, because I was able to go just about everywhere with my family! I got to stay in this beautiful place they called a “condo”— yep, right there with the family. Let me tell you pups—my tail is still wagging about this trip! One of my favorite places was Big Lagoon State Park. I met a bunch of other dogs and there were lots of beautiful places to walk, called “trails”—the ultimate doggie adventure! Then we went to dinner—me and the family! We ate at the Sunset Grille and, let me tell you, dogs get

the VIP treatment there! I got lots of scratches on the head and the server even brought me a special treat! On day two, we went to Bill Dickson Dog Park, where I met more pups from all over. As if I wasn’t already having the time of my life, next we went out to eat at Hub Stacey’s at the Point, where we all ate outside on the deck and watched the boats going by. If you’ve not been there, I highly recommend it! On day three, I found a quiet, cool place to relax back at the condo while my family spent some time at the beach. I needed a rest after all the fun I’d had! Later, they took me on a picnic at Tarkiln Bayou State Park,

and then we went on a walk along Johnson Beach Road, where I had an awesome view of the beach! Well, all good things must come to an end, but my family is already talking about the next trip to Perdido Key and, of course I’ll get to go! There are so many other spots I need to visit, like The Rib Shak, River Road Park and Playa del Rio. I’m already dreaming about it all. Until next time, my friends…

PET FRIENDLY TRAVEL TIPS • ALWAYS keep your pet on a leash when outside. • Pets should have collars and ID/ medical tags, (ID tattoos and microchips are preferred). Owners should carry a recent photo of their pet and a caregiving permission form with contact information, in case of a lost pet or accident. • NEVER leave a pet in a closed vehicle, even on cool days. American Humane Society Pet Travel Tips 22 PERDIDO KEY VISITORS GUIDE www.visitperdido.com

• Be careful when introducing your pet to strangers—don’t allow children or adults to approach your pet without your permission and supervision. • NEVER let your pet approach an animal in the wild. • Pre-treat your pet with effective flea and tick medication. • ALWAYS clean up after your pet.

Discover Perdido Key More than 60 percent of Perdido Key is comprised of state and national parks, preserved forever for public use. The 16-mile-long barrier island’s wetlands, woods, beaches and waterways serve as protective environments for a number of endangered animals and plants, including the Perdido Key Beach Mouse, sea turtles and the carnivorous pitcher plant. Hidden along the Key are prime spots for camping, birding, hiking, biking, kayaking and, well, just relaxing. They’re all part of the federal and state parks, which protect nature and limit development of our coastal community. Gulf Islands National Seashore has access to both the Gulf of Mexico and Big Lagoon. Its popular boardwalk trail includes the familyfriendly Johnson Beach Discovery Nature Trail. This half-mile trail will take you and your children through the dunes and up to a beautiful view of the lagoon. On Rosamond Johnson Beach, the sand has been called some of the whitest and most beautiful in the nation. It’s also one of the best spots on the Key for collecting sea shells. Tarkiln Bayou State Park is home to more than 100 rare plants and animals, plus four species of carnivorous pitcher plants that

28 PERDIDO KEY VISITORS GUIDE www.visitperdido.com

populate the bayou. Tarkiln has three trails covering eight miles of the bayou. The longest, the Perdido Trail, ambles 6.5 miles round-trip along a dirt road. At the trailhead there are restrooms and picnic tables. Big Lagoon State Park’s threestory observation tower offers sweeping views of the coastline. Stop by the park ranger’s station on your way and borrow a pair of binoculars to get the best view. Big Lagoon’s two trails cover more than five miles of flatwoods, wetlands and other coastal habitats of flora and fauna. Amble along powder-sand trails of Perdido Key State Park, where protected sea oats protect the sand dunes from the rolling surf. Look closely and you might spot a lightning-fast ghost crab before it darts into its home in the sand.

DID YOU KNOW? Big Lagoon State Recreation Area opened to the public in 1978.

Ship Wrecked Divers will find picturesque reefs and submerged objects to explore. The most popular underwater destinations include five ships wrecked near Perdido Key, ranging from the world’s largest artificial reef—a former Navy aircraft carrier, the USS Oriskany—to a barge and a fruit freighter. The sunken vessels are part of the Panhandle Shipwreck Trail (floridapanhandledivetrail.com), which includes 12 shipwrecks scattered across North Florida from Pensacola to Port St. Joe. The historic shipwrecks, which are protected by law, attract a range of marine life and pose varying degrees of difficulty for divers.

