HOW TO HELP: WAYS TO GIVE BACK TO THE COMMUNITY YOU LOVE
by Scott Emerline
V
olunteering in the community is an amazing way to close out the year. This holiday season, consider showing our local community that you care by supporting local charities and non-profit organizations. Giving back to your community can be as simple as filling out a quick form, a short phone call to see what a local soup kitchen may need donated or making monetary donations to local charities. No matter what you choose, Pensacola has plenty of ways to help out, and if none of these projects interest you or meet your schedule, there are more available on volunteermatch.org.
Project Connect
Project Connect serves our community by helping at-risk children stay on the right track and increase employability in the future. This organization is currently looking for mentors to be role models for kids who are attempting to transition from a residential program for delinquent children to their home communities. Project Connect offers both individual and group mentoring for its participants and promotes life skills and the development of professional skills. For more information, visit projectconnectfl.org.
Park Cleanup
Tired of seeing litter in our local parks? Around Pensacola, various cleanups are held to improve our parks and keep the local environment beautiful. Park cleanups ensure that the community stays pristine and that everyone gets to enjoy the local area. Between the 2018 and 2019 cleanups, Ocean Hour collected over 17,000 pounds of trash out of local parks. Every month, cleanups take place at Bay Bluffs Preserve and Chimney Park on the second Saturday and at Wayside and Bartram Parks on the third Saturday. For more information, visit oceanhourfl. com or check out Ocean Hour on Facebook.
Palafox Market Volunteer
If you’re a fan of the Saturday Palafox Market, maybe the best volunteer job for you could be helping the Downtown Improvement Board keep the market going by volunteering to set up the market, help it run and clean up after it’s over. While the market is open, volunteers are assigned only two hour blocks, which allows this job to work around your schedule. After you’re done volunteering, you can enjoy what the market has to offer. If you are interested in volunteering, contact dib@downtownpensacola.com.
Animal Allies Florida If you’re an animal lover and would like to help a cat find a home, Animal Allies Florida is an animal shelter whose goal is to reduce the number of animals that must be put down in Escambia and Santa Rosa counties. The organization is looking for volunteers that would be happy to care for and spend a few hours with the foster cats. Animal Allies could also
use volunteers to help them organize and execute fundraising and adoption events. If you would be interested in coming to their foster homes one day a week and socializing with the cats for just two hours or helping them set up events, visit ecaafl.org.
To help Loaves & Fishes, volunteers simply need to fill out an online form on its website, or because the holidays are a busy time for everyone, donations are always an option. More information is available at loavesandfishessoupkitchen.com.
Big Brothers Big Sisters
Holiday Maker’s Market
Big Brothers Big Sisters is in need of caring adults who would be happy to mentor young children currently facing struggles and adversities in their personal lives. Mentors are asked to spend a few hours with a child that lives in their community twice a month and be an active positive role model in a child’s life. Currently, the local Big Brother Big Sisters agency has over one hundred and fifty children on its waiting list. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwest Florida marks its 30th anniversary this year. The fundraising from their 30th year anniversary will benefit their new campaign, Bold Steps, which expands its program to better serve the local community’s underprivileged youth. If you would like to become a mentor or donate to its Bold Steps campaign, visit bbbsnwfl. org or call 850-433-5437
Loaves & Fishes
Organized in 1983, Loaves & Fishes Soup Kitchen has been around for more than 30 years and helps feed around 4,600 people each month. The kitchen is largely supported by donations to the organization by our local community. Loaves & Fishes also offers emergency shelter for up to 10 families at a time and offers a transitional housing program, which helps provide shelter for homeless families for a period of two years.
WE’RE SOCIAL
On December’s gallery night, the Rising Tides Society will be sponsoring a Holiday Maker’s Market at 1 Palafox Place where proceeds will benefit The Secret Place, a charitable foundation that seeks to help the survivors of human trafficking by providing young women the chance to recover from trauma in a safe environment. The event will feature a silent auction as well as local makers who will be selling last minute Christmas gifts. This Maker’s Market gives you a chance to wrap up your holiday shopping while benefitting a good cause.
Council of Aging: Heaters for Seniors
The sudden, unexpected temperature drop in Northwest Florida has highlighted the challenge many senior adults are faced with in the colder months. Without dependable sources of adequate heating, vulnerable elders are subject to extreme discomfort and health complications. Each year, Council on Aging of West Florida provides brand-new space heaters to these individuals to keep them warm during the colder Florida months of November, December, January and February. If you are interested in donating visit www.coawfla.org.