FIVE OF THE SITES ARE LOCATED IN THE PERDIDO KEY/PENSACOLA BAY AREA: • The world’s largest artificial reef, the famous carrier USS Oriskany, sunk in 2006 after serving in the Pacific Ocean. • YDT-14, a veteran U.S. Navy dive tender sunk in 2000 at a depth of 90-100 feet. •

San Pablo, an international fruit freighter destroyed during World War II by a top-secret U.S. military operation that was testing an experimental weapon system.

• The oilfield supply vessel Pete Tide II, which became an artificial reef in 1993 and offers three decks of superstructure to explore. • Three coal barges, located in shallow water, sunk in 1974. PERDIDO KEY VISITORS GUIDE

YOU CAN HELP SAFEGUARD BABY SEA TURTLES ON PERDIDO KEY! • Always watch the Gulf and bays for sea turtles when you’re boating. • Never throw plastics or trash in water or leave it on the beach. • Use turtle-friendly lights at homes and businesses. (Details: 850-934-2600). • If you find an injured sea turtle or a disrupted nest, call Escambia County Marine Resources at (850) 595-3474.

Want to help? Become a sea turtle

protection volunteer on Perdido Key’s state or national parks. Johnson Beach/Gulf Islands National Seashore—Call the National Parks Service at (850) 934-2619 or visit nps.gov/guis/ naturescience/sea-turtles.htm. Big Lagoon State Park/Perdido Key State Park— Training is provided, call (850) 492-1595 or visit floridastateparks.org/biglagoon.

Perdido Key is home to four endangered species of sea turtles, all protected by Federal law. Female Loggerhead, Leatherback, Ridley and Green sea turtles dig nest cavities in the sand here, into which they lay 100 or more eggs. About two months later—provided the nest isn’t washed away, uncovered by high winds, or disturbed by predators or beach visitors— baby turtles emerge. And under a bright moon, starlit sky, and the help of sea turtle volunteers and national park service rangers, the fragile babies make their way to the sea. One of the world’s most ancient creatures, sea turtles once filled the world’s oceans. But development, pollution, fishermen and predators took a heavy toll on the sea turtle population. For many years, they were prized for their meat and eggs, until trapping them for food became outlawed. Now, they’re making a comeback. More than three dozen turtle nests were found last year in Gulf Islands National Seashore property on Perdido Key and Santa Rosa Island. They were carefully monitored and protected by park rangers and volunteers who babysat the nests and helped the baby turtles find their way to the Gulf of Mexico as soon as they hatched. Without aid, baby sea turtles may be distracted by the harsh lights of homes and businesses, which causes them to head away from the Gulf rather than toward it. A wrong turn can be fatal, opening them up to predators, traffic and dehydration. Unfortunately, despite ongoing valiant efforts, only 1 in 1,000 baby sea turtles will live until maturity.

FUN TURTLE FACTS

(from the Sea Turtle Conservancy) • Female sea turtles return to the same nesting grounds where they were born to lay their eggs. • A nest of sea turtle eggs is called a clutch. • The temperature of the nest determines whether a hatchling is male or female. • The largest sea turtle, the Leatherback, can weigh more than 2,000 pounds! • Sea turtles are air-breathing reptiles, and need to surface to breathe.

Island Survival Guide No matter when or how you’re traveling to the Key, your trip can be easier if you keep these beach travel tips in mind. Book Ahead – Try to

avoid last minute planning by sorting out the details and booking your stay early. This will help you avoid rushing and ensure the accommodations you want are available, along with activities such as charter boats, tee times and dolphin cruises.

Take Advantage of Incentives – Always be

on the lookout for the Key’s famous travel incentives like free gift cards and gas cards. Hundreds of thousands of travel dollars have already been given away. Register at VisitPerdido.com for advance notice of discounts and incentives.

Fuel Up – There’s nothing

worse than navigating an airport or trying to keep kids quiet during a car ride when stomachs are empty. Pack healthy snacks (nuts, fruit, granola bars) to keep your energy up, and plenty of water to keep from getting dehydrated. Bring enough to take to the beach with you while you’re here.