On January 1 there are significant changes happening in county court. The judicial branch and clerks of court are working to ensure courts users in Florida are aware of what is going on. • On the first day of 2020: • Dollar limits for civil cases in county court double to $30,000 • Small claims cases are increasing to include amounts up to $8,000, an in crease of 60 percent • Civil filers must include a cover sheet that specifies the amount of money in dispute in cases valued at more than $8,000 • Filing fees remain as they have been and do not change Staff in the OSCA, in the judicial circuits, and with clerks of court are making operational and informational changes in preparation. Florida’s State Courts System and the Florida Court Clerks & Comptrollers worked together to develop a communications plan to inform the public of the changes. Public information officers in 20 judicial circuits and with 67 clerks of court along with communications staff at The Florida Bar are using coordinated messages, graphics, and video on their websites, in their offices, and on social media to make sure the public is aware what is coming. Increases in county courts’ jurisdictional limits were passed by the legislature and signed by the governor. Increases to small claims amounts and the civil cover sheet changes were adopted in rules approved by the Supreme Court. A series of videos featuring clerks of court, a county judge, and The Florida Bar President John Stewart explain different aspects of the changes and are also highlighted on websites and social media. The change should be seamless and invisible to most courts users. Lawyers and self-represented litigants who file electronically will be automatically prompted to include an amount in dispute when filing civil cases. The Florida Courts E-Filing Portal will automatically produce a civil cover sheet in compliance with new rules. Look for these messages on the websites and in the social media feeds of the OSCA and our circuits, along with clerks of court around the state. More details can be found at KnowYourCourt.org.
THE FLORIDA BAR FOUNDATION KICKS OFF 2020 FLORIDA PRO BONO LAW SCHOOL CHALLENGE
MAITLAND, Fla. – The 2020 Florida Pro Bono Law School Challenge will kick off on Feb. 3, 2020. The statewide competition, now in its second year, connects Florida law students with lawyers to partner on pro bono cases from local legal aid organizations. Students and lawyers can visit www.FloridaLawSchoolChallenge.org through April 3, 2020, to pick a case. All 12 of Florida’s law schools will compete to see which can take the most cases. Law students were thrilled to be given an opportunity to learn from lawyers and gain practical experience with clients through the first challenge,” Claud Nelson, the Foundation’s pro bono program director, said. “And, we heard from many lawyers that they had meaningful experiences mentoring a student and giving back to their community.” A core part of the Foundation’s mission is to promote public service among lawyers by making it an integral part of the law school experi-
ence. The Foundation launched the pilot version of the competition in January 2019. More than 300 students and lawyers were matched on cases. Florida Coastal School of Law won the top honor for matching the most students with its own alumni. Florida A&M University College of Law and The Barry University Dwayne O. Andreas School of Law were runners up. “After such a phenomenal response to our pilot, the Foundation knew we needed to continue this successful program,” Florida Bar Foundation President Hala A. Sandridge said. “It’s another unique Foundation project that has gained national attention for creative and efficient strategies that increase access to justice.” Nelson and Eli Mattern, CEO of SavvySuit, the legal tech firm that built the challenge’s online platform, will present on the challenge at Legal Services Corporation’s 2020 Innovations in Technology conference in January.

Gulf Breeze Zoo Celebrates White Christmas with the Birth of an Endangered Species
Gulf Breeze, FL – Dreaming of a white Christmas? Look no further than the Gulf Breeze Zoo, known for their White rhinos. This year the Zoo received an early gift, the birth of a healthy baby White-handed Gibbon, the first in a decade to be born at the Zoo. In July, the Zoo finished construction and opened a brand-new habitat for the endangered species of primate. The ape family is native to the tropical rainforests of Southeast Asia. The new baby boy can be seen daily with his moth-
er Buttercup and father Tango. Guests can watch the baby use his long arms and strong grip to hang on tight to mom while she swings through the air. White Christmas celebrations are not limited to the animals. Guests can stay all day and enjoy the first annual Christmas Zoobilee. The event features live music, entertainment, a winterthemed bounce gingerbread bounce house, and a Candy Cane Market for all your last-minute gifts. Even Santa likes hanging
out at the Zoo, where you can find him in his sleigh this Sunday. The Gulf Coast Area’s awardwinning Gulf Breeze Zoo is home to more than 900 exotic animals. The Zoo supports wildlife conservation in 25+ countries globally through financial aid, public education, captive breeding, and habitat preservation. The Zoo opens at 9 a.m. daily and is located just off Highway 98. Visit www.GBZoo.com for event updates, seasonal hours, and more.

The children who wrote these letters will be recognized and whoever has the absolute best will win a “Santa Scholarship” of $500.00, on top of being given Santa’s very own sleigh bell! This festive ceremony will be from 7:30pm to 8:30pm at 223 S. Palafox Place.

Reeves as Date Mike.