What to Wear – While

you might be itching to wear those new sandals, you’ll probably wish you were wearing running shoes or flip flops once you get here. The

same goes for other clothing. Lightweight linen and cotton are always appropriate on the Key!

Sunburn – Prevent at all costs! Spend a few minutes in the sun a day, increasing the time daily, or start out with sunscreen with the highest protection and work your way down. UV rays are the strongest between the hours of 10am and 2pm. Sweat and water tend to wash off most sunscreens, so remember to reapply. And don’t forget, you can still get sunburned even when it’s cloudy outside. Dehydration – This can be a serious problem when it gets really hot outside. Drink plenty of liquids— water, juice, Gatorade-type drinks are best. Beer and Bushwackers don’t count. Undertow and Washouts – Be aware of

tides, currents and washouts. If you are caught in a rip current, don’t panic. Swim with the current diagonally or parallel to the beach until you can swim toward the shore without struggling.

Flotation – Always wear

Whether it is the thrill of parasailing or a memorable moment watching dolphins play in the water just an arm’s length away, you will find exactly what you are looking for on-shore and off in beautiful Perdido Key.

Six-seat inflatable banana boats are pulled through the water by an expertly driven jet ski. Ideal for adventuresome groups, this is one wild ride, so life jackets are mandatory.

Fishing on the Key

Stand-up paddleboarding has become one of Florida’s most popular sports. Paddle a long, sleek surfboard, and you’ll get a major workout as you explore our scenic waterways. For a less-strenuous ride, canoeing and kayaking are excellent options.

Whether you prefer saltwater or freshwater fishing, there are plenty of choices on Perdido Key. The beaches along the barrier island provide the perfect launch site for casting a line. Or, you can set out in search of a more challenging catch–cobia, mullet, mackerel or redfish, to name a few—from a charter boat, where everything you’ll need is provided, even the fishing license.

For a little more speed, try kiteboarding— the art of navigating a surfboard with an attached kite or sail. Experts can leap 12-foot waves at speeds of up to 35 miles per hour! Enjoy the unforgettable thrill of watching dolphins play as you cruise our emeraldgreen waters. A dolphin cruise along Perdido Key creates memorable moments for couples 40 PERDIDO KEY VISITORS GUIDE www.visitperdido.com

Check the events calendar at visitperdido.com for area fishing tournaments, or enjoy a quiet day fishing from a kayak or canoe, which will give you access to areas that a larger boat can’t reach. Sports Lovers’ Paradise

Spectator or participant, you’ll find plenty of sports action in the Perdido Key area.

Golf, tennis, sailing, fishing, skateboarding, paddleboarding, kayaking and canoeing, horseback riding, hiking, surfing, zip lining and more are in Perdido Key and nearby. Lost Key Golf Course (625 Lost Key Dr.) is a par-71 championship course and the first in Florida to be certified as an Audubon International Silver Signature Sanctuary. Follow the footsteps of legends like Payne Stewart, Jack Nicklaus and Curtis Strange, who played at Perdido Bay Golf Club (1 Doug Ford Dr). The premier championship course was the site of the Pensacola Open, a longtime stop on the PGA Tour. There are two free public tennis courts on Avon Road, with a large park and children’s playground right next door. Skateboarders will enjoy the skateboard park on Innerarity Point Road. There’s no shortage of fishing (onshore or offshore), annual tournaments and charter boat captains ready to take you out for the day. Then again, you can stay on dry land and fish from the beach, a fishing pier or Big Lagoon State Park. If you like kayaking and canoeing, explore the scenic Perdido Key Blueway paddling trail, a link on Florida’s 1,515-

mile Blueway Trail. The Perdido Key segment extends 5½ miles along the south shore of Big Lagoon. (Launch site: Johnson Beach) The Southwest Escambia Sports Complex draws thousands of young players for tournaments each year. It covers nearly 200 acres, with lighted baseball, softball, soccer and football fields, an open play area, playground and covered pavilions (2020 Bauer Rd). The Pensacola Blue Wahoos play Double-A baseball at the waterfront Community Maritime Park (301 W. Main St.) in Pensacola. And fans love the Pensacola Ice Flyers, a Southern Professional Hockey League team that plays at Pensacola Bay Center (201 E. Gregory St). When the pros aren’t playing, the ice rink is open to the public. On Pensacola’s west side is Five Flags Speedway (7451 Pine Forest Rd.) and the Escambia Equestrian Center (7750 Mobile Hwy). Veteran stars and newcomers alike battle at Five Flags, which brings the stock car season to an exciting end with the Snowball Derby. The Equestrian Center offers horse shows, dog shows and rodeos year-round. Close by, the Pensacola Greyhound Park has one of Florida’s few remaining greyhound tracks, as well as a poker room. Legendary Flora-Bama CELEBRATES 50 YEARS

The Flora-Bama first gained national attention when former Oakland Raiders quarterback and NFL MVP Kenny Stabler referred to it as “The best watering hole in the country.” Wikipedia describes it as “a beachside oyster bar, beach bar, and Gulf Coast cultural landmark.” It’s been mentioned in New York Times and Wall St. Journal and CNN. Like a lot of other Gulf Coast landmarks, it’s taken a few beatings from hurricanes and storms. But the Flora-Bama Lounge, expanded and revamped over the years on the Gulf Coast where Florida meets Alabama, has never lost its charm. One of the nation’s most off-beat events is held there each April. The Interstate Mullet Toss, started 30 years ago, now draws an estimated 35,000 attendees during its annual three-day run. They all come for the opportunity to participate in the heated competition of flinging a fish across the state line. It’s one of many special events nurtured by the Flora-Bama Lounge. The events run the gamut, from the Polar Bear Dip in the frigid Gulf of Mexico each New Year’s Day to the Frank Brown International Songwriters’ Festival each November, which draws thousands of people from all over the world for 11 days of music and story-telling by musicians and writers of some of the top-selling songs past and present. It’s regularly listed as a Top 20 Event by the Southeast Tourism Society. But the Flora-Bama is more than a rambling beach bar/entertainment complex. It’s a big part of the local community, contributing to numerous charities and hosting church

services every Sunday, too. The Flora-Bama was originally constructed in 1964 by the Tampary family, and in the early days it was practically the only building in the area. But as Perdido Key grew, the lounge grew along with it, with new construction added as needed to accommodate the ever-growing crowds. In 1978, the Flora-Bama was sold to Joe Gilchrist and Pat McClellan, who are two of the four co-owners of the bar today. DID YOU KNOW? The Flora-Bama was set to open on Independence Day, July 4, 1964. However, on the night of July 3, it burned to the ground.

Its eclectic make-up of bar patrons is one of the contributing factors to the FloraBama’s appeal, and on holiday weekends you’ll find them by the carload, lined up along the highway in both directions. With multiple bars and up to four live bands playing simultaneously for the crowds, the Flora-Bama keeps getting better with age as it adds new events and fine-tunes its original events, all while welcoming customers 365 days a year.

Frank Brown International Songwriters’ Festival Celebrating 30 years in 2014, The Frank Brown International Songwriters’ Festival each November draws thousands of people from all over the world for 11 days of music and story-telling by musicians and writers of some of the top-selling songs, past and present.

FESTIVAL NAMED AFTER FORMER NIGHT WATCHMAN Frank Brown (1895-1988) spent 28 years as a night watchman at the Flora-Bama, where his job was to keep the peace and watch the club. “Mr. Frank” wore a pair of matched revolvers, slung low, back in an era when the nearest deputy could be 20 or 30 miles away. But he didn’t like to use guns. Instead, Brown’s words were his weapons, helping him assert control when patrons drank too much and began fighting. “Now, you boys don’t have to be like that,” Mr. Frank would say. “What would yo’ mamma say?” Usually that was enough to quell the commotion. The Flora-Bama regulars knew and respected “Mr. Frank,” and they didn’t want to disappoint someone so kind and unpretentious. They put down their fists, swallowed their tongues and got back to having fun. Mr. Frank was 91 years old when he retired, but he kept coming to the bar because he loved music and people. He was featured on Paul Harvey’s syndicated radio show, “The Rest of the Story.” PERDIDO KEY VISITORS GUIDE