S2 Group Makes A Surprise Donation to Cover ECSD School Lunch Debt
A recent article in the Pensacola News Journal looked at the school lunch dept story from a local perspective. Reporter Annie Blanks had contacted Jaleena Davis, Escambia County School District’s School Food Services department director a couple of weeks ago when this story topic started popping up in national media. When the story ran in yesterday’s newspaper, it inspired something wonderful. “When Stephen Simpson at S2 Groups saw the article in the Pensacola News Journal about school lunch debt, he asked his staff to reached out to our Food Service Department to get the latest total. The staff in the Food Services Accounting office got the call, they asked, which school’s debt they were interested in covering. They were shocked to hear the response, No, we want the total for the whole district! They then came right over and surprised us all with their generous donation of a check for $2,564.47, said Escambia County’s School Superintendent Malcolm Thomas. “This will help families from 19 schools by giving them one less financial concern. This also helps our schools avoid having to cover this debt later in the year.” “We greatly appreciate it when members of our community see an opportunity to make a difference by reaching out to our schools to help,” said Superintendent Thomas. “During the holidays this generosity takes many forms from donated gifts for chil-
dren, snacks for class holiday celebrations and, best of all, allowing their personnel to spend time in our schools to help with so many special events.” “This donation stood out because it is also a gift to so many families – the gift of a little less worry. This is a gift of peace, the peace of mind families get when a financial obligation has been lifted,” Superintendent Thomas added. Jaleena Davis said” I was beyond excited to hear of the generous donation made this morning to assist families that had accrued a negative balance. As we strive to ensure all students receive nutritious meals throughout the school day, I would like to remind families that if your financial situation changes at any time throughout the year, you can and should apply for meal benefits.” If someone wants to say thank you to their benefactors at The S2 Group, that can send a thank you card to the mailing address for S2 Groups, 201 S. Baylen St. Pensacola, FL 32502. Attn: Stephen Simpson The application for meal benefits can be found on the school district’s website, on the Families page, http://ecsd-fl.schoolloop.com/families. The link to the Free and Reduced Meal Application will take you to a form on this page: https://www.myschoolapps. com/Home/PickDistrict

PROPOSAL TARGETS PENSACOLA SHOOTER ‘LOOPHOLE’ Jim Turner News Service of Florida TALLAHASSEE --- Three U.S. House members from Florida want to close a “loophole” used by a Saudi national to buy a handgun before he killed three people and injured eight others this month at a Pensacola naval base. A bill spearheaded in the House by Democrats Charlie Crist of St. Petersburg and Val Demings of Orlando and Republican John Rutherford of Jacksonville would address foreign nationals who meet current requirements to buy handguns in the United States. It would require them to petition the U.S. attorney general before being able to buy guns and would lead to more-rigorous background checks. Federal law generally prevents people in the United States on non-immigrant visas from having guns. But an exception allows them to have guns if they have valid hunting licenses.
They also can have guns if they are certain official representatives of foreign governments or if they are lawenforcement officers from friendly governments in the U.S. on official business, according to the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. In the Pensacola shooting, Mohammed Alshamrani, a second lieutenant in the Royal Saudi Air Force who was studying at Pensacola’s Naval Aviation Schools Command, was able to get a state hunting license in July that he used a short time later to legally purchase a 9 mm Glock 45 pistol. After opening fire at Naval Air Station Pensacola, Alshamrani was killed by an Escambia County Sheriff’s deputy. “Foreign nationals should not be able to buy a firearm through the purchase of a hunting license,” Crist said in a prepared statement Thursday. “We need tougher vetting than that.”

Rutherford, a former Jacksonville sheriff, said it is “clear that Congress must act to close a loophole in federal gun laws that allowed a foreign visitor to legally purchase a firearm and kill three Americans.” “I believe that all foreigners seeking to purchase a firearm must be vetted both here in the U.S. and in their country of origin,” Rutherford said. “This bipartisan bill is crucial to strengthening our national security and keeping communities safe.” While Rutherford voiced his support for Second Amendment rights, Demings, a former Orlando police chief, blamed the “gun lobby” for the loophole. “It’s simply common sense that people shouldn’t be able to get a gun anywhere, anytime,” Demings said in a statement. “Nearly every American agrees with this basic principle, yet the gun lobby has left federal gun laws
riddled with loopholes.” The proposal was introduced a week after officials with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission acknowledged the state doesn’t have an easy fix to address the issue of foreigners using state hunting licenses to buy handguns. Florida Senate President Bill Galvano, R-Bradenton, said last week the hunting-license issue will become part of a broader, ongoing review of incidents of mass violence by the state Senate Infrastructure and Security Committee. U.S. Sen. Rick Scott, R-Fla., has asked the U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee to bring in the FBI, the Department of State, the Department of Defense and U.S. intelligence officials to examine how foreign nationals are vetted on U.S. military bases.
